2 Background John Smith, an English soldier, explorer, and colonial governor, played the dominant role to establish the Jamestown colony, which was the first English settlement in North America in the early 17th. Under his leading, people had learnt how to farm and hunt and they built a good relationship with Native Americans. The most contribution he made was exploring and mapping the Chesapeake Bay area in Virginia.

4 By experiencing a turbulent period in his life, Smith ultimately became a knight with richness. However, unfortunately, he was sold as a slave after being a knight.

5 Slave Life As a slave, he was sent to a mistress by his owner. Dramatically, this mistress fall in love with him and treated him as her husband. Because of this, Smith had a chance to escape.

6 Fugitive Life After escaping from that Greek mistress living in Ottoman, he travelled to Muscovy. Then, he travelled to the Europe and North America. Finally, in 1604, he travelled from the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth to England.

7 A New Adventure In 1604, due to his financial difficulties, Smith became involved with the Virginia Company of London s plan to colonize Virginia for profit. On 20 December 1606, this exploration set sail in three small ships.

8 During the journey, Smith was deemed as a troublemaker, so the captain decided to execute him when they reached the destination.

9 Voyage to Virginia On 14 May 1607, the captain with his stuff landed to Virginia. Probably, Smith was an angel sent by the God because he prevented his death. According to the order from Virginia Company, he was released and designated as one of the leaders of the new company.

10 Various Difficulties in New Settlement After landing, the captain chose Jamestown as a new settlement. After the four-month ocean trip, their food stores were sufficient only for each to have a cup or two of grain-meal per day. Due to swampy conditions and widespread disease, someone died almost every day.

11 During the period of starvation and disease, Smithe tried to solve these issues.

13 Smith s explorations of the Chesapeake Bay In July and August of 1608, after solving the issues, Smith left Jamestown to explore the Chesapeake Bay region. He mapped around 3000 miles of the Chesapeake Bay area.

14 Encounter with Pocahontas tribe In December 1607, while seeking food along the Chickahominy River, Smith was captured and taken to meet the chief of the Powhatans. Smith feared for his life, but he was eventually released without harm and later attributed this in part to the chief's daughter Pocahontas who, according to Smith, threw herself across his body. Finally, they came back to Jamestown together.

15 Explore New England area In 1614, Smith returned to North America to the coasts of Maine and Massachusetts Bay. He named the region New England. The purpose of his exploration was to find sources such as oil, fish, and furs. He would send abundant sources back British for commerce.

16 Later Life On 21 June 1631, Smith passed away in London. He was buried in 1633 in the south aisle of Saint Sepulchre-without-Newgate Church, Holborn Viaduct, London. In his colony New Hampshire, colonists built a monument in 1864 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of John Smith's visit.
