January 2018 CONTENTS: Important Info Election...2 Holiday Activities...3 Kudos...4 USPS Info...3 Coming Events...5 Calendar...6 Woodside Directory...7 WOODSIDE NEWS Important Info The New Year brings several changes that will impact most of us in our regular lives. If you vote, use the telephone, or travel, you need to know what is coming down the pike. Here is a brief explanation: VOTING California passed Senate Bill 450, the California Voter s Choice Act, in Sacramento County is the largest of the 14 counties that will test out the new procedures in the Statewide Primary on June 5, All registered voters will receive a ballot in the mail 29 days before Election Day. You can return the ballot in the envelope provided and mail it back on or before Election Day. There will also be 50 Drop-off Locations open 28 days before Election Day; you can take your completed ballot to any of these locations. Management Office: (916) Office@woodsidehoa.com Woodside Security: (916) Office Hours Monday - Friday 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM 2274 Woodside Ln. Sacramento, CA Instead of the regular polling places, there will be 78 Vote Centers located throughout Sacramento County. They will be open for eleven days before the election, from 7am to 8pm. At a Vote Center you can: vote in person request a replacement ballot drop off your ballot register to vote or update your registration receive voting assistance. You can now choose to vote through the mail, at a Drop-off box, or at a Vote Center. You can vote 11 days early or on Election Day; you can choose any Vote Center in the County; and you can register on the spot. The Vote Centers will be open 13 hours a day for eleven days, staffed with people who can help you with any questions you may have. Best of all, nobody can hack a paper ballot. TELEPHONE We mentioned this in an earlier newsletter, when it was just some far out weirdness, but now it s here and it s a bit complicated. Last August an additional number, Area

Code 279, was authorized for the 916 area and the transition period is now over. Starting February 10, 2018, all calls in the 916 Area Code will have to be dialed using 1+ area code + seven-digit telephone number. If customers do not use the 1+10 dialing procedure, the call will not be completed and a recording will instruct them to hang up and call again. That means if you are 916 and are calling your neighbor who is also 916, you must dial neighbor s 7-digit number. Beginning March 10, 2018, new telephone lines or services may be assigned the 279 area code and calls not using the 1+10 method will not go through. Emergency or service numbers will not change, so you can still dial 911, 311, 411, etc. Security door and gate systems must be reprogrammed to dial 1+area code+7- digit number, and we will have to reprogram systems such as speed dialing, call forwarding, etc. You should also update the info on your business cards, checks, advertising, etc. and let family and friends know they should make the change in your contact information. Dialing the 1+10 procedure does not change what a call costs and does not mean that the call is a toll or long distance. Area rates will not change, and what is now a local call will remain a local call. This overlay is for the greater Sacramento Area, including parts of El Dorado, Solano, Sutter, Yolo, and Placer Counties. TRAVEL Effective January 22, 2018, TSA will start enforcing REAL ID requirements at airport security checkpoints. Their warning states, Travelers seeking to use their state-issued driver s license or identification card for boarding commercial aircraft may use such documents only if they are issued by a REAL ID compliant state or a non-compliant state with an extension. California s DMV website says they are prepared to issue federal compliant REAL ID driver s licenses and CA ID s starting January 22, It also implies that your current California ID document is acceptable for domestic flights. However, TSA s website indicates they will accept only REAL IDs at airports. They will also accept your passport or some other federal ID, but many of us don t have or don t want to carry those for an in-country domestic flight. If you fly, whether domestic or international, we recommend that you apply for a federal compliant form of identification. In the meantime, check with your travel agent or airline, so you won t have any surprises at the airport. JANUARY 2018 ELECTION The election for new Board members will be held at Woodside s Annual Meeting at the Clubhouse at 7pm on January 9. We must receive votes from a quorum (182) of Woodside homeowners. If you mailed or brought your ballot to the Office, thank you. You can also bring your ballot to the Annual Meeting, and you are encouraged to attend. At that time all ballots will be tallied and the new Board Members will be announced. There are four vacancies on the Board and six candidates are running; nominations will be accepted from the floor. Angius and Terry, LLC, will serve as Inspector of Elections. The announced candidates are: Matt Rezvani, Pamela Williams, Jeff Rios, David Bakehouse, Ken Marshall, and Nola C. Castle. 2 Woodside Newsletter January

DECEMBER HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES Making Spirits Bright, Woodside s traditional holiday event, did just that. Laurie Thrash checked off 145 bright spirits at the party, and more than a few others showed up after she stopped counting. It was one of Woodside s best gatherings. There was splendid food, catered by Greta Griffen; Maria and Jose Renigifo were kept busy filling wine glasses; and groups of residents settled into every possible spot in the Clubhouse. One of the nicest things was that people didn t just stay in small corners with their friends. They moved around, shared greetings and conversation with other groups, and connected with neighbors they didn t know. Lyn Efken is committed to production of this event every year. She worked closely with the Office staff to plan menus, arrange the catering, coordinate installation of the decorations, and take care of a million other details. Laurie Thrash put in dozens of hours to assure that every little thing came off as planned. However, she insists it was the work of many helpers that made it possible. Kathy Draper and Kathy Klusman were tireless in their efforts to get everything set up before guests arrived. Maria and Jose serve the Woodside community in many ways year round, and that night they revealed their bartending skills. We also want to recognize Sage Po, the harpist. She fell in love with the harp when she was eight years old, and started playing professionally when she was 15. She created a musical net that unified the entire evening and inspired a spontaneous singalong. Thanks go to Danny Gutierrez, who arranged for her performance. Songs of the Season. In addition to the traditional Holiday Party, our own Woodside Jammers organized an evening of Christmas Carols. Most of the regulars were there: Gerald Klaas, Danny Gutierrez, Linda Jayne, Tal Jones, Rose Ochoa and Leslie Oesterich. Rose s piano supported the vocals and Leslie s soprano soared throughout the room. Gerald brought multiple copies of a songbook with music and lyrics, and Laurie Thrash brought cookies and mulled wine. About 30 people showed up and everybody got in the spirit. The audience initially joined in with hesitant mumbles, but before the evening was over they did some old favorites in stunning three-part harmony. This might turn into another holiday tradition for Woodside. All of us on the Woodside Staff wish a happy and prosperous New Year to all of you. 3 Woodside Newsletter January 3

