1 Zion s Outpost Branch Newsletter 2013 Branch Yearly Theme: The Ye May Be Lifted Up at the Last Day Theme: Having the Love of God Always in Your Hearts Vol. 28 No. 11 The Church of Jesus Christ November, Study Scripture Calendar: scripture reading and theme calendar prepared by Seventy Gary Whiting Theme: Having the Love of God Always in Your Hearts WEEKLY READINGS: Week 1: Jude 1:20-25 Week 2: Romans 8:1-8 Week 3: 1 John 4:7-21 Week 4: 4 Nephi 1:17-21 Week 5: Moroni 7:50-53 The following is a quote from the scripture calendar: Charity is the chief of the gifts of God to us (1 Corinthians 13:13). Mormon said that anyone who is found to have charity at the last day, it will be well with that person (Moroni 7:52). John wrote about God s character in his letter we know as 1 John. In that letter he emphasized two aspects of God for us. He wrote that God is light and absolutely free from any darkness and that God is love. (Scripture Calendar quote continued on page 4) F.Y.I. Special Music: Anna Burford offered her musical ministry during the 11am service on September 29. The music Anna played was Where er You Walk by George F. Handle. Anna was accompanied by Sister Pam Burford. Church Work Day Projects : The Thursday prior to the work day October 5, Dave Newman tilled the ground in front of the church where the big tree used to stand before the ice storm last November. With the anticipation of heavy rain arriving on Friday during the night [but didn t happen], the new sod was laid on Friday. With the help of David s assistants, Naomi, Anna, & Dwight Burford and also Debbie Newman [pictured: Dave, Anna & Naomi]. the sod project was completed [see pic in left column]. The project on Saturday [the actual work day] was striping and staining the threshold at the entrance to the church and painting the frames around the garage doors. More coats will need to be applied to both. JCRB Conference: October the U.S. National Conference was held in Independence, MO. You will find a report of the conference on page 7. International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church: November 10, 2013 has been designated as a day to observe prayer. The International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP) is a global day of intercession for persecuted Christians worldwide. We also encourage prayer for the souls of the oppressors, the nations that promote persecution, and those who ignore it. On page 5 you ll find the I Commit to Pray flyer from the Voice of the Martyrs website. It contains 7 days of suggestions for our prayer as we uplift the persecuted church. Let us stand with those who share our faith [Psalm 10:17]. Branch Business Meeting:. 3 (F.Y.I. Continued from page 1) the world will have little to nothing if people don t respond. Our opportunity to do so is through the Samaritan's Purse organization. They find the countries and children to minister to through the generosity of people like you. All you need is a shoe box [or 2, 3, 4...you determine the number], fill them up with things that kids like or need: things that make a small face smile with excitement and joy, then fill out an envelope for your donation of $7 for each box [that covers shipping] and bring them to the church by November 24. The boxes, envelopes, suggestions of items to fill boxes and all the instructions are provided at the church. You can also read all about Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box drive on Samaritan's Purse website: Advent Wreath Devotions: The four Sundays before Christmas, beginning on December 1, we will have an Advent Devotion at the 11am worship service. The devotions will be delivered by family units; please contact Debbie Newman by Nov. 10 to volunteer your family for a Sunday. We encourage families to gather quickly following Sunday School period so all will be ready to begin the devotions promptly at 11am. Hanging of the Greens: December 1 is the day we will decorate the church in Christmas colors. Following the 11am service we will promptly begin decorating; the adults up stairs while the children are down stairs decorating the tree. As soon as the decorating is finished, chili will be served for lunch. Please RSVP to Debbie Newman by Nov. 17. 4 Women s Department 2013: Dear Sister in Christ, Preparation for the 2014 women s study continues. The Restoration Women s Ministries committee is working together on a study The Power to Become. This study is based on a women s study book Power to Become that was written by Inez (Peggy) Vest in That study has six chapters. The committee has added 4 more lessons that support the study book for a total of 10 lessons. There will not be a meeting in June and the July meeting will still be the month for our annual service project. In December we will have our Advent Fellowship worship as we have in the past. The study notebooks will be handed out early in January. If you are not receiving our WD study and would like to, or if you know of anyone who would desire to receive our 2014 study, let me know and I will send it. With the study notebook each month you will receive a CD of the WD lesson of the Program Leader during the monthly WD meeting and any handouts. I would ask for your continued prayers as the study is completed. Thank you! On page 3 is an invitation to our adult Advent Fellowship on December 8. I hope you can attend. God bless and be with you as you seek for The Peaceable Things of the Kingdom. Your Servant and Sister in Christ, Debbie Newman Zion s Outpost Women s Department Leader ~2013 Zion s Busy Bees Quilt Group: The next planned meetings are November 19 & December 17. For more details concerning the meetings and quilt projects, contact Sandy Whiting or Martha Van Nordstrand (Scripture Calendar quote continued from page 1) Mormon defines charity as the pure love of Christ (Moroni 7:53). Being pure, the love is untainted and clean. There are no illegitimate motives in it. As love it is the same love that emanates from the very heart of God. It is the love that sent Jesus to the cross... and raised Him from the dead. Mormon says that charity is worth an all out effort on our part to obtain. Without charity we are nothing. Paul said the same thing in different words in the opening of 1 Corinthians 13. It is pure. It endures. It brings blessing. It is a gift and it must be sought for. We are counseled by Mormon to pray to the Father with all the energy of our hearts that we