1 October 2014 Tishrei 5775-Cheshvan 5775 Volume 22, Issue 14 Torah Times Together we honor G-d and Torah, Promote Spiritual Growth, and Strengthen Our Community Special Points of Interest: Forgiveness and Healing by Ray Weiss Congregation B nai Torah began the High Holidays on Sept. 20 th in a big way with the entertaining contemporary Jewish folk music of Peri Smilow and the enlightening stories of seven area rabbis and a cantor, including our own David Kane. The occasion was a community -wide Selichot hosted by Congregation B nai Torah, kicking off a period of personal introspection, forgiveness and CBT s Sweet Sixteen by Ray Weiss Sixteen doesn t seem like yesterday for most of us. But at Congregation B nai Torah it does. That s because this marks our synagogue s 16 th year of existence. And what better way to celebrate that big birthday than with a Sweet Sixteen dinner party and dance set for November 8 th at Pelican Bay Country Club in Daytona Beach. We had some people ask if we could have some kind of dance, said Chuck Weisman of the temple s Men s Club, the event s Peri Smilow with Rabbi and Mrs. Weilheimer and local temple guests healing. Very few places in the country can pull off what you re doing here, to get together like this, Smilow said before the start of the sponsor. We looked for an occasion, and someone said it was the 16 th year (we are now in our 17th year) of the temple. So it seemed like a perfect opportunity to merge and celebrate a bit of history with some good food and drink, while dusting off the dancing shoes. A DJ will be taking requests to play the whole time, Weisman said. There will be a diversity of music from the 50s and 60s to now, contemporary to oldies. The tentative schedule calls for hors d oeuvres and a cash bar from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. combined late-night service. Each rabbi spoke of the importance of being able to forgive, but also stressed the need to accept the forgiveness of another to help cleanse the soul and spirit. The rabbis blended biblical and personal stories. Continued on pg. 10 followed by a sit-down dinner and then dancing until 10:30 p.m. It s an adult function open to everyone, Weisman said. We re not honoring anyone specifically. It s more a celebration (of Congregation B nai Torah). Tickets for the Sweet Sixteen semi-formal dinner dance are $45 each and can be bought until the end of October at the temple s office. 3 Page 3 Volume 22, Issue 14 Religious School News by Helen Farb On Sunday, September 14 th, we held our first Sunday School. Rosalie Morrissey, Justin Selis, and Sydney Nussbaum were classroom assistants. Ten children were present and Rabbi Kane talked about Rosh Hashanah. He taught us many new songs and we practiced some familiar holiday songs. The children created their own baked apple. While those cooked, cards were produced for all those who are ill. For the first time in Sunday School, we had enough students to divide them up into different age groups. Rosalie, Sydney, and I took the youngest group. Our children made a whale with Jonah and sea creatures inside his stomach. Lisa Ravede and Esther Morse worked with the second and third graders who heard the stories of Creation and Adam and Eve. They made a circle map of the seven days of creation and added pictures of events that happened each day. They also made a mural of the Garden of Eden. Rabbi and Justin Selis worked with the middle school children and high school students. On Sunday, September 21 st, Rabbi Kane taught Sunday Learning Adventure with the year olds. We have been very busy and are now looking forward to celebrating Yom Kipper. On Sunday, October 5 th, we will learn about Sukkot and Simchat Torah and decorate the Sukkah. Pictures on page 2. Ritual Committee Report by Debra Rodensky The High Holidays are here. Everyone should have received their honors assignments in the mail by now. We've already had an amazing Selichot experience with the Peri Smilow workshop and concert. Our Tot Shabbat program continues to grow in attendance and popularity. Our last Tot Shabbat was on September 12th. Tot Shabbats are usually the 2nd Friday of the month. Check the Torah Times calendar or the CBT website to confirm. The Rabbi has also begun a Lunch and Torah Study program on the 2nd Saturday of the month. This program will begin at 12:15 after services. Please RSVP if you would like to attend so we can order enough food for lunch. The six week Summer 2015 session and eight week Fall 2015 are open. 6 Page 6 Torah Times Sisterhood News by Sue Goldberg September arrived fast and furious as our Kitchen