1 63 [cross] Year...of Certified Copy Of the original proceedings conducted by Colonel Don Domingo Cabello, governor of the province of Los Texas, consequent to the superior order of the lord commandant general of these Interior Provinces--found at the beginning [hereof]--citing and summoning Felis and Cristobal de los Reyes, Jose Luis de los Rfos, and Ant[oni]o Romero, who were soldiers at the [now] abandoned presidio of [Nuestra Senora del Pilar de] Los Adaes, in order that they may present themselves or their agents to receive the assets belonging to them, which represent proceeds from the balance formed on Lieutenant Colonel Don Angel de Martos y Nabarrete, who was governor of the said province and captain of the aforenamed presidio, which [Martos y Nabarrete was) ordered by the Most Excellent Senor Marques de Rubi to repay, as a result of the inspection review which [Rubf] passed on the troops of the company of the above-mentioned presidio. 2 64 Official letter from the lord commandant general Consequent to that which has. been disclosed by the assessor of this commandery in.view of cuaderno-number 22, which Your Lordship remitted to me with the documents of the inspection review of this company, to authorise distribution of the twenty thousand pesos repaid by Lieutenant Colonel Don Angel de Martos [y Navarrete] to the troops who served at the [now] abandoned presidio of [Nuestra Senora del Pilar de] los Adaes, I have resolved by today's decree to apprise Your Lordship--as I now do--that the effects worth seven hundred twenty-two pesos and four `ranos deposited with Don Luis Ant[oni]o Menchaca as a-debit [Rubric of Domingo Cabello - in favor of Felis and Cristobal de los Reyes, Jose Luis de los Rios, and Antonio Romero, are to be sold immediately at public auction at the highest prices they can bring. The liquid amount which they bring shall be placed in the gratificasion fund of the company with the status of a deposit for the time being. This done, Your Lordship shall post proclamations in your villa [San Fernando de Bexar] and shall send an official letter to the governor of Cohahuila, so that he may also publish them in the province under his jurisdiction, citing and calling forth the aforenamed creditors or their heirs, lv so that when this authorisation is made evident, they may proceed to receive their respective shares. It shall be understood that with the passage of one year, to be designated

Your Lordship shall remit to me a certified copy of the proceedings in due time so that, adding them to the afore-mentioned cuaderno, I may perform thereon what is acceptable [by law]. 7 69 [The aforegoing] agrees with the original thereof, found in the portfolio of [documents concerning] the inspection review passed on the cavalry company of this presidio, in the file of documents numbered 22, which I cite, and from which I -- Don Domingo Cabello, Colonel in the Royal Armies, Governor and Commandant of Arms of the Province of Los Texas, its Missions, Conquests, and Frontiers, Captain of the Cavalry Company of the Royal Presidio of S[a]n Antonio de Bexar, and Inspector General of the Militia Corps and Presidial Troops of the said Province by Commission Conferred by the Lord Commandant General of the Interior Provinces of this Kingdom of New Spain--did order it made and did make it, for the purposes advised in,my decree of the twenty-fifth of. this present month of June. It is accurate, true, and correct. It fills one sheet of plain paper. Present to see it written and compared were Don Jose Ant[oni]o de Bustillo y Zeballos and Don Joaquzn Flores, both living as residents at this presidio of [San Antonio de] Be'xar and villa of S[a]n Fernando, where this has been done on the twenty-eighth day of the month 3 of // June, in the year seventeen hundred eighty-two, before the attendant witnesses with whom I act in the absence of a notary, doing so on this plain paper, as there is none stamped. 8 70 Decree To these proceedings has been added the copy of [the list of] goods and products in the possession of the reformado captain Don Luis Ant[ oni] Menchaca, which [goods] belong to Pelis and Cristobal de los Reyes, Jose Luis de los Rios, and Antonio Romero, who were soldiers in the cavalry company of the [now] abandoned presidio of Los Adaes, and who, being absent, did not receive their share of the balances made for the time when Lieutenant Colonel Don Angel de Martos y Nabarrete was (Rubric of Domingo Cabello] captain of the said company. Therefore let the afore-mentioned Reformado Captain Don Luis Antonio Menchaca be informed by one of the attendant witnesses.with whom I act in the absence of a notary to prepare to deliver the aforementioned goods and products, as ordered by the lord commandant general of the Interior Provinces of this kingdom of New Spain in his superior order which is at the beginning [herein], and to do with them what I am therein advised todo, so that, upon specifying a day on which they are to be received, I may name a person to go and take charge of them, and the auctioning of them may proceed on the same terms advised, in addition to whatever //3v else is to be done in this matter. This I certify Jose Plazido de Monzon, attendant witness Cabello Pedro Dfas del Castillo, attendant witness [C.C., 3-3v PP, in E. 3/5/1782-6/16/1792] Notification On the said day, month, and year, I Jose Plazido de Monzon, one of the attendant witnesses with whom the lord governor and commandant of arms of this province of Los Texas acts in the absence of a notary, in order to effect that which was ordered in the decree aforegoing, having gone to the house and residence of Senor Reformado Captain Don Luis Ant[oni]o Menchaca, made known to him personally the provision above-given. Instructed,thereon and 4 informed thereof he said [the following:] Due to the great loss s.ustained during the period of more than eight years while he had kept and maintained in his possession the

