Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 18, 2018 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Mark 13:31 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever (Daniel 12:1-3). Psalm You are my inheritance, O Lord! (Psalm 16). Christ, seated at the right of the Father, is our assurance of passing through the testing times. Reflect: We do not know the time or the hour of the end of our lives or the end of history, but it is to our benefit to read the signs of the times and be ready for the last encounter. Blessed are those who live such lives that they can look forward to the encounter. Even if we haven t lived the best of lives as God wants, it is still not late to effect a turn around. All is well that ends well. And let the end be well. Pray: Recite the prayer for a graceful and peaceful death. From: Fr. FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora It is the weekend before Thanksgiving Day and my heart s already filled with gratefulness. First, I would like to thank all those who have turned in their Stewardship Commitment card, I did mine last week too. If you haven t filled out or submitted a Commitment Card, it s never too late, we would love to hear from you. Earlier this month, I, together with few parishioners, graduated from the NERT or Neighborhood Emergency Rescue Team Training. I am now a certified NERT volunteer. Thanks to the SFFD for the opportunity. Extending my gratitude too to our Holy Name Emergency Team, led by Dick and Madeline Morten and Ramsey Ramos, for their assistance especially in the use of the Flanagan Center. Thank God, after a long wait and extensive repairs, our rectory living room is back together now. For some time, we have had holes in the ceilings, holes in the walls and even in the floor. We have opened up the ceiling, opened up some walls and ripped out the carpet to solve a heating system leak. Of course, we had to remove all the furniture and appliances. Putting them back and figuring the new interior design was made easy with the help of the Quock Family Justin, Julie, Ryan and Natalie. Thanks to this family, everything was put back together after the 9:30 AM Sunday mass last weekend. From time to time, our house has wear and tear. Just as in our spiritual life, we undergo a kind of decline due to sin. Thanks to God s forgiveness through the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession we can put our spiritual life back together. That gift of forgiveness is what some of our HN students will receive this weekend as they have their First Reconciliation. Just to remind you that this Sacrament is made available not only before our weekend masses, but anytime you wish to receive it. Just call the office or approach any priest. Somebody once said: There's always something to be thankful for. If you can't pay your bills, you can be thankful you're not one of your creditors. And here s coming from an unknown author: I want to say thank you to all the people who walked into my life and made it outstanding, and all the people who walked out of my life and made it fantastic. A rich man looked through his window and saw a poor man picking something from his dustbin... He said, Thank GOD I'm not poor. The poor man looked around and saw a naked man misbehaving on the street... He said, Thank GOD I'm not mad. The mad man looked ahead and saw an ambulance carrying a patient... He said, Thank GOD am not sick. Then a sick person in hospital saw a trolley taking a dead body to the mortuary... He said, Thank GOD I'm not dead. Only a dead person cannot thank God. Why don't you thank GOD today for all your blessings and for the gift of life... for another beautiful day. Happy Thanksgiving Day! from the Priests & Staff of Holy Name of Jesus Parish page 3 STEWARDSHIP CORNER Make Everyday Thanksgiving. At first glance, our Thanksgiving gatherings may seem to be about being together and enjoying a meal with each other. We may view Thanksgiving as the start of the holiday season, and many will begin their Christmas shopping just a few hours after the Thanksgiving meal, on what has come to be known as black Friday. Look a little deeper, however, and Thanksgiving is about so much more. It is a time to pause and reflect upon all we have for which to be grateful. We see how abundantly blessed we are, even in challenging circumstances, and the meal becomes a true celebration of the gifts of life, relationships, and faith that fill our lives, minds, and hearts with grace and goodness. It is a feast of gratitude. On the surface, the Mass is a ritual comprised of a series of songs, prayers, and gestures. We stand, sing, make the sign of the cross, sit, listen, kneel, and pray. Reflect more deeply, however, and we grasp the greater meaning and impact of the Eucharist. Christ is truly present with and among us; we are fed by word and sacrament, and are drawn into union with Christ and one another. It is about joining together with grateful hearts and resolving to share Christ s life, love, and mercy with others. The very meaning of the word eucharist is thanksgiving. It is a feast of gratitude. Gather around the table, at home and at the celebration of the Eucharist. Give thanks. Grow in gratitude. Let your life be changed. Share with others, especially those who are in need. Make every day Thanksgiving. GROW AS STEWARDS! It was not you who chose me; it was I who chose you, So go forth and bear fruit. John 15:16 PRAY Dear God, thank you for the unique gift that is my life. Open my heart to the ways you are calling me to give, large and small and show me where you are offering to help me grow in and share your love, mercy and gifts. DISCERN What would giving all you have look like? If time and money were no issue, what would you do for God? ACT Do three acts of gratitude for Thanksgiving: Participate in a food drive Help with Thanksgiving dinner Write letters of appreciation Blessings on your Stewardship Journey!