may be filled with this love. It is the mark of the true follower of Jesus Christ. It is the essential character of the sons of God. When Jesus returns to set up His kingdom, this is what He will be looking for. If our hearts are filled with this love, we will be just like Him when He returns. He means that we will be pure just like He is pure. Read the FAMILY DEVOTION that begins on page 3 for more about this month s theme. Sing Hymn: #458 O brother man Prayer: Vol. 28 No. 11 Page 4 (Family Devotion continued from page 3) Story: November 13 THESE ARE HIS SEED Mosiah 8: Nephi 1:17-20 Undoubtedly, the priests and the king squirmed under the blazing words of truth that fell from the mouth of the bold prophet Abinadi; his shining countenance and searching eyes surely must have pierced their black hearts momentarily with remorse. He spoke of God s ascension into heaven, of His mercy and compassion toward the children of men, standing betwixt them and justice, having broken the bands of death, taken upon Himself their iniquity and their transgressions, having redeemed them and satisfied the demands of justice. And now, Abinadi asked, Who shall declare His generation? Behold,...when His soul has been made an offering for sin, He shall see His seed; and now, what say ye? And who shall be His seed?...whoever hath heard the words of the prophets...which have prophesied concerning the coming of the Lord...who hath hearkened to their words and believed that the Lord would redeem His people and have looked forward...for a remission of their sins...that these are His seed, or...heirs of the kingdom of God. (Family Devotion continued on page 6)

6 (Family Devotion continued from page 4) For these are they whose sins He hath borne, these are they for whom He hath died to redeem them from their transgressions; and now, are they not His seed? queried, Abinadi. Do you wonder what lies the priests taught concerning salvation? Vol. 28 No. 11 Page 6 Copied from Restoration Voice, November/December 1993 REMEMBERING CHIRST DURING THE HOLIDAYS By Albert Costa, Jr. Forney, Texas HYMN MEDITAITON: Hymns of the Restoration, Hymn 152, Waiting and Watching ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Read: 4 Nephi 1:21: [boldness added for emphasis] And how blessed were they, for the Lord did bless them in all their doings; yea, even they were blessed and prospered, until an hundred and ten years had passed away; and the first generation from Christ had passed away, and there was no contention in all the land. 7 (F.Y.I continued from page 1) Vol. 28 No. 11 Page 7 US National Conference Oct 10-13, 2013 Report by David Newman The theme for the conference was Prepare for the Coming Vision. The purpose of the conference was to begin the process, which will continue at the April General Conference in 2014, of determining the Lords vision for the conference (this part of his church). We will especially focus on setting goals for the following 2 years. At the US National conference this year we were introduced to the process. We had 8 excellent presentations designed to stimulate our thinking in determining Gods vision for the General Conference. The following is a brief statement of each presentation on the day they presented. The bold words mission, family, youth and education are the four categories that goals will be formulated by the conference body at the April 2014 conference. Thursday: (1) Seventy Bob Moore led off with a retrospective look at the conference from its beginning to where it is today. (2 ) High Priest Chuck Perry shared with us the importance of having a Vision. He also emphasized that we must step out in that vision or nothing would be accomplished. And (3) Patriarch Fred Green introduced the visioning process and emphasized that the visioning process would help us answer the question Where are We Going?. Friday: (4) The Seventy in attendance (about 15) shared their individual activities during 2013 and some of their hopes and plans for the near future. They have been very active with much success. This was very encouraging to hear. (5) High Priest Dan Sherer encouraged all of us to be engaged in the mission of spreading the gospel and that all members are called to share the good news of Jesus Christ. He challenged us to find ways to engage in the mission individually and as a body. Saturday: (6) Elder David Bates and Sister Karen Bates (husband and wife team) shared how Jesus Christ and the Gospel teachings could be integrated into every day family life. Much of what they shared was from personal experience. (7) Elder Chris Taylor emphasized the need for developing opportunities for the youth. Much of his presentation came from his involvement, over the past 7 years, with the 2000 Strong youth camps which are held in Texas. (8) Elder Kent Pedersen, a retired teacher, shared of the need to not only educate our children but also adults, especially new members. Parents need to be involved in the education of their children and he was supportive of home schooling also. On Thursday and Saturday there were two short business sessions. In the first business session we passed a policy statement that would prohibit Military Chaplains of our church from participating in any unions other than between one man and one woman. This was done as a request from Elder Jared A. Watson a military chaplain sponsored by the Conference. He and other Chaplains of other faiths as well have been working to get support from their respective churches. We were anxious to support his request in support of the doctrine of Christ. In the Saturday session we passed a similar policy regarding all priesthood of the church. No other resolutions were passed. Each evening we were blessed by the preaching ministry of: Seventy Ron Smith on Thursday; Seventy Gary Whiting on Friday; Seventy Gary Metzger on Saturday. Sunday morning we participated in the Lords Supper and afterwards Patriarch Fred Green brought the message. Every morning began with a prayer service which were well attended and the good Spirit was present. The congregational singing at all services was uplifting as was the special music throughout the conference. Thanks to the excellent work of the technical services team the conference was streamed real time and the Presentations and Preaching Services are available on on the Home page on the right side, find a box for 2013 U.S. National Conference Webcast and click on Ustream then
