Also, my appreciation goes out to our Ladies Auxiliary for their continuous support in all our activities. I am looking forward to serving as your Grand Knight as we start the new fraternal year. I appreciate and thank all the Brothers for taking on an Officers or Directors position for the upcoming fraternal year. I am looking forward to working with each one of you. Also to our 1 st Degree team, I thank you for your commitment and time that was provided ensuring our council and area councils brought in new members. As the saying goes KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS IN SERVICE TO ONE, IN SERVICE TO ALL. A special thanks to our Field Agent, Matt Seltzer, for serving as our Chancellor on the team. We could always count on his support. The council should be very proud of their accomplishments this year in supporting numerous charities, Holy Cross Catholic School, providing high school scholarships and supporting our seminarians. Without your time, talent and commitment, this would not have been possible. 2 COMMUNITY/COUNCIL/MEMBERSHIP Memorial Day Celebration May29th: What we now know as Memorial Day (4 th Monday in May) originally started as Decoration Day after the Civil War. Families would place flowers on the graves of soldiers who had been killed in the Civil War. Memorial Day became an official holiday in 1968 when Congress passed a law declaring the 4 th Monday in May as Memorial Day. Here in Las Cruces, we observe Memorial Day starting with an 8:00AM flag raising at Veteran s Park. The flag is first raised to full staff and then lowered to half staff. At 12:00 Noon the flag is raised back to full staff. At 8:00AM at Picacho Bridge the VFW Ladies Auxiliary conducts a wreath laying ceremony by tossing a wreath into the Rio Grande River (when there is water in the river). At 9:00AM there is a flag placing ceremony at Hillcrest Cemetery on Picacho. The flag is lowered at 5:00PM by veterans and volunteers. A candle light vigil is conducted at Veteran s Park for members killed during our country s wars. Veterans and community members place candles on top of the wall which creates a peaceful, serene setting to finish our observance of Memorial Day. 3 COMMUNITY/FAMILY/CHURCH Celebration of the 100 th Birthday of Mrs. Emma Aguilar on June 17th: Mrs. Emma Jaramillo Aguilar is the mother of Ladies Cecilia Flores and Jane Madrid, and the motherin-law of Grand Knight Jaime Flores. She has been an active member of St. Genevieve Parish for many decades. She celebrated her 100 th Birthday this year. Her Birthday Party was held on June 17, and the Elk s Hall was packed with relatives and friends who came to honor her. Our Grand Knight Jaime Flores and Good friends, Lady Rebecca, and Our Financial Secretary Jaime Rivera Emma s daughter, Lady Cecilia Flores District Deputy Richard Archuleta and Lady Delia Narvaez enjoyed the food FAMILY/COMMUNTY/LIFE Family Unity Night Wednesday June 21st: The highlight of this month s Family Unity Night potluck dinner was the presence of our newest Brother, Bishop Joseph Mukala, who had been initiated into our Brotherhood the previous night. He led us in prayer before the meal, and joined us for a peaceful time of socializing and breaking bread together. At the end of the evening, Grand Knight Jaime Flores appointed Ladies Sylvia Corona and Karen Frye to serve on the Scholarship Selection Committee on Tuesday June 27 th. If you have not attended a Family Unity Night pot luck dinner, please give it a try. You will find a group of friendly, outgoing Knights, Ladies and Friends. You will have a wonderful time, especially if you like to socialize, talk, and eat. Family Unity Night is held every third Wednesday of the month at the St. Genevieve Parish Hall from 6:30 until about 8:00PM. 4 MEMBERSHIP/COUNCIL/COMMUNITY - Admission Degree Exemplification June 20th: This is the time of the fraternal year that councils are working hard to achieve their annual membership goals. Last month, we had 5 new candidates and this month we initiated 13. A highlight of our June 20 th Exemplification was the initiation of our new Brother, Bishop Joseph Mukala. In addition to our regular Third-Tuesday-of-the-Month Exemplification on June 20 th, we hosted a special ceremony at St. Genevieve Hall on Tuesday June 27 th, at which we brought even more new Knights into our Brotherhood. Our GK has encouraged our First Degree Team to make them selves available, at any time, to any council that has candidates who have been approved for initiation. COUNCIL/CHURCH Memorial Mass on June 17th Commemorating the Death of Deacon and Brother Arthur Reade Narvaez, Sr.: Our Brother, Retired Deacon Arthur Narvaez, Sr, passed away on May 11 th in Texas, surrounded by his children. Many of us who loved and admired him were honored to have Bishop Oscar Cantu, S.T.D. celebrate his farewell Mass at St. Genevieve Church. Inurnment of Cremains followed in St. Genevieve Columbarium, with military honors accorded by a NM National Guard Honor Guard and the Marine Corps League El Perro Diablo Detachment. Arthur s memory lives in our Parish. Brother Arturo Narvaez always had a big Bro Arturo, with PGK Jesus Frietze, at Deacon Arturo Narvaez during the 1980 s smile when he attended our activities his initiation in July of 2015 was one of the first permanent deacons The K of C 4 th Degree Honor Guard Bros Al Lopez, Jaime Rivera, Jaime Flores Many of Arturo s friends and relatives was present at the Memorial Mass and Eloy Martinez pay their respects leaving the Church after the ceremony 4

Once again, our council was called upon by the LC Diocese Youth Director, Bro Alex Barraza, to support this year s Youth Rally. Brothers Jaime Flores, Gilbert Perez, and Robert Ponzini attended planning meetings. Our council made a monetary contribution of $500 from our Mega Bingo proceeds. And, for the 2 nd year in a row, we successfully transported the out of town speakers to and from the El Paso airport. Special kudos to our Drivers Jaime Flores, John Frye, Dave Kenny, & Bob Ponzini. In June, Brothers Al Lopez and Jaime Flores gave our check for $450 to the Safe Haven Animal Shelter. 7 CHURCH/COMMUNITY/COUNCIL New Members of the Sacred Heart League: The Sacred Heart League is one of the oldest ministries in St. Genevieve Parish. Its mission is to practice and spread the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The League recently accepted three new members who are well known to our Council and Ladies Auxiliary. The new members are Rebecca Archuleta, Veronica Garcia, and Delia Narvaez. Fr. Rogelio, with new members Veronica Garcia, Delia Narvaez, and Rebecca Archuleta CULTURE OF LIFE Report of Culture of Life Director Harold Beeson: Pro-Life Couple Margie & Harold Beeson Recent activities have included The Turning Point Abortion Counseling Annual Fund Raiser is held in June. Baby bottles were passed out at St. Genevieve Masses and parishioners took them home and filled them with contributions. Turning Point s mission is to provide a Christian alternative to abortion. In June, we delivered a check for $450 from our New Mexico Knights of Columbus State Raffle to the Mesilla Valley Hospice. This is an example when our treasure is donated to provide quality of life to the elderly of our community. Remember Our Council makes an annual contribution of $300 to the NM State Ultra Sound Project. In Las Cruces, the partner of the Knights of Columbus in this project is Turning Point.
