1 The modal verbs We use modal verbs to show if we believe something is certain, probable or possible (or not). We also use modals to do things like talking about ability, asking permission making requests and offers, and so on. 1. Can Ability to do sth. In the present (substitute form: to be able to) I can speak English. Permission to do sth. In the present (substitute form: to be allowed to) Can I go to the cinema? Request Can you wait a moment, please? Offer I can lend you my car till tomorrow. Suggestion Can we visit Grandma at the weekend? Possibility It can get very hot in Arizona.

In spoken English, the definite article is used before the ordinal number: Charles II - Charles the Second Edward VI - Edward the Sixth Henry VIII - Henry the Eighth
