April 13, 1914 at Groton, Vermont. He married Evalona (or pos. Emilene) dau. of the Hon. Johnathan R. Darling of Groton, VT on June 25, Seth Eastman was a student at Newbury Seminary, but in 1861 at the age of 17, responded to his country's call and enlisted in Co. B, 6th Regt. Vt. Vol., Col. Nathan Lord. Seth Was a great strapping, farm-bred boy, could march all day on antediluvian hard tack, and awake refreshed after a good night's sleep in a mud puddle. He was badly wounded in the leg at Savage Station, June 29, 1862, laid all night beside the road, and the next day witnessed the advance of Lee' s army along the turnpike, and a portion of the battle of Malvern Hills. He laid three days on the battle field, before be was picked up by the Johnnies and sent to Richmond on a freight car. The wound was never dressed by a surgeon, and he still carries rebel lead in his leg. He was sent first to Libbey prison, and then to Belle Isle, where after three months he was paroled. The provisions were barely sufficient to sustain life and consisted for the most part of corn bread and river water, and occasionally a liquid compound flavored with worms, called bean soup. In three months be was reduced from 150 pounds to a walking skeleton of 90 pounds of skin and bones. When paroled he was bare headed and bare foot and wore nothing but a tattered shirt and trowsers. Fortunately at Alexandria he met a squad of Topsham men, going to the front and they supplied him with clothing and perhaps saved his life. He rejoined his regiment at Hagerstown, Md., in September, 1862, and was exchanged six months later. He was with the old Sixth during the last grand advance on Richmond, including the red deluge of Spottsylvania bloody angle, and the Wilderness. At Spottsylvania his company came out of the battle with 13 muskets, Co. F with 4, and the regiment with 94. In 1866 be commenced reading medicine with Dr. Geo. K. Bayley and continued two years, after which be spent a year in the office of Dr. G. H. Plumley of Montpelier, graduating in January, According to another source, ".... he graduated from the Pennsylvania Medical School, Jan 9, 1869, and practiced medicine according to that school for fourteen years, and being dissatisfied with that system, he took the degree from Dartmouth, from which he graduated in the class of 1884". He located in Groton soon after [1869,] and remained [there] in practice. During his experience of 26 years he notes a more careful observance of sanitary laws, and consequently fewer cases of typhoid and diphtheria, and that diseases peculiar to children are less frequent and fatal than formerly. Nov. 27, 1907 Morris Henry Tuttle in W. Groton Mass. Buelahs' parents separated while she was growing up. At the time she was graduating from Bethlehem high school she was living with her father in Bethlehem NH. At this time her older sister, Alice, was either living with their mother or out on her own. Buelah's valedictory speech for the class of 1899 was on "Burden Bearing". Her graduating class was only about 5 people. She apparently kept house for her father. There is the story about the blueberry pie that she made once. She used dried blueberries or something like that and after it was baked the pie rattled. She took the pie to a neighbor for help. The neighbor showed her how to cut it open, moisten the berries, and reseal the pie. Her father, Charles, died while she was living with him. Beulah reportedtly found him slumped over the wood pile in the kitchen one morning. Buelah Mae Eastman Home Genealogy Page History of Hancock Table of Contents

8 Deacon Foster's Pew 1 of 3 1/20/2010 9:08 PM Deacon Foster's Pew I sit here thinking, Will, of you and many days gone by. The old church where so oft we sang together you & I. But thoughts of one rehearsal night will constantly arise. Till I can read my tithe clear to mansions in the skies 2d I'm thinking of that rainy night the rest had hurried home. And we in Dea. Fosters' pew were sitting all alone. You were a seeker then dear Will but not of things above. The length, bredth, hight & debth of everlasting love. 3d I was on the anxious seat uncertain how to move. Within thine arms of love enclosed thy constancy to prove. And Oh, the promises you made you my own dear Will. What peaceful hours I once enjoyed how sweet the memory still 4th Oh what sweet words of love you spoke and kissed away the tears And how I trembled at the thought lest someone should appear. But when you you turned the lights all out to guard against surprise I bid farewell to every fear and wiped my weeping eyes. 5th And when you fixed the cushions up and I reclined at ease

9 Deacon Foster's Pew 2 of 3 1/20/2010 9:08 PM The pulpit pillow 'neath my head and you on bended knees. With your warm kisses on my lips how could I stay your hand The veil was lifted and by faith you viewed the promised land. 6th Oh. what rapture feelings thrilled through my veins I cried, Oh Lord, my heart is touched you shouted out Amen. My very soul was all ablaze I thought that I could see The land of rest, the souls' delight The Heaven prepared for me. 7th I thought a charge I had to keep with fear and shame How anxiously I waited Will, till I come 'round again. In my distress I vainly strove to check the falling tears. The precious blood gushed freely fourth and concured all my fears 8th But that was many years ago and I've no doubt that you Remember still that rainy night in Deacon Foster's pew. But Oh my first experience will near forgotten be Till I shall read my tithe clear to mansions in the skies Alice

11 Poetry 1 of 2 1/20/2010 9:08 PM Poetry (or at least.. rhymning verse) Does anybody remember Capt. Jack Crawford? He billed himself as The Poet Scout. He was, I believe, a sidekick to Wild Bill Hicock. In the days before movies and TV he must have enthralled audiences with his tales of the Wild West. I know that he is not entirely forgotten to history as he penned a poem about the death of Wild Bill Hicock. Aces & Eights, the Dead mans' Hand and all that. He apparently almost missed a train and was grateful for my grandfather's help in catching it. This incident apparently introduced them and today there remains a few letters which testify to a certain amount of corespondence between them. This "friendship" between them was, I'm sure, a source of pride to my grandfather. Capt. Jack gave my grandfather an autographed picture of himself (shown here), I'm sure he had an abundant supply, with a poem about their meeting in the train station penned on the back of it. I've titled this poem "The Flyer" My grandfather spent many watchful nights in the Boston & Albany Railroads Tower #18. I found this poem he wrote about one of those nights and have titled it The Towerman's Dream Flight Dreams Many of us had dreams that we could fly, and sometimes, in the right spot and on the right day, we almost believe that we can do it! I wrote the poem, Flight Dreams to express that feeling of wanting to do the impossible. Deacon Foster's Pew My grandmother's sister, Alice, wrote a poem about a rainy night in the church. I found it in an unposted envelope bearing the date April 1st Much has changed in a hundred years. But some things never do. I only knew my mother's Aunt Alice as an old woman in a nursing home many years ago. The paper this poem was written on was crumbling with age. As I read her poem, a hundred years disappeared and a most personal passionate right of passage at the end of her girlhood emerged. Alice titled her poem, Deacon Foster's Pew.