Angels stepped up to the plate as always!!! The month started with a Shabbat Italian Dinner, which was very well attended. Selichot had a wonderful turnout of the CBT Family as well as many others from our community!!! Then it was time to prepare for Rosh Hashanah. Apples and honey were served after the Rosh Hashanah service with the hopes that everyone has a sweet New Year. Then it was time for the Kitchen Angels to prepare for Yom Kippur Break-the-Fast. At the end of the day, everyone was ready to eat the scrumptious food. Next was Sukkah building!! All the workers and decorators had a light lunch after all their hard work. Thank you to Lea and anyone else who has helped directly or indirectly in the kitchen!!! What would be a Jewish gathering without food? Remember food is also present after Friday and Saturday services. The Kitchen Angels work very hard to provide food for all occasions. Extra hands are always WELCOME! Please contact Lea Moskowitz at to volunteer. Sisterhood can use help preparing, setting up, and cleaning after each event. Please consider Becoming a Kitchen Angel. Our first general meeting was held on September 11th. We had a fantastic turn out of Sisterhood members as well as NEW members to Sisterhood. Thank you to Evelyn Ladau for her creative program. We reminisced about how we celebrated the holidays growing up. For me, it brought back memories of my family attending Shul with my Bubbie and Papa followed by an early dinner after services at their home unlike many others that had their Rosh Hashanah Dinner later in the day. Evelyn ended the program with a thought provoking question.what would you do if you had a million bucks! Thank you to all of you who have sent in your dues. We had a fantastic lunch for our seniors and gave out gift certificates and food to our Jewish needy. Thank you to everyone who answered our appeals. Unfortunately we live in a turbulent world today and we must be vigilant. I attended a conference in New York and we learned that Jewish students in universities will be bombarded with all Greetings! kinds of anti-semitic propaganda by a group called Students for Justice in Palestine. I am sending this note to you because our Jewish students need to be aware. Every student deserves a campus that is physically and emotionally safe and conducive to learning. Please exercise your moral and legal obligation to uphold and protect this right on your campus. I thought that this is important informa- tion that must be told. Again, a Happy and healthy New Year. Shalom, Dr. Howard Pranikoff, President Gloria Max, Executive Director It has been brought to our attention that the anti-semitic, hate group "Students for Justice in Palestine" has called for International Days of Action on College Campuses. There will be ongoing events that will be happening especially this year because of the recent war. Please if you have children or grandchildren at the Universities warn them about this. The SJP is calling for "civil disobedience" (ie: breaking the law). We must act now to counter the hateful harassment and discrimination propagated by this group against Jewish students and supporters of Israel. Please feel free to write your own letters to university officials. In addition to promoting the SJP's usual hateful agenda to boycott, divest from and sanction the Jewish State of Israel, these "Day of Actions" specifically calls for "civil disobedience" - in other words, the deliberate violation of the law, threatening public safety and potentially leading to physical injuries and property damage. The "Days of Actions" also intends to impose a host of other restrictions that violate academic freedom, free speech, and other fundamental personal freedoms, including: (1) preventing U.S. educators from working with academics and academic institutions in Israel; (2) ending "study abroad" programs in Israel; (3) blocking university presidents from visiting Israel; and (4) preventing universities from communicating with Jewish groups and representatives of the Israeli government. Please do not tolerate anti-semitism on your campus. For the protection of your campus community, it is imperative that you take the following steps, in advance of these massive protests. 1. Publicly condemn this so-called "Days of Action" as hateful and anti-semitic, and make it clear that harassment, intimidation and the interference with civil rights and freedoms will not be tolerated; 2. Make it clear that violators of the law and/or of university rules and policies will be held fully accountable and punished. 3. Augment security to keep the university community safe.

