1 JUNE 2012 THE SPENCER CHRISTIAN Dan s Wonderfulness June, 2012 Volume 54, No.6 I ve had some amazing experiences with nature the past month. First, I was out in the Prayer Garden taking in the beautiful weather and enjoying the wonderful gardens that various church members have helped to create, when I decided to check on the sprinkler system and make sure everything would be in order for the fountain to turn on. When I opened the hatch I was delighted to discover a little salamander and three small toads. They had made the space a home! As delighted as I was to see them, other members of the church staff found them to be a little creepy. Then I was on the front porch of my home enjoying a beautiful day with my family and in flew a wren! Michele and the kids jumped and ran and left me to deal with the bird. Tabor came out and help me catch it, and we sent it back outside to freedom. And just the other day we had just finished dinner and I looked outside to see a deer making its way across the yard. It was a small doe. It stopped and ate a few things and eventually ran off into a field at the sound of Nathan shouting, Hi deer! These three encounters may seem small and insignificant. But they are a reminder that we are a part of God s majestic creation, and we share this world with all sorts of beautiful creatures that God created and called, Good. The next time you have an encounter with some of the non-human parts of God s creation, whether it s an encounter with an animal or the surprise of a beautiful wild flower, be sure and reflect on all the beauty God has made and give thanks for being a part of such splendor. O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor. You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Psalm 8, NRSV
