4 Dear Fellow Motorcyclists: American Bikers for Awareness, Training, and Education (A.B.A.T.E.) of Minnesota is a not for profit, grass roots organization that is committed to educating motorcyclists and the general public about motorcycling. A.B.A.T.E. members ride many different types and brands of motorcycles. We are all people with a common interest in a common activity. The fact that we share an interest in motorcycling is more important than the type of motorcycle we ride. There are chapters of A.B.A.T.E. located throughout Minnesota. Each of these chapters is represented on the A.B.A.T.E. Board of Directors (BOD). The BOD also includes the A.B.A.T.E. state officers. The BOD meets once each quarter to discuss the operation of the organization. In addition, each chapter holds a monthly meeting in their area of the state. A.B.A.T.E. is a member driven organization. Members are encouraged to participate in any of these meetings. A.B.A.T.E. seeks to promote the positive aspects of motorcycling and strives to protect the rights of motorcyclists by being involved in the local, state and national political process. Safer motorcycling, reducing accidents and fatalities can be best accomplished by education and training of both the motorcyclists and the general public, not necessarily through additional legislation. Our ability to enjoy many freedoms while riding motorcycles in Minnesota is the direct result of the work done by motorcyclists in our state. These people have joined together to fight for our rights and freedoms. The efforts of these people have made Minnesota a leader in motorcycle safety. We have one of the toughest licensing standards in the nation, the best public awareness programs, and the most comprehensive rider education programs in the nation. These efforts have helped reduce motorcycle accidents, injuries, and fatalities in spite of the growing number of licensed motorcyclists in Minnesota. To continue these efforts we need your support and participation. Show your commitment to protecting and preserving your rights as a motorcyclist in Minnesota. Participate in the meetings, rides, and the fundraising activities. You will be informed about the motorcycle activities in the state by receiving oad oise, the A.B.A.T.E. monthly news publication. A.B.A.T.E. is fun, educational and a great way to meet people and make new friends with similar interests. With your help, we can continue to promote the positive image of motorcyclists. If you want more information about A.B.A.T.E., please attend any of our meetings, meet other members, and ask questions. We are pleased that you have decided your rights are worth protecting, that the positive aspects of motorcycling are worth promoting, that education is important, and that the cost of an A.B.A.T.E. membership is a small price to pay to preserve and promote these principles. Members are the most important thing that A.B.A.T.E. has, so Thank You for becoming a member and we look forward to seeing you at our events. 5 STATE COODIATO MACK BACKLUD (763) ASSISTAT STATE COODIATO KEVI TODD (507) We have all done it. You see a good looking person on the street, fit and trim, and you think Man, they got it made. ot giving a thought to the hours they spend working out, the cost of their health club membership, home fitness equipment, and healthy diet. What looks great on the outside is actually the result of lots of money and years of hard work. ecently I was at a gathering of motorcycling rights activists from around the country and during conversations I kept hearing You Minnesota guys got it good. And they are right! o adult helmet law, no handlebar height law, no check points, blue dot tail lights are legal, a motorcyclist equal access bill, ok to proceed when a red light does not change, a great motorcycle safety program, vertical and handicap motorcycle license plates, and the list goes on and on. These fellow activists explained how hard they have to work just so they can hope to ride free someday. I got the feeling they were inferring that Minnesota motorcyclists do not have to work very hard now that we have all these great things. So it was ironic when Kirk Hardtail Willard, Motorcycle iders Foundation President, addressed the crowd, he said something to the effect of People don t realize how much work it is to maintain the rights and freedoms we already have. And we have our work cut out for us if we want to keep looking good. It is no secret that news media takes a dim view of motorcycling, constantly portraying freedom loving bikers as less than intelligent. ow they have been joined by a chorus of government regulatory agencies and insurance company groups all promoting the same message; mandatory helmet legislation for all riders in all states. As if by magic helmets on heads will stop crashes from happening. But the media likes the approach because it is quick and easy to explain, allowing them to move on to more interesting things like turning urine into drinking water (no kidding, a front page story). Also, realizing the ineffectiveness of ranting in editorials, anti-motorcycling groups are learning our tactics and countering with their own legislative approaches and political action committees. Just type in motorcycle noise in a Google search and you will get a small glimpse into the future of defending Minnesota motorcycling. These are not anti noise, pro helmet, or even safety groups. Make no mistake these people are anti motorcycling and will use any means at their disposal to see us off the road. And our task will keep getting more difficult as the percentage of riders with the attitude of I wear a helmet all the time so Wow, Summer is zooming along at break-neck speed and we are quickly approaching the end of our riding season. Before I forget, a Big Thanks to Jim and Kristi Orn and her brother Larry for the very relaxing and country setting for our July B.O.D. Always good to get out of a Motel and have a great meeting, which we did. If you are at our State ally reading this, Welcome! You are in for a treat as our folks have put together a ally to be remembered, as they do every year. Great music, food and the bestest times to be found anywhere in the State. Check out the vendors, enjoy some music and just relax as we say Goodbye to summer, the A.B.A.T.E. way. The people in Litchfield are always happy to see the bikes come rolling through town on Labor Day weekend, so be sure and say Hi to them as you do. It's not too early to be