OFFICE OF THE BISHOP DIOCESE OF MANCHESTER Sunday, July 17, 2016 Dear Brothers and Sisters, I write this letter after having celebrated the Sunday Liturgy. Having brought many intentions to that Liturgy, not least among them the current civil unrest in our country, the recent mass shooting in Orlando, the deaths of law enforcement officers in Dallas, the sufferings of so many on Bastille Day in Nice, the attack on the airport and subsequent attempted coup in Turkey, the many who cry out in grief and mourning in our country and throughout the world, and certainly those in the Middle East who have been relegated to the back pages of the news while their suffering nonetheless escalates daily, I came out of that Liturgy to be confronted with another atrocity, this time in Baton Rouge s streets, attacking our law enforcement community. Calamity in our streets and the rampant seething of perverse evil in our world, always seeking more to devour, causes me to wonder how each of these horrors can be met with the same tired phrases of shock and outrage and now-routine expressions of sympathy. One would think that by now there would be a clear sense that an ongoing expression of evil is present in our time, and that individual and collective sin not only allows this but fosters its spread and that our reflexive responses ignore this reality. We as individual Catholics and the entire Church must do more. Therefore I am calling on every Catholic in the Diocese of Manchester to engage in an act of solidarity in faith. We will not stand, but bow before God, in prayers and acts of atonement. I direct, in accordance with the teaching, governing and sanctifying office of the diocesan bishop, that: 1) Friday, August 12, 2016 is to be a day of fast and partial abstinence (meat may be eaten only at one meal), for all Catholics in solidarity of faith for reparation for the sins that have brought us to this deteriorating condition of war and civil unrest. These sins are many and personal and I ask everyone to join this communal penance to make amends and especially to pray for the conversion of hardened hearts. For all persons between the ages of 18 and 59 and not otherwise unable to fast, one full meal and two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal may be taken. Meat is to be consumed only once that day, at the main meal. 2) On Sunday, August 14, 2016, the Twentieth Sunday of Ordinary Time Catholic Mass Prayers on this day are to be taken from Masses For Various Needs and Occasions: In Time of War or Civil Disturbance. Readings, however, are to be of the Sunday. 3) Monday, August 15, 2016, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary (a Holy Day in the Catholic Calendar) a) Mass will be celebrated with highest solemnity. Because the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls on a Monday this year, the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated. However, I urge all Catholics to make every attempt to attend Mass that day regardless. Page 3 of 19

b) Churches throughout the state will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, accompanied by recitation of the Rosary (Luminous Mysteries) and the Litany of Loreto (Litany of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary). Historically, the Rosary is prayed during times of war and unrest as a special appeal to the Virgin Mary for peace. Some parishes will also have a procession with a picture, statue, banner or icon of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. Please see your parish bulletin or contact your parish office for details. I also ask religious leaders of all persuasions, and all people of good will, to join with their respective communities or, in the interior recesses of their hearts, to unite with us in observing these days as special opportunities for introspection and commitment to healing by putting our best selves forward and leaving all darkness of thought, word, and deed behind. I make this request in the sincere hope that through such gestures we may come to a fuller understanding that despite differences in culture, background, and experience, we are all made in the image and likeness of God and worthy of respect. Therefore let us encourage one another in faith and let us gather together in this moment as a visible sign of hope in our world. I entrust this action of solidarity with our Holy Father Pope Francis, with the bishops of Orlando, Dallas, and Baton Rouge, and with people of faith throughout the United States and the world for atonement, reparation and healing peace to us all in the sure and certain hope that God does not disappoint and will count this as a moment of blessing and deepest Mercy. Sincerely yours in Christ, +Peter A. Libasci Most Reverend Peter A. Libasci, D.D. Bishop of Manchester Office of the Bishop Diocese of Manchester 153 Ash Street P. O. 5 BISHOP LIBASCI CALLS FOR DAYS OF PRAYER, FASTING, AND ATONEMENT FOR PEACE Page 5 of 19

