It was a beautiful time here at the church Christmas Eve. We had just over 80 in attendance. With all the singing and candlelight, it was magical time to celebrate Jesus! The New Year is upon us. A new years tradition is to pick something to do better in the coming year. Many choose to be healthier, lose weight, or to give up a bad habit. Make your New Years revelation one that will get you closer to God. One that will make you more humble and kind in our world full of negativity. Come and help brighten their day with the love of Jesus Christ! The blessing box has been helping many families lately. It is restocked every day and the next morning, it is almost always empty. We are very thankful that we are able to help those in need. Since it has been a big hit, we have added a second box! 3 Helping Hands Food Family Worship Center Harvester s Drive-Thru is Friday, January 18th 9:00 am. The regular distribution is Saturday, January 19th 10:30 am. If you wish to help, please be there at 9:30. Our Church Pot Luck is: January 13th If anyone has clothing for Hope House (new or old, as long as it is usable) please put them in the red bin. Dianna Jarrell will pick it up on Sunday and deliver it the next week. December was a busy month! Between the extra meetings and all the Christmas celebrations, the month has flown by! 4 Merry Christmas! Have you been able to catch your breath after the hustle and bustle of the season? There s always so much to do the shopping, cooking, wrapping, decorating. Its go, go, go and then just like that, it s over. I m always sad when it s time to take my nativities down. You may have picked up on the fact that I m a nativity nerd. Over the years I ve collected over a dozen of them. My oldest is from Kevin s family and it s a fairly typical one from the 1950s. My newest was gifted to me just this year and it s from Mexico. I have one from Old Mission Santa Barbara. Old Mission is a 232-year-old mission and home to a community of Franciscan friars. One was given to us after the birth of our first son. Its child safe and all three of our kids (and now our two grandkids) have played with it, so it s looking pretty ragged. Oh, and one of the shepherds heads has been gnawed on by one of the dogs. Regardless of where they come from or the story behind them, I love them all! But when I saw this picture of a nativity with Joseph gazing at the newborn Jesus while Mary sleeps, I was blown away. It s such a beautiful depiction of the Holy Family. So often we sanitize the birth story and forget that this is a story of a young mother who has traveled a long distance heavy with child, only to end up laboring in a stable before giving birth to the Son of God. Both father and mother had to be in need of rest and finally, they have it! Sometimes we get so engrossed in the busyness of the season that we forget to stop and just appreciate the beauty of what we are celebrating. God sent His Son to us, as a baby, to two very human parents. What an amazing gift! I hope that this picture causes you to pause in your very busy day and just breathe. And while you re at it, say a silent prayer of thanks for all the blessings in your life. Just as Joseph is gazing in wonderment at his baby boy, God gazes down in love at you. Never forget that you are part of God s plan and that you are a beloved child of God. Again, Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you soon. 5 Present: Administrative Council December 13, 2018 Paul Manny, Cindi Mills, Janice Caruthers, Lyle Mills, Lee and Carole Milroy, Clayton Otwell, Walter Key, Kos Jarrell, Pastor Kathy Symes. Opening Prayer: Kos opened with prayer. Old minutes: Minutes will stand as presented Finance: Started the month with -$ We have $2, after bills are paid through today. Had Power Church training. Finance went through and approved clearing balances for line items. Trustees: Did not have a meeting. Dryer at parsonage was repaired. Front door lock was broke. Don fixed it. PPR: PPR will meet December 30 after church. Member Care: Worship: Blue Christmas Service will be on December 21 at 7 pm. Christmas Eve service is at 7 pm. Mission: Blessing Box is being utilized. Heifer sent a thank you for our donation. Lay Leadership: UMW: Daylights elections will be held in January. Nightlights will meet next Monday. District Leadership: Have not met. Scouts: Has a great group and they plan on asking them back for next year. Memorial: Membership: How can we get inactive members to be active members. Kathy will bring a letter to council to send to inactive members. Motion made by Carol. Second by Kos. Carried Scholarship: Disaster/local church: Season of Faith: Met and decorated cookies. Thinking about doing something in February. Pastor report: Had Leadership training with about 25 in attendance. Kathy will be gone the 16 and 17 for Orders and Fellowship. Kathy is continuing to progress. She is still in eye therapy and cognitive therapy. She is back full time in the office. New business: Kathy asked if we would be interested in a conference on safety and security for our church. Kathy will see what the conference has to offer. WUMC is in the Lawrence Area Network. We will meet in February. Mission Team would like to: We, members of the WUMC Mission Team, are requesting monies raised by the Quarters Tube be used to assist in purchasing supplies for the Blessing Boxes for the 2019 year. The average monthly collection from the Quarters Tube has been in the $20. - $30. range. If this request doesn t find the support of the council s majority, our second option is to use the Quarters Tube monies to help finance mission trip efforts in the near future. We would like to focus our efforts much closer to home throughout Our current efforts, Blessing Box and Harvesters, are having a definite impact on the Wellsville community, especially our youth. Kos made a motion to use the quarter tube money for 2019 to fund the blessing box Walter seconded. Motion passes with majority. 6 for 2 opposed. Janice and Lee opposed Carole abstained.