thinking of Bikerday next February as we will be making plans for that as it gets closer. ext year a even bigger crowd would make a tremendous impression, so get everyone on the same track and make sure they are kept informed so they can be there. I didn't make it out to the Black Hills this year but was kept informed and from what I have heard, all arrived safe (and a few wet) and our friends from Iowa were in rare form. Ya know, Minnesota riders do leave a mark out there every year as we are the groups that over run Central City and the ones that are listened to and looked up to on Thursday in Whitewood as SMO's from around the country gather and share facts and news about their State. We are all that and more because of our dedicated members. Keep that in mind as we continue to sign up new members and spread the Gospel of A.B.A.T.E. So, there you have it... ide Safe, Be esponsible, make a Difference... See you on the oad, Kevin what do I care about a mandatory law increases. emember seat belt legislation? That s what happened; percentages kept rising until the mandatory law became easy to pass. Freedom is expensive and a lot of work. So you better stay in shape and spend your money on the things that will have you looking good for the motorcycling fights right around the corner. Yours in freedom, Mack OAD OISE 5

I hope you had, or are having a great time! ow is a good time to step forward and volunteer for next year. The best way to improve the ally is to get more involved in the planning. Our next committee meeting will be held at the October B.O.D., Friday evening, 6:30pm Thanks again, - on ALLY SPOSOSHIP SUB-COMMITTEE EPOT WEDY STEIBO (320) DWSTEIBO@MELTEL.ET MEMBESHIP AD ETETIO EPOT MICKEY LIT (320) MEMBESHIP@ABATEM.OG Hello bikers! Well, this a very busy time for all; getting ready for State ally, tryin' to get as many miles in as possible before the four letter word starts to fall. Sorry. We had a good turn out at Algona. We signed up 808 new and renewal memberships. Very good! Thanks for all that help! We are starting to get numbers back up to respectability. I want to thank every chapter for the good job they do on keeping up with their memberships and getting after the renewals. Once again this makes my job much easier. So don't stop here, let's get out there and sign up some more new members and renewals. The numbers that I was shooting for are getting closer so SIG UP, SIG UP!!!! Well, I hope everyone had a safe Sturgis rally and got some great riding in. Be Safe out there!! Mickey I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to each and every one of our Sponsors; not only the Sponsors from this year s rally, but all the past Sponsors as well. This year we have not only met our goals, but exceeded them. And we have you, the Sponsors, along with all our recruiting chapter members to thank for that. This only tells me that A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota has created some great relationships with our Sponsors, and we hope these relationships will continue to get bigger and better each and every year. As of this writing, we have a total of 46 sponsors and out of the 46 we had 14 chapters and one District Director. I d like to say Thank You again to the 20 people who took time out of their busy schedules to recruit these Sponsors. Without you, this program would not succeed. The traveling plaque will be handed out at the October B.O.D. to the chapter who sold the most Sponsorships. Did your chapter win it this year? Our thanks to all the Sponsors of the 2011 A.B.A.T.E. State ally! Wendy Steinborn Its a lot easier to react than it is to think! EDUCATIO EPOT PAUL TJEPKES (320) EDUCATIO@ABATEM.OG September: Labor Day, State ally, kids back to school, cooler weather, the beginning of fall. With that thought in mind, let's talk education. I mean Driver Education. Driver Education classes in Minnesota are required to have some time devoted to motorcycle awareness in their curriculum. Our SHAE THE OAD program meets and exceeds these requirements. All you have to do is introduce yourself to the drivers-ed instructor. After introductions, give him/her a brief overview of what the SHAE THE OAD program is all about. Chances are you will be asked to be a presenter for motorcycle awareness. ow you will be able to influence hundreds of young minds by making them aware of motorcycles. They will remember that BIKE who talked to them about motorcycles. They will remember what you said. They will watch for us when they become drivers. SO, get out there--make A DIFFEECE!!! ide Safe, ide Free Paul 6 September 2011 A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota Inc.

7 GAMBLIG EPOT KIM OSTLUD (507) WILSO AVEUE, FAIBAULT, M GAMBLIG@ABATEM.OG ext meeting: Saturday, September 4th, State ally, Litchfield, 11:00 am Friday, October 14th, Best Value Inn, Crookston, 7:00 pm I would like to take this opportunity, first off, to give a big thank you to Lorie Sindt for helping me once again this year with the vendors. Without her help I would not be able to do double duty at the rally. I also want to give a big thanks to the folks that helped sell the remaining raffle tickets. It s really great when I get extra volunteers so that I don t have to sit at that table. If you happen to be reading the September issue early online and realize that you still have State ally affle tickets in your possession sold or unsold, make sure that you bring them to the rally and turn them in only to me. I keep a log of all outstanding tickets and like to update that log as I go during the weekend. All tickets need to be accounted for before I can do the drawing. And if you aren t coming to the rally make sure to contact someone from your chapter and send any outstanding tickets with them. Mention to them that they need to be turned in only to me. ot someone on my committee or any of the folks sitting at the table selling tickets. ext month I will report on the winners of the raffle. Since all expenses incurred on the raffle will not be known until later in September (20th), I will not be able to report on whether we can do a payback or not until the October B.O.D. For the chapters that happen to have their meetings later in the month, you can contact me if you need that information for your meeting. If there are any chapters out there that would like to order more buddy bears, we do have extras in stock. Please contact either myself or Mack and we will make sure that you get the bears you need. Keep