2 MOMENT FOR REFLECTION GATHERING TOGETHER TO PRAISE GOD In our Lenten journey with Jesus toward the cross that awaits him in Jerusalem, he begins to teach his disciples pretty clearly that he knows that his death is coming. In denial, not wanting to think about this possibility, his disciples miss the Good News that awaits on the other side of death. And Jesus is pretty clear about his pending resurrection as well. This morning s story from the gospel of John gives us a single sentence in which is contained the whole of the Good News, from death to resurrection: Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. This morning we reflect on how our life together is both planted seed and rich harvest. PRELUDE.... Elegy...Riekstins Aija Reke, violin Laudate Dominum...W.A. For His has bestowed His mercy upon us, And the truth of the Lord endures forever. Amen If you have come this morning with a joy or concern that you would like to have included in the morning prayers, please fill out a Hancock Prays card that you will find on the back of the pew in front of you. Read it carefully, remembering that our worship services are televised and live-streamed over the internet. Place the card in the offering plate as it passes by later in the service. The cards will be brought to the ministers for inclusion in this morning's prayer. CALL TO WORSHIP.... 4 THE PSALM Psalm 139:1-6 All sing: Lord, you have searched ḿe and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my ĺying down, and are acquainted with áll my ways. All sing: Search me, O God, and know my heart. Even before a word is ón my tongue, O Lord, you know ít completely. You hem me in, behind ánd before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonder ful for me; it is so high that I canńot attain it. All sing: Search me, O God, and know my heart. must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say Father, save me from this hour? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name. Then a voice came from heaven, I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again. The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, An angel has spoken to him. Jesus answered, This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself. He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. THE SERMON.... Seeds Planted, Seeds Produced.... Rev. Paul Shupe CLOSING HYMN.... O Master Let Me Walk With Thee... #465 BENEDICTION *PASSING THE PEACE POSTLUDE.... Adagio in C....W.A. Mozart THE GOOD NEWS IS PROCLAIMED THE GOSPEL READING.... John 12: Emelia Attridge Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, Sir, we wish to see Jesus. Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me *Congregation standing some may wish to remain seated 6 7

Announcements Learn More About Place of Promise Today On Sunday, March 18 at 11:00 a.m. in the Dining Room, Beth Kidd, the founder of Place of Promise, a new mission partner of Hancock, will visit. She will tell how she came to start Place of Promise and answer questions about how its mission has evolved. It s a remarkable story, going back to the 70 s when Beth was a young nurse working at Boston City Hospital, living in Roxbury with her husband, and literally walking the streets at night tending to the alcoholics and drug addicts whom she d nursed during the day. After many years of this, some churches supported her in buying a house in Dorchester where these people, and others like them who had nowhere else to go, could live. When Dorchester became too troubled, Beth moved her work to Lowell Place of Promise now consists of four houses there. You ll find that Beth has a rare combination of a nurse s practicality understanding the kind of structure and services that people in recovery need and a missionary s heart knowing that the most important thing these folks need is the sense that God loves them. But how to nurture that sense in folks who have a long burden of shame from bad choices, who are used to ingesting a substance to erase the shame? It s not easy, yet Place of Promise often does it. Witness the parole officers at prisons and case workers at detox centers who call regularly to place people there. Come hear Beth s stories of delivering God s love. Join Hancock for the March for Our Lives Join Hancock at the March For Our Lives, Saturday March 24 th, 12:00-4:00 p.m. on the Boston Common. Similar marches are being held throughout the country on the same day for all who "oppose the senselessness of American gun violence." Barbara will be leading a group from Hancock. More details to come soon, but you can follow the link to register here: hancockchurch.org/end-gun-violence Lenten Labyrinth Meditation The labyrinth will be available for meditation and reflection in Clark Hall each Sunday in Lent. Please feel free to visit before or after worship. Information about the labyrinth will be provided for those who are interested

