1 JAMES FARM JOURNAL Published by the Friends of the James Farm VOLUME 25, ISSUE 2 SPRING 2014 THE JESSE JAMES NAME IS EVERYWHERE Jesse lends his name, from clothing to alcohol, food, streets and parks Google just the two words: Jesse James, and you will get 161 million hits on a man that died 132 years ago. Our website, appears ninth on the Google search, and to my great surprise, one of my Jesse-related blogs, Jesse James lived by the gun and dies by the gun, was 12th on the same search. Jesse seemed to love the media coverage of his exploits and would likely have fit into today s world of the Internet: social media, quick news, videos and all of its instant gratification. He still seems larger than life and the mere mention of his name can spark either great respect or a sour, he s no hero. Indeed, Jesse still has his fans and his detractors. Included in his popularity is the branding of his name onto products and memorabilia. Any Jesse James fan coming to the farm/ museum always stops into the gift shop to look for a little something relating to the James brothers, their family or the war. We can t resist the pull of a T-shirt with Jesse s likeness on it, maybe a farmhouse photo, a few postcards, historical books, or other souvenirs relating to the outlaws and the Civil War. I know I wear my purple Jesse T-shirt Jesse James is the only American bandit who is classical, who is to this country what Robin Hood or Dick Turpin is to England, whose exploits are so close to the mythical and apocryphal. Carl Sandburg (American writer and three-time Pulitzer Prize winner) proudly and defy anyone to argue with me the importance of the James boys with regards to the local history of Missouri whether it be concerning the Civil War or their outlaw days. What no one can dispute is that 132 years after his death and 149 years after the Civil War ended, there is still a depth of fascination with Jesse James that no one could have predicted all those years ago. Even Zerelda seized upon the interest in Jesse s death and, allegedly (though not proven) sold pebbles from his grave to visitors restocking her supply from the nearby stream when she ran out. Frank gave tours to the farm for 50 cents and here we are, years later the James farm open for tours, a museum filled with artifacts and a gift shop loaded with memorabilia. But what about the other Jesse James branding that is out there? In one quick search online I found: James Gang BBQ James Gang Rib Rub Jesse James Bourbon Jesse James Outlaw Beer Jesse James Spiced Whiskey Jesse James Beef Jerky, complete with bullet hole Jesse James (and James family) T- Shirts Jesse James action figures (from the 1970s) Jesse James 3-ring binder, with picture of dead Jesse on it Jesse James necklace, with picture of dead Jesse on it Jesse James Outlaw Bourbon patch Jesse James hats, shirts and jeans Jesse James beads Then there is the sale of old and reproduction outlaw posters, Jesse James comic books, and assorted Jesse and Frank Continued on page 7 IN THIS ISSUE President s Message...2 English Primary School Children Learn About Jesse James...3 April Shoot Results & Photos Gardner Wins 2 Spur Awards...6 C.R. At least it is here in Missouri and for those of you who are still waiting don t despair Spring will arrive any second now. With the warmer temperatures, the board s thoughts have turned to the annual reunion. It is shaping up well and looks to be very exciting. We are doing a few things different this year. We will have our annual Friday, June 6, evening meet and greet at the Jesse James Bank Museum in Liberty. This is a very popular event with lots of fun and the swapping of stories. Good food and drink will be provided. Saturday, June 7, we will be at the James Farm to hear our own Scott Cole and Christie Kennard talk about how we were able to obtain the letters and sermons Rev. James wrote. They will also give some insight into the personality of Rev. James, Zerelda, their young children and their lives prior to Rev. James death. The letters and sermons are also on display in the James Farm Museum. Board Member Bryan Ivlow will speak on Civil War Weaponry and his talk will be followed by a presentation from Board Member Kevin Makel on Guns of the Gangster Era. Of course, everyone knows that the gangsters of the 20th century were influenced by the outlaws, Jesse and Frank James, of the 19th century! Guests will be on their own for lunch and the early afternoon hours. It s a perfect time to take a tour of the farm and museum too! Late afternoon we will be at Woodneath Mid-Continent Public Library in Kansas City/Liberty to tour the 1850s Woodneath Home connected to the library. A representative from the Midwest Geneaology Society will be on hand during the first 90 minutes in case you are wondering if you are truly related to the James or just need some help in finding a relative. A catered dinner will be served in a conference room at the library, after which Dan Pence will give a power point presentation on Rev. James Letters. Please mark your calendars and sign up for what is sure to be a fabulous reunion. Look for a registration form on page 10 of this newsletter. Copies of the Rev. James letters are displayed in a book, set up on the table at bottom left. Several informative talks about the letters, Rev. James and the migration west to California, will be given during the annual reunion, June 6 and 7. (Photos by Liz Johnson) 2 Friends of the James Farm