in mind that if you would like to pay for the bears using your gambling funds, that you need to fill out a equest To Use Gambling Funds form, have it signed by your President and Treasurer, and mail that to me along with a current copy of the meeting minutes where that motion was approved. Also, when you are doing your buddy bear runs, please have the organizations that you are donating the bears fill out a receipt. These receipts need to be mailed to me for our files. If you don t have a blank copy of the receipts, you can just use a regular sheet of paper. Make sure to include the following information: Organization that is receiving the bears, how many bears, the chapter donating the bears, and a signature from someone representing the organization that is receiving the bears. emember, the buddy bears cannot be donated to any law enforcement agency. Hope everyone enjoyed the rally. Once again, I would love to see some more faces on this committee. Even if you don t want to be a committee member, you are more than welcome to attend the meetings. These meetings are open to all A.B.A.T.E. members. Granted, it is the committee that makes the decisions on what to raffle and how to donate the money. But it is the total population of A.B.A.T.E. that gives input on such decisions and also approves all the expenditures of this committee. And most of the time that is the same four or five people each month. ew faces mean new and fresh ideas. So, if you want to see something changed, come to a meeting and voice your ideas. PODUCTS EPOT HIAO DUBISKY PODUCTS@ABATEM.OG Hi there, folks! I hope I got to chat with most of you at the ally. I am excited to see how you all liked the new shirts and sweats I ordered. I hope a lot of you came and worked at the table. I would like to say thank you to those of you that do/did help me. I always appreciate an extra hand. I am also pleased to say that my limping Blazer has had a little lift via a new transmission just in time for the ally, ugh and yeah. I would like to remind folks to keep up the maintenance on their rides because it does make a difference. I have yet to be stranded by my little truck and she has been very good at pulling that trailer of A.B.A.T.E. products around. Well, I don't have much else to say right now so I think I will sit back and rest for a bit before I have to get ready for A.B.A.T.E. U. 8 LEGISLATIVE EPOT TODD IBA (952) Something is missing So here I am getting ready for the big ride to Sturgis and I have to get a oad oise article hammered out before I leave so I am looking to the ride ahead for inspiration. I can t help but think as I pack that it sure is nice that I have freedom of choice in the two or three states that I am going to ride in over the next week so I don t need to pack a helmet. Speaking of freedom, Minnesota is one of best states to ride in if you are a freedom loving biker, we have the red light law, the anti discrimination law, blue dot taillights are legal and so are ape hangers. South Dakota isn t far behind, yes they hassle riders for high handlebars but they are ahead of us in one category and that is justice for fallen bikers. Several years ago Congressman Bill Janklow ran a stop sign in his Cadillac and tragically killed a biker from Minnesota by the name of andy Scott. Janklow served 100 days in jail and there was outrage from all around the country and you still see the patches today that say, My life is worth more than 100 days, andy Scott. I have news for you, if that accident happened here in Minnesota Janklow wouldn t have served one day much less 100 days and I think that is just wrong and we need to fix that. I asked Lake Chapter to make a motion at the July A.B.A.T.E. of M Board of Directors (B.O.D.) meeting in regards to our Enhanced Penalties Bill. The motion asked that the Chapter eps bring a proposal back to the Chapters for a vote and then the Chapter eps are to bring the voice of the Chapters back to the B.O.D. in October. There are three choices for the Chapters to choose from and they are; 1) pursue an enhanced penalties bill with the full support of A.B.A.T.E. of M by supporting Motorcycle PAC of M, writing letters to our elected officials about the bill, increasing our attendance at Bikerday, and meeting face to face with our elected officials. 2) We don t like that plan and here is another one. 3) We don t need this bill, the law is fine the way it is. I am asking Chapters to vote for plan number one and here is why. These four methods are tried and true. I know motorcycle rights activists from all over the country that have combined these four methods with great success. I also know motorcycle rights groups from around the country that have got caught up in bickering, back stabbing, drama, conspiracy theories, rumors, and they have lost whatever fight they were fighting because they held petty grudges for years and years. Our choice is simple, we all need to admit that we are not perfect and therefore we should not expect our leaders and Motorcycle ights Organizations to be perfect and we should overcome the desire to be real life soap opera stars and we should move forward in a positive and unified front. If we can do that we will get this bill passed and the only thing missing will be the negative nonsense that destroys freedom in the wind. So if you want justice for our fallen brothers and sisters let s get positive and let s get it done. If you want to hold grudges and get those conspiracy theories all whipped up please leave me out because it won t work and it is a complete waste of my time. See you down the road and stand and be counted, if you don t someone else will. 10 DIAL A IDE CHECKOUT ext meeting: September 4th at the State ally at 2:00 pm So far it has been a great season for riding. I ve sure been putting on a lot more miles than I did last year. With this article, I would like to introduce myself to all who get the oad oise. My name is Michael Taylor. I hold the position of the Dial-A ide secretary and I am also the olling Prairie Chapter ep. I am responsible for taking the minutes of the meeting and getting our issues posted in the oad oise. I want to take this opportunity to tell you all just what Dial-A-ide is all about. You may have probably heard it before, but I am going to cover it again. Motorcycle Dial-A-ide was established in 1990 as a 501C3 non-profit/charitable organization. Our goal is to reduce the incidents of motorcyclists riding while impaired. I will cover what we