Two hours of preparation were over and the first of more than 250 out-of-work and homeless men and women sauntered inside. They picked up a free hot lunch and headed toward back tables at the Daytona Beach facility sponsored by Halifax Urban Ministries. Folks I m glad you re here today and I m sure everyone else is, too, said a middleaged woman already carrying a blanket and shoulder bag. Those words are as good as gold to the two shifts of Congregation B nai Torah volunteers making the second of three annual visits to the soup kitchen. Helen Farb said the decision to help began two years ago with the Sunday religious school children. Now, as many as 20 adults from the temple usually help, as they did in late February, preparing fruit salad, buttering bread and serving food and desserts. The rabbi and I talked and felt it would be good for the kids to see that a need was out there to help people, she said. Many other area religious congregations help throughout the year feeding the needy at the facility. Joe Scaffidi, the head cook, said his soup kitchen relies on local volunteers and companies and people who donate food that s served at lunch and dinner throughout the week. All of our groups are so reliable, he said, looking at a large calendar on a nearby wall with each day filled with the names of numerous houses of worship. We depend on the community to help us. Alan and Ellen Rabin have been Congregation B nai Torah volunteers on two Sundays. 2 Page 2 CBT Photo Gallery The Torah Times A great big thank you goes out to all those who helped in the Bridge of Hope Soup Kitchen on Sunday, February 23rd. We served 193 people. We folded silverware, made sandwiches and fruit salad, prepared desserts, served food, and cleaned up. Thanks go to Saralee Morrissey, Marvin and Bev Lewis and their two friends, Jesse Acosta, Adriana Albanese, Luke and Ken Haberman, Harriet Fritts, Betty Berdichevsky, Carol Hyman, Lauren Hoven, Barbara and Harvey Singer, and Ellen and Alan Rabin. Everyone who comes for food is so appreciative. It is truly a Mitzvah to help there. Please join us on Sunday, June 1st when we go there again. - Helen Farb

3 Page 3 Volume 22, Issue 7 Notes from Rabbi David S. Kane We live on a murderous planet. Syria. Iraq. Thailand. Central Africa. Argentina. Mexico. Ukraine. And more. We don't have to listen to more than one news report to see evidence of violence against innocents. We live on a hopeful planet. America. Canada. Australia. Germany. France. England. Japan. Israel. And more. We don't have to read more than one website to find people rushing aid to sufferers who they have never met. We know that murder is wrong. We know that far away from here people are having their lives taken away by the powerfully unjust. What is our responsibility? Do we urge our government to intervene? Do we send bombs? Troops? We know that hope is powerful. For generations, hope and opportunity have been linked. What is our responsibility for providing both? Do we urge our government to invest in a distant people? Do we send food? Money? Scholarships? The people of Judaism emerged onto the world stage thousands of years ago, with stories of alliances in the name of Message from the Co-Presidents: Dr. Charles Stein & Bari Spring is soon upon us, and along with warmer weather we take the opportunity for spring cleaning. This includes removing the winter dust collection from our minds as well and recommitting ourselves to be a positive influence for the institutions that we feel strongly about; I hope this includes Congregation B nai Torah. I want to commend the Men s Club and especially Chuck Weisman for a wonderful and well organized Super Bowl Party this past January. What an event, with door prizes and raffle tickets, providing the winners with autographed pictures and items from the big leagues as well as blankets and sportswear from the two Super Bowl contenders. There was poker and Mah Jongg, fantastic food and drink, and a wonderful time for all. The only thing missing was you. Rabbi Shapiro has filled in wonderfully for Rabbi Kane while he and Val were away. We want to say Mazel Tov to the happy couple as they recently celebrated their wedding anniversary. Bari and I will soon complete our second year as co-presidents how time flies...and our annual congregational meeting is only a few justice and with tales of uncommon mercies. In our modern era, our challenges resemble theirs, to defeat those who thirst for power above all else, to strive for a society where the least powerful have the right to more than just existence, and to create a world of hope and opportunity so that the suffering masses may imagine a better future. Judaism demands that we do what we can. If our nation cannot stop the bloodshed everywhere, then we must urge our leaders to isolate those supersized thugs, and use our economic might to defeat their agendas. Continued on pg 7... months away. We ve had sad news and happy news during the past few months regarding congregants and their families. And that s what we at CBT are all about. Being there and supporting our family, during the good times as well as the not so good times. So, get your spring cleaning in order and stay involved in CBT activities and services. Happy spring! Ritual Committee Report by Debra Rodensky Shabbat Across America services are on Fri., March 7th at 6 with dinner at 7. During Shabbat Across America, Jews from all over the United States and Canada invite their Jewish friends to the synagogue to enjoy services and a festive Shabbat meal. The Megillah Reading and Costume Party will be on Sat., March 15th at 7pm. Costumes are encouraged as our annual fun-filled Purim holiday begins with groggers, costumes, stories, and haman taschen.

