After leaving Southampton, England in 1842 the strong cultural ties of their new home to the British Isles were surely comforting. In the 1870 s, half of Utah s population consisted of British emigrants. 1 During the 1880's, an additional estimated 100,000 Britons emigrated to Utah. 2 As late as the turn of the century 22% of Utah population was from the British Isles. 3 In fact, three of the eleven families neighboring the Gatrells on 4 th East in the 1900 census had members born in Britain or born of British parents. 4 1 Hinckley Institute of Politics web site 09/23/06 2 Utah state government web site hecentury.html 09/23/06 3 Salt Lake City Corporation. 12/25/ Utah census A Family History of George Gatrell & Amelia Beckwith 1

3 And although Salt Lake City couldn t compare in size with Southampton, it was the largest metropolis the Gatrells had lived in since they left England 5. When they arrived in 1892, the city was equipped with electric lighting, telephones, and electric railway. However, they must have also been aware of one obvious difference: the Gatrells were not members of the dominant religion, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also known as Mormons. In the early days of Utah s settlement, nearly all of the residents were Mormons. That changed quickly after completion of the transcontinental railroad in Aided by a booming economy and mining industry, the population of Salt Lake City increased 116% between 1880 and 1890 from 20,800 to 44,800. City lot price s skyrocketed, doubling in price between 1886 and In 1890, when the Gatrells arrived, half of Utah s 45,000 residents were non-mormons. 6 The fast growth created significant tension between the Mormon and non-mormon community. The Episcopal church was the first non-mormon church to conduct continuous religious services in Utah 7, but it was still an obvious minority. Thomas Gatrell & Lucy Horwood George s parents, Thomas and Lucy, were married on November 29, 1836 in Bishops Waltham, Hampshire, England. 8 Lucy had lived her whole life in Bishops Waltham and the family settled there for several years. Their first child, Thomas, was born on January 11, 1838, but died within a month 9. In 1841, they were living in Bitterne, Hampshire where Thomas is listed as independent 10. The next year they moved to the small village of Totton, near Southampton, Hampshire, and Lucy gave birth to her second son, George on September 11, 1842, at 6:00 pm. Thomas began working as a grocer there. 11 In 1846, the family was living in Lymington, Thomas birthplace, and Thomas was again working as a grocer. Unfortunately, Lucy passed away just as George was approaching his 4 th birthday. She died from heart disease on 14 June 1846 at the young age of George is not listed with his father on the 1851 census 13, and may have been sent to live with relatives. 5 Salt Lake City population 1880 (20,768, #93 in the United States), 1890 (44,843, #63). Of course, New York has historically been the largest city in the US but the Gatrells were only there briefly on their way to Junction City, Kansas. 6 State of Utah. 12/25/06. 7 Arrival of the Episcopal Church in Utah, /20/ Church of England. 4 We know very little about George s father, Thomas. He was born in Lymington, Hampshire, England in In 1851, he is living at 125 High Street in Southampton with Henry and Harriet Shepherd, grocers. No occupation is listed. Because of the number of people living there, he may have been a lodger. 14 That is the last known record of him. Because he does not appear in the 1861 census, I believe he died before it was taken on April 7, In 1864 when George marries Amelia, he lists his father as deceased. 15 We know more about George s mother, Lucy. She was born in Bishops Waltham in 1811 to George Horwood and Catherine Prior. She had two older sisters: Hester, born 1808, and Johanna, born Her mother s family had lived in Bishops Waltham for over 100 years. She was christened and married in the same church as her mother, sisters, and grandmothers. Bishops Waltham Bishops Waltham is a beautiful village in the Meon valley of Hampshire. It was first settled by Saxons in the ninth century. The name comes from the Saxon words wald (wooden) and ham (village). In 904 King Edward the Elder gave the manor there to the Bishop of Winchester, and thus it became Bishops Waltham. The main industries were farming and wool. In 1136 Henry de Blois built a palace there. It was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell s troops during the Civil War, but many of the ruins still remain. From 1602 to the late 19 th century, Bishops Waltham had annual fairs providing a valuable trading center for all of Hampshire 1801 it had a population of 1,773, making it one of the larger villages in Hampshire. In 1805, 200 French sailors under the command of Admiral Villeneue were billeted (forced to remain) in the Barleycorn Inn after the Battle of Traflagar. In 1809 the Gunner family opened Bishops Waltham s first bank. 17 George Gatrell & Amelia Beckwith in Southampton On the 1861 census, George is boarding at 28 Oxford Street in Southampton, Hampshire. 