consider impaired in future articles as well as post them on our website, Our goal is accomplished in three ways: 1. We educate motorcyclists about the consequences of drinking and riding. We strive to promote responsible decision making. Our message is: If you ride, don t drink / If you drink, don t ride. This is accomplished by using our informational handouts; get home safe cards, bar napkins, BAC calculator, and ride straight information which can be found on our web site. 2. We encourage the use of intervention techniques. We promote motorcyclists helping motorcyclists and encourage individuals and business owners to intervene if at all possible if they know a rider is in an impaired state and is planning on riding. Some suggestions for intervention are: a. Eliminate the need to ride by keeping the motorcycle and rider at the present location. b. Find a safe place to store the motorcycle and furnish alternate transportation for the rider. c. Find a sober rider for the motorcycle and alternate transportation for the rider. 3. We have volunteers throughout the state that provide safe transportation for impaired riders, their passengers, and their motorcycles. Just call Motorcycle Dial A DIAL-ID(E) or to arrange for a volunteer to help transport the rider, passenger, and motorcycle to a safe location. Motorcycle Dial-A-ide has an all-volunteer Board of Directors. Volunteers throughout the State of Minnesota provide pickup services. We are supported through charitable donations from individuals, businesses and other motorcycle related organizations. Much of our printed educational material is provided by the Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center with dollars collected from endorsed motorcycle riders in Minnesota. A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota has been a longtime supporter through their contributions and volunteers. As an individual or business, you can designate Motorcycle Dial-A-ide as your charity of choice for your United Way contributions. We do not have an agency number, so you will need to inform United Way you would like you donation to go to: Motorcycle Dial-A-ide, 388 9th Ave. W., Mail Box D, St Paul Park, M Let your fellow workers know that they can also donate to us, or you can simply make a donation to us as a concerned private citizen. On a closing note, if you would like to sit in on one of our meeting, or if you are interested in becoming a volunteer, check out our meeting at the State ally. If you don t plan on coming to the rally, you can still come to the meeting. We will insure that you get free admission to enter the grounds and join us at the meeting. We would enjoy you being there. Thanks for your support and keep em on two. 11 COM EPOT FAK EST (612) In the past there has been discussion about the confiscation of club colors, now we are hearing of rulings on the issue. LOS AGELES, CA. A federal judge has rejected an unprecedented bid by the U.S. government to seek control of a gang's name and its identity via its logo through a court order in a case involving the notorious Mongols motorcycle club. In an eight-page ruling filed Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Otis Wright said he must "regrettably" rule in favor of the Mongols because the gang itself was not named in a 2008 racketeering indictment and it maintained exclusive ownership of the trademarks. Wright granted the biker gang's petition and vacated a preliminary order of forfeiture he signed last year. Prosecutors, for the first time ever, had sought to take control of the Mongol name and the insignia that shows a pony tailed Genghis Khan-like figure aboard a chopper. If Wright had signed the prosecution's proposed order, the government would be the owner of the logo and the club's name. "I guess it was their belief that somehow it would make a difference to the organization, causing it to cease to exist," said George Steele, an attorney who represented the Mongols ation Motorcycle Club. "It's heartening to know the law does what it's supposed to do and protects you from those who try to seize your property and your liberty." U.S. attorney's spokesman Thom Mrozek said his office will review the ruling and consider all options, including an appeal. Prosecutors argued the logo should be forfeited because the Judge sides with biker gang over logo trademarks were acquired and maintained by former Mongol president uben "Doc" Cavazos while the club was involved in criminal activity. Cavazos has pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy and is expected to be sentenced later this year. Steele countered that a person cannot own a collective membership insignia, and Wright seemed to agree in his ruling. "There is no evidence that Cavazos or any other individual member of the organization holds or ever held an ownership interest in the trademarks in question," Wright wrote. The law "does not impose liability on the racketeering enterprise if it is not named as a 'person.'" The effort was part of the indictment that accused gang members of murder, drug trafficking and torture. More than 100 people faced charges in state and federal courts, and dozens have pleaded guilty to crimes ranging from drug possession to conspiracy. Another judge issued an injunction in late 2008 barring Mongol members from wearing the logo. The move led to numerous seizures across the nation of Mongol-related gear. Wright last year entered a preliminary order of forfeiture, but he found in favor of the club in September, ruling that none of the defendants had a forfeitable ownership interest in the logo, and vacated his order. Prosecutors had more evidence to show Wright that Mongol members knew Cavazos was the sole owner of the logo, including a deposition in April where the former gang leader claimed the insignia was his property. "They were in my personal control to begin (with)," Cavazos said. "Mongol ation is mine." The club's website displays the logo on its home page and promises to have an online store with its black-and-white apparel soon. Is this the end of this issue or will there be appeals and additional attempts by government to try to disassemble motorcycle clubs? We will keep you informed if things change. On a lighter note we have heard much about the license plate reading devices being used by government. On my return trip from the COM convention in ew Mexico I came around the toll highway outside of Denver. The tollbooths are now all closed and license plate scanner