The economc clmate, publc pressure Republcan threats to dscharge the Governor's work comp reform legslaton from the Senate Labor Commttee, we beleve, created the atmosphere needed for Democrats to fnally move on workers' compensaton legslaton. However, the reforms adopted by the Senate do not go far enough. Republcans wanted a much stronger defnton of dsablty tghter language n other facets of the legslaton. Republcans n the Senate worked trelessly to get as good a package as we could. We only hope that workers' compensaton reform legslaton wll be strengthened n the House n Conference Commttee. "Ths makes mc f eel as mportant as a congressman." 1 whspered. Members of Congress are Very mportant People, more commonly known as VPs. So are dplomats U.S. Supreme Court justces. 1 was remnded of ths anew recently when 1 read about the smply ghastly tme Rep. Wllam Broomfeld has fndng a place to park free at Natonal Arport n Washngton. Broomfeld. a Republcan, s from Brmngham, the Detrot suburb that, for ts brave successful defense aganst the nvason of low-ncome housng, has become as famous as the Berln Wall. Of course, most Brmngham resdents aren't prejudced aganst houses wth low ncomes but. after all. once such a house s bult, the next thng you know, someone wants 10 lve n t. Anyway. Broomfeld s currently representng hs consttucms by fghtng dplomats for free parkng spaces n the VP lot a Natonal Arport. You mght thnk most of the congressman's consttuents don't gve a damn f he has to pay to park, lke an ordnary human beng. Your problem s that you're an ordnary human beng. Bnxmfcld's problem s that there are only 110 spaces n the arport lot reserved for 535 members of Congress, nne Supreme Court justces more than 3.4O0 people who drve cars wth dplomatc lcense plates. These VPs are forever flyng somewhere to be very mportant, so there are many days when all 110 spaces arc taken before Rep. Broomfeld arrves. Ths forces hm to compete wth unmportant people for pad parkng space n publc lots. Naturally, ths makes hm angry. Broomfeld blames the dplomats, so he has ntroduced legslaton lmtng each foregn embassy to'two dplomatc lcense plates. Ths has upset our State Department whch fears that other governments mght retalate aganst Amercan dplomats who enjoy smlar parkng prvleges abroad. Currently, some of ths naton s top brans are tryng to work out a compromse. The hearts of most U.S. ctzens are warmed at ths evdence of ther lax dollars at work on a project crucal to the welfare of our country. Members of the meda are occasonally allowed to park close free, to help them n ther never-endng battle to protect the freedom of the pres«to freeload. so 1 can apprecate the mportance of Rep. Broomfeld's crusade. But some people thnk otherwse. Some people don't underst what t s about Washngton VPs that qualfes them to receve better treatment than that gven to everybody else who use such publc convenences as arports. s a congressman's work, hs need to travel swftly cheaply, really more mportant than that of a rbbon clerk? The rbbon clerks say no. n fact, they say the naton would be belter off. Washngton more responsve to the common man's needs, f VPs were forced to experence the parkng hassle that regularly causes the common man to njure hs back permanently whle carryng luggage fve mle* from the arport to a car whose trade-n value s less than the parkng fee. Rbbons clerks are unreasonable, of course. Most patrotc people realze l kep. Broomfeld had to pay to park, walk to move, he would be too poor too tred to be rch famous, whch s a requste for beng a VP. And f there were no VPs n Washngton, there would be no one to eat off Mrs. Reagan's S chna, one of ths naton's most valuable resources would be wasted. Oh yes. My wfe 1 were n a mult-screened theater when we followed the unformed man's nstructons fo "rch famous people" to move forward. We were wallng to see a move called "Rch Famous." When hed the usher our tckets. 1 told hm was a congressman ordered hm to go out to the parkng lot rotate mv tres. MULTPLY B Y ' 5 ' To convert teaspoons to mlllters, multply by fve.
