Chapter 4 of The Kenyons of Cattaraugus County NY Ancestors of Erastus and Amy (Kenyon) Champlin Richard L. Kenyon 32 Almond Tree Ln, Irvine CA rlkenyon@cox.net June 6, 2012, updated Dec 17, 2014 Introduction Erastus and Amy (Kenyon) Champlin moved to Cattaraugus County from Rhode Island in 1860, and lived there in Napoli the rest of their lives. This chapter covers their Kenyon, Champlin, and Mayflower ancestors. Erastus and Amy and their descendants for several generations were covered in Chapter 3. Both Amy and Erastus are descendants of the John Kenyon who came from England and first appears in Rhode Island records in Amy is a descendant of Mayflower passenger George Soule, and so is Erastus. Erastus ancestor Joseph Champlin fought in the Revolutionary War. Part 1: The Kenyon Ancestors We start with the first Kenyon ancestor to arrive in America from England. John Kenyon: John Kenyon was born about 1657 in England. His parents are unknown. His first documented appearance in Rhode Island is in a 1687 Kingstown tax record. He married a daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Sherman) Mumford whose given name is unknown. He had a farm in Kingstown on land that he received from his father-in-law Thomas Mumford. He made out his will June 12, 1732, and died shortly afterward in Westerly, Washington Co, RI. His will was proved June 26, The 1935 genealogy American Kenyons by Howard Kenyon erroneously claimed that John married Anna Mumford and was the son of a James Kenyon who was born in 1633 in England and who married May 2, 1654, Ester (daughter of John Smith). This has been conclusively proven wrong by recent research. See Chapter 24 for complete information. The children of John Kenyon are named in his will: i. John: b 1682 ii. James: b iii. Enoch iv. Joseph v. Samuel vi David: b 1693 vii Jonathan: b Ancestors of Amy (Kenyon) Champlin Page 1

GENERATION 2: JOHN KENYON John Kenyon (son of John, generation 1) was born in England at an unknown date. He died prior to June 1, 1747 when his estate was probated in Charleston, RI. In July 1704, he married Elizabeth Remington, daughter of John and Abigail (Richmond) Remington. Elizabeth was born in Richmond, RI in 1685 and died in July John and Elizabeth had ten children: John (1706), Thomas (1708), Sylvester (1710), George (1712), Sarah (1715), Mary (1717), Elizabeth (1720), Samuel (1722), Abigail (1746), and Benedict (1735). At this point, the lineages of Erastus and Amy diverge. Amy is descended from John Kenyon s last son Bennedict Kenyon, while Erastus is descended from John Kenyon s third son Sylvester. 5 Amy s Kenyon ancestors GENERATION 3 BENEDICT KENYON Benedict was born in 1735 in Richmond, RI, and died at age 71 on Apr 10, 1807 in Richmond. On May 29, 1760, in Richmond, he married Amie Barber, daughter of Samuel and Anne (Corey) Barber. Amie was born in Richmond, RI, Nov 28, She died at age 60 in Richmond on Jun 1, She is buried in the Benedict Kenyon lot in Richmond, probably alongside her husband. Children Edie (1760), Samuel (1762), Remington (1764), Silas (1766), Benedict (1768), John (1771), Corey (1773), Amie/Anne/Amy (1774), Betsy (1778), Mary (1780), George (1783). His first wife was Sarah Record, whom he married about His second wife, and the mother of his known children, was Waitey Moor/Moon, daughter of George and Waitey Moor, and widow of Jared Barber. Waitey s dates are unknown. Their children are Whitman (1802), John (1803) Benedict (1806), Silas (1812), Deborah (1813), Sarah (1818), Amy Ann (1829), Cory (1833), and an infant. GENERATION 5 AMY ANN KENYON Erastus Kenyon ancestors GENERATION 3: SYLVESTER KENYON Sylvester was born Apr 7, 1710, in North Kingstown, Washington Co, RI. He died at age 89 on May 3-9, 1899, in Oneco (Sterling) CT. On Apr 7, 1740 he married Anna Barber, daughter of Moses and Susannah (West) Barber. Children: Giles (ca. 1740), Sylvester (ca. 1742), John (1744), Paul? (ca. 1750), Abigail (ca. 1755), Moses (1759), son? (ca. 1761). GENERATION 4: JOHN KENYON John was born in RI at an unknown date. He died prior to the proving of his will Aug 8, He lived in Sterling, CT. In RI he married Anne, whose maiden name may have been Kenyon (Rhode Island Marriage records list an Ann Kenyon who married a John Kenyon Apr 24, 1764, but It is not clear if these are our subjects or other people with similar names). Anne s birth date is unknown. She survived her husband. Children: Mary (1772), John (1776), Lewis (-?