3 South Carolinas lost boat is the USS Amberjack, this memorial is located at White point Gardens in Charleston, the Submarine Lost boat Memorial is located at the cold war memorial at Patriots point in Mt Pleasant, this has the history and location of the 52 boats on eternal patrol, a plaque is also dedicated to the USS Amberjack and its crew, a moving memorial is held once a year on the third Saturday of March at 11:00 hours Robbie; base secretary Yes I was there no notes were taken since this was our Christmas party. News Letter Editor, Roger Seems of late we are starting to attend more funerals, USSVI and Swamp fox chapters, losing our shipmates both cold war and epically our World war two veterans is heartbreaking, this chapter in history of what the diesel boats endured during the pacific war is slowly ebbing into the sun set. Albert Wood CDR US Submarines has gone on eternal patrol to be with his ship mates. Avery Lord a Swamp Fox Associate has gone on eternal Patrol. Cob: USSVI: Rick Wise The Oyster Roast is scheduled for Saturday, February 26. Besides oysters we will have hamburgers, hot dogs and Rick Sparger s outstanding Catfish Stew. I ll make a decision closer to the event about having a jump castle. Come on out for a good time. Other upcoming events concerning Charleston Base include base meeting on February 10. The Hunley-Housatonic Memorial Service at 1900 on Thursday, February 17 at the Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 3222 Middle Street, Sullivan s Island, S.C, This is a ceremony that is unique to this area and that we look forward to each year. If you haven t attended one yet you really owe it to yourself to witness one. 3

4 The February meeting of the Submarine Veterans of World War Two will be held at noon on February 17. Get there by 1100 for a choice seat. The Amberjack Memorial Service will be held at 1100 on Saturday, March 19 at the Cold War Memorial, Mount Pleasant, SC. For those who are not familiar with this, there were 52 US submarines lost in WWII. Each state has one of these boats as the state submarine. California and New York have two boats each. The South Carolina state submarine is the USS Amberjack SS-219 which was original reported lost in March, I received the following from base VA rep Jim Morrison. JURY Duty Scam Pass this on to your grown children and anyone else you can think of. This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced. The caller claims to be a jury DUTY coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the Scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen. The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado, AZ and more. This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud. Check it out here: Mike Emerson: On the afternoon of Jan. ninth; I drove to downtown Charleston with Lee Allison for the visitation of Cdr. Albert Aloysius Wood Jr. On the way Lee told me that when he became the State Commander for the Swamp Fox Chapter of Sub-vets WW II he made contact with Al Wood. The invitation to attend our meetings was offered but refused. Cdr. Wood sighted poor eye sight as a reason not to drive, and that he would be moving in with one of his sons. He did offer to give the Sub-vets some items he had collected over the years; naturally Lee was happy to hear that. A week or so later Lee received a call from the son that put in no uncertain terms that he would not allow anything to be transferred to us, They belong to us. When we entered the funeral home, wearing our vest, we were greeted by two sons and two daughters. You would have thought we were long loss brothers or shipmates. These 4

5 four family members were so happy that we had come to honor their dad they made it a point to stay with us to ask questions and tell stories of growing up as a Submarine family. Lee had related the story of speaking with the father and the call from the son. He was told that son had passed and the family was looking for a place to give some of their dad s memorabilia where it would serve as a reminder of him. Both the sons live out of state but told Lee they would do everything possible to get some of their dad s stuff to him. Needless to say the ride back home was much better, not only because we were getting out of Charleston, but because we had made the family of Cdr. Wood feel like they are still members of our great Submarine family. Mike Growing old First ~ eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. Second ~ the older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for. Third ~ some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me; I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved. Fourth ~ when you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to youth, think of Algebra. Fifth ~ you know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks. Sixth ~ I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top Seventh ~ one of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young. Eighth ~ one must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been. Ninth ~ being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable. Tenth ~ Long ago, when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft. Today it's called golf. And, finally ~ if you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have anything to laugh at when you are old. 5
