1 Leader BIBLE STUDY Samuel had anointed Saul as king over Israel, but it wasn t long before Saul s disobedience led God to reject him as king. God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to meet Jesse and his sons. God had chosen one of Jesse s sons to be Israel s king. Jesse had many sons. Eliab was Jesse s oldest son. When Samuel saw Eliab, he thought, This must be the one God has chosen! Eliab was likely tall and good-looking. Why wouldn t God choose someone like that? But God doesn t make decisions like people do. Read what God said to Samuel in 1 Samuel 16:7. Jesse s sons took turns passing before Samuel, one by one. Samuel was probably eager to hear which son God had chosen to be Israel s next king! Abinadab? No, not him. Shammah? No. The Lord hasn t chosen this one either. Jesse had one more son; his youngest, David, was out tending the sheep. David came in and God said, This is he. Samuel anointed David, and the Spirit of the Lord took control of David. David was still a youth and was not yet king when he found himself at the battle where the Philistines had gathered to fight the Israelites. The story of David and Goliath is one of the most well-known accounts in the Old Testament. When the Israelites cowered in fear, David stepped up and defeated the enemy with just a sling and a stone. As you teach this week, help the kids relate to the Israelites. Apart from Christ, we are powerless before our enemies of sin and death. David reminds us of Jesus, the greatest hero, who came to save us. When we look to Jesus, He gives us salvation and eternal life. 1 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 11, Session 3 Copyright 2013

2 The BIBLE STORY David Was Anointed and Fought Goliath 1 Samuel Saul was not going to be king of Israel anymore. He had disobeyed God, and it was time for Israel to have a new king a better king. God told Samuel to visit a man in Bethlehem named Jesse. Jesse had eight sons. One of Jesse s sons would be Israel s king. Samuel did what God told him to do. He went to Bethlehem to meet with Jesse and his sons. Jesse s oldest son was tall and handsome. This must be the one God chose to be king, Samuel thought. Samuel, he s not the one, God said. Do not pay attention to what he looks like. You look at what you can see on the outside, but I see the heart. One by one, Samuel met Jesse s sons, but God had not chosen any of them. Do you have any more sons? Samuel asked. Yes, Jesse said. My youngest son, David, is in the field taking care of the sheep. Jesse sent for David. When David arrived, God told Samuel, He s the one! Samuel poured oil on David s head to show that God had chosen David to be the next king. Then Samuel went home. King Saul was bothered by an evil spirit. Saul s servants told Saul to find someone who could play the harp. Hearing beautiful music might make Saul feel better. One of Saul s helpers knew just the person to play the harp David, son of Jesse. Whenever Saul felt sad, David played his harp and Saul felt better. At this time, King Saul s army was getting ready to fight their enemies, the Philistines. The Israelites camped on one hill while the Philistines camped on another. There was a valley between them. The Philistines had a great warrior named Goliath. He was 9 feet 9 inches tall! He towered above the other men. Goliath picked on the Israelites. He wanted someone to fight him one-on-one. But none of the 3 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 11, Session 3 Copyright 2013

3 Israelites wanted to fight Goliath. They were afraid of him. David s three oldest brothers were with the Israelite army. David went to check on them and bring them some food to eat. David heard Goliath making fun of the Israelites, and he saw that everyone was too afraid to fight. Even though David was young, he volunteered to fight Goliath. You don t stand a chance against Goliath, King Saul said. I have killed wild animals, David said. God will keep me safe. King Saul let David fight Goliath. David didn t even wear any armor because it was too heavy. He chose five smooth stones from a nearby stream and met Goliath with only the stones and a slingshot. Goliath saw David and made fun of him because he was just a boy. You come to fight with a spear and sword, David replied, but I come to fight in the name of God! God always wins His battles! David ran toward Goliath. He slung a rock at Goliath, and the rock hit Goliath in the forehead. Goliath fell facedown, and David killed him. Christ Connection: The men in Israel s army were afraid of Goliath, the mighty Philistine warrior. Nobody would fight him. But God gave David power to beat Goliath. David reminds us of Jesus. Jesus came to save us from our biggest enemies: sin and death. Jesus is the hero who saves us so we can live with Him forever in heaven. * To tell the Bible story to younger preschoolers or for reviewing the story, use only the Bible story words in bold. 4 Saul and David