reading your plate collects the toll and then they send you a bill. I think I was pretty lucky it must have missed my plate so I didn t get a bill, It appears I saved $2.80, everything helps when you are on social security. Plate readers may not always be as effective as government agencies would like. Enjoy the ride, be mindful of the freedom and do what you can to preserve both. Fe STATE OFFICE ADMIISTATO LIZ HEZOG (800) STATEOFFICE@ABATEM.OG Is it September already???? Bummer It doesn't seem like summer has been here all that long. Good day everyone! It is a great day today ( ), 75 degrees is perfect riding weather for Santa. As I write this newsletter a lot of you are enjoying Sturgis. I sure wish I were with you. Be sure to share the pictures and the memories with us all. Let s start with the Freedom First iders Fricken Fifth Birthday Day Party held in Clitheral at the On the Corner Bar. I like you a lot Bev for taking such good care of us Freedom First iders. I hope we didn t mess up your yard with all the camping. I want to thank all of you that helped make this FF anniversary such a huge success. I would mention names but my brain is full and I don t want to over think right now, it may hurt. The day started with pictures at Main Street Brewery in Alexandria, then a very nice bike ride, fantastic food (pig roast), plenty of beverages, music by Gray Matter, music also by Mike Miller, piano solo Stevie (Lone Wolf) Wonder lol, and the bike games. I especially liked the weenie contest. Santa and Shirley won the balloon toss. There was a slowest bike contest but there wasn t a category for us 3 wheelers. I guess that may have required too much time, lol. The best part of the whole night was the visiting and dancing with my fellow FF s. My loving wife Donna reminded me several times throughout the evening how badly I smelled from the hard day of riding and playing. She said I couldn t go near her unless I showered so at about 2 am it was off to the lake. Well, I won t go into details but what a riot we had. It was refreshing and very entertaining to say the least. Thank God there weren't any serious injuries, a definite do over. Oh, I do want to apologize to any women my smelly, sweaty biker body may have come into contact with. If I had to do it all over again, I probably wouldn't change a thing. I had a great time with all of you. I think we might have scared Kelly s mom back to Texas, what a nice lady. Ok everyone; I need to get ready to go enjoy some free brats and beer at the Beetles Ball game with Donna and her co-workers. You Freedom First iders are great and strong as ever, keep up the great work everyone. See you all in Litchfield. I can t wait to make some more memories with you. Oh! Oh! A lot of great ideas have been shared at these meetings and everyone benefits. I know this is short but it's late and I am getting up early to head out in the morning. As always, if I can be of assistance to anyone in the district please don't hesitate to call or me! I would be more than happy to help with anything I can. See ya' on the road! Hmmmm... So once again it s our State ally time and I know a number of people will be reading this at the ally and for some it may be the first copy of the oad oise you have ever read. We all ride different types of bikes and we all ride for different reasons. The most common reason I hear from people is the sense of freedom. I thought I would share some the reasons I ride a bike and maybe you can relate to some or all of them. The first is freedom. I think about this as I am straddling a seat on a machine less that three feet wide rolling down the road on two wheels at 60 mph with no seat belt or any metal, glass or airbags around me. It has to be the closest thing to just sitting on a jet engine and flying at a very low altitude over hills and valleys. Second would be the wind in my face, bugs and all. Have you ever noticed all the aroma s you take in as you ride? There are so many smells that take me back to my youth the instant I smell them. There is the smell of dirt in the spring when the farmers are planting. There is the smell of fresh cut grass or hay, cow manure, fresh tar on a new road or a 1968 Plymouth with 440 or maybe a 1970 Chevelle with a 357 that takes me back to the muscle car era. The third is riding roads I have never been on before and seeing new landscapes or farms, bridges, lakes, rivers or maybe some redneck s place with so much junk piled around it you could take a picture and sell it as art. I bought a boat two years ago. I have not put it in the water yet. Every weekend when the weather is nice, rather than putting the boat in the water, I jump on the Harley and ride. I guess I didn t know just how much I like to ride when I bought that boat. I like to ride with friends in a group of bikers too. It s not too often you call up all your boat owner friends and go riding around on a lake or river with a pack of boaters. Well, one thing is for sure, everyone at the ally enjoys motorcycles and as members of A.B.A.T.E. we are all fighting to keep the freedom we now enjoy on the open road for whatever reason we ride. ide safe and enjoy the ally. I'm praying to the motorcycle gods for a warm fall, this summer has flown by too quickly. This summer has been such a busy riding season that it was hard to attend every ride and event. But for those that I was lucky enough to go to, I had a blast. Thank you again to the Jack Pine iders Chapter and Wisconsin A.B.A.T.E. for a great time. We still have a few things left on our calendar; hope to see you all there! Please don't forget our road clean up on September10th, with enough people to help out, the clean up part goes quickly and we always make time for a little fun afterwards. We will meet at noon. I want to mention that many of our local runs and events have suffered from poor turn out this year. Support your local Chapters, MC's, etc. The riding season is short and a lot of effort is put into these events. Poor weather usually passes and many of these events had little to no rain, however the attendance was very low. Much time and money was wasted. Many of these events are fundraisers to support local charities and need your help to keep them going. Please look to the bike calendar or attend a meeting for events and runs. The summer may be over, but there is still a lot of great riding ahead. See you all soon. ide safe! Lisa 18 September 2011 A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota Inc.