For the eighteenth year, hundreds, maybe thousands, of synagogues will join in spirit for this continent-wide celebration of faith and food. The organizer the National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP) promotes the event as a chance to: Turn an ordinary Friday night into something extraordinary sharing your experience with tens of thousands of Jews across North America. NJOP says its annual Shabbat program is aimed at providing explanatory services, traditional rituals, tasty meals and lively discussions, as well as the opportunity to spend the evening with like-minded people, friends, and family. 7 Page 7 Volume 22, Issue 7 JEWISH FEDERATION OF VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES 470 Andalusia Avenue - Ormond Beach, Florida (386) FAX. # (386) Dear Congregants: The Endowment Fund of the Jewish Federation is pleased to present Adult Education Classes on Sunday, March 2, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Temple Beth-El. Rabbi Barry Altman will talk about "Against All Odds: Jewish Resistance during the Holocaust" Rabbi David Kane of Congregation B'nai Torah will talk about "Satan and the Creation of Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism" Rabbi Gary Perras of Temple Israel will talk about "Bringing the Torah to Life through Midrash" Everyone is welcome to participate. This program is free and light refreshments will be served. For more information, please call the chairwoman, Helen Farb at or her at helenfarb4@yahoo.com and let her know which classes you want to attend. You will need to pick one Rabbi's class for the first session and one Rabbi's class for the second session. March 30th at l:00 pm the annual walk-athon to benefit the Jerry Doliner Food Bank will be held at CBT and funded by Rabbi David Kane and Congregation B'nai Torah. You will receive information in the mail. Please say a special prayer for our brothers and sisters in Israel and around the world. Anti-Semitism is increasing at a faster pace, and many of our people are living in fear. Our Federation funds only the social services in Israel and we are proud that we have purchased two responder fire trucks, three bomb shelters that are used as schools during the day at the poorest areas in Israel and a pediatric room at Hadassah Hospital Mother and Child Pavilion. Of the funds we collect, only 8% are administration fees. We might be small but we make a huge difference locally, in Israel and in 60 countries around the world. The Cinematique theater, in cooperation with the Jewish Federation, will hold a Jewish Film series in May. Watch for announcements. Looking forward to spring. Shalom, Dr. Howard Pranikoff, President Gloria Max, Executive Director Notes from Rabbi David S. Kane... continued from pg 3 Judaism has an urgent perspective on poverty, the best strategy being to provide opportunity, but the least strategy to provide subsistence. Israel is not a perfect country, however, it is one of the finest exporters of justice and hope, from missile defense technology to medical innovations to agricultural advances to disaster recovery. Perhaps as Jews, while we wait for our leaders to sort through the conflicting universe of international needs, one of the best ways we can improve the world, whether to reduce evil or increase hope, is to support Israel as it navigates how to thrive in a dangerous neighborhood while still being a "light unto the nations".

