Liturgy At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church May 24, 2015 + 9:30 a.m. Day of Pentecost

Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. Prelude Three Pentecost Hymns + All glory be to God on high + Holy Spirit, ever dwelling + Come down, O love divine Michael Burkhardt (b. 1957) Ostinato, repeated continuously: ::: Gathering ::: The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the font at the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Procession to the Font Veni Sancte Spiritus Easter Proclamation Text: Pentecost sequence; Taize Community. Music [TAIZE VENI SANCTE]: Jacques Berthier (1923-1994) Text & Music 1981 Les Presses de Taize, GIA Publications Inc. Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed, Alleluia! Remembrance of Baptism Hymn O Living Breath of God During the hymn the assembly will be sprinkled with water from the baptismal font. As you receive the droplets you may make the sign of the cross in thanksgiving for the grace and mercy of our baptism into Jesus death and resurrection. [2]

The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen ~ be seated ~ ::: Word ::: The narrative of Pentecost exemplifies Luke's expert storytelling ability. The reading includes hidden references to the Hebrew Bible, a citation from the prophets, a contemporary geography lesson, an account of miracles, and the folksy detail of the accusation of drunkenness. As we await the eschatological end of all things, we are now those who prophesy, see visions, and dream dreams. Although some Christians connect glossolalia with Pentecost, Luke describes these "tongues" as other languages with which to evangelize the world. Greeting Prayer of the Day First Reading Acts 2:1-21 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [3]

Psalm 104 The refrain is sung by the choir and repeated by the assembly. The choir sings the verses. Refrain: Second Reading Romans 8:22-27 How many and wise the works of the Lord! The earth with its wealth of creatures is stored. The sea bears in safety the ships to and fro; Leviathan plays in the waters below. Refrain Your creatures all look to you for their food. Your hand opens wide, they gather the good. When you hide your face, Lord, in anguish they yearn; when you stop their breathing, to dust they return. Refrain Before the Lord s might earth trembles and quakes. The mountains are rent, and smoke from them breaks. I promise to worship the Lord all my days. Yes, while I have being, my God I will praise. Refrain We and the whole creation are groaning in labor, awaiting the birth of God's new age in which Christ's resurrection will renew all things. Until that end time, we have the Spirit who is praying for us before God. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Stanzas 1 & 2 before gospel; 3 5 following gospel. [4]

Gospel Acclamation Creator Spirit, Heavenly Dove The Gospel of John is appointed for most of the primary festivals of the liturgical year because of John's high Christology and its centrality in the development of Christian doctrine. John says theologically the narrative of Pentecost: God sends the Spirit into the gathered community so that they can know the truth of Christ's resurrection. Christian theology subsumed John's description of the Advocate into its understanding of the Holy Spirit, and passages such as this led to the development of the doctrine of the Trinity. The Spirit is now the link between the believing community and God. The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Creator Spirit stanzas 3 5 (above) ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. Gospel John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence [5]

Hymn of the Day O Spirit All- Embracing ~ please stand ~ Prayers of Intercession The assisting minister concludes each petition with the phrase, Come, Holy Spirit, and the assembly responds in any of these languages (or another you know) Ven espiritu Santo (Spanish) Komm heiliger Geist (German) Viens Esprit Saint (French) Come, Holy Spirit (English) [6]

The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ ::: Meal ::: If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for The Lakeview Pantry. Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Offering Offertory Hymn Fire of God, Undying Flame ~ please stand ~ [7]

Great Thanksgiving Preface and dialogue The thanksgiving includes the following: Holy, Holy Eucharistic Prayer Memorial Acclamation Amen [8]

The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Lamb of God Please remain standing. ~ be seated ~ [9]

Communion Communion Anthem Come, Holy Ghost, in love Leland B. Sateren (1913-2007) Silence Prayer Commission All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Come, Holy Ghost, in love, shed on us from above thine own bright ray; Divinely good thou art; thy sacred gifts impart to gladden each sad heart; O come today. Come, Light serene, and still our inmost bosoms fill; dwell in each breast; We know no dawn but thine; send forth thy beams divine, on our dark souls to shine, And make us blest. Come, all the faithful bless: let all, who Christ confess, his praise employ; Give virtue s rich reward; victorious death accord, and with our glorious Lord, eternal joy! O come to us. Amen. (Text based on Veni, Sancte Spiritus) ~ please stand ~ [10] ::: Sending ::: Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. For fifty days we have celebrated the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ over the powers of sin and death. We have proclaimed God s might acts and we have prayed that the power that was at work when God raised Jesus from the dead might be at work in us. I call upon you to live what you proclaim. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, will you dare to walk into God s future, trusting God to be your guide? By the Spirit s power, we will. Will you dare to embrace each other and grow together in love? We will. Will you dare to share your riches in common and minister to each other in need?

We will. Will you dare to pray for each other until your hearts beat with the longings of God? We will. Will you dare to carry the light of Christ into the world s dark places? We will. May the Spirit, who hovered over the waters when the world was created, breathe into you new life. Amen. May the Spirit, who overshadowed Mary when the eternal Son came among us, make you joyful in the service of the Lord. Amen. May the Spirit, who set the Church on fire upon the Day of Pentecost bring the world alive with the love of the risen Christ. Amen. And the blessing of the Holy Trinity, one God, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. #627 O Day Full of Grace stanzas 2 & 4 choir Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! Go forth in the power of the Spirit, to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God! Blessing Sending Hymn Sending Postlude O day full of grace Wayne L. Wold (b. 1954) Join us for social time and refreshments following worship. Take this opportunity to meet someone new in our ever-changing community. [11]