KUDOS USPS INFO On December 16, when wind gusts hit 46mph. Woodside lost a big part of one of our trees. The redwood is still there, but about 150 feet of the top crashed into the landing of Building 2202 in Old Woodside. The top is the most expansive part of the tree, and it took out most of the exterior stairway and landing. Nobody was hurt, but the damage was extensive and it wasn t safe for residents to get into or out of their homes. Sometime late Saturday or Sunday of the Christmas week-end thieves broke into one stand of mailboxes in Sierra and several in East. By the time you read this all repairs should be completed and we should be back to regular delivery. I always want to give everybody up-todate accurate information, but in this case Office staff and residents got a lot of conflicting information from USPS staff. We logged 300 phone calls from concerned residents the first two days after Christmas, and I regret that we probably passed misinformation along to some of them. It was a Saturday, but when Security notified Maintenance Supervisor Frank Wilcox he immediately organized his team to attack the problem. They brought chain saws, brains, and muscle and got everything moved out of the way so they could make the building safe and accessible. Clean-up and construction continued for several more days, but by eight o clock that same night the area was clear and people were safely back in their homes. We all care about our mail, including the mail workers, but there was a lot going on that involved a lot of different people. What I can tell you for sure is that when repairs are completed some keys will work but some locks will have been replaced. In that case you will have to get new keys from the Arden Post Office, and there should not be a fee. You will have to present a valid ID that shows your Woodside address; if your regular ID hasn t been updated they will accept a utility bill that shows your address here. Adrianna Nand, CCAM, Property Manager PET OF THE MONTH Bambi Ayala Dubnick Bambi was a stray at Woodside who adopted her human parents on August 26, 2008, which by coincidence was National Dog Day. According to her DNA tests she is 50% min pin. Although she is shy with adults, for a tasty treat she will perform some of her many tricks. GREAT WORK BY OUR WOODSIDE CREW! 4 Woodside Newsletter January us your pet pictures to be featured on woodside pet of the month. office@woodsidehoa.com

NEW YEAR RESOLUTION Some New Year Resolutions for Woodside Residents To make life more pleasant for others in my community, and to avoid fines or other disciplinary actions, I resolve to Keep my dog on leash at all times when outside. I will go out with it every time, will promptly pick up waste, and I will not permit it to mark my neighbor s property or front door. I understand that elves left photos and videos of my incorrect behavior with Management, and I resolve to be a responsible pet owner. I resolve to honor the 10 mph speed limit on property. New signs will be installed to help me remember, and fines will be forthcoming if I forget. I resolve to maintain appropriate conduct and speak respectfully to the Woodside staff. I will not shout, curse, call them names, or threaten physical harm. I resolve to join a committee. I resolve not to place garbage on the top of an overflowing bin or on the ground of the trash enclosure. I resolve not to throw away furniture in the trash bin or enclosure. I resolve to break down cardboard boxes and always put them in the recycling and never in the regular trash bin. COMING EVENTS JANUARY The only thing we have scheduled for January is to elect and install new board members. Clubhouse, 7pm, January 9. In 2018 there will definitely be a Mothers Day Tea, a July 4th Barbecue, and a Holiday Party. Anything beyond that, such as a monthly coffee hour, requires more volunteers. However, there are some other things in the works. For example: The Swanston Park manager wants to schedule an event at the Clubhouse, in the style of Bringing the Park to You. He wants to let us know what they have to offer and ask us how they can better serve our community. A Woodside resident who belongs to a Sacramento timebank, or skill exchange, would like to open it up to our community. If there is any interest she will schedule a presentation here to explain the many benefits of such a group. Contact lindajayne46@gmail.com. The Budget Committee will begin their work in March and/or April. There will be at least one, and probably two, voter registration sessions at the Clubhouse. Probably in April, before the Statewide ballots are mailed out in May. A summer yard sale. A shred day. All other ideas will be carefully considered. So if you have a new project, and you are willing to back it up with action, check with the appropriate committee or with the Manager. All of us on the Woodside Staff wish a happy and prosperous New Year to all of you. 5 Woodside Newsletter January 5

As a result, the association cannot guarantee your security. You should NOT rely on the association to protect you from loss or harm. You should provide for your own security by keeping your doors locked; refusing to open your door to strangers; asking workmen for identification; installing a security system; carrying insurance, etc. Woodside Newsletter January 7