8 Page 8 Torah Times Men s Club News by Phil Ringle The Men s Club has had a productive Fall. Thanks to the hard work of Stuart Amols we held our First Annual Men s Club Fall Picnic. Assisted by Scott Selis on the grill, the picnic attracted over 45 people. The food was excellent and the conversation lively. The Club also provided parking assistance to handle the crowd at the Peri Smilow Concert. Thanks to Steve Marks, Norm Feldman, Charles Stein and Chuck Weisman for braving the rain to get all of our guests in safely. The Fall meeting of the Men s Club is scheduled for Wednesday, October 22nd at 7:00 pm at the synagogue. Chuck Weisman says the business meeting will be followed by a poker game for anyone interested. Please let the CBT office know if you plan to attend. If you have not paid your $18.00 membership fee please send in your check made payable to the Congregation B nai Torah Men s Club or bring it with you to the meeting. The response has been promising for the Sweet Sixteen Dinner Dance. 10 Page 10 Torah Times by Ray Weiss continued from pg. 1 If we are forgiving, heaven will treat us the same way. - Rabbi Perras It s very hard for someone to ask us for forgiveness, said Daytona Beach s Temple Israel s Rabbi Gary Perras. It can be even harder to accept that forgiveness. But he added that holding a grudge is poison to the body, that wallowing in a hate festers and destroys. But forgiveness heals and is liberating. If we are forgiving, heaven will treat us the same way, Rabbi Perras said, joking that more people with feuds usually can be found in a synagogue than almost anywhere else. But not on this night, when visitors of Congregation B nai Torah at one point in the service were asked to turn to the person next to them and ask and receive forgiveness. Her mother is one of five girls. Four of the sisters lived in the Bronx. Rita lived in New Rochelle where she was born. Her father is one of four children, three brothers and a sister. Rita s mother and father lived in shtetls and came to the U.S. in 1927/29 respectively. They came to the U.S. by piece meal from Bialystok, Poland and Grunder, Russia/Poland border. They met and married in the U.S. They were in the dry cleaning business as they were tailors and dressmakers. She is the first of the family to be born in the United States. She has one brother, Mel, 4 years her junior who lives in South Florida. Rita married immediately after her high school graduation. Rita has 2 daughters, Susie and Judy from her first husband. She has three grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Judy has 3 daughters: Christina, Mardi and Brittane. Mardi has 3 children, one boy and two girls. Rita worked at J. H. Harvey Design Furniture for 14 years. Rita was one of the first women to work in the retail furniture. She moved to Daytona Beach in 1976 where she opened Home Design on Beach Street. In 1990 the store moved to the Home Depot Mall on International Speedway. The store closed 3 years ago. Rita still works from her home. A sports enthusiast, Rita is a fan of Orlando Magic, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Chicago Cubs. She also was an ardent golfer. Her hobbies and talents are mahjongg, of course, and sewing, knitting, crocheting, and embroidering, cross stitching, and Jewish cooking. She was one of the original members of Congregation B nai Torah. She was the first Treasurer of Congregation B nai Torah Sisterhood, later she served as Co -President of Sisterhood with Lynn Hartman and is co-chair of the Catering Committee with Lea Moskowitz. Rita lived in the Trails for 19 years and has been living in LPGA for 13 years. Rita and Bill have been married for 25 years.

Volusia County set a record for rainfall this September. Many streets were constantly flooded and a reasonable person might wonder what would happen if there were just a few more inches of rain added to the swollen rivers and streams throughout the county? Apparently, we share an ecosystem that is both fragile and resilient. One month of extra rain and what passes for normal life is disrupted for hundreds of thousands of people. Wildlife adapts to the flooding as well with different neighborhoods suddenly seeing deer, raccoons, armadillo, opossum, and the occasional bear. People generally react to the sight of creatures in their neighborhoods with everything from Take a picture, to Call 911. The chaos of all this extra water does not give us special permissions or rights. There s no rule that says I stepped in a puddle, so I deserve more money in my paycheck. There s no custom that includes I got soaked to the skin getting to my car, so I get my favorite dessert. There's no cultural nuance that starts with My entire house is flooded, and ends with So I get a new iphone. The reverse is also true, we don t experience 30 days of soak, dry-out, repeat, because we have behaved poorly. During these holiday times, Judaism reminds us that having a faith tradition should help us maintain our poise when life rains down upon us. It doesn t matter if we are soaked with financial issues, health concerns, or relationship challenges. Our tradition is designed to give us a moment of respite, a moment of relief while we gather our strength and strategies to face whatever has made us feel like we are walking through life with wet socks, or worse. Ultimately, just as the natural ecosystem in our county needs a good soaking now and then to grow, so too do we need some adversity to prove to ourselves that we are more than a series of daily habits, but rather are formidable in our abilities to be thoughtful, kind, and compassionate even on a day when trouble rains down upon us.
