The Megillah reading was led by Charles Moskowitz, ably assisted by our religious school students and other volunteers. Everyone present made noise (Boo Haman!) and made merry as we re-enacted the Purim story. The Sisterhood provided delicious hamantaschen and ice cream to top the evening off in a tasty way.

2 V OLU ME 1 6, I S SU E 6 Notes from Rabbi S. David Kane The first prayer for healing is recorded in the Torah. Moses asks God to heal his sister Miriam from a skin disease by imploring, "Heal her O God and she shall be healed." As I type this at home, entering my second week with pneumonia, I am struck by the ways in which we heal from injury. Everyone has seen how our bodies repair a cut, day by day, until the scab falls off and all evidence of the injury is gone. More grievous injuries sometimes require stitches, which can leave a scar. Sometimes people use the scar as a touchstone, bringing back the memory of the injury and the pain it caused simply by touching the scar. I suppose the same is true of emotional and spiritual injuries. We are drawn, almost hypnotically, to the memories of when someone hurt us. Judaism asks us to only look back as a cautionary tale, to avoid putting ourselves in painful situations again. Our faith does not approve of looking back to keep alive anger or hate. The reasoning is simple. Each moment we spend dwelling on our injuries is a moment we can't spend on something more worthy, like expressing love, kindness or appreciation, or being involved in good deeds. It has also been said that a person can spend a long tine trying to change the past. Will the past ever change? Of course not. Our faith asks us to stop carrying the burden of pain inflicted by others long enough to be a source of light to those who need us. *** Thanks to all those who have helped keep services and the school going during my illness. Rabbi Kane PAGE 2 Message from the Co-Presidents: Dr. Charles Stein & Bari Amols Another great month at B Nai Torah! Every Shabbat this month had great attendance and support, as usual, fro so many of our wonderful congregants. Thank you to everyone who came out, and we hope everyone enjoyed the holiday! We want to wish Rabbi Kane a speedy recovery! Additionally, we d like to extend a warm welcome to Melissa, B nai Torah s new secretary! Shalom, Charles Stein, Co-President Bari Amols, Co-President FANTASTIC CHANCE TO DEDICATE A BOOK!!! Shalom, Barbara Ringle & Roberta Feldman Co-presidents RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS: By Dr. Ken Nusbaum How do our religious school students decide what costumes to wear for Purim? There are so many choices, they might decide by roll of the dice. Parents will again teach students how to prepare for Pesach by making horse radish, matzo ball soup, and charoset in Sunday school on March 24th. See you then! Ken Nusbaum

We collected over $4,600 which definitely helps our food bank. Thank you Rabbi Kane, Congregation B nai Torah volunteers and the Deepstack Charity Classic for covering all the expenses, therefore 100% went to help the less fortunate in our community. On Sunday, March 10th, there will be a Chocolate Seder sponsorced by the Women s Division of the Jewish Federation. This Seder will be under the supervision of Lynne Ritter and her committee. Two years ago, she undertook this tremendous job and the event was superb. Every woman who attended said that it was the highlight of the year. They can only accommodate 50 women because there is a lot of work involved in this venue. It is exclusive for families who donate the minimum of $500 to the various charities of the Jewish Federation in The cost is $54 which will be given to the 2013 Passover Appeal. We have many Jewish people who can t afford the food for Passover and these funds will help the Federation to supply them with the food for the Passover Holidays. The Chocolate Seder will be held at Temple Beth-El. For reservations send your check to Mrs. Sue Abel, 8 Creek Bend Way, Ormond Becah, FL Don t miss this event! The Senior Seder will be held on Wednesday, March 20th 2013 at Indigo Banquet Center at 11:00am. For most of these seniors from assisted living and nursing homes, this is the only tradition of the Passover Holiday that they will experience. Lunch, including the famous matzo ball soup and Ray Max s famous charoset, entertainment and Passover Seder plates for each table. A Passover appeal letter has been sent out and we would appreciate any donation, large or small to defray the expenses of this luncheon. The Endowment Committee of the Jewish Federation is again giving out grants from the interest they receive from their principal. In order to present a grant, rules will have to be observed. Grant rules will be sent to each Temple. Please send in your grant request to Mrs. Lynne Ritter, President of the Endowment Fund, 470 Andalusia Avenue, Ormond Beach, FL by the beginning of May. These grants cannot b used to benefit any one person. Have a joyful and spiritual Passover. Yours truly, Gloria Max, Executive Director LIBRARY NOTES: By Dr. Marvin Lewis Herman Wouk, noted Jewish author of the Caine Mutiny, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1952, has written his latest work of fiction at the age of 97. Entitled The Lawgiver, it relates the contemporary effects of a group of cinema moguls to put together a movie about the life of Moses. Be forewarned, the life of Moses is not the subject of the book but a rich array of personalities that are; ranging from producers to directors, lawyers and the writer: a delusional daughter of a Hasidic Rabbi. The book is rich with Jewish content and the story is told through a seamless library of letters, s and notes, the author and his late wife are characters in the novel. The writing is perfect prose and the novel is 230 pages but reads easily. Putting together a movie is an interesting and topical subject and Mr. Wouk masterfully includes love, affairs, treachery and conflict in a unique fashion. We thank Dr. Lewis for this month s book review. We are looking for someone to write a review for March. Please call Melissa at or cbt@cfl.rr.com if you would like to do one. Melissa will be replacing me in February and we welcome her aboard. Vicki