Our State Coordinator, Mack Backlund and the M MF State epresentative, Todd iba, both talked at length at the July B.O.D. about the importance of a strong showing at the State Capitol on Bikerday. We have a good amount of time to plan for that trip as it usually is in February. What did you do to make your summer worthwhile? Me? I brought Buddy Bears to children with my fellow A.B.A.T.E. members and some great people from the COC. I watched my momma buy a sweet little number and relearn the joys of riding a motorcycle. I ogled bikes that were sparkling out in the sun; bit my lip for the ones sitting out in the rain, the whole time daydreaming about just one of them being mine. I let motorcyclists merge in front of me because I know how not to crowd them and told myself I was setting a good example for other drivers. I looked twice not only when pulling out of a drive, but also when making a turn, merging on the highway, and changing lanes. I felt sheer joy in participating in this great thing called LIFE with this great organization called A.B.A.T.E. I couldn't ask for a better bunch of people to spend time with. FIEDS VS. Thank you to everyone who attended the Chapter Campout and those of you who made it to the State ally. I know all at both events had a great time. It's hard to believe the riding season is almost over. This has been a very hot/wet season. Hopefully you where able to get in some miles between the raindrops. The other day a coworker said he saw a motorcyclist wearing full leathers riding down the highway (at first he thought it was me) not wearing a helmet. He asked me what good is that leather if you don't protect your head. I told him it's about the freedom to choose. I could see by the look in his eyes he didn't understand. I broke the ice by telling him that leathers help save your tat's if you fall. He laughed; I then responded with your more likely to fall down the steps in your house and asked him how would he like if the government made a law that you had to wear a helmet every time you walked up or down stairs. I could see he was thinking about that one. I left him with one last statement. It's called freedom of choice and that is what makes America great. By the time ya'll read this, State ally will have come and gone. This year certainly has been a memorable one with all the hot, steamy days and sultry nights... the third hottest summer on record I heard. Minnesota has seen some bad flooding and storms this year as well, but I know our spirit has not been broken like the trees. I have seen neighbors coming together to clean up damage from Mother ature's wrath. What I haven't seen though, is A.B.A.T.E. members coming together as they have in the past. I know that Moose and I have had a hard year this past year and we have not been able to participate in events and attend meetings like we have wanted to, but I have not seen members (who have been able) supporting other Chapter s or State functions. This is disheartening to me because the camaraderie and support is what makes this organization so great. This is only one woman's opinion, take it for what you like. The last thing I wanted to say is congratulations to Derek and Brittany V. on the arrival of their daughter, London Harley VanLuik. She is a wonderful gift! Live by the Spoon~ Die by the Spoon~ Spoon SOUTHWEST ~*Support our Troops*~ ext meeting: Friday, September 9th at the ushmore Senior Center, ushmore, M 7:30 pm There seemed to be a mix-up with our grapevine article for August. I had it submitted on time. However, it didn't get into the correct hands for whatever reason to be published. I would like to apologize to my chapter for the mix-up. Burger nights brought the local community together in support of A.B.A.T.E. every other Wednesday at PD's in ushmore this summer. We held our last one for this summer on August 31st. Southwest Chapter held our first ever street dance on July 9th in ushmore, M. Live music provided by oad Trip out of Sioux Falls, SD. Southwest Chapter President Kevin Harberts and I would like to send out a HUGE THAK YOU to EVEYOE that stepped up in such a big way and helped pull off this huge event!!! Overall a great time was had by all!!! We'll see what happens for next year and possibly making it an annual event!?!? I hope everyone that went to Sturgis had a great time! Don't forget about our own A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota State ally in September at Meeker County fair grounds in Litchfield, M. While you are out and about on the area rides and at different events supporting other chapters, sell tickets for the bike raffle being held at the State ally. COGATULATIOS to Southwest Chapter for being 4th in selling raffle tickets for the A.B.A.T.E.U. affle in 2011!!!! If you are attending the rally please consider working a few shifts to help out, they need help at front gate, security, raffle ticket sales, products, etc. Our chapter is growing but we are still second in the State. So remember when your out and about carry extra tri-folds with you to promote A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota. There are just too many things to list. 25 WAY WEST ext meetings: September 9, 2011, VFW, Appleton, M 7:30 pm October, 7, 2011, VFW, Madison, M 7:30 pm I hope everyone enjoyed Sturgis! Since I can't make another until my husband retires, I think of everyone who does make it every year! We made some changes at our last meeting. We are now alternating meetings between the Appleton and Madison VFW's. We backed up this month's meeting one week. Because not everybody's gonna make it to the ally and the meeting is at the Appleton VFW. So please note the change. We had a pretty good turn out for August's meeting. Let's try to keep that up. For the past couple of years we have had a Fall Fun un and we'd like to have one again - this year on September 24th. Depending upon whether or not Butch can get off work. We may need a new oad Captain. We will also need a chase truck and trailer. Please let me know if you can help out and can make the run. We always have a different route, good stops and a great time. Be sure to check the calendar in this issue and support runs and events for all the chapters you can get to. There are some great runs and events yet to come. For those of you that made it to the State ally, I hope you had a great time, family commitments kept me home, but there is always next year. Is it just me, but did the riding season seem to be shorter this year? It seems the older you get, the shorter the season gets. As you plan your fall runs, let s see as a chapter we can get a group together to support olling Prairie Fallen Friends Memorial un on September 10th. They do a lot to support our Chapter's functions, lets support thiers. As it gets closer to fall, remember to watch out for the deer as they move around. I just found out that a friend of mine, Scot Braun, was riding his bike and had a deer run into the side of the bike sending him and his rider into the ditch. The bike ended up with most of the