Kemmerly Dr. Phillip R. Kemmerly is Professor Emeritus of Geology in the Department of Geosciences at APSU. Professor Kemmerly retired in 2011 and just completed his post-retirement teaching in hydrogeology and Environmental Geology in May Phil did his bachelor s and master s degrees at Kansas State University in chemistry and earth science. Phil completed his doctoral work in environmental geology at Oklahoma State University in He taught geology for thirty-nine years of which twelve years he served as chair. He holds professional geologist licenses to practice in both Tennessee and Kentucky. Dr. Kemmerly has been a geological consultant for more than thirty-five years to corporations, law firms, local, state, and national government specializing in sinkholes and ground-water problems in limestone terranes. Phil authored two monographs on karst processes and more than fifty refereed papers in national and international publications. Phil has lead field trips in Tennessee and Kentucky dealing with karst topography for national and international geological and geotechnical engineering societies with members from Europe, Asia, and South America. He was a member of the Karst Geomorphological Research Group at Oxford University for his entire career at APSU. He published three papers with the Karst Geomorphological Research Group, the last of which was published in He also has co-authored two papers in a Slovakian geological journal in both English and Slovak. Phil s interest in history goes back to his high school years when he won the Daughters of the American Revolution American History award given to the outstanding American History student in Kansas for having the highest score on the state standardized American history exam given at close of the junior year in high school. He has read military history in his leisure time since high school. His favorite period is the Civil War. In retirement, Phil has applied hydrology, geology, meteorology, physics, soil mechanics, statistics, and mathematics to problems of Civil War combat in Tennessee. His Civil War articles include: (1) Into the Muck and Mire: Mud, Soils, and Sediments of Shiloh published in the Spring 2014 issue of the Tennessee Historical Quarterly 2014; (2) Fighting and Dying in A Frozen Hell: The Impact of Ice, Snow, Fog, and Frozen-hard Ground on the Battle of Nashville in the Summer 2015 issue of the Tennessee Historical Quarterly; (3) Lew Wallace s Controversial March to Shiloh: A Time-Distance-Rate Analysis in the Fall 2015 issue of the Tennessee Historical Quarterly; and (4) The Impact of Flooding on the Battle of Shiloh in the October 2015 issue of the Journal of Military History published at Virginia Military Institute. This particular study leads off their special series on the Civil War Sesquicentennial because of its focus on environmental military history. He has several historical articles in various stages of publication including the here to for unrecognized role played by the USS Lexington and USS Tyler in saving General Ulysses S. Grant s army on the first day at Shiloh and a mathematical model to predict the currently unknown number of Confederate casualties at the Battle of Nashville. His current research project deals with the role geology, soil mechanics, and geomorphology played in efforts by the Federal army to break the siege imposed by the Confederates at Chattanooga in

2 MCHS MEMBER OF THE MONTH MARY NELL WOOTEN TENNESSEE MONUMENT AT GETTYSBURG Gettysburg July 1982 In the late 1970 s I attended a Jaycette meeting where Ursula Beach, our County Historian, was the guest speaker. She asked the club to help her raise funds to erect a monument at Gettysburg, PA at the Civil War battlefield. She explained that Tennessee was the only state that had soldiers who fought there with no monument to commemorate their actions. She also said it was especially important for Montgomery County since some of the Tennessee soldiers were from our county. I don t remember how it happened but I became the project officer for the Confederate High Command effort to raise funds in Montgomery County. The activities for raising the money was spread over several years. The original effort to raise money began after a number of Tennesseans attended the Centennial Celebration of the Gettysburg battle in l963. Part of that celebration was re-dedication of state monuments and that led to the group asking about the Tennessee monument. That was when it was discovered that Tennessee and Texas were the only states without a monument to memorialize their soldiers who fought there. Texas erected their monument soon after. Tennessee was a little slower in getting it done. In 1968 a resolution was presented to the legislature asking for approval of the effort to raise money with volunteer funds for the monument. Governor Buford Ellington approved the resolution for state support. The volunteer fund raising began but the volunteer contributions never materialized. Finally the group asked for state support. The Tennessee General Assembly did vote an appropriation for the project but it was vetoed by Governor Winfield