We had the state workday at the USO on Fort Meade. For all those that attended, I am so proud of the job you did there in making many of the childrens days. I heard many great things like that from the parents and it makes me proud that you all are representing Maryland so well. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Who would have thought we d have snow so with our turkey this year!! Thanks go to everyone who took part in the State Workdays at Fort Meade and at the DAR Chapter House. Both events were very successful because of all of your hard work and support. I hope you all plan to attend the December State Board meeting and Holiday Party which are scheduled for Sunday, December 14, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the DAR Chapter House, Baltimore, Maryland. This meeting is always a lot of fun with Santa making a very special appearance. Following the State Board meeting, members will participate in making holiday themed crafts provided by each society while enjoying some holiday snacks and good C.A.R. company. We also recently had the Leaf Raking at the Chapter House. I am sorry that I was unable to attend, but after talking to Ms. Atherton, it seems as though you all did a great job! 7 Kudos to Members and Seniors Kudos to Members Dimitrios Christou, Chairman of Maryland State Patriots and Contributors, graduated Valedictorian from W. E. B. Du Bois High School and received a full scholarship to college. The College Bound Foundation and Mars Super Markets picked him as a Scholar of the Week that had him appear on TV in their biographical segments several times. Lauren Jenne, State Chaplain, was in the production of "Bye Bye Birdie" at the Westminster Arts Center in November. She was a Sweet Apple Teen. Sarah Jenne, Terra Rubra President, was the September 2014 student of the month. She was nominated by the Family and Consumer Sciences Faculty of Westminster High School Spencer Paire, Hungerford Resolves President, recently placed fourth on the state level of National History Day in the Senior Group Documentary division and scored above 2100 on the SAT and made the Dean's list Kudos to Seniors Christos Christou, Sr. Chairman, had a significant role as the 60 th President of the War of 1812 Society, in the 1812 Bicentennial Spectacular at Baltimore including Fort McHenry and North Point Battlefield including a dedication of the new 24-lb cannon at Fort McHenry that the War of 1812 Soc. bought to fire during the celebrations and dedication of a new marker regarding the society s founding history. Maryland Theme: "Taking Flight with Maryland C.A.R." Christopher Smithson, Bush Declaration Sr. President, recently had his name listed in several prestigious psychological journals for his help in uncovering the almost 100-year mystery of who a famous pseudonym "Little Albert" aka Albert B" really was. The boy s real name was thought to be Doug Merritte but Christopher helped prove it was Albert Barger. During the C.A.R. year, we will be Taking Flight with Maryland C.A.R. as we help Wounded Warriors deepen their roots, spread their wings, and take flight. Maryland C.A.R. will partner with Luke s Wings, a non-profit organization that assists a Wounded Veteran s Family by flying the family to the bedside of their loved one in need. Maryland C.A.R. will raise funds to surround wounded warriors with their family during the oftentimes long and difficult recoveries. Luke s Wings is dedicated to providing families with the means to visit during a Wounded Warrior s hospitalization and rehabilitation and is holding a 1.5-mile family-friendly walk through downtown Bethesda, passing Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, followed by a Community Block Party, featuring food, games and music! 100% of the proceeds from the Heroes Walk to Fly! will fund Luke's Wings' mission. The DAR is a great supporter of the Society so it was a great way for the children to show their thanks while also having fun and eating pizza afterwards. Thomas Johnson Society Thomas Johnson Society had a very successful meeting and event at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in November where the children were able to unfurl a large flag and learn about the various flags of the U.S. by Fort Rangers. Members of the Col. John Eager Howard Chapter also attended this joint meeting. December 2014 SSB Editor John A. Barnhouser Jr. and Sr. Editor Christos Christou, Jr. Page 8

9 V USO Family Halloween Party In October members of Maryland CAR met at the USO building in Fort Meade to assist the hosting of a family oriented Halloween party for families that live on base. Members Spencer and Leah Paire, Chase Brokaw, Anna Haas, Courtney Fussel and new member Eva attended as well as several seniors. After depositing their Cake Walk donations on the dessert table, CAR members joined other volunteers for a brief orientation where assigned jobs. Then, there was time to socialize and learn more about the USO from the other volunteers before the guests arrived. Dressed in their cute, funny, and creative costumes; the children and their parents started to arrive. Many people headed outside where Spencer, Chase and Eva were helping at the donuts on strings Ghosts in the Forest game station. Powdered donuts were suspended on strings and the goal was for the children to try to bite the ghosts out of the air without using their hands. It was a popular game, and none of the volunteers could resist eating a ghost or two. Inside, families made crafts or headed to the food where Mrs. Fussel, Ms. Haas and Ms. Quillin helped serve the pizza dinner that was provided, ensuring that all the guests were well fed. Leah, Mrs. Cronin, and Ms. Worrell took pictures, helped guests find different activities and lent a hand wherever it was needed. The scariest part of the evening was visiting the Mad Scientist's Lab. At the lab, dressed in a lab coat and disguised in a wild mane of white hair, mustache and bushy eyebrows, Monica Paire played the role of devious mad scientist. She hosted the Mysterious Feelies game, where children would reach behind a curtain to feel various body parts such as: eyeballs (green olives), vampire teeth (candy corn), ogre skin (tortilla), and zombie fingers (dried mango slices). She did an exemplary job horrifying and grossing out the children, explaining in a creepy lisp how ogre skin is clammy and hot when an ogre is alive but cools quickly as she peeeeeeellls the skin off a live ogre's scalp and how sometimes she just can't resist taking a bite out of the zombie fingers every now and then and did just that. At 8:00, the main events kicked off with a sack race outside followed by a cake walk, then a costume contest and a raffle for a new bike. There were so many cakes, cupcakes and plates of cookies donated for the cake walk that even children who didn't win the game were sent home with a plate of sweets. All the participants were overjoyed to receive a plate of sweets. The competition for best costume was fierce because there were so many creative and well-designed costumes. The winners were a tiny little girl dressed in a spectacular Energizer Bunny costume, a little boy, about 2 years old, dressed as a farmer, and a mom dressed as a theater food vendor selling a gigantic box of popcorn that she appeared to be carrying around in front of her. The oversized bucket of popcorn camoflauged a baby front carrier with her infant in it. The baby wore a cap covered in popcorn. Shortly after 8:30 the party ended. Everyone went home happy. The families disbanded with full stomachs, plates of goodies, and for the lucky ones, the prizes they won that night. The MD C.A.R. volunteers also had fun at the party and agreed they hope to come back for other USO events. December 2014 SSB Editor John A. 10 It is never too late to keep a promise The U.S. Congress has kept a 231 year old promise by commissioning a painting to be hung of Bernardo de Galvez in Congress. It has been since 1783 that Congress pledged to hang a portrait in the U.S. Capitol honoring Bernardo de Galvez, a daring Spanish military leader who became a hero in the colonies during the American Revolution. Galvez had been the governor of Spanish-controlled Louisiana. He led his Spanish troops against the British in Alabama, Florida and Louisiana. A 1783 congressional resolution ordered a portrait to be placed in the room in which Congress meets. In addition, the House of Representatives last July and the U.S. Senate this December unanimously approved resolutions (H.J. Res. 105, S.J. Res. 38) conferring honorary citizenship of the United Sates to Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid The conferring of honorary U.S. citizenship to Gálvez places him in a small group of only 7 other historical figures to receive this honor. Did you know? The resolution approved by the U.S. Congress signifies not only the recognition of the mutual history between Spain and the U.S., but also represents an important gesture towards the contribution of the Hispanic community to the history and society of the United States of America. So it is never too late to keep a promise even 200+ years later.
