1 Trinity Lutheran Church Trinity News October 2018 Office: Web Page: trinitybenson.org Pastor: Art Wiese Secretary: Pam Anderson Council President Byron Giese Custodians: Rosy Petersen Mission Statement Trinity Lutheran Church is a caring congregation committed to providing a place of worship to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We acknowledge the authority of Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions. Growing in Christ as a community of believers, we share with all people the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord. Hebrews 6:7 Dear People of Trinity, Last month I wrote to you about the generous gift we have received from the estate of Clarence Lageson. This month I d like to write about another activity some of us have been working on regarding generosity. It s called Cultivating Generous Congregations. We were invited to get involved with it by the SWMN Synod because of our location near Alexandria, MN, where the training workshops are taking place. It s an ecumenical program involving ELCA, Roman Catholic and Reformed Church in the USA congregations. Our first training was in August. The second was this past weekend and a third will happen in November. In between, we had a video conference meeting with our coach who lives in Pennsylvania. One of the words in the title of the program, which I would like to focus on is cultivating. This is a farming term familiar to most of us. Though it isn t practiced with the rigor it used to be, cultivating fields is still important, at least as it applies to congregations. The first reason for cultivating is to remove weeds. Jesus said that weeds were bound to happen, especially in the kingdom of God (see Matthew 13). Of course, weeds in a grain field are more difficult to deal with than weeds in the corn or the beans. Jesus said to leave them until the time of harvest, lest the grain be pulled out along with the weeds in the process of cultivating. A second reason for cultivating, according to our trainers, is to put oxygen into the soil. I remember my uncle telling me that he liked to get the corn cultivated at least once because it loosened the soil, so that the moisture of the rain could get into it better. Either way, I always thought it looked better after I was done digging through the rows. The trainers suggest that cultivating is necessary in the church as well. Things do not happen automatically. We have to be intentional about teaching the principles of Christian discipleship, so that we can all become better disciples. Whether that means pulling out a few things that get in the way, mixing in a little oxygen or loosening the soil to make it more receptive, we need to work at it. It doesn t just come naturally. And one of the ways we do that is through a lot of talking. We need to have conversation, share opinions and reflect on our experiences. It s something we all need to do together. Continued page 7
