The Gardners of Massachusetts: An American Legacy By Anthony Taylor Dunn For most, the Gardner name does not easily come to mind as do such historic family names as Revere, Copley, or Kennedy. However, the Gardner name has an important place in American history spanning from the birth of our country to the present day. The First Governor of Massachusetts The Gardner family history dates back to early colonial America when Thomas Gardner sailed from England to Cape Ann in 1623, only three years after the arrival of the Mayflower. He was dispatched from Weymouth, England, by the Dorchester Company and was appointed as the overseer of the Plantation at Cape Ann. Unfortunately, this area proved to be unsuited for farming due to the predominantly rocky and unfertile soil. Those that remained did so to the hazard of their lives, and most died in the first three years. In 1626, the survivors of the colony under the direction of Roger Conant relocated to the mouth of the Naumkeag River and founded present day Salem. Yet the title of Massachusetts first governor belongs to Thomas Gardner because he was the first man of authority over what developed into the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Salem and the Witch Trials Thomas Gardner left nine children, two of which became prominent figures in their own rite. Samuel was born in 1627, one year prior to the official renaming of Naumkeag to Salem. He was a merchant by trade and built a corn mill in town. In later years he became a member of the board of selectmen and general court. Another son, George, married Elizabeth Stone who was the daughter of the Reverend Samuel Stone, a leading clergyman of the day. Their daughter married John Hathorne, the infamous witch judge who was the chief interrogator of the accused witches in the Salem witch trials of John Hathorne was the grandfather to author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

3 Per "History of Nantucket" by Alexander Starbuck in referring to the family of Richard Gardner and Sarah Shattuck stated....!she (Sarah Starbuck) had made herself obnoxious to the Massachusetts government by sympathizing with the Quakers, had been brought before the Salem Court for absenting herself "from the publik ordinances on the Lord's day, for neglecting to attend services at the First Church in Salem and for attending assemblies of the Friends, and had been excommunicated from the First Church in Salem for so doing. The widow Sarah was a woman of decided opinions and not inclined to mask them. Sarah, daughter of Richard and Sarah, married Eleazer Folger, son of Peter and when Peter was imprisoned during the "Insurrection," the Gardner family showed indignation and were arrested. They failed to appear at the Court held April 22, 1677 to which they were summoned but did appear at the Court next following with this result: 'Sarah, wife of Mr. Richard Gardner, being legally convicted of speaking very opprobriously and uttering many slanderous words concerning the imprisonment of Peter Folger who was imprisoned by order of the court, upon her good demeaning herself, and civilly being to the good satisfaction and likeness of the court, the Court think fit to remit all other fines provided by law in such case, but she shall be reproved and admonished to have care for the future of evil words tending to defaming His Majesty's Court.'" Gardner / Worth / Nantucket website The Gardner family of Nantucket descended from Richard and John Gardner, sons of Thomas Gardner, planter, who came from England to Salem, Massachusetts in Richard s wife, Sarah Shattuck, was the daughter of Thomas Gardner s second wife, Demaris Shattuck, by her first husband. She was a devoted member of the Society of Friends for which she suffered during her residence in Salem before she and her husband moved to Nantucket in 1666/1667. John and his wife, Priscilla Grafton, soon followed. The two brothers were originally in the fishing business but also began accumulating property. Their descendents became captains of whaling ships, land owners and merchants. Anna Gardner ( ), descended from John, had a distinguished career as a schoolmistress and reformer. She taught in Nantucket elementary schools and, after the Civil War, in the schools of the New England Freedman s Bureau in the south.. She was also active in the causes of temperance and women s suffrage. In 1841, she called the Anti-Slavery Convention in Nantucket. Anna Gardner also wrote two books of poems. William Edward Gardner ( ), Episcopal minister, historian and author, is particularly remembered in Nantucket for his biographies of Walter Folger, Jr., John Gardner, the Starbuck family, and the Coffin family. He also wrote memorials of Dr. Roy H. Gilpatrick, George Fawcett, Charles H. Selden, Frederick C. Sanford, Peter Folger and Moses Joy as well as Rambles in the Historic Nantucket District. 