People who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do. The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake described in today s Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds. But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time - June 21, 2015 (The next three columns including this one have been written by me before I left for Europe.) Today is Father s Day and I wish to extend to all Fathers a wish for a Happy Father s Day. Of course, the most common title of a Catholic priest is Father. And, I certainly feel honored to be called Father and I truly feel that we are family. There are some who question this title because of what Jesus said: Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven. (Matthew 23:9) This means that no one is to be adored like God the Father. It doesn t mean that we can t use the word father. For Jesus says in Matthew 15: 4 and 19: 19 Honor your father and mother. In Luke, Jesus tells the parable of the Prodigal Son and talks about the father frequently in that story. And in 1 Corinthians 4: 14, Paul writes: Even if you should have countless guides to Christ, yet you do not have many fathers, for I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. And, of course, father is also what we call the man married to our mother! So, father is a good word for our fathers and a privileged term for Catholic priests. There are many other father figures besides a Catholic priest some of whom like a priest do not have children, but certainly have taken up the role of being a father figure; for example, step fathers, adopting fathers, coaches, teachers, Boy Scout leaders, religious orders of brothers etc. Again, to ALL to whom it applies HAPPY FATHER S DAY! I want to honor one special father today: Lenny Urso. Lenny has been working for Holy Spirit from the very beginning. At the time of the parish s start, Lenny was employed by Ecolab (providing water, hygiene and energy technologies and services). Lenny started out as Director of Religious Education for Grades K through 8. Eventually, Lenny was hired at Bishop Gorman High School in the Theology Department. As his work continued and expanded at Gorman, Lenny needed to lessen his work load here at Holy Spirit and so he transferred Middle School (grades 6 through 8) to Louie Latina, our Youth Minister. Then, Lenny was promoted to Department Chair of Theology/Campus Ministry at Gorman and also took on many other jobs: coach for lacrosse, Dean of Summer School, announcer at many athletic events and Press Box Manager for all stadium events. In addition to all this, he is a family man: married to Kristal and is the father of three children: Ben, Zach and Emaleigh. Yes, he is a busy man. So, it s time once again for Lenny to step back from some of his duties here at Holy Spirit. With Anna Forsberg taking over Religious Education (grades K through 5 now having grown to over 200 children!), Lenny will be the liaison between that program and Bishop Gorman. But, most of all, thank you, Lenny, for the great program you started and managed for the last eight years. You have done a magnificent job. And a well-deserved Happy Father s Day. Page 4 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Participation in the Peter s Pence Collection gives us an opportunity be a witness of charity to our brothers and sisters around the world. Gifts to this annual collection help our Holy Father, Pope Francis, to support victims of war and natural disasters and others most in need of assistance. The Peter s Pence Collection unites us in solidarity with the Holy Father and his works of charity toward those who are suffering around the world. Pope Francis reminds us that true power lies not in amassing possessions and resources for ourselves but in giving. We must never forget that true power, at any level, is service, whose bright summit is upon the Cross... it means entering the logic of Jesus who kneels to wash the Apostles feet, he said. Your contributions to the Peter s Pence Collection join with the power of Christ to give support to those in need. Join Pope Francis and be a witness of charity throughout the world. You can participate through your donations, prayers, and outreach to spread the message of the love of Christ. Please be generous in the Peter s Pence Collection. ~Catechesis of the Good Shepherd~ After about a year of preparation - the birth of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd opened its doors at Holy Spirit Catholic Church last September. With great trepidation and unknowing on how the New Program would be met, we wondered Would the children come? We are pleased to announce it is a success! We had 20 children in our very first year. There is a boundless yearning for Catechism in our children starting at the age of 3. (This is a Montessori Program for children ages 3-5) We had so many people who enabled the program to get off the ground, there is not adequate room to thank them all. They prepared people, prayer cards, and prayer table cloths, cut out materials, made chasubles, help set up and take down the room each week and furnished the gift of their time. We celebrated our Liturgy of Light on April 9 th (our version of the Easter Vigil) and when the joy shined on each of the child s faces as they received their own light from our paschal candle, we knew we had done well and the Holy Spirit had accomplished his job. We let loose the Alleluia s that we had hid away and waited so long to say, and sang every song we knew. With that good news ~ we would like to tell you that we are accepting registrations for the 2015-2016 year. Our classes are from 4:00-5:30 on Thursday afternoons. We are limited to the number of children we can take, and parents of the kids we had this year remember if they are not 6 yet they can come back to the atrium! We are anxious to see them and our new children. So I look forward to a full house. We welcome all children 3-5 years of age!!! You can go to office and Kathy McGee will assist you with the registration of your child. If you have any questions I have an information booklet that I can send you via email. Remember sign up early as there is limited space. Teresa Chisholm Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Coordinator Holy Spirit Catholic Church chisholm.tm@cox.net Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: NEXT BLESSING: July 11/12 Volunteers needed to bake bread for our weekend Masses Baking unleavened bread for our Masses is a very important and rewarding ministry. We have lost several of our regular bakers and are in need of new volunteers. Training is provided and bakers are scheduled on a rotating basis.
