4 NH Right to Life Petition No More Tax Dollars to Abortion Providers On June 21, the Executive Council voted 4 1 to approve contracts with Planned Parenthood of New England and The Equality Center in Concord to the tune of $440,000. Sadly, only Executive Councilor Dave Wheeler voted NO on this contract. Executive Councilors, Joe Kenney, Russell Prescott, Chris Pappas, and Andru Volinsky voted YES. More future funding will be requested of that you can be sure. And, NHRTL would like to show solidarity in our STOP FUNDING ABORTION campaign. NHRTL believes it is way past time to say NO to our hard-earned taxpayer dollars being sent to abortion providers. Private businesses should support themselves and the taxpayer should not be forced to subsidize abortion activities. Period. If you feel strongly that Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers should NOT be receiving our tax dollars, we ask you to sign this petition and share with others to do so as well. NHRTL will then turn this petition over to Governor Sununu to demonstrate NH citizens do not approve of this public policy. Please, take a moment and sign this petition. We must work together to stop the policy of subsidizing abortion here in New Hampshire one signature at a time! Click here to sign our petition. This is an ongoing year round program. They are having a national publicity push this fall and targeted events in cities around the country. In NH Manchester was selected. The goal is to prevent the loss of life by installing smoke detectors and helping families with fire evacuation plans if they ever fall victim to a fire. What can your council do? Ask for volunteers to be trained to install the smoke detectors and educate residents on evacuation plans. The Red Cross will supply the smoke detectors. Then promote the program in your parish and your town. You can also if you choose run a fundraiser to increase awareness and help the Red Cross fund the on going costs. 8 Protecting the Name of the Order (7/16/2017) Brothers: As with any enterprise that wants to maintain its individuality and personality it is important to protect those signs, names and symbols that set them apart from all others. This is done through the acquisition of a registration mark from the government in which the entity exists. In the US and most of the western world this is referred to as a trademark, marcus registrad or (enlarged for clarity). You may have noticed that the Emblem of our Order, the names K of C and Knights of Columbus all bear this significant mark. The names and the emblem should always be displayed with the mark. The Fourth Degree and Squires Circle Emblems are similarly registered and protected. This is a signal to all that the use is restricted to the holder of the registration. In our instance the holder is the Supreme Council, not the individual Councils nor the State Council. In short O N L Y the Supreme Council can say who can use those registered items. A blanket permissive use by a Council for a Council/Assembly function only (dinner dance, food drive, degree exemplification and the like) has been granted by Supreme. However, or more to the point HOWEVER, the names or the emblem may not be used in a business enterprise without the explicit written permission of Supreme. Gaming operations by a Council are, by New Hampshire law, a not-for-profit business venture and neither the Emblems of the Order, the names K of C or Knights of Columbus are to be used in identifying the operation of such enterprises with the Order. Gaming operations need to be registered with the Secretary of State and received a license/permit from the lottery agency. The volunteer work by Members of a council at such events may be a Council function, but the organization and operation of the enterprise is not a Council function. Thus Council # is supporting a poker night at (where ever) and Members can, and should identify themselves. The Council cannot register themselves as the operator of the gaming night with the Secretary of State, a separate associated entity can. Once registered with the Secretary of State the Council then becomes, even if only for gaming, a business enterprise regulated by the State. We are a fraternity, a 501(c)8, not a standalone charity under IRS law. There are very significant legal ramification for violating this stricture. We are, however, a charity under the very broad definition of a charity under NH law. If your Council has a gaming operation, immediately file a change of name with the Secretary of State that removes the phrase Knights of Columbus or K of C from the name of the registered enterprise. The name of the separate entity can be Council NH Bingo (or whatever), just avoid the registered names or the Emblem of the Order. Set up separate books (a requirement of State law anyway), rules, officers (can be the same a Council Officers), etc. as if a Home Association, for the gaming operation. Keep all finances, records of the gaming operation separate from those of the Council. Do not discuss the business of the separate gaming operation during regular business meetings of the Council. Continue to accept donations from that separate business enterprise into your charitable accounts, but treat them as an outside source of revenue the same as you would proceeds from a dinner dance, not as internal Council funds. Yes, this is a bit of extra work, but it protects the Order from any untoward incidents that may arise. P a g e 8