injuries and they ended up with bumps and bruises. They were lucky! It just goes to show how carefully you ride there is always the unexpected. I have rattled enough. As always, together we ride free. 26 LOWE COE ext meeting: Sunday, September 11th, Stupid Loon oadside Saloon, acine, 2:00 pm Hello Lower Corners! I hope everyone who went to Sturgis had a great time and no problems of any kind and made it home safe. At our August meeting we only had officers show but that is normal for August so no real business was discussed. In September, we do need you to show up and participate because we have many issues facing A.B.A.T.E. this next year and the decisions we make now will show which direction A.B.A.T.E. will be going. As for me because of a change in my employment, we are looking for a new Chapter ep. This is sad for me because I truly enjoy the travel and meeting with all of the other eps. Our September meeting will still be at the Stupid Loon oadside Saloon but because of scheduling conflicts it will be on Sunday at 2:00 pm again. I hope everybody can make it! And as always ride free, ride safe Christopher Callier BIKE JOKE OF THE MOTH: Three Bikers, a Honda rider, a BMW rider, and a custom chopper rider were all sitting in a sauna. Suddenly, there was a continuing beeping sound. The Honda rider pressed his forearm and the beeping stopped. The others looked at him questioningly..."that was my pager" he said, "I have a microchip under the skin of my arm." A few minutes later, a phone rang. The BMW rider lifted his palm to his ear. When he finished, he explained, "That was my mobile phone. I have a microchip in my hand!. The chopper rider felt decidedly low tech. ot to be outdone, he decided he had to do something just as impressive! He stepped out of the sauna, and went to the bathroom. He returned with a piece of toilet paper hanging from his butt. The others raised their eyebrows and stared at him. The chopper rider declared, Well, will you look at that. I'm getting a fax." Hellooooo Flatlanders! Wow September already? Where did the summer go! I hope everyone is having a great riding season, and made it to the State ally, and got home safe. With summer winding down so are the events for the Flatlanders, so look in your oad oise and find a chapter that has events going on and help support them. One event that our chapter had in August was the Write to ide party at Meghan and Ben s house. Thanks guys for hosting that party. This was to help people to learn how to form your letter, to know whom and how to send the letter. At the time of this writing this event has not happened yet, so I hope lots of people showed up and got their letters off. ow, remember to send the replies you receive to Frank Ernst, Trustee of A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota. I look forward to collecting the patches and rockers from Frank at the B.O.D. in October. Well it s a beautiful early August evening and sitting behind a keyboard on such a night should be a sin for a biker to do. So I will end my writing and get some wind in my face! Your State ep, Jeremy Mauseth TI-COUTY ext meeting: September 6th, Frank & Vicki Ernst home, 840 Cree Dr, Chanhassen , 7:00 pm Upcoming events: Labor Day weekend, State ally. I was not able to attend, as my grandkids are here from MI, and it s all about them! So, this posting will be short and sweet! Discussion included the September 24th Tri-County Fundraiser. The ride will start at Cys Bar in Chaska. Please, all of you Tri- County members should try to attend! This money all goes back into the chapter and it sure is a lot more fun when a lot of people are riding together! I also received a letter from the State, mentioning that the Adopt A Highway can resume as normal! So our highway pick up will be scheduled in October sometime! I can't believe I just said October, but there was no reschedule of this in our August meeting, so it will have to be sometime in October! Before the snow flies! (Wished I wouldn't have said that either)! Let s see if we can increase our membership somewhat. Bring a tri-fold to a friend s house, purchase the first one for a biker friend for his birthday or Christmas. Buy a membership for your biker kids, etc. See what we can do! OBAMA SIGS LEAD LAW-EXEMPTIO BILL FO KIDS' OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLES AUGUST 12, 2011 In a victory for families who enjoy responsible motorized recreation, President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill to allow the sale of kids' off-highway vehicles (OHVs) to continue, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports. On Aug. 12, Obama signed into law H , introduced by eps. Mary Bono Mack (-Calif.) and G.K. Butterfield (D-.C.). The measure exempts kids' OHVs from the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008, known as the lead law. The CPSIA, which went into effect on Feb. 10, 2009, banned the making, importing, distributing or selling of any product intended for children 12 and under, including kids' dirtbikes and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), that contained more than a specified amount of lead in any accessible part that might be ingested. H cleared the House by a vote on Aug. 1 just before lawmakers went into their summer recess, and earned Senate approval by unanimous consent the same day. The new law is a victory that is the result of nearly three years of intensive efforts by the AMA and its partner organization, the All-Terrain Vehicle Association (ATVA), their members and millions of advocates of responsible OHV recreation. "Federal legislators deserve a lot of thanks for their tireless efforts, especially U.S. ep. Denny ehberg (-Mont.), U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and all the other lawmakers who supported an exemption," said AMA President and CEO ob Dingman. "Hundreds of thousands of parents, kids and motorcycling club members responded to AMA calls for action to contact their elected officials and their efforts, along with all those volunteers who circulated petitions and took other actions, brought this issue to the attention of Congress and turned the tide in our favor. 