Dunn. With that action the state could have given up but instead again turned to organizations and individuals for help. It was at this point that the Clarksville Jaycettes became involved. Felix De Weldon, the sculptor of the Marines at Iwo Jima, was asked to sculpt the monument. The original design was very grand. It was to be done in the round with three figures cast in bronze and mounted on an uneven piece of stone representing the state s topography. It would weigh 40,000 pounds and cost $ 150,000. What Tennessee ended up with was a $35,000 monument combining the design of De Weldon and the Confederate High Command featuring the three men representing the three Tennessee regiments. It was cast in granite from South Dakota and had three marble stars quarried in Tennessee on top representing the three grand divisions of the state. Finally after many years the monument was to be dedicated 119 years after Pickett s charge at Gettysburg. I was selected to attend from Montgomery County for the unveiling ceremony on Saturday, July 3, I left Clarksville that morning for Smyrna air field and a flight on a Tennessee National Guard Plane. I really didn t know what to expect but the plane turned out to be a large troop carrier that had an insert for VIP travel. It was like a living room and a dining area with small tables and chairs. We stopped in Knoxville and picked up other volunteers and landed in Harrisburg, PA. From there we took a bus to Gettysburg National battlefield. It was a rainy, rainy day. The program would have been fabulous except for the weather. Many of the speeches were cut short, and flags were drooping. Besides the rain what I remember most about that day was the rain and the plane ride back to Nashville. I rode in the cockpit area of the plane and we flew home around many thunder storms. Seeing the storms in the distance was a great fireworks show. It was very impressive. In 2015 I was attending a Historical Society meeting when someone announced a trip to Gettysburg. I decided I needed to go back and see the monument that I had helped to dedicate. I had always wanted to go back and that was the chance. I signed up for the trip. In March 2015, almost 152 years after the battle where men from Montgomery County fought, I returned to Gettysburg National Battlefield to see the Tennessee monument. It sits between the Virginia and North Carolina monuments on what I consider sacred ground. It was a proud moment for me to see Tennessee s monument. 4 WINDOW INTO THE PAST Sandra J Stacey Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 15 Nov 1861, Fri. Page 3 Burial of Green Prince The funeral of this unfortunate youth was attended, on Wednesday afternoon, by a large number of our citizens. It was a very sad scene. We, in common with the, community, generally, sincerely sympathize with his deeply distressed mother. It is only a few weeks, since she heard of the death of a son, in the army in Western Virginia, and now she has lost her only other one, under circumstances peculiarly afflictive and distressing. What would you find if you looked in the window into the past in NOVEMBER Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 6 Nov Fri. The Circuit Court of Cheatham County, was organized by the Hon. W. W. Pepper, on the 3d Monday in October, by authority of an act of the present Legislature. It is doubtful whether Cheatham will continue to be a county, for any great length of time, as the counties of Montgomery and Davidson have filed bills in the Chancery Court, for the purpose of recovering the portions of territory taken from them in the formation of the new county. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 13 Nov Fri. Recollect that there is to be a Cotillion Party at Fowler's Hall tonight, given by the young men of Clarksville. Every care will be taken by the managers to secure good order. Every lover of the dance should not fail to attend, as this, undoubtedly will be one of the best conducted parties ever given in the town. Prof. Searcy, and Old Scott will be on hand. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 5 Nov Fri P. 3 Business in our town is quite dull now, the operations of the dry- goods men, constituting about all that is done. Money is scarce, and but few transactions in produce have transpired. We have heard of but two contracts for tobacco. One was for a crop at six cents, and anything over that that the buyer shall give up to the first of next January. The other we heard was bought at the highest price that the buyer shall give during the season. We have heard of no sales of hogs. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 5 Nov Fri. P. 3 We are glad to notice a late improvement upon the Reformed Church, corner of Madison and Third. A handsome front, enclosing a roomy vestibule, has been built, and is surmounted by beautiful dome. When completed, which, we suppose, will be in a few weeks, these improvements will make the building one of the handsomest in the city. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 16 Nov 1860, Fri Page 3 For the Chronicle Mr. Editor-Is it not time for action? We hear to our great surprise and deep mortification that "Minute Men" am being organized in our midst.