-), George (-?-), Sylvester (-?-), Almy (-?-), Nancy (-?-), Abigail (-?-), Cynthia (-?-). 6 Champlin. He was born in Charleston, RI. He was a Revolutionary War veteran. He died in 1850 at South Kingston RI at an age of about 93. See the Champlin Ancestors section for more detail on Joseph. They had 12 children: Samuel (1785), Phoebe (1788), Mary Polly (date unknown), Joseph (1792), Amey (1797), George Hazard (1799), Nancy (-?-), Abigail (-?-), John Kenyon (1800), Elizabeth (1805), Frances Gardiner (1806), and Alice (1808). GENERATION 6: ERASTUS CHAMPLIN Part 2: Champlin Ancestors We start with the first Champlin ancestor to arrive in America from England: Jeffrey Champlin. GENERATION 1: JEFFREY CHAMPLIN Goeffrey/Jeofrey/Jeffrey Champlin came from England and is first recorded in 1638 in village of Pocasset, on the island of Aquidnick. Pocasset was renamed Portsmouth, and the island of Aquidnick was renamed Rhode Island and is a part of the present state of Rhode Island (the actual name of the State of Rhode Island is Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations ). Jeffrey settled first at Pocasset (now Portsmouth) on the north end of the island. Pocasset was founded by Anne Hutchison and her small group of religious libertarians. The next year, he was part of the group that moved to the south end of the island and founded the city of Newport. He was admitted as an inhabitant of the island Nov 24, 1638, and was made a freeman on Sep 14, During the Revolution, the records of Newport were destroyed, and thus there is no way to be certain of Jeffrey s marriage(s). Circumstantial evidence leads Champlin genealogists to believe that he may have been married twice, first in England, and second in Newport. His first wife probably died prior to His second wife was the mother of his children. Her name was probably Eulalia Vladi Garde, daughter of John and Rebecca (Copp) Garde. His first wife may have also been a member of Garde family. In 1661 Jeffrey moved, with many others, to Misquamakuut (now Westerly) on the mainland. He was forced to flee to Newport in during King Philips War, a very bloody conflict between the English and Native Americans. King Phillip was the English name for the main leader of the Native American tribes, who were struggling to survive in the face of the constantly expanding English population. Jeffrey was active in civic affairs, including moderator of the Westerly Town Meetings from , and Deputy in the Rhode Island State Assembly from He bought and sold land frequently Jeffrey had three known children: Jeffrey (born about 1650), William (born 1654) and Christopher (born about 1656). Jeffrey is believed to have been buried with 4 Ancestors of Amy (Kenyon) Champlin Page 4

his son William in the family cemetery located on William s farm, and known today as Westerly Historical Cemetery #3. GENERATION 2: CHRISTOPHER CHAMPLIN Christopher was born at Newport Rhode Island on Sep He died at at age 75 in Westerly, RI, on Apr 2, Christopher married prior to 1684, but the name and dates of his wife have not survived. They had six children: Christopher (1684), John (1686), William (1687), Jeffrey (1689), Joseph (1690), and Mary Ann (1692). In 1721 or 1722, Christopher married 2nd Elizabeth Davol, widow of Capt. William Davol (spelling varies). They had one child: William Davol. Christopher Champlin was elected to the Westerly Town Council in 1693, appointed constable in in 1698, and was elected to the Rhode Island General Assembly in 1706, and in 1707 was a Deputy representing