18 He is working as an architect assistant. He continued to live in Hampshire for several years, and in 1868, he was working as a merchant clerk, living at 7 York Place, Northern Road. It was probably there in Southampton where he first met his wife, Amelia Beckwith, of 27 Orchard Place. They married 7 March 1868 in the Albion Chapel on Saint Mary Street in Southampton. George was 25 and Amelia, listed as a spinster Hampshire census 15 Certified copy of marriage record, George Gatrell and Amelia Beckwith. 7 March International Genealogical Index records at 17 Lambert, Tim. 09/23/ Hampshire census. 5 on the marriage record, was Thomas John Beckwith ( ) & Catherine Spudle ( ) Amelia Beckwith was the only child of Thomas John Beckwith and Catherine Spudle. She was born 15 April 1844 in Kingston, Surrey, England. 20 Catherine had a child, George Robert Burridge, from a previous marriage, who was nine years Amelia s elder. In 1851, George was living with Thomas, Catherine, and Amelia at 26 Canal Walk in Southampton. 21 George was a writing scholar and his birthplace is listed as Dorset, Poole. This is the only record of him. 22 By the time of the next census in 1861, George is 26 and it isn t surprising that he s no longer living with his parents. Thomas John Beckwith s life covered three continents and nearly 100 years. On 3 June 1809 he was born in Fort St. George, Madras, India. 23 (Madras is now known as Chennai.) He was the only son of a British army office, John Beckwith. His mother Catherine had previously been married to a Mr. Gibbs, but her maiden name is unknown. John and Catherine were married in Fort St. George on 23 April Both John and Catherine were born in England, and it s not clear why they were living in India. John was approximately 48 years old when he married Catherine and no longer enlisted in the army. i Her age is unknown. Thomas John Beckwith, August 4, The next available record of Thomas is the 1841 Hampshire census. He is boarding at Weston Green, in a hamlet called Ember & Weston, near Thames- Ditton in Surrey, England. He is working as a tailor. The next year, on October , 25 he married Catherine Spudle at St. Mary Lambeth church, right next to Lambeth Palace and across the River Thames from Westminster Palace. Today the building serves as the Museum of Garden History. Catherine s son George was 7 years old at the time. 6 Poole, England. 26 Her father, John Spurdle, was deceased at the time of her second marriage. Information about her parents, siblings, and first marriage remains a mystery. Amelia was born two years later, 15 April , while the family was living in Kingston, Surrey. Catherine is 41 years old at that time. The next record of the family is the 1851 Hampshire census. Thomas, Catherine, George, and Amelia are living at 26 Canal Street in Southampton. Thomas is now a journeyman tailor, and George is a writing clerk. Amelia is listed as scholar, although she is only 6 years old. This suggests that she may have received some formal education and that the family was well-to-do. St. Mary Lambeth In 1861, Thomas, Catherine, and Amelia are living at 7 Bernardt Street in Southampton. Thomas is a working tailor. The Beckwiths share the house with John and Mary Cox and their five children. Seven years later, Amelia marries George Gatrell. Lt. John Beckwith in the 79 th Regiment of Foot Amelia s paternal grandfather, John, was born sometime around 1760, most likely in Liverpool. On January 8, 1778, Liverpool received permission from King George III to raise and outfit a volunteer loyalty regiment. British forces were stretched thin, particularly in the West Indies and America, and the army was in desperate need for new recruits. The citizens of Liverpool raised money by subscription to create the 79 th Regiment of Foot, nicknamed the Royal Liverpool Volunteers. The total cost to the city was 2,951. Unlike regulars, volunteers enlisted for a period of three years, or until the end of the American rebellion. They also received a signing bonus of 1-1/2 guinea. British army volunteers had to meet the following requirements: Be at least 16 and no more than 50 years old Be at least 5' 6-1/2" tall Pass a physical examination from a surgeon and attest that he had "no Rupture, nor ever was troubled with Fits," and that he was in "no ways disabled by Lameness, or otherwise, but had the perfect use of his Limbs." 