1 Zion s Outpost Branch Newsletter Vol. 26 No. 7 The Church of Jesus Christ July, Branch Yearly Theme: Standing Fast in the Faith of Jesus Christ July Theme: Equipped for Service 2011 Study Scripture Calendar: [quote from the branch calendar prepared by Elder Gary Whiting] July Theme: Equipped for Service Nephi said that God provides His people the ability to fulfill all of His commandments given to them if only they will seek to keep them (See 1 Nephi 1:65). God calls His people into service and grants them what they need to accomplish their specific tasks. These gifts and spiritual resources are remembered and recounted in this month s theme. Remember that the Lord has decreed and will fulfill. We are sometimes ignorant of God s ability to care for us and sometimes we are just unbelieving or rebellious. This is a call to arise and put on the armor of God and go to work to bring forth and establish the kingdom of God. Read more about being Equipped for Service in the Family Devotion section on page 3. Do You Know...? NOTE: The Park City Pride Reluctantly agrees to close Food Pantry the pantry will close at the end of June. Thanks to everyone who participated in this service to the community. FAMILY DEVOTION: JULY THEME: Equipped for Service Alma 12:4-5 For they were men of a sound understanding, and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God. But this is not all: they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting, therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority, even as with the power and authority of [Other References: 2Nephi 1:36-39, Moroni 10:7-9, Alma 17:45-48 and 3Nephi 2:97] (All hymns are in The Hymnal; First Printing, November, 1956) Hymn: Let Us, Brothers, Let Us Gladly #139 Prayer: Vol. 26 No. 7 Page 3 Read Story: THE SONS OF MOSIAH [excerpts from the Book of Mormon Story, pp.62-64; Deseret Book Company, 1976]. Scripture Reference: Alma 12:1-81 THE SONS OF MOSIAH Alma was journeying from the land of Gideon to the land of Manti when, to his astonishment, he met the sons of Mosiah journeying towards the land of Zarahemla. They had been teaching the word of God for the space of fourteen years among the Lamanites. These sons of Mosiah were with Alma at the time the angel first appeared unto him, and they traveled with him throughout the land of Zarahemla, striving to repair the injuries they had done to the church. Their names were Ammon, Aaron, Omner and Himni. The sons of Mosiah desired of their father, the king, that he would grant unto them that they might go up to the land of Nephi and impart the word of God to their brethren the Lamanites. King Mosiah inquired of the Lord if he should let his sons go up among the Lamanites to preach the word, and the Lord said, Let them go, for many shall believe their words, and I will deliver thy sons out of the hands of the Lamanites. And Mosiah granted that they might go and do according to their request. When the sons of Mosiah arrived in Continued on page 5

4 Vol. 26 No. 7 Page 4 Zion s Outpost Women s Dept. Our July meeting that was rescheduled for June 20 gave us a better understand of service we can give to our community that would benefit others. Two guests from the Midway-Kansas chapter of the American Red Cross came to discuss emergency preparedness and the various services provided by the Red Cross: Jim Rutledge of Rose Hill and Dennis Miller of Clearwater. Both men are Disaster Relief Volunteers and Co-coordinators for Community Disaster Education. A video, produced by the American Red Cross, was shown; it was entitled "Be Red Cross Ready for Disaster." Mr. Rutledge emphasized the importance of getting a kit, making a plan, and being informed. Mr. Miller shared his experience of living through the Greensburg tornado; this was his impetus to get involved with the Red Cross. He also discussed the various sections of the organization: International, Blood Services, Health & Safety, Community Services, Armed Forces Emergency Services, and Disaster Services. If anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer, contact the Red Cross. A handout on emergencies was given to each of the women. Sister Pam Burford was the hostess for the evening and presented a devotion on the theme Love Your Neighbor as Yourself. Pam arranged to have a representative of the American Red Cross attend and bring information on Community Service. She read Missouri Governor Jay Nixon's remarks at the Joplin Community Memorial Service, given May 29, just one week after the EF5 tornado hit Joplin. Governor Nixon highlighted the importance of the opportunity that God gave to people in that crisis to demonstrate what it means to be a Good Samaritan and to love your neighbor. Our next meeting is not until August8 and it is at Sister Debbie Newman s home. Sister Laurie Drope will be hostess for the evening. God s blessings of direction and understanding of more practical applications as we prepare every needful thing, is my prayer for all of us. In Christ, Sister Debbie Newman Women s Department Leader P.S. Remember to read the August lesson material on the 1st day of August [or ASAP]; those attending our meetings should have read it prior to our meeting; those not attending please read prior to receiving the CDs of the meeting. Use the rest of the month to put into practice as many applications as you desire from the suggestions presented in the books. Prayer Request Please Pray for VRS staff and participants Lucy, Marty Van Nordstrand's girlfriend who is expecting her baby in August Garrick Burford, job and health concerns Burford family's legal issues Brent Burford, continuing legal issues and health care related to his 2010 car accident The Seventy Ministry throughout the world Work of the Lord in Wichita & surrounding areas The work of taking the Gospel throughout the world [Zion s Busy Bees on page 6]

