This year, April was kicked off with a very inspiring Easter Sunday. We had more than 100 people join in fellowship with an amazing breakfast, an egg hunt, and an uplifting service. This could not have been possible without many helping hands and to that, we say thank you to everyone who was led to help and to all of those that continue to do so. On April 15th, we were blessed to have several new families join our congregation. They were celebrated with a welcome ceremony during the service and with a cake and goodies during the fellowship hour. I am excited to see what May will bring! There is always a need for willing helpers, please contact me if you would like to learn more about helping to serve the congregation through Fellowship. 3 St. Philip By: Chief Elder, Bill Dahlgren Philip was born in Bethsaida, Galilee Israel. He died about 80 AD in Hierapolis, Turkey. The non-canonical book, Acts of Philip says he was crucified in Hierapolis, Turkey because he converted the wife of the proconsul of the city to Christianity. When Philip was called by Christ to be his apostle, he was probably a follower of John the Baptist. Christian tradition says that Philip preached in Greece, Syria and Turkey. Like the brothers, Peter and Andrew, Philip was a native of Bethsaida on Lake Genesareth (John 1:44). He also was among those surrounding the Baptist when the latter first pointed out Jesus as the Lamb of God. On the day after Peter s call, when about to set out for Galilee, Jesus met Philip and called him to the Apostolate with the words, Follow me. Philip obeyed the call, and a little later brought Nathaniel as a new disciple (John 1:43-45). On the occasion of the selection and sending out of the twelve, Philip is included among the Apostles proper. His name stands in the fifth place in the three lists (Matthew 10:2-4; Mark 3:14-19; Luke 6:13-16) after the two pairs of brothers, Peter and Andrew, James and John. The Fourth Gospel records three episodes concerning Philip which occurred during the epoch of the public teaching of the Savior: 1. Before the miraculous feeding of the multitude, Christ turns towards Philip with the question: Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat? to which the Apostle answers: Two hundred penny-worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little. 2. When some heathens in Jerusalem came to Philip and expressed their desire to see Jesus, Philip reported the fact to Andrew and then both brought the news to the Savior. 3. When Philip, after Christ had spoken to His Apostles of knowing and seeing the Father, said to Him: Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us, he received the answer: He that seeth me, seeth the Father also. These three episodes furnish a consistent charactersketch of Philip as a naïve, somewhat shy, sober-minded man. No additional characteristics are given in the Gospels or the Acts. Children s Ministry Tammy Ruano Easter was such a wonderful time, we had over 50 families join us for our Easter Egg Hunt! We had quite an adventure! We ate Resurrection rolls and were able to talk about exactly what Jesus did for us on the cross. It is such a blessing to be able to share what Jesus did on the cross for us with the littlest of hearts. Sometimes I forget what it is like to hear the amazing story of salvation for the first time and the wonder that is found in the cross. 7 Congratulations to Alison Peckham and Grace Steffens These students have earned the status of Valedictorian and Salutatorian. Grace has been accepted to Pacific Lutheran High School and Alison to the California Academy of Math and Science (CAMS). CAMS is a school that customarily accepts only one student per year per private school, however this year they have accepted two Christ Lutheran Students!
