SUNDAY WORSHIP October 22, 2017 Ou r Mission: Gro wing in Sp irit Living as D isciple s Se rving God s World Preparation for Worship We thank you, O God for your love for us. Love that reaches out to accept us, wherever we are, whoever we are. Love that demands a lot, but at the same time, somehow, amazingly, enables us to meet those demands. Love that reassures, affirms, prompts, challenges and overwhelms us with the completeness of its response. Help us, your people, held within the security of your love, to risk showing that same love to others. May our love, too, be known for its abundance, its readiness to speak out, and its healing power. Amen. -Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa, New Zealand We Gather in God s Name Prelude Canzona Thiman Ray Freeman, Organist Welcome and Announcements Passing of the Peace Leader: The peace of the Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Praise Song Open Hands Praise Band Call to Worship One: Where there is despair and hopelessness, where there is sadness and grief, Many: Help us to bring the light of Christ. Please stand if you are able.

2 One: Where there is sickness and suffering, where there is hurt and hatred, hunger and emptiness, prejudice and cruelty, Many: Help us to bring the light of Christ. One: O Lord, so fill us with your love, your peace and your goodness that doubt and mistrust may be dispelled within us. Many: Grant that we might both see Christ s light and be Christ s light in a world of strife. Hymn The Earth Belongs to God Alone Prayer of Confession God of Love, you sent your son, Jesus among us as the light of the world, to reveal your love for all people. We confess that our sin and self-delusion dull the brightness of your light. We too often turn away from the poor, turning a blind eye to the need in our own back yard. We ignore cries for justice, or we just grow weary seeking it. We fail to strive for peace, and frankly, we put more hope in war. We fail to seek reconciliation, or healing. We do not keep our sights upon you. In your mercy, cleanse us of our sin so that, forgiven and renewed, we may show forth your love and live in ways that befit your name. In Christ s name we pray, Amen. Assurance of Forgiveness Leader: People: The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting unto everlasting. As far as the East is from the West, so far has God removed our transgression from us. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are all forgiven. Thanks be to God. We Proclaim God s Word Anthem Let All The People Say Amen Pepper Choplin Chancel Choir Children s Message Children ages 3 & 4 are invited to Play n Worship in Room 13. 5 Adult Discipleship Highlights: Conversations on Current Events Continues Tuesday. A dozen plus members gathered this week at a local restaurant (watering hole?) to discuss the changes pushing at the church and our faith today. We don t have all the answers, but conversation with others is a good place to start. The Grace community meets again on Tuesday, October 24, from 7:30-9 p.m. for a continuing dialogue. Contact Nelson Thurman (n.thurman4@verizon.net) no later than Monday so we can reserve space. Church Turned Upside Down: Exploring Acts. We conclude our exploration of The Changing Church and the spread of Christianity in the book of Acts in the Adult Discipleship Class. Today, October 22, our topic is A Dr. Who Fly-Through the First 1000 Years or so of Christianity. Dr. Who fans will understand this title; for others, come add an entry to your cultural glossary, and learn how the church depicted in Acts, laid the foundation for 1000 years and of course, for today. Join us in the Family Room 9:15 10:15 a.m. on Sunday. Coming Next in Adult Discipleship: Happy Birthday Protestants! Martin Luther took the big step 500 years ago, and the nature and direction of Christ s church has never been quite the same. Beginning Sunday, October 29, we will explore The Reformation for five weeks. Come join us in the Family Room, 9:15-10:15 a.m. Midweek Bible Study - On Wednesday, Oct. 25, the group turns to The Lord Reveals Himself at Sinai in Exodus 19-20 in its In Depth portion. See Greg Suess or Bob Bouchard. Advent Stories and Creations - Thanks to our Editors, Jim Drinkard, Sarah Shane, and Warren Clayton. Now, it s your turn.
