OFFICE HOURS Monday-Thursday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Closed for lunch 12:00-1:00 pm; Friday 8:00 am-12:00 pm THE CALL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD The Twenty-third Psalm, today's responsorial psalm, is arguably the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads "Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side / with your rod and your staff / that give me courage" (Psalm 23:4) connects this week's scriptures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our baptism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: "I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on May 13/14.

Fourth Sunday of Easter - May 7, 2017 As I mentioned last weekend, I was on a KAIROS retreat in California (Benedictine Monastery at Valyermo) with 70 Gorman students when the bids from our five General Contractors were scheduled to be opened; so we arranged for a conference call in order that I could be part of the opening of those bids. The bids were secret or private meaning that the General Contractors were not present. The first bid opened was lower than we had estimated and all were surprised, thinking that perhaps this bid would be the only one so low, but the other four bids were basically in the same range with not a huge difference between the lowest and highest bids. Of course, that was good news for us! It also means that the bids were accurate since all were in the same general range. During this past week, our architectural firm, JVC, has been comparing all five bids and is scheduled to make its recommendation on Monday, May 8. We are not bound by their recommendation, but I m sure that we will follow it especially if one firm is easily the best suited to build our church. Once a single General Contractor is decided upon, the Diocese will inform that company and begin to work on the actual legal contract. I m sure at that point, I will be able to announce the decision to you, the parishioners. My first question will be: When do you start? I have been getting notices from several Catholic newspapers around the country about our Stations of the Cross; remember that a story about our Stations was put on Catholic News Services (CNS) and could be picked up by Catholic media and published. I have also put some more materials on our website (www.holyspiritlv.org) about the Stations: some graphic design promotional materials (in Spanish) about the exhibition in Huaraz, Peru; an excerpt from Mirko Codenotti, the Italian artist/teacher about the impact of the exhibition on government officials and citizens of Huaraz; and a You Tube presentation (in Spanish). We should be very proud and excited about these Stations; I can t wait until you see them. I want to thank Veda Candeloro who is stepping down from her volunteer position of Coordinator of Eucharistic Ministers; she has done a magnificent job for many years! She just needs a break and will continue to be an active Holy Spirit parishioner. Mike Rinaldi is taking over that position and I know that he will do a great job as well. Thanks, Veda, so much! Congrats to those who have received or will receive the Sacraments of First Eucharist and Confirmation during this Easter Season literally hundreds of grade school, middle school, high school students and adults. Have a great week. NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOLY SPIRIT MISSION TEAM Mission Trip to Kingston, Jamaica JULY 29 AUGUST 5 OUR 2017 HOLY SPIRIT MISSIONARIES HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. Fourth Sunday of Easter - May 7, 7, 2017 Are you searching for a way to thank God for all He has given you? We offer: Can you spare a couple hours a month? Then the K of C is what you need. Brotherhood and friendship Flexible volunteer opportunities If you are interested in serving in the Reader ministry with Holy Spirit, please complete the form (available in the back of the church or online) and plan to attend the upcoming training on May 7 after the 12:30 Mass. THIS IS THE LAST TRAINING BEFORE SUMMER BREAK. Training will continue in September. April 29th through Mother s Day, May 14th Recently, several members of our Outreach Ministry toured Catholic Charities campus to find out more about their many programs and how we might partner with them. As we were touring their amazing food pantry, we noticed a room that was practically empty with a sign above reading Baby Room. We inquired as to their needs and how we might assist them. They asked if we could hold a drive to collect items that the families need for their little ones. They said that during the months of May and June, they are dangerously low of important items. The Outreach team met and unanimously voted to help in any way that we as a parish could make a difference for these little ones. Here is where you come in! If you wish to participate, please consider picking up one or more of the following items and bring them to church on April 29th through Mother s Day, May 14th: Baby Formula: Similac Advanced and Similac Sensitive Disposable Diapers (Mostly need sizes 4 & 6) Baby Wipes Baby Hygiene items New outfits for boys and girls (all sizes) Baby blankets, receiving blankets, hats, booties, etc. If you are unable to shop and would like us to shop for you, please place your donation in an envelope labeled Baby Shower and put it in the Sunday collection basket and we will see to it that these babies are well taken care of. For this particular drive, we ask that all items donated are NEW. God bless you for taking care of these families and babies. Page 8