10 articles which he was tnow] ordered to deliver and those specifically mentioned on the reverse of page two of these proceedings, occasioned by the deterioration of the said effegts, it was necessary for him to expend some of them so as not to lose them entirely. Therefore he cannot now make complete delivery of them; but he will indeed do so in the month of November or December of the present year, at the [Rubric of Domingo Cabel].o) return of the residents of this presidio who are going to the market at El Saltillo, and will charge them [to replace] those [items] which are missing from the whole because they were expended. This was all he stated on the matter of which he had been informed. He signed [this statement] with me, as evidence whereof I place it in the proceedings Jose Plazido de Monzon Luis Antonio Menchaca. I am not [prepared] to accede to the demand which he interposes, due to the strict charges given me by the lord commandant general of //4v these [Interior] Provinces, as evidenced in the superior order [included] at the beginning [of this3, for the most speedy conduct of this matter. Thus

11 73 the postponement which the afore-mentioned captain requests for replacement of the items which he has in storage and (which he] must deliver is not admissible. Consequently Don Jose Ant[oni]o de Bustillo y Zeballos, cashier of the abilitac^on of the cavalry company of this presidio, an intelligent person having my full confidence, shall go to the domicile of the aforesaid captain with one of the attendant witnesses with whom I act in the absence of a notary and shall receive and take charge of the goods and products shown on the record found on the reverse of page 2 of these proceedings. All those missing from the complete total thereof will be replaced by the above-mentioned Reformado Captain Don Luis Ant[onilo Menchaca in ready cash at the prices [the.goods] currently have at this presidio and the same ones which they would bring in the auction to be conducted. My above-named deputy is not to permit [Menchaca] to do otherwise for any reason. For all of this I give [Bustillo y Zeballos] sufficient authority to the extent required by law. //5And [when this is] done [let] autos [be made]. Pedro Dias del Castillo, attendant witne s s C.C., 4-5 pp., in E. 3/5 /1782-6/16/1792] Proceedings concerning obedience and the receipt of goods At this Royal Presidio of S[a]n Antonio de Bexar and villa>of S[a]n Fernando, on the fifth day of the month of July, in the year seventeen hundred eightytwo, I, Don Jose Antonio de Bustillo y Zeballos, having seen and obeyed entirely the aforegoing commission which the lord governor of this province has deigned to confer upon me, in prompt and due compliance therewith, accompanied by Don Jose //5 v Plazido de Monzon, one of the attendant witnesses with whom the lord governor acts in the absence of a notary,. did go to the domicile of Ref ormado Captain Don Luis Ant[oni]o Menchaca and did make known to him in person the provision aforegoing. Having been informed of it, he obeyed it, effecting delivery of the afore-mentioned goods, as follows:

And since [goods] representing 122 pesos, 3 reales, and 6 rano s are lacking from the complete total of //6 722 pesos and 4granos an examination was begun [to determine] what [the missing items] were, consequent to what the said captain stated in the reply given on pages 3 verso and 4, as follows:

Consequently, informed of all that has been done --- since he is present --- [Menchaca] says that he is prepared to pay for [the missing goods] at

Thus these proceedings are concluded and I, the appointee, have considered the afore-mentioned goods and effects as having been received. According to the. sum of their prices with respect.to the old schedule, they amount to 6v the four hundred ninety-nine pesos and ten g ranos; whereupon I have signed [this document] on the said day, month, and year, together with Reformado Captain Don Luis Ant[oni]o Menchaca and the attendant witness named by the lord governor of this province, doing so on this plain paper as there is none stamped. In view of this, let these proceedings be sent to the lord governor of this province, that in view thereof he may determine

18 the following:] Delivery has been made by Reformado Captain Don Luis Ant[oni]o Menchaca of the goods and products --- which he had on deposit in his possession --- which belonged to Felis and Cristobal de los Reyes, Jose Luis de los Rfos, and Ant[oni]o Romero. Being absent at the time of distribution of those paid out by Lieutenant Colonel Don Angel de Martos [y Navarrete], who was governor of this province and captain of the [now] defunct cavalry company of the presidio of [Nuestra Senora del Pilar dej los Adaes, [the four men] did not receive [their share]. What the said captain, [Menchaca], must replace amounts to one hundred twenty-two pesos, three reales, and six granos at the price at which [the goods] might be valued according to //7v what they are presently being sold for at this presidio, while five hundred ninety-nine pesos, four reales, and ten Erano s in available goods has been found. Thus the two parts amount to the seven hundred twenty-two pesos and four grarnols which is the total value of them all. Considering the fact that in the auction to be held a great, deal of difficulty could be occasioned in disposing of them when the bidders see the high prices to which they amount, they will be valued with respect to the prices at which they are being sold in the stores at this presidio and to their present state, so as to proceed to their sale. Consequently, satisfied with the legal knowledge and understanding of Don Jose Ant[oni]o de Bustillo y Zeballos, who for so many years