FAITH FORMATION CATECHESIS PASTORAL OUTREACH Director: Sr. Cristina Ovejera, FdCC crisfdcc2016@yahoo.com (415)664-8590 REFLECTION: November The earth is settling into silence. Whether you are near the ocean, the desert, or the mountain, earth is giving us signals of sleep in the Northern Hemisphere. We can take these signs to heart and allow our own bodies to slow into quiet. It is the season of reflection on a good harvest, a time to put closure on the work of the fields and fold our hands in gratitude. The Church enters the last week of the Liturgical Year. We hear the warnings of the end time. November brings us a feast of Paradise (All Saints and all Souls), and ends with a flourish as we proclaim Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. -Jeanne Hunt, Celebrating Saints and Seasons Advent Giving Trees It is that time of the year again! On the week of Thanksgiving Day, our Church Environment Committee will put up the traditional Advent trees at the back of the church. We will fill them with gift tags, each with a wish from the clients of our city s Pomeroy Center. Once again, we ask parishioners to participate in this Advent practice of sharing your treasures with those in need. Thank you in advance for always supporting this outreach program of Holy Name of Jesus. Pastoral Ministries Exhibits The various ministries and programs in our parish are on display at the back of the church this weekend. Please take advantage to go through them. We encourage all parishioners to volunteer in one or two ministries, according to your talents, inclination, and time. Lay Canossians Hosting Quarterly Homebound/Seniors Mass The Mass be held on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 1:30 PM in the Flanagan Center. We will celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. We will pray the Rosary before Mass. The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be given within the Mass. There will be a simple reception immediately following the Mass. Building Bridges of Hope is the main theme of this year s Santa Clara Faith Formation Conference. It will be held on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, December 1, 2018, at the Santa Clara Convention Center. For more information, visit www.scffc.org. Canossian Lay Associates are women and men, single, married or widowed, who want to live their baptismal commitment with the spirit of dedication inspired by the charism of St. Magdalene of Canossa, united with the Canossian Sisters, Fathers and Brothers. Their spirituality is the Greatest Love of Christ Crucified and Mary, Mother of Charity at the foot of the cross. Their mission is to make Jesus Christ known that He may be loved. If you or someone you know is interested in knowing more about the Lay Canossians, you are invited to their meeting every first Sunday of the month, at 2:00-4:00 PM in the Flanagan Center. You may also ask Jim Regan, Susan Logan, Angela Testani of Sr. Cristina for more information. Religious Education Teachers and Students and Parents are expected to be at the 9:30AM Mass every Sunday. Please occupy the reserved pews in front of the ambo (podium), left side facing the sanctuary. This is important for everyone to be present, especially to the students preparing for First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Thank you for your cooperation in the Christian formation of your children. page 4 HOLY NAME Youth Ministry Forthcoming Activities: Saturday, December 15, 2018 Mass at 5:00 PM Prepare care packages for the poor Faith sharing groups on Advent.