5 Continued from page 3 the borders of the land of the Lamanites, they separated. Ammon went to the land of Ishmael. The Lamanites took him and bound him and carried him before the king, whose name was Lamoni. The king inquired of Ammon if it were his desire to dwell in the land among the Lamanites. Ammon said unto him, Yea, I desire to dwell among the people for a time, and perhaps until the day I die. The king was much pleased with Ammon and caused that the bands should be loosed. He would that Ammon should take one of his daughters to wife, but Ammon said unto him, Nay, but I will be thy servant. Therefore, Ammon became a servant to king Lamoni, and was sent to watch the flocks of Lamoni according to the custom of the Lamanites. After he had been in the service of the king three days, a certain number of Lamanites scattered the flocks as Ammon and the servants were driving them forth to water. The servants of the king began to murmur saying, Now the king will slay us as he has our brethren because their flocks were scattered by the wickedness of these men. They wept exceedingly because of the fear of being slain. When Ammon saw this, his heart was swollen within him with joy; for, said he, I will show forth my power unto these my fellow servants, or the power which is in me in restoring these flocks unto the king, that I may win the hearts of these my fellow servants and lead them to believe in my words. These were the thoughts of Ammon when he saw the afflictions of those whom he termed to be his brethren. He flattered them by saying, My brethren, be of good cheer and let us go in search of the flocks, and we will gather them together and bring them back into the places of water. Thus we will preserve the flocks unto the king, and he will not slay us. They rushed forth with much swiftness to head the flocks and did succeed in gathering them again to the place of water. Those men again stood to scatter their flocks, but Ammon said unto his brethren., Encircle the flocks round abut that they flee not, and I will go and contend with these men who do scatter our flocks. They did as Ammon commanded them, and he went forth and stood to contend with those who stood by the waters of Sebus. They were in number not a few; therefore, they did not fear Ammon, for thy supposed that one of their men could slay him according to their pleasure. They knew not that the Lord had promised Mosiah that he would deliver his sons out of their lands; neither did they know anything concerning the Lord; Vol. 26 No. 7 Page 5 therefore, they delighted in the destruction of their brethren. For this cause they stood to scatter the flocks of the king. Ammon stood forth and with mighty power began to cast stones at them with his sling. He slew a certain number of them insomuch that they began to be astonished at his power; nevertheless they were angry because of the slain of their brethren, and were determined that he should fall. Seeing that they could not hit him with their stones, they came forth with clubs to slay him. Ammon did withstand their blows by smiting their arms with the edge of his sward, insomuch that they began to be astonished and began to flee before him. When he had driven them afar off, he returned and watered the flocks and returned them to the pasture of the king. King Lamoni caused that his servants should stand forth and testify to all the things which they had seen concerning the faithfulness of Ammon in preserving his flocks. When they had all testified of Ammon s great power in contending against those who sought to slay him, king Lamoni was astonished exceedingly and said, Surely this is more than a man. Is not this the Great Spirit who doth send such great punishments upon this people because of their murders? They answered the king and said, Whether he be the Great Spirit or a man, we know not; but this much we do know, that he cannot be slain by the enemies of the king. Neither can they scatter the king s flocks when he is with us because of his expertness and great strength. Therefore, we know that he is a friend to the king. When the king heard these words, he said utno them, Now I know it is the Great Spirit, and he has come down at this time to preserve your lives that I might not slay you as I did your brethren. Lamoni began to fear exceedingly lest he had done wrong in slaying his servants, for he had slain many of them because their brethren had scattered their flocks at the place of water. King Lamoni inquired of his servants saying, Where is this man that has such great power? They said unto him, He is feeding thy horses. Now the king had commanded his servants previous to the time of the watering of their flocks that they should prepare his horses and chariots and conduct him forth to the land of Nephi; for there had been a great feast appointed at the land of Nephi by the father of Lamoni who was king over all the land. When king Lamoni heard that Am Continued on page 7