3 English Primary School Children Learn About Jesse James Nobody should be forgotten I am very lucky in that I work in a school that is open to ideas. So, when I approached our head teacher to ask if we could have a Wild West Week, the answer was... yes! I must admit, I was delighted and surprised at the same time and immediately set about planning and organizing a week full of activities and learning inspired by the West for our 460 children from the ages of three to eleven. We decided that each year group would learn about an iconic figure from the West. For our youngest children that meant Little Hiawatha, John Smith and Pocahontas; for our younger children, Lewis and Clark and Sitting Bull; for our older children, Theodore Roosevelt, Sacagawea, Wyatt Earp and Jesse James; and for our oldest children, George Armstrong Custer and our very own, Grey Owl. To add a little extra excitement, we decided to add Buffalo Bill as a whole school learning challenge after we discovered he had visited our town with his Wild West Show in 1903, and as the week rather conveniently included April 3, we decided the Pony Express should be a focus as well. Our year five children (nine year olds) were therefore given the task of researching Wyatt Earp and Jesse James, affectionately referred to during the week as our outlaw/lawman group. It was an interesting start. When I asked Hollie what she knew of Jesse she said she had never heard his name before and knew nothing about him. When I asked Danni, she said she had seen a reward poster with his name on it during the whole school assembly launch of the week and so thought he must have done something bad. Jack reckoned he was a criminal but couldn t recall why. This was great! There was going to be a lot of learning going on! At the beginning of the week, the classes spent some time on the computers finding out information about Jesse and the times he lived in. This research served to change Jack s mind somewhat. I found out that he is a folk hero, he said, because of what he did. And that changed how I felt about him. When asked how this had changed his ideas, Jack explained, Well, Jesse didn t like the way the South was being treated so he retaliated in a way he thought was right, but Pictured are just a few examples of the artwork students at Wild West Week created. Clockwise from top: A letter to the Sheriff describing the man who stole the marbles from the classroom; a Jesse James Wanted Dead or Alive poster; and a Wanted poster for the marble thief $10,000 reward! (Photos courtesy of Michelle Pollard) others didn t. When asked if he knew any more about the crimes Jesse had committed he said he did, he robbed banks and trains. After her research, Hollie wasn t taken in at all by the folk hero theory. Her first, and lasting impression is that Jesse was a bad person. He stole things, robbed! It was nice he was taking from the rich people and giving it to the poor, if he did do that, but sometimes people got killed, she asserted. He needed a better reason. On Wednesday of our Wild West Week, a thief stole the marbles in year 5, causing mass hysteria. All the adults found it fascinating how the story changed through the morning. What actually happened was a man, known to staff but not the children walked into each of the classrooms, picked up their marble jars (part of a class reward system) and ran out with them. He did not push over the class teacher, as was later reported. He did not Continued on page 8 Friends of the James Farm 3