8 168 HISTORY OF NANTUCKET GARDNER The two brothers, Richard and John Gardner, sons of Thomas, were residents of Salem, before coming to Nantucket. They were probably both born In England, coming to America about Richard was the first to remove to Nantucket, where he was granted a half share March.2"2, , to exercise his trade as a "Seaman." His oldest son, Joseph, was a lso granted a half share February 15, 1667, to exercise his trade as a "Shoe Maker." Joseph's contract, under vote of the Town February 16, 1667, grants him "half a share of accommatition answarable to the other Tradesmen on conditions that he supply the occasions of the Island in way of a Shoemaker, and likewise that he shall not leve the Island in point of Dwelling for the Space of four years or if it so fall out that he shall remove off from the Island within the aforesaid Terme that he shall leave the said accomadation aforementioned to his brother Richard on the terms aforesaid that he supply the occasions of the Island as a Shoemaker." It is very probable that father and son removed in 1667 or 1668.* The Records show that at this time John Bishop, sold to Richard Gardner a tract of land at Wesco Pond. About the same time a grant of land was made to John Gardner. There seems, how ever, to be uo evidence that John removed to the Island until 1672 or 1673.t Mr. Worth says "His" (Richard's) "house lot was around Wesco now called Lily Pond, so irregular in form as to be called the "Crooked Record." His house was on the west end of Sunset Hill, where is now." (1901) "the residence of Eben W. Francis. He was Chief Magistrate in 1673 and held other Town offices. None of the old records are in his handwriting, from which it may be inferred that he was not educated. * * His house was probably the easternmost of that day. * * Joseph Gardner was constable, assessor and selectman each once. * * * He probably lived within the limits of the "Crooked Record." "John Gardner, called Capt. Gardner, married Priscilla Grafton. He died in 1706, 82 years old, and left a widow and 12 children. His house lot was on the north side of the road which is now called North street, and included 30 acres, and extended from the road to the Cliff. It was west of the Hamblin house.":t Richard Gardner Senior married Sarah Shattuck, daughter of Samuel. Their children were: I, Joseph; U, Sarah W, Richard (born October 23, 1663); lv, Deborah, (born December 12, 1658): Mr. Worth says in 1665 (Land and!ja.nd Owners p. 68). ts. Baring Gould in "Family Names a nd Their Story" says "The name (Gardner) is French; we may conclude, therefore, that the Ang lo-saxons had no gardens, only orchard::s. 'l'he surname is often spelled Gardiner and Gardner, a lso Ja\'dine.'' (p 108). Patronymica Britannica says of the name-"its principal modern forms are Gardiner, which according to Camden's joke d enotes the gentleman, and the more plebeian Gardner. Gardener itself is rare.'' *"Land and Land Owners" pp Gardner makes Sarah the third and Richard the second child. (Thomas Gardner, Planter, pp ).

Their children were-i, John; born February 20, 1654; ii, Joseph born July 8, 1655; iii, PrisciJla born November 6, 1656; who Savage thinks had married John Arthur in Salem, but her husband having died she followed her father to Nantucket; iv, Benjamin, born February 3, 1658 (died young); v, Uachel, born August 3, 1661, who married first John Brown and second James Gardner her cousin; vi, George, born- -; died 17th, 2d mo. 1750, married Eunice Starbuck, daughter of Nathaniel and Mary; \ ii, Dcnjamin, born May 17, 1664; viii, Ann, born February 20, 1667, who married Edward Coffin, son of Peter Jr. and Abigail; ix, Nathaniel, born September 24, 1668; and x, 1\:lary, born May 27, 1670, who married (1686) Jethro Coffin, son of Peter.t About 1672 h e removed to Nantucket and there had xi, l\lebitable, born November 24, 1674, who married (August 14, 1704) Ambrose Dawes; and xii, Ruth, born January 26, 1676, who married (19th, 3 mo. 1692) James Coffin, son of James and Mary. In his will, probated October 2, 1706, he mentions his wife, one son only-xiii, George-- and six daughters, so it is likely his other sons did not come to the Island. Also a grandson John Gardner to whom h e devises land and his lh of a watermill in Salem. He m entions l an d, stock, cattle.', He., on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.