26 Cemetery records, Calhoun County, Michigan. 7 Declare that he was a Protestant. 28 Since John was a commissioned officer in a volunteer regiment, he probably had to meet these requirements as well. He purchased an ensign s commission in 1781 and made his way to the West Indies to meet up with the regiment. 29 During 1780, the Royal Liverpool Volunteers undertook a disastrous campaign in Nicaragua to seize St. John s Castle and control of the St. John River, which they believed led to the Pacific Ocean. Disease decimated the regiment. They evacuated late in John probably met up with them in Jamaica in 1781 or We know little of his activity between 1781 and 1784, but we know he was promoted to lieutenant. On September 3, 1783 the Treaty of Paris formally ended the revolution and recognized America s independence. The Royal Liverpool Volunteers sailed for Liverpool in 1784 on HMS James and disbanded soon after. John went on lieutenant half-pay on 6 September He continued to receive payments until 1832, when it is assumed he died. 30 John Spurdel Amelia s maternal grandfather was John Spurdel, a mariner. 31 He was probably born around 1780 and settled his family in Poole, Dorset. Poole is a large port on the southern coast of Britain. His daughter, Catherine, was born in Poole December 12, , just a year before the Battle of Trafalgar when Admiral Horatio Nelson, hero of the British empire, defeated Napoleon s navy. John could have been a marine, a navy sailor, or a commercial sailor. George & Amelia Beckwith Emigrate to America George and Amelia lived in Southampton for the first two years of their marriage. George worked as a surveyor. On November 25, 1868, they welcomed their first daughter, Lucy Horwood Gatrell, named after George s mother who had died when he was a young boy. Just over a year later, they welcomed another daughter, Catherine Harriett Gatrell on December 28, Catherine was also a family name, from Amelia s mother (Catherine Spudel) and paternal grandmother (Catherine Gibbs) and George s maternal grandmother (Catherine Prior) /23/ Army List 30 War Office record # , p Certified copy of marriage record, Thomas John Beckwith and Catherine Spudel. 18 October Cemetery records, Calhoun County, Michigan. 8 SS Rhein In March 1870, the young family left Southampton for the United States. Accompanying them is Amelia s father, Thomas John Beckwith, and, presumably, his wife Catherine. They sailed on the SS Rhein ii, a ship in the Norddeutscher Lloyd line, via Brehmen, Germany. A typical voyage on the SS Rhein from Southampton to New York lasted about two weeks. They arrived in New York City on March 28, There is some discrepancy about the arrival date because the Gatrells appear in Junction, Davis, Kansas on a census taken February 8, George is again working as a survey or and Thomas has found work again as a tailor. Catherine Spudel had joined the family. Junction was a major stop on the Kansas-Pacific railroad line, and most of the men in the to wn were railroad laborers. In March 1870 a line extension was completed between Salinas, Kansas and Denver, Colorado. The Pacific Railway Act of 1862 authorized railroad c ompanies to sell tracts of land to homesteaders. With jobs and land to spare, Kansas was an appealing place to European immigrants, and it s no su rprise the Gatrells hea ded there im mediately. 9 William George Gatrell, in Kansas City, Missouri. George Gatrell & Amelia Beckwith in Michigan Soon after the birth of William, the Gatrells moved to Michigan where George was hired as a court reporter in the fifth district judicial court. Before the days of audio recording, stenographers were highly-trained and richly-paid for their expertise. The Puttman form of stenography had recently been introduced to Europe and America, and was available through correspondence courses that could have been where George received his training. He worked as court reporter for the fifth district for 18 years. On August 19, 1874, George and Amelia were blessed with another son, Cyrus Grosvenor Gatrell. He was born in Jackson, Jackson, Michigan, about 30 miles from Marshall where the fifth judicial court was based. On December 29, 1876, Catherine Beckwith passed away. She was 72 years old and died of apoplexy, 34 meaning she died after a sudden loss of consciousness. She is buried in Oakridge Cemetery in Marshall, Michigan. 