The Baltic states are celebrating one hundred years of independence this year and Baltic Duo celebrates with a concert program that will introduce wide variety of contrasting musical styles, including dreamy and pastoral compositions by Zemzaris and Kõrvits, a minimalist piece by Valančiūtė, a new composition written at 2018 by Dombrovska which was specially composed for the Baltic Duo, a very modern sounding solo piece for flute and CD by Kupriss, melancholic Monologue by Porietis and an edgy, dissonant duo by Pavasars. As the only non Baltic piece, a classic by Rolla will resonate with the dreamy and versatile concert program to celebrate Baltic music in America. We'll use our powers of exploration and imagination to bring the stories of our faith to life! Relational Meeting Campaign Our theme for Lent this year is Life Together, taken from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's classic book by the same name. Bonhoeffer opens with Psalms 133:1: "How good and pleasant it is when God s people live together in unity." Community, he writes, is not something to be taken for granted. In that frame of mind, we ask that you take some time this Lent to spend time together in one-on-one conversation, especially with folks you don't know well. We call these relational meetings because their purpose is to get to know one another each other s interests, motivations, and passions and not just to conduct business or chat about the latest news. So please reach out one or more times this Lent and ask someone you don t know well to have a cup of coffee with you. Take minutes to sit down, share your stories, and try to understand what makes the other person tick. Each of you should try to share and learn in equal measure. (If you d find it easier to have someone contact you, call or Barbara at barbara@hancockchurch.org and she will make sure you re contacted.) A few suggested guidelines to make these meetings easy and enjoyable: Find a comfortable place to talk. During Lent, we are turning the Wilson Room into a "Fellowship Cafe," where coffee, tea, and hot chocolate will be available on Sundays for anyone wanting to have a comfortable place to have a conversation. Or meet at one of Lexington s innumerable coffee shops, or any other convenient place. Agree on a time limit, so it s easy to draw the conversation to a close. We suggest 45 minutes. Be prepared to share your story, just as you re asking the other person for theirs. Be mindful to keep the conversation balanced, with each of you talking and listening in equal measure. Above all, listen we have become all too adept at talking over one another, and not good at listening to one another. Here are some ideas for questions: Where did you grow up? Do you still have family there? Do you get back to visit? What about that place is instilled in you, and do you still carry with you? What is something about you that if people didn't know they really don't know you well? What are your passions in life? Where does that passion come from? Who influenced you? How did you wind up at Hancock? What led you here? What has kept you here? Please tell me about one of the biggest blessings in your life. Ask follow-up questions: Tell me more about this, what did you mean by that? Try to figure out what is most important to the person. You can prod, but don t pry, and be sure to respect each other s privacy and comfort level. At the end, chances are you ll discover an entirely new dimension to a fellow congregant, and have a new or deeper friend to say hello to on Sunday

8 Announcements Meet the Members of the Relational Meeting Campaign Dan Belin Greetings, Hancock! My family and I moved to Lexington about 5 years ago from Washington DC and joined Hancock a few years ago. As a fairly new person to Lexington and Hancock, I am helping with the relational campaign to get to know others in the congregation better and to grow our communal relationships. As I get to know others better and learn about their Hancock experiences, I hope to deepen my religious and spiritual experience. Ashley Davis Hello, Hancock! I am Ashley, and I live in Arlington with my kids, Nate and Charlotte. As a clinical social worker, I enjoy nurturing relationships, engaging in conversations, and promoting social justice. Those passions feel central to my involvement with the Relational Meeting campaign. I am eager to deepen our connections with each other and increase our sense of community at Hancock. Tim Hoffman Hello, I am Tim Hoffman and I have been attending Hancock Church along with my wife Anne for 25 years. As a participant in the Relational Meeting Campaign, I look forward to engaging in conversation to build relationships and gain understanding of the views and interests of others, and to help strengthen our church community. Wendy Myers Hello Hancock family! I m Wendy Myers and my husband Todd and I have been at Hancock for over a year now. The Relational Meeting Campaign is a great way for me to meet as many wonderful people in our community as I can without people thinking I m strange! It s a legitimate excuse to chat and have coffee! If we haven t met yet, don t be afraid to grab me at church, Pastor s class and/or book group and we can schedule a meeting! Announcements Andy McClaine Hello Hancock Church, My family and I have been members of Hancock Church for 39 years. I am an Mechanical Engineer and I volunteer with the Hancock Youth Group on their mission trips. I have a deep respect for the community of the Hancock Youth Group and would like to see that same camaraderie within our adult community. Relational Conversations seems like an effective tool to accomplish this goal. We can get to know each other better through relational conversations than we might if we only converse in coffee hour. I am looking forward to getting better acquainted with many more of my Hancock brothers and sisters and to build our community with this technique. Wendy Tanahashi-Works Hello Hancock Church community! My name is Wendy Tanahashi-Works and my husband David and I have been members of Hancock for 14 years (actually David much longer, he grew up attending this church). The Hancock community has been an integral part of our lives, as well as helped shape and support our four children. Hancock has provided me many with faith based opportunities to teach and participate in community outreach programs, for which I am very grateful. Moreover, I have encountered lifelong friendships while attending Hancock and for this reason feel it is important to have relational meetings, deepening my connections with members of this vibrant community. I am happy to meet with you over a coffee or tea in the Wilson room, preferably Saturdays and Sundays but could meet in the late afternoon during the work week as well. Please give me a call: Thanks! and look forward to knowing you! 14 15