Since 1953, Western Writers of America ( Shot All To Hell: Jesse James, the Northfield Raid, and the Wild West's Greatest Escape Author Mark Lee Gardner won several Spur Awards including one for his book Shot All To Hell, about the Northfield Raid, in the Best Western Nonfiction, Historical Category. org) has promoted and honored the best in Western literature with the annual Spur Awards, selected by panels of judges. Awards, for material published last year, are given for works whose inspiration, image, and literary excellence best represent the reality and spirit of the American West. The 2014 Spur winners and finalists will be honored during WWA s annual convention, June in Sacramento, Calif. For more information, visit: ernwriters.org/2014/03/2014- spur-awards-announced/ The book can be purchased at the James farm gift shop. LINKS Midwest Genealogy: Mid-Continent Public Library Woodneath Branch: 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Albany: Civil War Roundtable of Kansas City: LINKS Author C.R. Monroe will be signing his new book A Trail Revisited during the June 14 Old West Revolver Shoot from 8 a.m. to noon The story brings the reader to the Western frontier during the post-civil War era. Robin, a half breed Texas Ranger, was living and working on the huge BBC ranch after being reunited with his father. While there he received a letter from friends who had aided him in the past, requesting his help with a rustling problem in Missouri. He and a friend left the Northwest Territory as early as possible in order to avoid the snows of winter and to return the favor. They were both completely unaware that they would become embroiled in a conflict between a power hungry, brilliantly devious madman who was attempting to gain control of the small valley and the people that lived there. Before the surprising conclusion of this story you will find the Ranger and his friends required to face personal danger, conflicting moral decisions, love and all of its complexities, and difficult decisions to make between duty and loyalty. Not only will you find a diversity of characters, but also attempts to deal with the clash of cultures between the Sioux and Arapahoe Nations as the European population push themselves onto sacred hunting grounds in search of gold or land. These were hard times and hard men lived them, and after losing everything they owned at the close of the Civil War, many men would willingly kill if an opportunity to regain a place they can call their own presented itself. 6 Friends of the James Farm

7 JAMES BRANDING continued from page 1 James movies. People have been making money off of Jesse and Frank James since Jesse was killed in In fact, people allegedly took items from the house in St. Joseph where he was killed, before Zee had gathered her possessions together to take with her and those she intended to sell. It is even believed that people cut out pieces of the wooden floor in the St. Joseph house where Jesse lay dead and where his blood had seeped into the wood for souvenirs. Jesse James has been a moneymaking commodity for well over one-hundred years. Logos on products range from using Jesse s guerrilla photo to handsketched pictures of a man on a horse, vintage guns, and eagles all utilizing some kind of Old Western type font and Wild West motif. Of course, Jesse s name is often the logo itself. The branding of the outlaw has been unceasing for a very long time, catering to the tastes of those who are simply fans of Jesse or those who love everything about the Wild West. Then there are the places that pay homage to Jesse James by naming a place after him. In Kearney there is Jesse James Park, Jesse James Farm Road, the Jesse James Festival and the Jesse James Fairgrounds. In neighboring Excelsior Springs, there is a Jesse James Road and a Jesse James car dealership. Use of Jesse s name continues as well. Well-known celebrity, Jesse James, owner of West Coast Choppers, was born Jesse Gregory James, but uses the more famous moniker professionally. He also claims to be related to the real Jesse James through his great-grandfather s cousin. There are historical tours in Missouri that encompass the life and times of Jesse and Frank James. These can include visits to the Patee House in St. Joseph, where the house in which Jesse was killed is located; the original site of that home, where there is a memorial; the farmhouse and museum in Kearney; Jesse s burial site in Kearney; the Jesse James Bank Museum in Liberty; the 1859 Jail, Marshal s Home and Museum, where Frank was incarcerated in Independence; there are even tours to several of the buildings where the James Gang allegedly robbed banks. Richmond, Mo., regularly holds an Outlaw Days each fall, which includes a reenactment of the robbery allegedly committed by the James-Younger gang on May 22, Northfield, Minn., where the botched Northfield Bank robbery took place on Sept. 7, 1876, and in which Jesse and Frank were the only men who escaped capture or death, holds a Defeat of Jesse James Days each year on the weekend following Labor Day. Interestingly, while the outlaws Jesse and Frank James earned a living robbing banks and trains, thousands of others have managed to make a pretty good living by using the men s history, likeness and names through branding, festivals, books, movies and more. The James boys, remembered as well today, 149 years after the Civil War ended, will continue to retain a sort of immortality for years to come. Pictured are just a few of the Jesse James branding materials and products: Clockwise from top: BBQ Sauces, Beer, Beef Jerkey, Necklace, Movie, Beer Label, Comic Book and Spiced Wiskey. Center: Another Beer logo and Bourbon Whiskey Patch. Friends of the James Farm 7