BISHOP LIBASCI CALLS FOR DAYS OF PRAYER, FASTING, AND ATONEMENT FOR PEACE Call for Catholics and all people of good will to act in solidarity for an end to violence in the U.S. and worldwide on August 12, 14 and 15 (MANCHESTER) The Most Reverend Peter A. Libasci, tenth Bishop of Manchester, today issued a call for Catholics to engage in prayer and perform acts of repentance in response to the ongoing violence here in the U.S. and worldwide. The current civil unrest in our country, the acts of unspeakable violence in Orlando, Dallas, Baton Rouge, and in Nice, France, the violence and political instability in Turkey, and the ongoing suffering in the Middle East all are clear expressions of a rampant evil in our time, said Bishop Libasci. We, as individual Catholics as well as the Church as a whole, must do more. In a letter addressed to Catholics throughout the state, he asked that the faithful commit to a day of fasting and partial abstinence on Friday, August 12. He also directed that special prayers for peace be said at Masses statewide on Sunday, August 14, and urged Catholics to attend church on Monday, August 15, for Mass and for additional prayers for peace. In his letter, Bishop Libasci also asked religious leaders of all persuasions, and all people of good will to join Catholics in solidarity as a visible sign of hope in our world. I am calling on all people to pray for an end to violence, said Bishop Libasci. Regardless of our differing religious beliefs, or differences in culture and background, the ongoing bloodshed in our country and abroad unites us in shock, horror and outrage. Let us turn to Almighty God with acts of atonement and reparation and ask Him to grant to our world His healing peace. The full text of Bishop Libasci s letter can be found here. # # # The Diocese of Manchester is the Roman Catholic Church in New Hampshire, serving the needs of more than 264,000 Catholics. 9 State Vocations Report "Be not afraid!" this has been the exhortation of God from the beginning, to Saint Peter, the Rock, to Mary, Jesus' mother; who said YES, to Saint Joseph who was going to send Mary away to avoid scandal but the angel said "be not afraid" and in 1979 after his election as the 264th Pope, Karol Wojtyla took the name pope John Paul II on the balcony at the Vatican on the night of his election said, :Be not afraid." In 1988 Pope John Paul II established the WYD where young people by the thousands came to hear what the Pope had to say and from these meetings every year hundreds of young men and women took their vows to be priests and sisters. Somehow in New Hampshire it doesn't seem to have taken affect. Now in the year 2016 there is a resurgence of young men and women going into discernment. Due to the Councils, Assemblies, Circles, of Knights of Columbus our young men and young women are growing in numbers and through your great and strong support they are flourishing. 10 Dear Brother Knights: All citizens of the United States have the right to vote. All Catholic citizens should become active and informed participants in the political life of their local community and their country. Brady Council 5093 Hampton, New Hampshire July 24 th 2016 Dear Brother Knights, As many of you know the State Kidney Fund has been around for over 20 years. It was designed to assist people receiving dialysis who were in need of financial help to purchase their medications. With recent changes to medicare and medicaid the need for help is nowhere near as great as it once was. This opens up a whole new opportunity for the Kidney Fund, and that is to include transplant patients as well. The need for financial help in this area is huge. In order to include transplant Page 11 of 19

patients in our program we need to pass an amendment to the bylaws, this will not happen until the 2017 State Convention. So what can we do to address this need now? The best way is to establish a temporary separate program called the K of C State Kidney Transplant Fund. Money donated to this account will be used to assist people who have had a kidney transplant and are in need of financial help. After the 2017 State Convention (as long as the amendment passes) we will be able to use the original kidney fund money for both dialysis and transplant patients. So, going forward if you are making a donation to the Kidney Fund please make your check out to K of C Council 5093, on the memo line write: Kidney Transplant Fund and mail it to: Knights of Columbus Council 5093 C/O David Hagen P.O. Box 2052, Hampton NH, This will allow us to help many more people in New Hampshire who are in dire need of our help for these life saving drugs. Thank you very much for your cooperation with this very important matter. Vivat Jesus David J. Hagen State Kidney Fund Chairman dehagen@comcast.net Salem, NH becomes a Baby Safe Haven Article by: Doug Ireland direland@eagletribune.com, June 9, 2016 SALEM, N.H. The town has joined communities around the state and nation committed to protecting newborns abandoned by their parents. Soon, there will be bright yellow signs placed at the police and fire stations designating each as a Baby Safe Haven. The goal is to reduce the number of tragic incidents involving infants given up by parents who can t properly care for the babies, according to David Thompson of the Bishop Peterson Council of the Knights of Columbus in Salem. It s hoped the community can come together to save a young life that could be in danger if not for the efforts of police and Fire Department personnel who would be on the lookout 24/7 for babies dropped off at their stations. The local chapter of the national service organization is helping to increase participation in the Baby Safe Haven program under New Hampshire s Safe Haven Law, passed by the state Legislature in Page 12 of 19

