Now I am preparing to move to Sandwich to serve as the interim minister of the First Church of Christ. (They get to call themselves First Church because this was the first church started on Cape Cod.) I complete my ministry here April 30 th and hand over all pastoral matters to someone else. It is for someone else to do the weddings, baptisms and funerals. May 1 st I begin my new calling. Leaving for me is a time filled with both grief and excitement. I leave people I know and love and a place where I have come to feel very comfortable. I also leave wondering what course the church will choose for the future. It is interesting that when members talk about the Federated Church they often talk of what a wonderful building we have. When people in the Continued on page 2 1.

2 From the Senior Minister Continued... community talk about the Federated Church they talk about the great ministry we have to the vulnerable people in the community. I wonder why it is not the opposite the community admiring the building and the members embracing our ministry of hospitality. We have this great opportunity found in few places. It is the opportunity to do what Jesus said he came to do which is to bring good news to the poor. That is a conversation to have with the interim. While I have no part in choosing who comes next, when I have talked with pastors interested in serving here I have said they need to feel equally comfortable in a room full of wheelchairs and walkers, and a room full of homeless many of whom are mentally ill. Most people do not feel comfortable in both settings. But I know pastors who do. And my hope is that you choose such a person. So even as it is a time of leave taking, know that we will still be around. We will live in the same house and frequent the same places. Maybe we will run into each other in the grocery store or golf course of some other exotic locale. Just always know you are in my thoughts, hopes and prayers. Palm Sunday Brunch Please plan on joining us for our Annual Palm Sunday Brunch immediately following Church on Sunday, April 9 th in Fellowship Hall. 3 Musical Meanderings With all the political talk lately about Putin and Russian hackers, I got to wondering about the origin of Russian music. Here s what I found: The Russians were introduced to Western music in the 10 th century, when Prince Vladimir of Kiev decided that everybody should become Christian. Before then, the Russians had only been interested in singing their own folk songs. Once the Church got established, it didn t think very much of folk music at all. Things finally came to a head in 1636, when the leader of the Church, the patriarch Joseph, banned all music-making in the home. In Moscow, 50 wagon-loads of instruments were burned in a big bonfire. A little while later, Peter the Great decided that music wasn t so bad, and formed a military band to get things going again. Mihail Glinka was the first important composer, and established a truly Russian style of music, basing his compositions on traditional folk songs. He is considered the father of Russian music. The composer who really brought Russian music into its own was Mily Balakirev, who was born in He gathered around him a group of four other young composers, who all believed that Russian music was the greatest thing since sliced bread. They were Cesar Cui, Alexander Borodin, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Modest Mussorgsky. Together, they have come to be known as The Mighty Five. They disdained the music of Tchaikovsky and Rubenstein, who didn t sound Russia enough to suite them. Although Cui was a composer, his greater role was as a journalist, championing the music of Russian nationalism that his friends were writing. He eventually rose to the rank of general in the Russian army. He died at the ripe old age of 83. Mussorgsky s best known composition is Pictures At an Exhibition. He wrote it for piano, not realizing the people would much rather listen to it played by full orchestra. An alcoholic, he died at the age of 41. Rimsky-Korsakov wrote the very famous Scheherazade suite and The Flight Of The Bumblebee. Borodin s best known composition is his opera Prince Igor, which Rimsky-Korsakov finished for him after he died. He also wrote a whole set of variations on Chopsticks (which was first published in Glasgow in 1877). Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin and Balakirev all died of heart attacks. Poor Balakirev came to the sorriest end. He became very superstitious and consulted a fortune teller daily, and would eat only fish that had gone to sleep. (!?!) I am a composer in search of oblivion; and I'm always slightly ashamed to admit that I compose. Alexander Borodin 3.

4 Welcome to our New Sexton! Mission Committee News We will be combining our Mission of the Months for April and May as we have done the past few years, to collect diapers, wipes and cash donations for A Baby Center. This is a meaningful way to remember your mother on Mother s Day, and has been very successful in the past. Your donation has helped them in supplying these much needed items to the babies and children in our area. If you would like to donate a check or cash, there are Mission envelopes in the pews. Simply note Missions on the memo line of the check. Checks should be made out to Federated Church of Hyannis. Thank you very much for your continued generosity. Please help me welcome our next Sexton, Kurt Richard. Kurt has spent most of his life here on Cape Cod except for a little time in Brockton. He worked with his brother-inlaw, Dennis Gonzales (a member of this church) in Dennis s business New Beginnings for about seven years. Before that Kurt owned his own heating and air conditioning business. His mother, Selma Mason was a member of Federated Church for over 80 years and sang with the choir right up until moving to a nursing home. Selma passed away at the age of 94. Kurt s brother Roy also played the piano at our church from time to time. Kurt is described by his brother-in-law as kind, hardworking, caring and a real fan of Duncan Donuts chocolate glazed donuts! 5 From the President With Rev. Terry s decision to take an Interim position in Sandwich, and Kristi s plans to move to Florida, we want to thank them for the many years that they have given to our Church. The Church will be starting a new chapter, and soon you will be hearing the names of members who will be serving on the Search Committee for an Interim Minister. The Music Committee has formed a search committee for an organist/choir director, and they have held their first meeting. There are many events and activities planned throughout this Anniversary year to keep all members and friends busy. Your prayers and dedication during this time of transition will make this new chapter a successful and joyful time for our Church. 6 The Friendly Thrift Shop What a beautiful time of the year this is with all of the new birth of the pretty purple Crocuses, blooming and some baby rabbits checking things out! Can't you just feel that Easter, spirit everywhere in the air as our friends return home from the South, and the days are getting much longer! This month we'll be extending our Clearance Bag Sale, an extra week, ending it on Saturday April 8th. We'll also be having a fun Easter, discount sale this season! You'll pick an Easter, egg and open it to find a discount inside of 20 %, 30 % or even 50 % off! Who knows, you could be the lucky person who finds the big 50 % off egg!! Come and enjoy the fun and bring a friend along with you and have some Easter shopping fun as this sale will last for a limited time only... Our special Easter sale will start on Thursday April 13th through Saturday April 22nd. Be on the lookout as next month, May, is the 10th Anniversary, of when we put a new face lift on our Friendly Thrift Shop! There will be some excitement in the air folks with lots of fun and surprises, so be ready everyone! We're in need of gently used...pots & pans, sun hats, beach towels, rain ponchos, silverware (spoons & forks), casserole dishes, umbrellas and pie plates. 6. We'd love at this most beautiful season to give our biggest appreciation to all our helpful and valuable volunteers. It s your gifts of both time and your talents put together that helps us keep this important Ministry, going. We wish everyone a most blessed Easter season! Here s an easy variation on the ham and scalloped potatoes theme courtesy of the Cookbook Committee Ingredients: 3 T. butter or margarine ¼ cup finely chopped onion 3 T. flour ½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. dry mustard 1/8 tsp pepper 1 ½ cup milk 3 cups cubed, cooked ham 5 cups peeled & thinly-sliced potatoes Directions: 1. Preheat oven to Melt butter in a 2-quart saucepan over medium heat. 3. Stir in onion, flour, salt, dry mustard and pepper. 4. Cook over medium heat until mixture is bubbly, stirring constantly. 5. Gradually stir in milk. 6. Cook until mixture is thickened, stirring constantly. 7. Place ham cubes in an 8 x 12-iinch baking dish. 8. Arrange potatoes over ham. 9. Pour sauce on top, spreading to cover potatoes 10. Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes. 11. Stir; bake, uncovered, minutes more, or until sauce is thickened and potatoes are tender. Yields 4-6 servings