35 Three additional children came to the family in the following years while they lived in Marshall: Phillip K Gatrell (13 January 1877), Arthur Beckwith Gatrell (11 September 1878), and Winnifred Westbrook Gatrell (28 June 1880). Tragically, the family s oldest son, William George Gatrell, died from inflammation of the bowels on July 22, 1887, in Marshall, Calhoun, Michigan. His death record lists him as a 15-year-old student. 36 Phillip died October 28, 1881, at the age of 4 from diptheria. 37 They are also buried in Oakridge Cemetery in Marshall, Michigan, along with their maternal grandmother Catherine Beckwith. 38 The 1890 Michigan census is incomplete, so the Gatrells are not listed. However, we know that George was working as a court reporter, and probably making a comfortable living. Sometime in August 1891, George accepted new employment as a court reporter for the 34 Death records, ; Death index Calhoun County (Michigan). County Clerk (Main Author). FHL film # /30/09. 10 Utah territory. He probably got the job through Judge James A. Miner, a judge from Marshall who was appointed judge of Utah territory in Judge Miner went on to become the first chief justice of Utah. At that time, judges were free to appoint all the officers of their court, including court reporter, so Judge Miner probably offered George a position in his new court in Utah. The Ogden Standard Examiner printed this statement on August 19, 1891, presumably first published in the Daily Chronicle of Marshall, Michigan: Mr. Gatrell is the most proficient shorthand writer we have ever had any acquaintance with, and we are certain he will be greatly missed in our court. We wish him in his new field that success to which 39 iii his ability entitles him. Marshall, Calhoun, Michigan Marshall, the seat of Calhoun County, was settled in 1830, about 40 years before the Gatrells arrived. Early in its development, it was a relatively large and prosperous community, as evidence by its bid in 1847 to become Michigan s capitol. Lansing won the bid, but today Marshall is recognized as one of the most beautiful historic towns in the United States. It has one of the nation s largest historical landmark districts, including over 850 historical homes, and is often called one of the best examples of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American architecture. 40 Marshall was also home to controversial event regarding runaway slaves that led to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850: In 1843, Adam Crosswhite and his family ran away from David Giltner's plantation near Carrollton, Kentucky because Crosswhite learned that his four children were to be sold. The Crosswhites made the tough journey north and finally settled in Marshall. On the morning of January 2, 1847, the slave catchers and a local deputy sheriff were pounding on Adam's door. His neighbors heard the noise and came running. The cry of "slave catchers!" was yelled through the streets of Marshall. Soon over 100 people surrounded the Crosswhite home. Threats were shouted back and forth. One of the slave catchers began to demand that people in the crowd give him their names. They were proud to tell him and even told him the correct spelling. Each name was written down in a little book. Finally, the deputy sheriff swayed by the crowd's opinion, decided he should arrest the men from Kentucky instead. By the time the slave catchers would post bond and get out of jail, the Crosswhites were on their way to Canada. Next the Giltners went to the federal court in Detroit. They sued the crowd from Marshall for damages. Since they had many of their names it was easy to decide 39 The Charges Against Gatrell. Ogden Standard Examiner. February 21, House Proud. 11 whom to sue. Many of the people in the crowd were fined, which they paid gladly and considered a badge of honor. 