2 Reflection We re back! As I prepared to write this reflection on the day after we returned home from a trip through six European countries (seven if you count the Vatican!), I asked our daughter Sarah what she thought you would like to hear from me. Her response: I m back?! Well, yes. We are back. And it s great to be home--i m looking forward to reconnecting with all of you. This past month of being a stranger in all those different places was a life-changing experience. We became so aware of our limitations, and the patience and good humor of our hosts, as we struggled to express ourselves in the simplest of conversations. We were very obviously tourists as we marched from train stations to hotels, up great staircases and down cobblestone streets, bearing our three suitcases, three backpacks and Sarah s be- loved Slovak guitar. We often chose our meals by pointing at items on a menu, and were grateful for English translations that were sometimes awkward and not quite accurate (light fishes?? Endive cabbages??). Despite our uncertainty, we enjoyed the heavenly flavors of regional foods, delighted in the hospitality we were shown, and learned to say Please, Thank you! and Goodbye in several languages. We learned to take two hours to eat our evening meal (this is difficult for us Americans!), and to enjoy every bite and the conversation that accompanies it. We endured degree heat, found every water fountain we could find in Italy, and followed the lead of the residents in not just drinking the cool water but splashing in it! buildings that were breathtaking in their beauty. And we discovered this: in stepping out of our comfortable, known routines we were able to depend on others in a way that s not usually required in our everyday lives, and gave us new experiences that will stay with us now that we re back. The landscapes we saw, the people we met, the history we walked through, will now be in the background of our daily landscapes and we will be on the lookout for the strangers who wander into our familiar places, seeking a place to visit, just for a while. It s good to be back. ~~Pastor Beth We met fellow travelers from all over the world, and heard of their adventures. We saw original masterpieces and architecture, and church An Old Irish Blessing May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Grand Meadow Women of ELCA WELCA did not have a regular meeting in July. Instead, 14 members and guests took a "Trip out of Town and visited the Herring Gardens and Grotto.

4 Grand Meadow Women of ELCA WELCA did not have a regular meeting in July. Instead, 14 members and guests took a "Trip out of Town and visited the Herring Gardens and Grotto. We walked through acres and acres of flower gardens - annuals and perennials. There was also a man-made pond and other beautiful landscapes. We even had a chance to pet a baby goat. WELCA served the Grand Meadow Healthcare monthly birthday party on July 10. Thanks to everyone who furnished food and helped serve. One of the high lights of the tour was the beautiful grotto where we joined hands and sang the table prayer. Following the tour, we were served a delicious lunch. Special thanks to the ladies who provided transportation. We were back in Grand Meadow by 2 pm and everyone agreed it was a day well spent. WELCA will meet Wednesday, August 12, at 1:30 p.m. at the Meadows Assisted Living. WELCA will be serving a light supper for the Bible School students, parents, and guests on the last evening of Vacation Bible School, August 6.

Cost: $6/person which includes lunch and workshop materials; registration required Registration deadline: 9/15/15 Register online at : safeguarding-gods-children/ If you Google search the state of church giving you can find, in the same results feed, one headline that declares church giving is at an all time low and another that says church giving has gone up. The results can be confusing. The confusion only adds to the anxiety many of us are prone to feel when it comes to financial stewardship in the church. Read the full article at: Rethinking-Stewardship-Hassanally.pdf 7th and 8th Grade Confirmation families Mark your calendars now: Youth Group for 7th-12th Grade Aug 3-6 / 6:30 8 pm VBS Confirmation Organizational Meeting 6:30 pm Wednesday, Sept. 30. For all 7th and 8th graders who will participate in confirmation instruction this year, and their parents. All are welcome parents must attend with their youth. We will go over the calendar and family/student expectations for the year and plan service activities. Youth Group for 7th-12th grade will begin on October 7! Watch for more info from your fearless leader, Joanne Dimick, as summer winds up! Conquering Challenges with God s Mighty Power August 3-6 from 6:30-8 pm. Please come early the first night to register. There will also be a light meal provided 6-6:30 pm prior to the start of VBS. On August 6 VBS Finale- there will be a short program at 7:30 pm for anyone to attend. The meal that day is provided by the WELCA ladies of GML. If anyone would like to help, I still need volunteers: 1) To help provide a meal on Monday, Aug. 3 and Wednesday, Aug. 5 from 6-6:30 pm. In the past we have had sloppy joes, pizza, spaghetti, etc. anything simple/cheap you d like to make. I believe its around people that usually eat. 2) Treats! Donated snacks could include popcorn / popsicles /juice boxes / etc..

I have 5 grandsons Gaven, Tanner, Tucker, Hunter and Ryland. My parents are Gary & Karen, and they still live in Spring Valley in the house I grew up in.

6 Five Minutes with Renee Skifter I grew up in Spring Valley, Minnesota. My family includes my husband Jeff, our daughters Brittney (12) and Jennifer (10) and I have 2 sons from my first marriage- Brian (26) who lives in Mankato and Jayson (23) who lives in Owatonna. I have 5 grandsons Gaven, Tanner, Tucker, Hunter and Ryland. My parents are Gary & Karen, and they still live in Spring Valley in the house I grew up in. I am the oldest sibling, which I have 2 sisters- Shelly and her family live Rushford and Amy, who lives in Rochester and 1 brother- Kevin and his family live in Rochester and lots of nieces and nephews. My occupation is/was I have worked at Mayo Clinic for 25 years. I currently am a Medical Staff Assignment Coordinator. We are in charge of all the Staff & Resident calendars and assignments for the ECH (Employee and Community Health) practice - Baldwin PCIM, Family Med, Pediatrics, NE/NW Clinics, South Clinic and Kasson Clinic. My perfect day would be at our camper with my family or on vacation in Duluth. My hobbies/interests include I like to scrapbook, read, and do landscaping projects. People would be surprised to know that I have never been on an airplane. The day I d love to live again (and why) is the birth of my children. Each day was full of much love. I couldn t live without my family - they are my everything! The best advice I ve ever received Be kind to others. I enjoy Grand Meadow Lutheran because I always feel welcomed there. I enjoy teaching Sunday School and VBS.