8 WILD WEST WEEK continued from page 3 kidnap a member of staff, steal one of the ponies on the field and jump over the fence, and he certainly wasn t carrying as many guns as was suggested. In fact, for obvious reasons, he wasn t carrying a gun at all! One child thought the thief must be Jesse James, but when another child said it couldn t be, because Jesse James is dead, the child replied, Well it must have been his grandson then! This haphazard spreading of the news soon turned serious when certain children started to question the apparent lack of security in the school and showed concern for the younger children, especially if our thief hadn t stolen a pony and was still hiding in the building. In history, this would have been when a posse was organized, and this was suggested but with the thief now heavily armed and possibly mounted, it was deemed too dangerous. The classes then talked about how they would let everyone know what had happened. They created reward posters, and became aware of how difficult it would be to catch their thief considering the fact that, by then, even they couldn t agree upon what he looked like! In the afternoon, I visited the classes to talk to them about Jesse James and the Civil War and by now they were eager to know more. When I asked them if they wanted the easy version, or the complicated version of Jesse s involvement in the Civil War, they all shouted, Complicated version! So into the 1821 Missouri compromise line I launched! We thought that when Kansas and Nebraska came onto the scene, there should have been a decision to make one of them southern and one of them northern, for that would be fair. We thought the idea of them voting was silly, and we predicted the problems that followed. But we also, when prompted, understood the value of that first move into the prairie and understood the reasons why the north didn t want the south progressing there. By drawing maps, explaining the divides, east, west, north and south, and all the time, having a little dot showing where the James family lived, it wasn t long before one of them pointed out, Jesse s house is right in the The reenactors are the Spearfish Creek Wild West Group dressed in period clothing, pictured with members of the English Westerners Society, including Michelle Pollard at far right. (Photo courtesy of Michelle Pollard) middle of it all. We talked about the Civil War, the aftermath of it and what it meant for southerners, we talked about the robberies and the possibility as to whether or not the morning s escapades had made them think about how difficult it was to catch, and even identify robbers even in an age of our technology. They wanted to know why Bob Ford had killed Jesse and what became of his children. We talked about the impact he had on history how laws had changed and bank buildings redesigned and Ty noticed that the likes of Wyatt Earp were needed because, in the Wild West, sometimes it takes a criminal to catch a criminal! As the week drew to a close, I asked Jack what he had made of it all. I was excited about the week, he said, the Stone Age, Prehistoric Era and the Wild West are three of my favorite subjects in history. I saw a Horrible Histories sketch on Jesse James ages ago, he recalled, and have a vague memory of it, but I know a lot more now. When I asked if there was anything else he wanted to know, he said, I want to know more about Jesse James. I think there s more to him than we learnt just in this week. Hollie still thinks Jesse is a bad person! I changed my mind a little bit, she said, when you said that other people might have used his name because he was famous; I thought he might not have done some of those things we thought he did. So, after researching him all week, I asked, do you think it s right that history remembers him, or should he perhaps be forgotten because he was a person who did bad things, whether he could explain why he did them or not? Hollie thought for a moment before saying it was a good question. I m not saying he should be forgotten, she pondered and then added, because he was quite an amazing character and then she trailed off. I sensed a but coming. But, basically She trailed off again. And she thought for some considerable time before finishing. No, she said, Don t write down any of what I just said. Nobody should be forgotten. Michelle Pollard is the author of Legends Born Where Men Die A Novel of Jesse James, and Witnesses to the Passing of a Legend, The Death and Burial of Jesse James. Michelle lives in England and is the Associate Editor for the English Westerners Society. 8 Friends of the James Farm