32 Motorcycle iders Foundation A number of inaccuracies and inconsistencies have been uncovered in examining data related to motorcycle crashes, injuries and fatalities. If the information is incorrect it can only lead to theories and conclusions that are also incorrect or, at the very least, suspect. Since much of the data is obviously flawed and most of the conclusions are therefore speculative at best, the only true solutions to motorcycle safety are proactive measures which prevent a collision from occurring at all rather than reactive steps that may offer some level of injury mitigation only after a crash has already taken place. ider education that prepares the motorcyclist to interact with other roadway users by learning and practicing the skills necessary for hazard avoidance and developing a strategy to deal with real world traffic is the primary component of a comprehensive motorcycle safety plan. Additionally, educating all motor vehicle operators to be alert and free of impairment as they share the road with others is critical in deterring crashes caused by inattention. When errors, omissions or inaccuracies are discovered in reports or statistics, it calls into question the integrity of results. Additionally, small numbers can be easily skewed by slight or seemingly insignificant variations. Furthermore, numbers may be exploited if uncharacteristic highs or lows are used as a baseline. one of these discoveries are intended to argue against helmet use, but rather to demonstrate that suggesting a helmet law is not the solution to motorcycle safety. Individual states need to maintain the ability to determine what measures best address the needs and desires of their residents as suggested in the ational Agenda for Motorcycle Safety (AMS) Comparison of studies is complicated due to varying criteria, wherein one report references riders, it is unclear if that includes passengers or specifically operators. Other papers may refer to the numbers of persons, crashes or vehicles intermittently.this can be quite confusing as the numbers are usually very close and are frequently compared in error. A Minnesota motorcyclist survived a crash only to be struck by a car while standing on the road attempting to flag down a motorist for assistance.this was subsequently counted as a motorcycle fatality. A Pennsylvania taxi driver, with multiple suspensions, was responsible for about two percent of the state s total motorcycle fatalities when he caused a crash with three motorcycles and killed five helmeted riders in a single incident. Motorcycle fatalities dropped by 10% in 2009 and preliminary reports indicate that 2010 numbers will be further reduced by at least 2%.The Motorcycle Industry Council advises that sales of replacement tires were up by 6.1% in 2010, suggesting an increase in motorcycle usage. A decrease in fatalities despite an increase in exposure would suggest that motorcycle safety and awareness programs, specifically rider education courses, have been successful. The ational Transportation Safety Board has investigated over 120,000 airplane incidents, over 60,000 surface transportation incidents, and just 6 individual motorcycle incidents in their entire 44 year history Apparently enough investigation to warrant adding mandatory helmet laws for motorcyclists on their top ten most wanted list. According to preliminary data from the Governors Highway Safety Association, states that have a mandatory adult helmet law had six fewer fatalities in 2010 than in 2009, while free choice states saw a reduction of 74. The state with the single largest decline in fatalities (Texas -60) is a choice state and a state which requires helmets on all riders tied for the greatest increase (ew York +24). FAS continues to include mopeds in motorcycle crash statistics despite the fact that most states do not require registration of these vehicles.this practice skews the most respected method of measuring the effectiveness of motorcycle safety programs, which is the ratio of accidents, injuries and fatalities per 10,000 registrations. 33 Motorcycle iders Foundation Awareness & Education (MFA&E) was established to promote motorcycle awareness and education due to an everincreasing rider population. o one is more concerned with rider safety than riders themselves, and obviously those best suited to educate newer riders are veteran riders. Promote awareness and education in the motorcycle community to improve riders safety. Please donate, we are a 501C3 Corporation. Your donation is tax deductible. To donate go to our web site listed at the bottom. Motorcycle iders Foundation Awareness & Education (MFA&E) 236 Massachusetts Avenue E, #510 Washington, D.C (202) OAD OISE 33

COTIUED FOM PAGE 27 OBAMA SIGS LEAD LAW-EXEMPTIO BILL FO KIDS' OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLES AUGUST 12, 2011 "I'm sure that those letters, s and telephone calls to Congress had a major impact in convincing lawmakers to exempt OHVs from the lead law," Dingman said. "I'm also convinced that the AMA Family Capitol Hill Climb held on May 26 played a major role, since it put a human face on the issue by showing lawmakers the kids and families who are suffering because of the CPSIA. "I want to thank acer X magazine, Doublin Gap Motocross Park, Mason Dixon iding Association 6 and 7, Tomahawk MX Park, the Middle Atlantic Motocross Association, Budds Creek Motocross Park, High Point aceway, and advocates such as the Yentzer family and Moto-Patriot ancy Sabater, who brought youngsters to Washington, D.C., for the AMA Family Capitol Hill Climb to lobby their lawmakers," he said. Dingman also thanked other organizations and individuals that worked diligently on the effort, including the Motorcycle Industry Council and Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, which represent the motorcycle and ATV industries; the motorcycle enthusiast and trade media; Sean Hilbert, president of Cobra Motorcycles, which makes kids' dirtbikes; the Coombs family and Tim Cotter of MX Sports, which has conducted the famed AMA Amateur ational Motocross Championship featuring thousands of promising young riders for the past 30 years, and Kirk "Hardtail" Willard, president of the Motorcycle iders Foundation. "I want to extend a very special thanks to Malcolm Smith, a member of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, who brought a lot of attention to the unfairness of the lead law when he hosted a media event at Malcolm Smith Motorsports and sold some youth OHVs as a symbolic gesture to protest the law," Dingman said. The AMA has been at the forefront of the fight to exclude child-sized motorcycles and ATVs from the CPSIA since early The association has participated in news events to focus media attention on the issue, lobbied on Capitol Hill, and organized campaigns to encourage riders and parents to contact their federal lawmakers and key decision-makers to exempt kids' OHVs from the CPSIA. As a result, every single member of Congress, as well as members of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has received powerful statements from members of the AMA and ATVA. The AMA magnified these efforts through its "Kids Just Want to ide" campaign. To read more of what the AMA has done in its efforts to exempt kids' OHVs from the CPSIA, go to Aimed at children's toys, the CPSIA ensnared kids' dirtbikes and ATVs because trace levels of lead can be found in parts such as batteries and brake calipers. Other children's products were also affected by the CPSIA, such as books, clothes and microscopes. The CPSC, which is responsible for implementing the CPSIA, delayed enforcement of certain parts of the law until the end of this year, granting a reprieve for child-sized dirtbikes and ATVs. That gave those concerned about the law time to change it before the reprieve ended. 42 September 2011 A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota Inc.