Westerly. GENERATION 3: WILLIAM CHAMPLIN William Champlin was born in Westerly in 1687 and was still alive as late as William married Joanna, whose maiden name may have been Watson. She died sometime between 1760 and They had 6 children: William (about 1720), Michael (about 1723), John (about 1727), Elijah (about 1729), Dorcas (about 1732), and Temperance (about 1738). William was a farmer and cordwainer (leather worker) who as of 1760 owned 244 acres of land in Charleston. GENERATION 4: ELIJAH CHAMPLIN On Dec 10, 1760 William Champlin deeded land in Charleston to My son Elijah. Elijah was born about 1730 at South Kingston. He died in South Kingston between Jan 14, 1779, when he made out his will, and Feb 19, 1779 when it was proved. Elijah married Phoebe Card of South Kingston on Nov 27, She was born about 1727 and died Feb 19, She was probably the daughter of Job and Judith (Greenman) Card. Elijah and Phoebe had eleven children: Phoebe (about 1750), Jeffrey (about 1753), Elijah (1756), Joseph (1758), William (1759), Mary (1760), Hannah (about 1762), Amey (1764), Anna (1766), Elizabeth (1768), and Alice (1770). GENERATION 4: JOSEPH CHAMPLIN Joseph Champlin was born in Charleston, RI, between 1756 and He died at in his early 90 s in 1850 in South Kingston, RI. He was a farmer. He married Nancy Kenyon, daughter of John and Anne Kenyon of Richmond, RI. Nancy s dates are unknown, but she apparently died before her husband. 4 Ancestors of Amy (Kenyon) Champlin Page 5

Joseph and possibly Nancy are buried in the Old Kenyon Burial Yard (Historical Cemetery HP05 at Hopkinton. They had 12 children: Samuel (1785), Phoebe (1788), Mary Polly (-?-), Joseph (1792), Amey (1797), George Hazard (1799), Nancy (-?-), Abigail V. (-?-), John Kenyon (1800), Elizabeth (1805), Frances Gardiner (1806), and Alice (1808). Joseph fought in the Revolutionary War on 5 occasions, including one enlistment in which he was shipwrecked off the coast of Virginia and nearly perished. During another enlistment he fought at Howland s Ferry Bridge during the Battle of Rhode Island, which was an attempt to retake the island of Rhode Island from the British invaders. Joseph was granted a pension at age 75 on Aug 16, 1833, for his service in the Revolutionary War. GENERATION 5: SAMUEL CHAMPLIN Samuel Champlin was born in South Kingston, Washington Co, RI, on Dec He died at age 89 in South Kingston on Apr 16, Samuel was a farmer and fisherman. On Dec 23, 1810, Samuel married Elizabeth Babcock, daughter of Simon Cyrus Babcock and Hannah Champlin, a third cousin once removed (see chart below). Elizabeth was born in Stonington, CT, on Mar 14, 1790 and died in South Kingston at the age of 38 on Oct 3, Jeffrey Champlin 2 Christopher Champlin 3. William Champlin 3. Christopher Champlin 4. 10 Questions, Corrections and Additions I welcome questions, corrections and additions. I can be contacted at the or postal address at the top of page 1. Acknowledgements Special thanks to Robert Champlin for sharing his definitive knowledge of Champlin genealogy I am indebted to Richard Reid Kenyon of Huntington Beach, CA, for the education in Kenyon genealogy that I got from him when I was getting started. For the present project, he gave me a copy of the unpublished supplement to Howard Kenyon s American Kenyons that was of great importance in tracing the Kenyon Ancestors of Amy. Nancy Waterhouse obtained copies for me of documents from the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake. I am very grateful to the above persons, who made it possible for me to prepare this document. Kenyon Ancestor Sources Sources Sources for John Kenyon #1: See Chapter 24, The First Kenyons in America For John Kenyon s descendants, the following sources were used: The books by Wright, Harding and Throop are scholarly works based on cited original sources. The books by Kenyon are mostly based on original sources, but many of the sources are not cited, and they do not reflect was has been learned in later years. Howard Kenyon, 1935, American Kenyons Howard Kenyon, 1958, The Author s Supplement to American Kenyons and English Connections. This is an unfinished manuscript from the estate of the author. Copy from Richard Reid Kenyon of Huntington Beach William Wright, 1993, Ancestors and Descendants of William Browning Greene. The early Rhode Island Kenyon s are included. Anne Borden Harding, Mayflower Society 1980, Mayflower Families Through Five Generations, Volume 3. Louise Walsh Throop, Mayflower Society, 2006, George Soule of the Mayflower, and his Descendants in the Fifth and Sixth Generations. 