1 BUCK CREEK UMC NEWSLETTER EAST TIPP ALUMNI REUNION: SEPTEMBER 17 Dear Alumni, We want you to join us for the 2016 East Tipp Alumni Reunion on September 17, Note: This is a change of date, because there's a Purdue football game on the first date we chose (Sept 10th), and local hotels/motels are filling up for that date. I apologize for the date change, and we debated whether to change the date, but because hotels/motels require a two-night minimum and raise their rates besides, we felt alumni from out of town would prefer the date change rather than increased costs for lodging. If you attended the first East Tipp reunion in 2011 or the second in 2013, you know how much you enjoyed meeting classmates and others who attended East Tipp. If you didn't attend, then you'll have to join us this year for a memorable reunion. At the last reunion, on Saturday evening, we gathered at The Best Western for a buffet dinner. The food was excellent, as was the camaraderie. We remembered those classmates and friends who were no longer with us. Several very nice door prizes were distributed. Photos were taken, and classes which had graduated fifty or more years before were recognized. This year we're recognizing the classes of '64, '65, and '66. The best part of the reunion was meeting old friends and classmates and remembering the good (and not so good) times we shared at East Tipp. Mr. Naylor and Mr. Lennen both attended our reunion, and at the 2016 reunion, we're hoping we can get several more teachers to join us. You probably won't be able to meet so many people you know from high school in one location. This will be the third East Tipp alumni reunion. There won't be a Friday evening event at the East Tipp Middle School this year. This year's reunion event will be at the Outpost Catering and Banquet Facility, located at 2501 Old US 231 South (near the Elston Road stoplight). The cost per person for the reunion is $35. The cost will jump to $45 per person for all registrations postmarked after July 31, 2016, so please don't wait until the last minute. Don't let this notice get forgotten. Print out the registration form (page 23) and return it before you forget it. At least, stick a reminder on your refrigerator door. No refunds after September 1, continued page 3 1

13 I was in prison And you visited me. -Matthew 25:36 Dear friends, Ken Mueller, Clayton Temple, Anita and myself are serving God in a ministry entitled "Kairos." Kairos is a team of interdenominational Christian people bringing the ministry of Jesus to those in prison. The program is designed to be presented in state and federal correctional facilities for both men and women (each done separately). The purpose of Kairos is to establish strong Christian communities among the populations of correctional institutions. Men's Kairos #24 at the Westville Correctional Facility will be held on May 12-15, We would like to ask for your prayers for the team of people and 42 guests from the facility. In order to sign up for a prayer time please visit - then go to prayer vigil and scroll down to Westville Correctional Facility and sign on. We are also seeking those who would consider baking cookies for the prisoners, and/or make some agape (examples below), and/or donate a small amount of money towards this ministry (please make checks out to Kairos of Indiana). We are asking that you pray about this and do whatever part (if any) that God leads you to do at this time. Another important piece of the weekend are the "Kairos Kookies" (see page 15). Throughout the weekend, the 42 participants will have access to all of the cookies that they can eat. In addition, at one point during the weekend, every person in the prison - staff and inmates, will be personally given the gift of these cookies by some of our team. Because prisoners never get home cooked food, the kookie ministry becomes extremely effective as it shows them that someone (Christ through you) does care about them. And guess how many cookies we need, about 4000 dozen for the weekend! That's right, 4000 dozen!! We are hoping that several of you can make 5 or 10 dozen "Kairos Kookies." Knowing that you probably have a favorite recipe, however, all of the cookies that go into the prison have to be the same, except for your personal prayers that go into 13

