3 Dear Friends, Haggai 1:3-8 says, This is what the LORD Almighty says: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the LORD s house. Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai, Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin? Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it. This is what the LORD Almighty says: Give careful thought to your ways. Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored, says the LORD. ( The Story, New International Version, Zondervan, 2011). Our small Bible study group reading The Story has reached the place where the people of Jerusalem had finished their exile and had been allowed to return to Jerusalem with the expressed intent to rebuild the temple. While rebuilding, the workers had grown weary and had been distracted by outside influences. God sent the prophet Haggai to empower their labor through the reclaiming of the priority of the purpose of their return. On Pentecost we began the celebration of This is My Church. We choose to THRIVE, rather than just survive. As we move forward to putting the dreams of the Spirit into actual action, we remind ourselves that Christ is the foundation of the Church. F in the Book of Order (our constitution) states: In Christ all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell and through Christ God reconciles all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of the cross (Col 1: 19-20). In Christ s name, therefore, the Church is sent out to bear witness to the good news of reconciliation with God, with others, and with all creation. In Christ the Church receives its truth and appeal, its holiness, and its unity. 3

4 The Holy Spirit empowers us to proclaim this good news. Every step of our ministry is to bear witness to this good news. With your intelligence, imagination, energy, and love, we begin our summer journey. We will explore how the early church message was given as an example God has chosen as His holy instruction for our consideration. We will find the unique way God is calling us to make disciples. It is our on-going Pentecost experience that renews the building process of being Christ s faithful evangelist: F making disciples of all nations in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; sharing with others a deep life of worship, prayer, fellowship, and service; and participating in God s mission to care for the needs of the sick, poor, and lonely to free people from sin, suffering, and oppression; and to establish Christ s just, loving, and peaceable rule in the world. Let s show the priority of witness and THRIVE. Sincerely in Christ, Pastor Jan 4

5 To: Venice Presbyterian Church From: VPC Women s Group This is in regards to the Women s mission project, Community Meals Center. Because of the difficulty to get volunteers from our church to work at the CMC, we are ending this service project to serve meals every other month. We will consider future monetary donations to CMC...it is a worthwhile outreach and deserves our support. Lauren Marsh has been notified that we have concluded our service as of April 29. If anyone from VPC still wants to volunteer on their own on any given Friday night...that option is always open. I would like to thank Sharon Thompson for her devotion and leadership of this project since we started 11 years ago. Sharon very much appreciates the church volunteers who have prepared and served meals and donated desserts at the Meals Center over the years. This has been a rewarding mission and one that was valued by Lauren Marsh and the people we served. Melanie Hanson, Women s Group President 5

9 2016 Per Capita Apportionment The 2016 Per Capita Apportionment kicked off on May 22. So far we have collected $864. Per Capita Apportionment is an annual expense that all Presbyterian churches pay to the Presbytery, the Synod, and the General Assembly for the members. This year, the per capita apportionment is $30.00 for each member on the membership roll of our church. For our membership of 124 members, we owe the Presbytery a total of $3,720. If you are able to pay your portion of $30.00 towards the Apportionment expense for you and any of your family, please add your apportionment funds in the envelope provided in the Sunday bulletin, and place the envelope in the offering plate. 11 THRIVE AT VPC The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body whether Jews or Greek, slave or free and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 1 Corinthians 12: As the gift of the Holy Spirit caused the disciples to become afire with the message and building up of the Church, we come together to celebrate and explore where we can thrive, not just survive. Each person within the body at Venice is a precious part of God s calling and purpose. Join us as we proclaim: This is God s Church. Because of God s grace I can say This is my Church. It is composed of people just like me. We make it what it is. It will be friendly if I am friendly. The pews will be filled if I help fill them. It will do great work if I labor with God s help to accomplish His tasks here. It will make good gifts to great causes if I give as God wants me to give. It will be a church of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a church of a noble spirit, if I who help to make it what it is, am filled with these things. Therefore, by faith in Christ who calls me into His service, I dedicate myself to all the things God wants the Church to be. Then truly, I can say that this is my Church, Christ s Church, the Church that I love. Amen. 11

12 Come and hear our music We at Venice have been blessed with some of the best musical talent in the state. When James Dillaman finds the time between being the Youth Director and attending college to earn his ministry degree, he moves us with talent honed by years of being a professional musician. For years we had the pleasure of listening to Kirsten Homdrom, a superb talent that moved to North Carolina on earning her Doctorate in Music. Now we have the joy of hearing Kwi-im Kim, who is also working on her Doctorate Degree in Music at the University of Cincinnati. Kwi-im grew up in Seoul, South Korea and came to Cincinnati in 2006 to pursue her Musical Degree at UC. She went back home for a while and returned to the States in 2013 to pursue a Doctorate Degree. She started her interest in music at a young age of 4, when she just did not see the same joy at having a baby brother that her parents did. Her mom got her into daycare to find new hobbies and they had a piano at the school. That is where it all began. Kwi-im plays with a natural skill and occasionally lights things up with a little boogie woogie Please stop by and say hi to her. Dave Toler Personnel Chairman VPC 12

For all the calls, cards, prayers and words of comfort and understanding after Doug s passing. My sister Carolyn, Doug s mother, says Doug felt cared for and loved. Remember to enjoy every moment you have. Love to you all, Candy & Rick Weppler 17

18 My Dad had many words of wisdom and I have to say I heard a lot of sermons throughout my life, but my favorite one was You can t do wrong by doing what is right! Shared by: Gayla Young *It is incumbent upon us to give back to our Community and our Country. *To whom much is given, much is expected. *Reach for the stars. Shared by: Lee Steenken 18

19 My dad was a proponent of the right approach : think carefully about the best way to say or do something that will bring about the desired result without hurt feelings or negative consequences. He also strongly believed in caring and providing for his family. Finally, he always told us to save money and stay out of debt! Shared by: Sue Pigg Advice to my kids: If you sit in the house and wait for someone to knock at the door with an opportunity, you could be waiting for a long time. Make your own opportunities by getting out and trying to do something. Shared by: Dale Hanson *It takes all kinds to make the world go round. *You can t please all of the people all of the time. *Teach your children to be Independent. Don t rely on anyone but yourself. Shared by: Debbie Schwab An interview with Arnold Palmer, one of the best golfers in the world at the time: Arnold was asked to what he attributed his good luck to being a success in golf? Arnold s response was, It seems like the more I practice, the luckier I get Apply that lesson to what you do in life. Shared by: Dale Hanson 19