4 Ancestors of Amy (Kenyon) Champlin Page 8

Louise Walsh Throop, Mayflower Society, 2008, George Soule of the Mayflower, and his Descendants in the Fifth and Sixth Generations. John Kenyon, generation 2: The best account is Wright 1993, family KE4, based on cited original sources and thorough research. The original account is Kenyon 1935, ID 11, but the baptismal date is wrong (see Wood 2004). Sylvester Kenyon, generation 3, son of John Kenyon. The best account is Throop 2006, family 172. Also included in Kenyon 1935, ID113, and in Wright 1993 as child iii of KE4. John Kenyon, generation 4, son of Sylvester. The best source is Harding This is part of a series that is currently being superceded by the new series Mayflower Families in Progress, but the volume including John has not yet been published. John is not included in Kenyon 1935, but does appear in Kenyon John s wife s given name is known to be Nancy from deeds. Her maiden name is said to be Kenyon, apparently based on Arnold, Vital Record of Rhode Island , Vol 4, Newport, Part II: Ann Kenyon married John Kenyon Apr 24, 1764 by Rev Gardner Thirston, Newport RI. There were so many John Kenyons in Rhode Island that it is not clear that these are our subjects. Nancy Kenyon, generation 5, daughter of John. Same sources as for John Kenyon generation 4. She also appears in the research on her husband Joseph Champlin shared by Champlin genealogist Robert Champlin (see Champlin sources). Samuel Champlin, generation 6, son of Nancy and Joseph. See the Champlin section for sources. Benedict Kenyon, generation 3, son of John and Elizabeth. The best sources are Throop 2008, family 708, and Wright 1993, family KE 12. Benedict also appears in Kenyon 1935 as ID 116. Corey Kenyon, generation 4, son of Benedict. The best source is Throop 2008, family 708, child vii. Benedict also appears in Wright 1993 as family KE 12, child vii, and in Kenyon 1935 as ID Ancestors of Amy (Kenyon) Champlin Page 9

Champlin Sources Not being a Champlin genealogist, and unable to find a published Champlin genealogy, let alone an authoritative one, I was delighted to find a first rate Champlin genealogist: Robert Champlin of Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. His work is based almost entirely on original sources. He was preceded by William Hunter of Canada who, among other things, visited all of the town clerks in Rhode Island and Connecticut over the years, and copied all of their birth, marriage and death records forchamplin. His files were passed along to Robert Champlin. Robert Champlin s research is unpublished at the present time, but he generously sent me copies from his manuscript. I also consulted published Champlin research, but concluded that there were too many problems with old errors, and incomplete and second-hand information, so that it would be misleading to cite them. Robert Champlin does know the source of every fact, and his manuscript contains far more detail than could be included here. Interested persons can easily contact him via the Champlin page of the website GenForum. Mayflower Sources The general society of Mayflower Descendants has published a series of books that document the Mayflower Descendants through six generations, based on professional research using cited original sources. The volumes used for the Mayflower Ancestors of Erastus and Amy are: Anne Borden Harding, 1980, Mayflower Families