Congregation B Nai Torah Torah Times What a fabulous month for the Congregation Bnai Torah Family! Fresh from our extraordinary High Holidays, we have two terrific weekends planned. First, the weekend of October 19th through 21st will feature three special occasions. Friday October 19th Services (7:30PM) will be a Sisterhood Shabbat honoring Ray and Gloria Max as People of Valor. Their record of service to the Jewish community is unparalleled and we look forward to having the opportunity to honor them. That very same weekend on Shabbat, after our 10AM Services, our Lunch and Learn will feature Corned Beef, Knishes, Pickles and Cole Slaw along with the entertaining and informative class, "3218 Years of Jewish History in 74 Minutes or Less." Last but not least, finish your weekend on Sunday, October 21st at 2:30PM as The Ada Siegel Committee will be presenting an award winning documentary, "To Life: How Israeli Volunteers are Changing the World." The film portrays how 5 Israeli organizations have brought aid to over 100 countries. What an incredibly active High Holiday season! We were so fortunate to have Cantor Rich Walters with us this season. The chemistry between Rabbi Kane and Cantor Walters was wonderful. The interaction and involvement of all service goers was something to see (and feel). During Shemini Atzeret and Simchas Torah services, everyone wished Cantor Walters and Judy a safe trip back to Maryland, but begged them to return to Florida as soon as possible. High Holidays services were well attended. I hope it was inspiring and allowed for reflection for everyone, as it did for me. Jonah and the Whale was a hit again and thank you to the Sisterhood and everyone who sponsored the Break -the-fast. Thank you to Debra Rodensky who did a wonderful job as ritual chair. Thanks to everyone who had Aliyahs and took part in the services. But folks, the fun and activities don t end just yet. October is packed solid. The first Friday night service will also be Tot Shabbat. Our last Tot Shabbat had over 15 kids, and almost 20 kids helped decorate the Sukka. Let s keep this trend going. On Friday, October 19 th, our service will honor Ray and Gloria Max. We have a lunch and learn about Jewish history scheduled for Saturday, October 20 th, and on Sunday, October 21 st at 2:30 pm, the Ada Siegel committee will show a movie about how Israel comes to the aid of the world when in need. Also, don t forgot the big 20 th Anniversary dinner and dance party on Saturday, October 27 th. We will be holding this year s Poker Tournament in Pompano Beach, FL on November 4 th. Please call the office if you d like to participate. Also, we are in need of volunteers, so plan a nice weekend in South Florida where you can also help make the Poker Tournament a success. As I mentioned during Kol Nidre, given the fact that the Poker Tournament is not local and the fact that the room will hold fewer players I am concerned about the revenue we will be able to collect. Thus, please don t forget to send in your Yom Kippur pledges. It s also OK to add a few dollars more than what you pledged. In closing, I d like to mention 2 things. First, the Rabbi will not hold scheduled office hours during the month of October he ll resume scheduled office hours in November. However, during the month of October, you can call the synagogue office or the Rabbi directly to schedule a time to meet with him. Second, I d like to recognize Eva, the synagogue s Administrative Assistant who is doing an excellent job keeping us all organized. Thank y all for being a wonderful, loving, and warm family, dear friends. It is truly a privilege to be part of the Congregation B nai Torah family. Andy 3

First of all, please send in your $25 dues; we need your financial as well as your physical support. We want YOU on our membership roster. Sisterhood Shabbat will be October 19th. All of the service readings will be led by our officers and trustees which makes this a very special evening. We look forward to celebrating life events and special holidays together as a family of B nai Torah. 6

Dear Congregants: With giving out food to the Jewish needy for the High Holy Days, and having the Rosh Hashanah Luncheon for the Jewish seniors, this has been a very busy month. For the first time ever, we had 15 people show up that we didn't know were attending this luncheon. Bless DB Pickles for immediately sending out more food. We thank Jonathan Rotstein for subsidizing part of this luncheon. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to pick up seniors and thank you to all the entertainers who give us entertainment gratis. But most of all thank you Temple Beth-El for allowing us to have this luncheon at your beautiful social hall. A special thank you to Steve, Therese, Jill, Helen Farb, Sharon Mueller, Marcy Spertus, Betsy Levin and Ellen Berber who pitch in to make this so enjoyable for our seniors. Thank you to Lynn Ritter who has the job of checking in the seniors. What a job this was this time. Rabbi Barry Altman and Murray Steinberg who blew their shofars which for some of these seniors were the only time they would get the traditions of the holiday. Thank you Rabbi Karen Allan for leading the service and Rabbi Courtney Berman for being involved with the service and bringing her adorable baby for the seniors to see. Thank you everyone who contributed to both these programs. We had our Pacesetter's luncheon and we thank everyone involved for a wonderful evening at Oceanside Country Club. The speaker, the food and the atmosphere was just perfect. Thank you to everyone who started our 2019 Campaign. You are our leaders. We don't hear too much about Hurricane Florence but a lot of people have lost their homes. As the Federation has done for previous disasters, we are collecting funds that will go to individual families via their religious institutions. I was in a flood many years ago, and if someone had sent me funds, I would have been overjoyed. This will be the first funds that they will receive and the many letters we receive from folks that received aid from us in previous disasters, let us know how thrilled they were. Please send your checks to Jewish Federation 470 Andalusia Avenue Ormond Beach, Fl 32174 and in the memo column put Hurricane Florence. 100% of your funds will go to these families. A tax deductible letter will be sent to all. On Sunday, October 7th, for women and girls 12 and over, we are bringing in an expert from New York who will teach us how to defend ourselves. In this crazy world of ours, we need to know how to do this. The cost is $10.00 -mail to the address above but put in the memo column On Guard. This will be held at the Route 40 Club House, 240 Deer Lake Road, Ormond Beach, Fl 32174 and light refreshments will be served. She has won many awards and I urge you to take advantage of this program. Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year. Marvin Miller, President Gloria Max, Executive Director 7

Religious School Report by Helen Farb We have been very busy celebrating all the fall holidays. On Rosh Hashanah we learned about the holiday and sang and practiced blowing plastic shofars. Thanks to Charlie Moskowitz for coming and blowing a real shofar. Each child made their own round challah and received a jar of honey, thanks to Lea Moskowitz. The younger children painted wooden apples for an apple dish to use with apples and honey. The older children practiced their Hebrew parts for the Rosh Hashanah service. They were all superb. Thanks to the Daytona News Journal. It was fun to come back to participate in the service and be part of Jonah and the whale. We had a very large Kid and Tot Shabbat. Thirty people attended. Our chicken nuggets turned out to be Hebrew letters. Thanks to all those who help setup, cook, and cleanup. Many people helping, make the children's Shabbat easier. On Sunday, September 23, we prepared for Sukkot. Rabbi Kane told about the holiday and why we celebrated it. The children made paper chains and leaf mobiles to decorate the succah. Thanks to all those who built the succah. It looked beautiful when it was done. Thanks also to those who fed all of us after all the work. UPCOMING EVENTS: Friday, October 5: 6:00 pm Kid and Tot Shabbat Sunday,October 21 10:00 am Religious School / 12:30pm Meet at Trienah Meyer s house to distribute bags for trick or treat for Hunger (same neighborhood 124 Tuscany Bend St) Sunday, October 28 10:00 am Religious School / 12:00 pm Go to same neighborhood to pick up bags and deliver them to Beth -El (More details to follow) Helen 12
