2 MOMENT FOR REFLECTION GATHERING TOGETHER TO PRAISE GOD In the moment you decided to come and worship God this morning, whether you considered it consciously or not, you affirmed that you, and everyone else who has joined you in the pews, are indeed made in the image of God. When we worship, we affirm that God is our creator, and that we are formed in God s image. This is not the only affirmation that we make, often without thinking, but it is an important one. In this morning s scripture passage, Jesus is confronted with another image, not of God, but of Tiberius, the Roman Emperor, whose picture was stamped on the coins that were used to pay taxes to the Empire. Jesus is asked whether faithful people should pay the tax or not. Jesus points to the image of Tiberius on the coin, thereby contrasting it with the image of God stamped on each one us, and says Render to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God. Today we consider the question of what should be rendered to God by those who have affirmed that we are all formed in the image of God. PRELUDE HANCOCK PRAYS If you have come this morning with a joy or concern that you would like to have included in the morning prayers, please fill out a Hancock Prays card that you will find on the back of the pew in front of you. Read it carefully, remembering that our worship services are televised and live-streamed over the internet. Pass the card to the center aisle nearest you during the singing of the Opening Hymn. The Ushers will collect the cards and bring them to the ministers. CALL TO WORSHIP One: Come, let us be gathered together, to worship God our Maker. Many: God called the worlds into being and created men and women. In God s own image we are created. One: Let us worship God our Redeemer. Many: When we are lost or in distress, it is God who seeks us, finds us, forgives us. In love we are redeemed, restored to the image of God. One: Let us worship God our Sustainer. Service of Worship 2 *Congregation standing some may wish to remain seated

3 Many: In the day to day struggle to walk in paths of faith, it is God who walks with us. In mercy we are sustained, living and growing in the image of God. One: Let us worship God together. Many: Thanks be to God, who made us in God s image, and declared it good. Praise be to God. *OPENING HYMN God of Abraham and Sarah #3 This is our hymn of the month. We have been using it each week in October in various ways, and will conclude its use next week with a festive arrangement with brass and timpani to mark the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation. 5 THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. THE GOOD NEWS IS PROCLAIMED TESTIMONY "On Grotonwood" Evan Kendall THE SCRIPTURE READING Matthew 22:15-22 Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not? But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax. And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, Whose head is this, and whose title? They answered, The emperor s. Then he said to them, Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor s, and to God the things that are God s. When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.