Through Five Generations, Vol. 3, George Soule. Louise Walsh Throop, 2006, Mayflower Families in Progress, George Soule of the Mayflower and his Descendants for Four Generations. Louise Walsh Throop, 2008, Mayflower Families in Progress, George Soule of the Mayflower and his Descendants in the Fifth and Sixth Generations, Part Five. The Mayflower Society is currently at work updating all of its research, publishing it as completed in series called Mayflower Families in Progress edited by Louise Walsh Throop. All of the data for generations 1 through 4 was taken from Throop 2006, and the data for generations 4 and 5 was taken from Throop 2008, except for John Kenyon, who is discussed in the following Appendix: Appendix: John Kenyon The ancestors of Amy are reasonably well documented in published scholarly research, with the exception of John Kenyon, This John Kenyon does not even appear in American Kenyons. His sole appearance in a published genealogy is in Mayflower Families Through Five Generations, Volume 3, 1980, edited by Anne Borden Harding. This book is being superceded by a new series, 4 Ancestors of Amy (Kenyon) Champlin Page 10

Mayflower Families in Progress: George Soule, edited by Louise Walsh Throop, but this has not yet progressed to include the subject John Kenyon. Howard Kenyon, the author of American Kenyons, prior to his death on January 1, 1958, was at work on a supplement to American Kenyons, titled The Author s Supplement to American Kenyons and English Connections. The supplement does include the subject John Kenyon. A copy of this document was provided by Richard Reid Kenyon of Huntington Beach. The applicable paragraphs are reproduced below. A Commemorative Biographical Record of Tolland and Windham Counties, Connecticut, by J. H. Beers, 1903, indicates that John Kenyon (1134) was the son of John Kenyon (1111) of Exeter, R.I. and Freelove Reynolds. This is clearly incorrect, since John Kenyon (11111) moved to Oswego, N.Y., where he was a pensioner for services in the Revolutionary War and where he made extensive affidavits relative to his identity and his war service. The author of this work erroneously assumed that the 1790 census for John Kenyon (1134) was the record of John Kenyon (167) who was reported in Hoosick, N.Y., 1790, since the latter John executed a deed in Voluntown to land in Rhode Island, which land transaction clearly identified the owner. However, there is no [other] record that John Kenyon (167) ever lived in Voluntown and it is clear that John Kenyon (1134) was first deeded land in Voluntown in 1778 and died there with a will. He was deeded land in Richmond, R.I., by his father, Sylvester Kenyon (113) in His mother, Anne, signed the conveyance. In the census in Rhode Island of 1774, he and his brother, Giles, were listed jointly as heads of two families living together [in] Exeter. He made no claim for Revolutionary War service. He cannot be identified as being listed on the military census of He may have moved. In the deed to land 4 Ancestors of Amy (Kenyon) Champlin Page 11

from Peleg Kenyon of Voluntown, 1775, 100 acres, it recited that John was from Exeter, R.I. He bought four other pieces of land in Voluntown and in 1793 sold 16 acres to his brother, Moses Kenyon (1136). The son, Lewis Kenyon (11341), was willed the farm bought from Jeremiah Babcock. George got one half the land purchased from Peleg Kenyon; Sylvester got the other half. One of his sons had a daughter named Phoebe. No identity of his wife is disclosed on his land transactions in Connecticut. He was shown in the census of 1790 and in successive census reports prior to his death. [A handwritten note appears at this point in the typewritten manuscript: Note error on m. of Anne Kenyon. It appears to have been entered at the same time the wife of John Kenyon (1134) was added. The handwriting in these two cases is different (not as neat as elsewhere). The reason for his comment is unclear. RRK] 4 Ancestors of Amy (Kenyon) Champlin Page 12