41 George Gatrell & Amelia Beckwith in Utah On September 1, 1891, George Gatrell reported for his new employment in the Utah territorial courts. It appears that he went on ahead of his family. The oldest children, Lucy, Kate (Catherine), and Cyrus, stayed with their mother in Michigan during another school year so Catherine and Cyrus could complete their final examinations at Marshall High School. The younger children (Arthur and Winnifred) probably stayed with their mother as well. George was by no means idle during this time. In addition to his employment, he was active at the Episcopal Good Shepherd Church of Ogden and was elected vestryman. He was also active at the 25 th street mission in Ogden. 42 The family was reunited in Ogden, Utah on July 11, The time in Michigan was well spent as Kate received the Dibble prize medal for being first in scholarship and deportment in her high school. 43 A new fourth district court opened on June 1, Judge Miner served on the fourth district court from 1892 to After 1894, George reported for Judge Miner s replacements, Harvey Walker Smith and then Henry H. Rolapp. The court convened in Ogden, Utah, the second largest city in the territory and home to Utah s main railroad station. There may have been some animosity from Utah Mormons toward the fourth district court, because a defense of Gatrell was printed in the Ogden Standard Examiner on February 21, The article refers to charges against Gatrell, Judge James A. Miner, and McClure and declares the charge to be only a Mormon slander. Despite this account of slander, George and Amelia seem to have been successful and well-liked by their new neighbors. Amelia was active in the local temperance movement, participating in temperance meetings, writing a letter to the editor of the Salt Lake Tribune, and having two poems on the subject printed in the Ogden Standard Examiner: The Drunkard s Wife (August 23, 1892) and To the Rescue (October 10, 1900). Additional poems entitled Time Evens All Things was printed on September 29, 1893, and The Beautiful Snow was printed on March 6, Marshall, Michigan. Wikipedia. January 15, Parish Officers Chosen. 12 George most likely earned a comfortable living as a court reporter. It was a very prestigious career during that time. An editorial in the Deseret Weekly printed March 20, 1890 states: Competent court reporters sufficiently expert to do official work are not lying around loose in heaps. You could no more manufacture one out of the average slow-going, fat specimen of the genus homo than you could train a Liverpool dray horse to do serve on the race course in competition with J.I.C. The competent official court reporter is a human greyhound. He is mentally constructed for speed. Successive daily work in official court reporting, for one week, would prostrate the strongest among them. George retired from court reporting sometime before February 1895, possibly in 1894 when Judge Miner left since a new judge would have had authority to appoint a new court reporter. He started a stenography school, Gatrell s Unique school of Practical Business Shorthand and Typewriting. He also taught a shorthand course at Weber Stake Academy. The Salt Lake Tribune reported the following on April 26, 1895: Yesterday afternoon George Gatrell closed his fifth class of twenty weeks in shorthand, at the Weber Stake Academy, graduating a class of ten pupils, nearly all of whom are ladies and gentlemen of mature years. The afternoon was spent in exercises outside the regular course, and at the conclusion Mr. Gatrell gave a farewell address, which was taken by the class in shorthand. In 1896, the family moved to 432 S. 3 rd East in Salt Lake City. 45 They were living at that address in the 1900 census, and in Catherine Spudel is not listed on the 1900 Utah census, so she probably died sometime between 1880 and Thomas John Beckwith died October 11, 1902 at 432 S 3 rd East. He was 93 years old. 46 Lucy Horwood Gatrell ( ) Lucy Gatrell was elected as the public school music teacher on February 22, She also taught piano, organ, and voice private lessons at her home at 2338 Adams Avenue, Ogden. 48 She married Elmer Gardner Steiner and died October 18, 1950 in Seattle, 45 Record of death of Thomas John Beckwith. Her details were - 2,901 gross tons, length 332ft x beam 40ft, clipper stem, one funnel, two masts, iron construction, single screw and a speed of 13 knots. There was accommodation for 70-1st, 100-2nd and 600-3rd class passengers. Launched in August 1868, she sailed on her maiden voyage from Bremen to Southampton and New York on October 3, In 1878 her engines were compounded by the builders and on October 16, 1889 she left Bremen on her last voyage to Baltimore and New York. On September 18, 1890 she commenced her last Bremen - Baltimore voyage and the following year was sold to a British company.