RSA 132-A is aimed at preventing newborns from being abandoned by offering protection from prosecution to the parents, according to Rob Eib of Kingston, Safe Haven spokesman for the nights New Hampshire council. We have taken it upon ourselves to inform the public about Safe Haven, Eib said, noting every state has its own Safe Haven law. Nationwide, 70 infants were saved last year through Safe Haven, Eib said. He did not know how many have been saved in the state since the 13-year-old law s inception, but did say they include a baby who was turned over in Portsmouth last year. Salem s active participation in the program could mean all the difference at a time when unwanted infants are sometimes abandoned and later found dead in plastic bags, Thompson said. This law is a better alternative than having abortions or just leaving a baby after putting it in a bag... Thompson told Salem officials. Thompson described the initiative to Town Manager Leon Goodwin and selectmen at their meeting earlier this week, seeking their support. He was accompanied by Police Chief Paul Donovan, who backs the program, as does Fire Chief Paul Parisi. Goodwin said he supports the effort and would help raise awareness of Salem as a Safe Haven by ensuring the signs provided by the Knights free of charge are installed. The police station is at 9 Veterans Memorial Parkway and the Central Fire Station is at 152 Main St. I think this is a good program and I fully endorse it, oodwin said. Eib said one big problem is that not many Granite State residents are familiar with the law. It s a law that is a sparsely known law, he said. That prompted the Knights of Columbus to launch a public awareness campaign earlier this year through the efforts of New Hampshire Deputy Wayne Griffin, Eib said. The law mandates that the child not be more than 7 days old, that the newborn be handed to a person at the Safe Haven, and that the parent cannot say they will return for the infant. The child would be cared for at the Safe Haven temporarily until the state Department of Health and Human Services intervenes. The parent would not be questioned, but may be presented information. The list of communities that say they will post Safe Haven signs to help reduce infant abandonment is steadily growing, Eib said. Others advancing the program include Bedford, Milford and Rochester, he said. In addition to police and fire stations, safe havens can also be a church or hospital. Eib is optimistic that efforts to protect unwanted infants will receive a big boost in New Hampshire as more communities sign on to the program. There is really no reason for local towns not to want to participate, Eib said. I anticipate it will be well received. Page 13 of 19

BUILDING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH BY PROMOTION OF THE FAMILY ROSARY As leaders in the Catholic community, it is incumbent upon us to strengthen the ties with our parishes and its families. We need to understand that strong faith filled families are the bases for a vibrant parish and for prospective members in the Knights of Columbus. What better way to strengthen the Catholic family than through the Holy Rosary. Many times Our Lady has told is what we must do to grow closer to her Son, strengthening ourselves to fight the ongoing cultural and spiritual battles we face every day; to fortify ourselves to build a culture of love and life. Since last summer, Mary Ann and I have been visiting councils and parishes to promote this program. The centerpiece is a statue of Our Blessed Mother which will travel from home to home on weekly or bi-weekly intervals. Families will be edified and uplifted spiritually by praying the Rosary together on a regular basis. Councils may take up the mantle alone or work with their respective parishes. With our faith and freedoms under attack constantly, we need the Holy Rosary more than ever. As to date the following Councils and/or parishes have begun the Pilgrim Virgin Program: Greenville, and in Nashua, Milford, Goffstown; St. Raphael-Manchester; St. Louis degonzague- Nashua and St. Joseph Cathedral in Manchester. If you d like, Mary Ann and I are willing to visit your council to give you a brief presentation about the program. Just give us advance notice of a few weeks. We will travel for Our Lady! You can me at rddistasio@comcast.net or phone me at OUR COUNTRY AND OUR FAMILES WILL BE HEALED THROUGH THE INTERCESSION OF OUR BLESSED MOTHER!! UPDATE ON JANET AND SK KEN GODDARD, FDD Brother Knights: Many of you know that a fire occurred in Nashua on July 17. What you may not know is that a brother Knight and his family were displaced in that fire. Ken Goddard and his wife, Janet, were victims of this fire and escaped with just the clothes on their backs. While they hope to salvage any remaining belongings that they can from their home soon, they will not be able to move back in and are currently living with relatives The Knights are often called to serve others, but now we are being called to serve one of our own. Ken is a dedicated council member for as Deputy Grand Knight and has served previously on the state level as well. Council has provided Ken and his family immediate funds from our account this past week, but long term needs will need to be met a Page 14 of 19