9 Oh yes, while BINGO is often a trademark of the Catholic Church for fund raising, gaming operations are frowned upon by the Church in general and the diocese in particular. We need to be about our work of helping people, not having state or federal agencies dictating how or what we do as an Order, that is the bottom line. NO COUNCIL SHOULD HAVE ITSELF REGISTERED WITH THE SECRETARY OF STATE! If your Council is otherwise registered with the Secretary of State, unregistered immediately. If a bank says that you have to be registered with the Secretary of State, tell them they are misinformed. Your State Officers can assist you in this educational process. If they will not budge, there are several banks in NH that know the Order very well and who are happy to hold council funds Jordan Ulery State Advocate Upcoming Degree Exemplifications ALL FIRST DEGREES: Please contact First Degree Team Captain as soon as possible to inform him of candidates and number of spectators. 14 Sound the Alarm. Save a Life. Partnership Opportunities Neighbors Helping Neighbors A home fire can strike anywhere, anytime devastating families. On average, more lives are lost to home fires every year than to all other major disasters combined. But, together, we can change this. The Red Cross and partners are tackling this problem head on. Volunteers go door-to-door, educating residents on the importance of escape plans and working smoke alarms and go one step further by installing free smoke alarms, if needed. The Red Cross is committed to installing 2.5 million alarms, and already our efforts are paying off. As of June 2017, 258 lives have been saved and over 840,450 smoke alarms have been installed thanks to Red Cross and partner volunteers. Your organization can be part of the solution by participating in the Sound the Alarm events from September 23 October 15, Sept. 17 th ~ 22 nd - Rally Day Sept. 23 rd - Rutland, VT Sept. 24 th ~ 30 th - All of New Hampshire and Vermont Oct. 1 st ~ 6 th - Rally Day Oct. 7 th - East Manchester, NH Oct. 8 th ~13 th - Rally Day Oct. 14 th - West Manchester, NH On average, 7 people die and 36 people are injured in home fires in the U.S. every day. On average, Red Cross workers help a family affected by a home fire or other disaster 180 times a day. Over $7 billion in property damage occurs every year due to home fires. Smoke alarms cut the risk of death from a fire in half. Possibilities include: Pre-Event Canvassing. Go door-to-door and talk with residents about the importance of smoke alarms and having family escape plans, while informing them about upcoming installation events. Smoke Alarm Installation. On installation days, canvass neighborhoods with ladders and screwdrivers in hand, installing smoke alarms in homes that need them. Volunteers will also provide fire and disaster safety education to family members. Lunch and Learn. P a g e 8

23 Oh yes, while BINGO is often a trademark of the Catholic Church for fund raising, gaming operations are frowned upon by the Church in general and the diocese in particular. 28 Sound the Alarm. Is a presentation at your facility instructing smoke alarm placement, fire safety and disaster preparedness. Participants will also be given free battery operated smoke alarms. Additional Support - Pre-event and day-of event help with materials and event logistics - Provide financial and/or in kind sponsorships - Spread the word in your community Sponsorship Opportunities - $10,000 Title Sponsor - $5,000, $2,500, $1,000 By working together, we will help save lives and reduce injuries, strengthening our community s ability to be resilient in the face of any disaster large or small. Sound the Alarm with Us To find out more about how you can get involved or continue your involvement in the Sound the Alarm event, contact Stephanie Couturier at Ext. 219 or Stephanie.Couturier@redcross.org For more information, go to SoundTheAlarm.org.

29 7/16/2017 Gmail - Protecting the Name of the Order Tim Kingsley <tjkingsley23@gmail.com> Protecting the Name of the Order 1 message Jordan Ulery <jordanulery@comcast.net> To: tjkingsley@comcast.net Cc: Glenn Camley <gpcamley@gmail.com> Thu, Jul 13, 2017 at 12:55 PM Tim, please include this in the next installment of the Update. Glenn, I hope this may be distributed to the DDs as well? Jordan 7/13/2017 Brothers: As with any enterprise that wants to maintain its individuality and personality it is important to protect those signs, names and symbols that set them apart from all others. The name of the separate entity 1/2
