Richard Card of Newport, Rhode Island This chapter is extracted from Grayce (Harper) Alsterad's 1978 work, William Card with Ancestors and Descendants. 1. RICHARD 1 CARD was born in England in 1618 and died at Newport, Rhode Island before 1 July 167. He married REBECCA who married second on 1 November 169 George Hassall of Newport and Westerly, Rhode Island. Richard Card probably came from the southwest of England, perhaps Devonshire or Dorsetshire. He was one of the original grantees of Conanicut Island (Jamestown, Rhode Island) in 165. He served as a juryman at Newport on 9 August 1653 (TAG, No. 79, Vol. XX, No. 3, January 19) and again in Richard was made a freeman at Newport in 1665 (Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families). JANE STANFORD, b. ca. 1653, d. before 19 June 1717, dau. of Samuel and Sarah (Wodell) Stanford of Boston, MA and Portsmouth, RI (Kris Card, correspondence 7 April 1998).. ii. JAMES, b. about 1650; m. (1) RUTH HAVENS; m. () MARTHA WEST. iii. JOB, b. about 1653; d. Charlestown, RI before Sep 1739; m. (1) Westerly, RI Nov 1689 MARTHA ACRES, dau. of John Acres; m. () MARGERY (ACRES) TOSH, dau. of John Acres; m. (3) 7 Aug 17 HANNAH BULL.. JAMES CARD (Richard 1 ) was born about 1650 and died in Kingston, Rhode Island no later than He married first before March 1680 RUTH HAVENS (William 1 ), born about 1658 and died about 1703, daughter of William 1 and Dennis (Allen) de Havens. James married second March 1703 MARTHA WEST, married second Jeremiah Fones. James was a Freeman in In 1680, he was taxed 5s at Newport. On 8 May 1701, when of Kingston, he sold land in Newport to Joseph Card.

He married first before 31 April 1709 REBECCA DOLOVER (Joseph 1 ). She died before 3 November 177, the daughter of Joseph 1 and Rachel ( ) Dolover. Peleg married second between 7 November 175 and 3 November 177 ELIZABETH (AYLESWORTH) DOLOVER, daughter of Arthur and Mary (Brown) Aylesworth and probably the widow of his brother-in-law, Joseph Dolover Jr. (Joseph 1 ). Children, by Rebecca Dolover, probably all born at North Kingston, Rhode Island: i. JOSEPH, b. about 1709; d. before 176; m. 6 March 1736 or 1737 JUDITH CAHOONE.. ii. WILLIAM, b. about 1710; m. WILLIAM CARD (Peleg 3, James, Richard 1 ) was born at North Kingston, Rhode Island about 1710 and died at Pownal, Bennington County, Vermont between 15 June 178 and April He was married at East Greenwich, Rhode Island on 13 June 1733 to MERCY BRIGGS (Daniel 3, Thomas, Clement 1 ), the daughter of Daniel 3 and Lydia ( ) Briggs. From Volume I of Bennington's Probate Records, we have William Card's will of 15 June 178. William's will was witnessed by Joseph Williams, Joseph Card, and William Williams. The will was probated at the dwelling of Jonathan Card on April 1785.
3 RICHARD CARD OF NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND 3 In the name of God Amen I William Card of Pownall being in purfut health of body and and in Perfut mind and memory thanks be given unto God Calling unto mind the Mortallity of my body that is appointed for all men one to Die to make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament that is to say Principally. And first of all I give and Recommend my Soul into the hand of the Almighty God, that gave it and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in Decant and Christian Buriel at the Discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the Resurrection I shall Revive the same agin, by the Mighty Power of God, and touching such worldly Estate whirewith it has Pleased God to blefs me with in this life I give divise and dispose of the same in the following maner and form First. I give and bequeath to Mercy my Dearly And well beloved Wife one third part of all my Personal and Real Estate During her Life. - - Secondly. I give to my well beloved Son Jonathan Card the sum of Ten shillings. - Thirdly. I give to my well beloved son Jobe Card the sum of five shillings. - Fourthly. I give to my well beloved Son Elisha Card the sum of five shillings. - Fifthly. I give to my well beloved son Daniel Card one Cow and six sheep. - Sixly. I give to my well beloved son Stephen Card one Cow. - Seventhly. I give to my well beloved son Benjamin Card my homested Farm with all the buildings thereon together with one Yoak of oxen and all my Farming and one Route Table. - Eight.