God gave David power to defeat Goliath. Key Passage: Psalm 51:10 Unit Christ Connection: God provided the first kings to rule His people Israel; Christ, the final King, rules over all people as Savior. Through David s family, God sent Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Large Group Bible Study (10 15 minutes) paper bags, 1 large and 1 small marker Timeline Map David Was Anointed and Fought Goliath video Bible Introduce the Bible Story Use a large brown paper bag to represent Goliath and a small lunch paper bag to represent David. Turn them upside down and print faces on them to make them into puppets. Say Two important things happened in today s Bible story. God sent Samuel to anoint a new king for Israel. And David, a shepherd boy, fought a real giant. Even though Goliath, the giant, was much larger and very scary, God was in control. [Hold up the paper bag puppets.] Who do you think would win the fight between these two? (David, of course. God was in control!) Watch or tell the Bible story Look at the timeline for the story God Rejected Saul as King, and ask why God didn t want Saul to be king any longer. (Saul did not obey God.) Look at the picture for this week; talk about the differences in weapons: Goliath had his heavy armor, and David had his sling and rocks. Show 1 Samuel 16 in your Bible. Watch (or listen to) the Bible story to learn whom Samuel anointed as king after Saul. 7 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 11, Session 3 Copyright 2013

6 Big Picture Question Poster Note for teachers: Remember that Bethlehem was the birthplace of Obed, grandfather of David. Later, Jesus was born in Bethlehem. God s plan was unfolding! Talk about the Bible story Say God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to meet Jesse. God had chosen one of Jesse s eight sons to be the next king. Samuel met seven of Jesse s sons. [Count 1 7.] They all looked good. What did God say about each one of them? ( not this one ) Where was Jesse s youngest son, number eight, David? (in the field, taking care of the sheep) God knew that David loved Him. God said that David would be the next king. How did Samuel show that God had chosen David as king? (He anointed David by pouring oil on his head.) King Saul s army was fighting the Philistines. What was scary about the Philistines? (the giant, Goliath) Every day, Goliath said, Send me a man so we can fight each other! He made fun of God. The Israelites were afraid of him. David volunteered to fight Goliath. David said to Goliath, I come against you in the name of God. Today, everybody here will see that He will win over you. How did David kill Goliath? (with a slingshot and a rock) Who gave David power to defeat Goliath? God gave David power to defeat Goliath. David reminds us of Jesus. Jesus came to save us from our biggest enemies: sin and death. Jesus is the hero who saves us so we can live with Him forever in heaven. Transition to Small Groups Describe the small-group activities you have prepared. Organize the activities so everyone does the same thing at the same time as a group, so small groups can rotate through each activity, or in centers which kids can visit as they choose. 8 Saul and David

7 lunch sacks markers or crayons Note: A wadi is a dry stream bed except during the rainy season when rains may cause flash floods. quick-drying clay dowel or unsharpened pencil toothpicks small cards or index cards markers Decorate a shepherd s bag Decorate a small lunch bag. Explain that David was a shepherd who stayed in the fields with his sheep and slept near them to protect them. Talk about what he might have kept in his bag. (food, sling, musical instrument perhaps) Read the passage about the weapons David chose for fighting Goliath. (1 Sam. 17:39-40) Say Saul wanted David to wear his own armor. I can t walk in these, David said, I m not used to them. So David took them off. Instead, he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the wadi and put them in the pouch, in his shepherd s bag. Then, with his sling in his hand, he walked toward the Philistine giant. Who gave David power to defeat Goliath? God gave David power to defeat Goliath. Make a key passage holder Instruct kids to form rock shapes from quick-drying clay; the rock should have a flat bottom. Press a dowel horizontally across the center of the rock, forming a place to stand a card. Kids may scratch designs into the clay using toothpicks. Print the key passage on a small card for each child (or print the passage on computer address labels to stick on cards). Prop the card in the rock holder. Remind kids that David used a rock as ammunition when he fought Goliath. Say Samuel s mother, Hannah, sang a song about God. She sang, And there is no rock like our God. You can think of that when you look at this rock! Who gave David power to defeat Goliath? God gave David power to defeat Goliath. 10 Saul and David

Take a bathroom break and wash hands. Serve the snack that your church regularly provides. If you did not do the activity Eat cheese, consider using it at snack time. Thank God for the snack food. Transition When a child finishes her snack and throws away her trash, she may select and examine a book or puzzle, color the Bible story coloring page, or work quietly at something of her own choosing. If she wants to draw on a journal page, suggest drawing the slingshot and the five stones or something that reminds her of the Bible story or the key passage. 12 Saul and David