14 them. Therefore, the recipe and instructions for the "Kairos Kookies will follow. Please call or to let us know if you are led by God to serve in any way. Yours in sharing the LOVE OF CHRIST, Ken, Clayton, Anita, Jim FORMS OF AGAPE FOR KAIROS Green Agape This is money. Anywhere from a $5 meal card donation to covering the cost of a resident s weekend is a wonderful way to share the love of Christ. The estimated cost per person, per weekend is $125. Any monetary donation is appreciated. Meal cards are a popular way to contribute any amount and will be placed at each participant s table setting. Costs include the meals and snacks for the incarcerated guests and team, supplies, cost of equipment, and insurance. Your donation will also go to help expand Kairos to other prisons. Make checks payable to - "Kairos of Indiana". Placemats Agape Placemats are used in the dining facility. They may be decorated with crayons, colored pencils or markers. They may have a Bible verse or a simple "God loves You" on them. Any number may be made and they do not all have to be alike. They must have no stickers. glitter or sparkles on them. A suggestion is to not have them three dimensional, as trays will be set on them. They may be signed, but only with a first name and age (if child). These are a great source of agape love. Most of these are put up in the lockers of the residents and are coveted. Poster Agape: Posters may be in all sizes from standard poster board to a standard sheet of paper that is 8 x 11. They may be made by outside organizations or other groups who feel compassion for the incarcerated. They may not have glitter, stickers or sparkles on them. They may be decorated with colored pencils, crayons or markers. They may be signed with first names only or collective group designations. The Chaplain, before presentation, will approve these. Cut Out Hands Agape: Traced hands cut from construction paper are used as decoration on the walls for the meeting facility. They may be decorated with colored pencils, markers or crayons. They may not have glitter. stickers or sparkles on them. They may quote a Biblical verse or a simple "God Bless you". They may be signed with a person's first name only and age (if child). Even the smallest child's hand means a great deal to the residents. The more of these we receive the better. This could be a great Sunday School project. Prayer Please sign up for a half hour (30 minutes) prayer slots at and look under the Community Name for the Westville Correctional Facility (near the bottom). 14

15 KAIROS CHOCOLATE CHIP KOOKIES Paul & Silas were praying & singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Acts 16:25 Basic Cookies - Kairos Cookie Preparation Since the cookies will be taken into a prison, there are some very rigid requirements that must be followed. Every cookie is inspected before it is allowed in the facility, and any that are oversized, broken, or stuck together must be removed. These instructions for Kairos cookies are very important! The No-No s for Kairos Cookie Preparation: + Do Not add icing, powdered sugar or any other topping or coating on the outside. + Do Not use pre-made, dry, refrigerated or frozen cookie dough. The impact of agape love felt from homemade cookies is overwhelming when the inmates realize the sacrifice of time in mixing and baking cookies from scratch. + Do Not use butter or margarine. The ones made with butter break easily. + Do Not bring bought or no-bake cookies. Do Not use raisins or nuts. The size should be 2 diameter or the lid of a Pringle s canister. PLEASE BAKE ONLY CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES USING THE RECIPE BELOW ONLY (and this recipe will help prevent breakage of the cookies) COOL PACK FREEZE: Cool! Cool! Cool.each cookie thoroughly. Chocolate chip cookies take a long time to cool completely. Bag thoroughly cooled cookies in a quart sized, press zip type, (NO bags with tab sliders). Six cookies per bag, and freeze them. Basic Cookie Dough (Makes 5 dozen) 1 cup Crisco 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla 2 3/4 cups flour 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder 2 cups chocolate chips >> Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time. Sift dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture. Beat in vanilla. Add chocolate chips. Drop onto cookie sheets by spoonfuls. Bake at 350 degrees until medium to dark brown (From 13 to 20 minutes). Cookies should be 2-21/2 inches in diameter (size of a Pringles lid) >>The Key Ingredient: Prayer. Pray individually or as a family over the ingredients before and during mixing. Pray over the cookies as you drop them onto the cookie sheets and bake them. Ask God to use your cookies as a source of His love to shine on the prisoners and staff on the Kairos weekend. Pray that each cookie brings the inmate, officer or warden who eats it closer to God. We want every person to become part of the family of God. 15
