2 CASE STUDY Joseph Banks was born in 1743 to a wealthy family. He possessed a passion for botany that became apparent at a young age and lasted his entire life. After studying at Oxford University, Banks inherited his father's fortune and made his first voyage of discovery aged just 23. Banks decided that he would spend his vast wealth to discover new lands and indulge his own interest in botany. Banks was a scientist, explorer and botanist Aged 23 he became well known when he accompanied Phipps on the HMS Niger to Newfoundland and Labrador to study their natural history. He returned with many new plant and insect specimens. Banks's became an adviser to King George III and urged the monarch to support voyages of the discovery to new lands, hoping to indulge his own interest in botany , The First Voyage Banks joined the expedition, led by Captain James Cook to explore the unknown lands of the South Pacific, this was known as the First Great Voyage which led to the colonization of Australia. This voyage is like a present-day scientist being given the chance of a trip to another planet, with a chance to study new plants in unknown lands. The expedition circumnavigated the globe and visited South America, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia and Java. Banks collected an enormous number of specimens on the way and, on his return, his scientific account of the voyage and its discoveries sparked considerable interest across Europe. returning to immediate fame. Banks provided 10,000 to allow naturalists Solander and Spöring alongside artist Parkinson, a scientific secretary alongside two servants. They made collections and observations in South America, Tahiti and New Zealand before reaching Australia. His major landfalls on the eastern coast of Australia were at Botany Bay (April 1770) and at the Endeavour River (August). Over 30,828 plant specimens were collected and over1,400 of these were entirely new. Almost 800 specimens were drawn by the artist Parkinson and appeared in Banks' Florilegium. He held the position of President of the Royal Society for over 41 years. He advised King George III on the Royal Botanic Gardens and sent other botanists around the world to collect plants to make the world's leading botanical gardens. 2

3 1778 He became president of the Royal Society of Science and promoted the career of many scientists and in his capacity as director of the Royal Botanic Gardens he sent many botanists abroad to find new plants and extend the Gardens' collection. Although he did not participate in any further travels he was involved in promoting most of the expeditions of his day and regularly collaborated with scientists of other nations Joseph Banks was Knighted and became Sir Joseph Banks Banks organised Matthew Flinders' voyage on the HMS Investigator ( ) which helped define the map of Australia Sir Joseph Banks died on the 19 th of June Banks Florilegium, a collection of engravings of plants compiled by Banks and based on drawings by Swedish botanist Solander during Cook s voyage, were published. 3

4 Case Study Questions Individual Task Before answering these questions, watch the following video of Joseph Banks What qualities do you think Joseph Banks possessed? Write a few sentences in your exercise book. 2 - What age was Joseph Banks when he died? 3 - Find the definition for the following words and use them in a sentence to describe Joseph Banks. - Aristocrat - Botanist 4 - In1768, Joseph Banks invested 10,000 of his own money to board the First Voyage. Use the website listed below, to calculate how much this amount would be today Using the current currency exchange rate, can you convert the amounts from UK Pounds to Australian Dollars? 6 During the First Voyage, Banks surveyed almost 3200km of the Australian Coastline. Can you convert this into metres? 7 - Complete a timeline that will provide a graphical overview of Joseph Banks life from his birth to death. To help, there is a sample timeline on the next page. Complete the timeline in your exercise book. It would be a good idea to colour this timeline to make his key achievements stand out. 8 - In your own words, write a paragraph or two about Joseph Banks life and his major achievements. You may use the case study and your timeline to help you. 4

(See page 6) 2 - Joseph Banks Secondary College various buildings are: - Flinders (Home Economics and Technologies), named after Matthew Flinders - Discovery Centre (Library), named after the HMS Discovery - Investigator (Community Spaces and Science), names after the HMS investigator - Endeavour, named after the HMS Endeavour Think Can you identify where in the school, these buildings are located? Pair Move into a group of 4, you are required to reseach one of the areas listed above and take notes. You are then required to pass your information onto others in your group. Share Once each member of your group has finished their research, you are required to bring your knowledge together and create a report on Pages on the Ipad. Your report should include information on each area and must contain images. 3 - Working in your group of 4, categorise Joseph Banks life. Category examples could include; People that he worked with, boats (HMS) that he sailed on, places that he visited, plants that he found.
