You might be surprised! The Protestant Reformation, September 10, 2017 Ronald S. Cava, Senior Minister most closely associated with Martin Luther, began in 1517 but continues to impact the world today. It shows up in the ways we succeed or fail at ecumenical cooperation, how we mingle church-state relationships, the ways in which we interpret the Bible, and the extent to which our approaches to worship are shaped by Reformation ideas. We will emphasize five great themes of the Reformation in Worship October 8 November 5 and will ask, What do these have to teach us today? We will also have a series of weekly studies that will explore the historical contexts of the Reformers in more detail and contrast our own context and how we should deal with the ongoing need for reformation. We will explore questions such as, What is the relationship between faith and grace? What is a sacrament and how is life sacramental? Do I need the church in order to be a good Christian? How should we, as Protestants, relate to other denominations and particularly to Roman Catholic people? Our celebration of the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation will help us understand how we can continue to strengthen the church and be faithful to Christ in our day. Ronald S. Cava, Senior Minister

HURRICANE HARVEY RELIEF FUND Images of the destruction and suffering caused by Hurricane Harvey create a pain the size of Texas in our hearts. There are many channels available for charitable response, including the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship ( that is accepting gifts via its website. CBF has more than 100 partner churches in the city of Houston and surrounding communities. CBF will work with state and regional organizations, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD), as well as other local and national partners, including friends in the North American Baptist Fellowship, in any response. Please consider making a gift. If you choose to make a gift through FBC, please clearly mark any checks or envelopes for HARVEY. All offerings received through FBC will be forwarded to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship s relief fund. GROUPS Sunday Evenings Beginning September 17th at 6:00pm
Deacon Nomination/Election September 10 and 17, 11:00AM DEACON SELECTION PROCEDURE (from FBCH Constitution) Item 1. The Diaconate shall consist of twenty-four members who have proven themselves to have scriptural qualifications, and who commit themselves to fulfilling the purposes of deaconship as described below. All Deacons shall be at least twenty-one years of age or older and a member of First Baptist for at least two years. Deacons shall be elected for a term of four years, with six being elected each year. After the completion of a four-year term, no deacon shall be eligible for re-election until the lapse of one year. The deacons shall annually elect their own chairman. The following procedure will be followed in the election of deacons. On September 10, in business session during the hour of the worship service, the membership present at the service will be given a ballot form. The ballot form will show the names of the twenty-four present members of the Diaconate. These individuals are not eligible for nomination because of their present membership on the Diaconate or because of operation of the rotation plan. The ballot will provide space for the members to write in the names of six members of the church who they believe should be elected to the Diaconate. Those twelve names appearing most will be contacted, given the scriptural and practical duties of the office, and given an opportunity to accept or reject nomination. The twelve members whose names appear the greatest number of times on the ballots will be named in alphabetical order on a second ballot, which will be presented to the membership of the church at the morning worship hour on Sunday, September 17. Each member will mark the ballot opposite the name of not more than six of the twelve members the church has nominated. The six members receiving the greatest number of votes on the ballot are elected. The following twenty-four persons are ineligible for nomination/election due to their present service as deacons: Nancy Bobbitt, Ruxton Bobbitt, Jr., Betty Boyd, Bob Catherwood, Roy De Brand, Allen Duke, Mark Edwards, Jerry Ellington, Julia Falkner, Jeff Finch, Jim Goodwin, David Hicks, Bert Long, Connie Markham, Thurman Murphy, Jeff Perry, Betsy Rublein, John Strickland, Linda Weaver, Susan Westbrook, Buddy Wester, Chocky White, Frank Wiggins, and Sue Young. ABSENTEE BALLOTS If a member is unable to attend the Worship service on September 10, he or she may complete an absentee ballot located in the Church Office through Friday, September 8 during office hours only: Monday-Thursday, 9am-5:30pm and Friday, 9am-Noon.
Because of your continued support of this much-needed outreach, members of Greater Zion, Shiloh Baptist, and First Baptist Partnership passed out around 160 bags of school supplies and greeted families at L. B. Yancey School on Thursday, August 24th. Extra school supplies were given to the guidance counselor for further distribution. Additional items are available to deliver to Clarke Elementary School.
I Wonder What is a Godly Play Training? Godly Play is an opportunity for children to explore their faith through story, gain religious language, and enhance their spiritual experience through wonder and play. The statement I wonder is used at the close of each story to invite children to think about a favorite part or to wonder where they see themselves in the story. Everyone has the freedom to be creative, to be themselves, and to be with God. On August 24-26, First Baptist served as host to people seeking to learn more about Godly Play. The two-and-a-half-day training session offered class instructions, study sessions, and story presentations. Upon completion, each attendee received certification as a Godly Play Storyteller. The class was full with 14 attendees. They came from all over: Miami, Virginia Beach, Wytheville, and areas in between. Our very own Clara Bobbitt attended as well! God was in this place, and many described the weekend as a spiritual retreat. I would like to extend a very special thank you to all who helped to make this weekend possible. Because of you it was a wonderfilled weekend! Tammy Hight, Director of Childhood Discipleship
From the Participants A warm thanks to Tammy, her assistants and the people of First Baptist Henderson for opening your doors, hearts, and arms to the participants of the Godly Play certification that took place recently. Our every need was taken care of during that weekend. The gift bags were full of helpful items, the lunches enabled us all to nourish bodies and minds, but thank you most of all for inviting us into your home and into your Godly Play room. It was so meaningful to use the lovely materials that you have there. May we that hear the Good Shepherd s voice, continue to seek and follow Him. Robin Coble I traveled a long way to attend this particular Godly Play training. I am so glad I did. Right from the start I felt very welcome/included. My fellow participants were truly dedicated to getting the most out of the training. Our instructor J.D. is exactly what you want a teacher to be...warm, patient and knowledgeable, and fun! Finally, the folks from First Baptist were incredible hosts. They engaged us in conversation, devotion and food!! I left, very energized to take my training experiences back to Miami and get my Godly Play group up and running. Celia Fitts