-- Where? Yes, sir; in Conservative Montgomery, to law-abiding Clarksville. If such a prediction had been made on our streets ten days ago, the one bus so bold would have been set down as fit only for the asylum. But, sir, we have fallen upon strange times, and seeing that such a state of things do exist, should not the conservative men of our town and county at once call A public meeting and frown down such a spirit, or at least hear what such patriots as the Hon. Cave Johnson, Hon. G. A. Henry, Anil other of like standing might have to say in such an emergency What say you to announcing a call for a meeting of that sort for the first Monday In December, or sooner if thought necessary, and let everybody be invited to attend? Good may be the result at least such is the hopes of a lover of the UNION Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 8 Nov 1861, Fri Page 3 Lieut. McWhirter. By an unaccountable over-sight, we have omitted to mention the return home of Lieut. F P. McWhirter of Co. A., 14th regiment. He bore in Virginia the hardships of that hard campaign, until he was wholly disabled from doing duty. He came home unable to walk a step, owing to the inflammation of a slight injury to his ankle, received when out on the Cheat Mountain expedition. Since his return he has been confined to bed, but is, we are glad to know, now improving, and will we hope, soon be restored to his wonted health. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 24 Nov 1865, Fri We Are glad to state that our old friend John Cain, is on board the Iron-horse again. John is an accommodating, clever gentleman, and makes an excellent Conductor. He will have charge of the train from this city to the State Line leaving here in the morning, making connection with the Louisville train - returning in the evening with the passengers and mail. Dick Jackson, known to everybody for the proverbial good humor and cleverness, has charge of the baggage department. We hope that this position is but a stepping-stone for Dick's promotion. He has capacity, and we would be pleased to see him placed in a position to show it. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 2 Nov 1866, Fri Page 3 Ladies- If you unfortunately have any sins to cover up, or if you desire anything to keep off the rude blasts of winter, call at Conets? A Beaumont s and purchase one of those elegant cloaks they are offering so cheap. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 9 Nov 1866, Fri. Page 3 Improvements The new Passenger Depot buildings are nearing completion, and are quite an acquisition and ornament to the eastern part of our city. The thoroughfare leading from Madison street to the Depot will soon be in readiness for metaling, and with substantial plank side-walks, pedestrians can find easy access to and from the cars. In a short time too, all the officials of our railroad will be domiciled there, when, all things considered, this will be the most interesting locality in our thriving little city. Hurrah for our Railroad, our town, and our folks. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 30 Nov 1866, Fri. Page 3 Tennessee Orphan Asylum. CLARKSVILLE. Tennessee. This INSTITUTION BEING NOW IN operation, those who desire the admission of Orphans may correspond with Mrs. A. G. Munford, Corresponding Secretary, who will furnish blank forms of application, and other information. Guardians, &c., are earnestly requested not to send children to Clarksville, prior to such correspondence, as the officers of the Institution will be responsible for the care of no children whose case has not been previously considered by them. MARION HENRY Pres t. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 6 Nov 1868, Fri. Page 3 There is now in Paris a movement on foot for the purpose of breaking down the constantly increasing influence of the women of the demi monde. A society of ladies to be called "The League of Honest Women," is to be organized. The members of this league pledge themselves not to patronize any establishment where the demi monde is known to deal; not to rent any boxes at theatres to which the demi monde is admitted; not to ape the costumes introduced by the demi monde; not to invite to their soirees any gentlemen known to keep mistress, etc. Old Dupin suggested something of the kind four years ago. Very influential authors, artists, politicians, etc., now favor the formation of such a league. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 6 Nov 1869, Sat We noticed the neat frame building recently erected by our friend, Guil. Slaughter, at Cherry's Station, as we passed there the other evening. He is about, to establish a post-office there, to be called St. Bethlehem. Where did you get the name from? This in one of the Saints we have failed to read about. But notwithstanding this, we hope he will procure us a good list of subscribers, in that neighborhood, and we will take great pleasure in putting St. Bethlehem upon our mail book. "window into the past is closed. 4