8 Page 8 The Torah Times CONTACT HELEN FARB ABOUT FUTURE SOUP KITCHEN EVENTS...Continued from pg. 1 We stay as long as they need us, he said. For me, it s important to be a part of the community, to give back and serve the people who are here. This is really impressive what (Halifax Urban Ministries) does here. It s also important to Ken Haberman Bridge of Hope Mitzvah by Ray Weiss and his teenage son, Luke, a senior at Spruce Creek High School. It s rewarding coming in and seeing and helping people, he said of the personal and immediate impact he can make just cutting up apples and oranges for fruit salad. Other things I ve volunteered for are usually behind the scenes. With this you see the affect you make right away. You see the results. The next Sunday work day at the soup kitchen for Congregation B nai Torah will be sometime in June, according to Helen Farb. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact her. Memorable Moments with Marvin Lewis, M.D. by Carole Miller Dr. Lewis and I are both on the Visiting Committee of Congregation B nai Torah. I thought I was a Professional Volunteer but Marvin tops me. He is a Hospice volunteer who sees eight patients on Thursdays and Fridays. On Mondays, he mentors third and fourth grade students in math and reading. On Tuesdays, Marvin is at Daytona Beach Police Station doing cleric work for Victims Advocate. Wednesdays, he and Beverly take their grandchildren to Congregation Reformed Judaism (located in Orlando) for Hebrew School. Marvin s hobbies are as varied as his volunteer services. Reading is at the top of the list. Swimming and bowling (on Sundays) are included. Every morning you can find Marvin at the gym working out. As part of his continuing education, he is learning Hebrew. He began the Congregation B nai Torah Library. He also taught Judaism for two years to six students at Congregation B nai Torah when we were in the Renaissance Plaza. Marvin was born in Pittsburg, PA. He had five brothers (one survives.) He attended Duquesne University in Pittsburg (a Catholic school), on a scholarship where he received a B.S. in Chemistry. He also attended University of Pittsburg where he received his M.D. and Montefiore (a Jewish school), where he did research and taught Hematology and Medical Oncology. His training took him to Salt Lake City Utah (where he studied Hematology), The National Cancer Institute in Washington, D.C., (where he studied Oncology), Durham, N.C. (where he Interned and did his Residency ), and Murfreesboro and Jackson, Tennessee. He met Beverly on a blind date on November 1, at an All Saints Day Dance. They dated for two years and were married in They have 3 children: Stuart who lives in Kissimmee, Nathan who lives in Indiana, and Saralee Morrissey who lives in Ormond Beach. There are six grandchildren. Valerie is 11, Owen is 9, Tommy is 19, Rosalie is 16, Alexandra is 22, and Grant is 19. Marvin retired in 1998, and he and Beverly moved to Florida. Marvin and Beverly are Snowbirds who reside in Chicago from the end of May to the middle of August. On March 10th, Dr. Lewis will be the young age of 80. February 19 th through March 20 th is the astrological sign of Pisces and we are great people!

9 Page 9 Volume 22, Issue 7 Religious School News by Helen Farb The Religious School met on Sunday, February 9 th. Our topic was the Land of Israel. The students learned about Jerusalem, Haifa, and Tel Aviv. They found these places on a big map of Israel, and each student had their own map of Israel also and used the book A Great Israel Scavenger Hunt to find the answers to clues in these cities. We ate candy bars, cookies, dates, and figs which are Israeli foods. Asher Ravede lead us in all the blessings over the food and drink. I told the story of Joshua and the Battle of Jericho. The children built walls of paper and blocks and Joshua knocked the walls down. I was ably assisted by Rosalie Morrissey. The children love her and I could not do many of the activities without her help. Walk-a-thon News by Ray Weiss Couch potatoes unite. If those TV exercise shows won t do it, maybe helping a good cause will get you up and out. It s almost time for the Jerry Doliner Food Bank Walkathon for the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties. The fundraiser helps the notfor-profit organization feed the hungry, no matter a person's faith. Rabbi David Kane of Congregation B nai Torah said he hopes to draw more than 60 walkers for the March 30 th event that begins at 1 p.m. Thank you for sending me good wishes on my 80th birthday! Ray Max To All who so thoughtfully remembered my 80th birthday, thank you so much.
