10 State Charity Raffle Tickets and Funds Worthy Grand Knights, Summer is coming to an end and we only have a short few weeks remaining before the NH State Ball on October 11 th. Now is the time to press onward on the sale of the NH State Charity Raffle Tickets, and plan for your Councils attendance at the 2014 State Ball to be held at the Pheasant Ridge Country Club in Gilford, NH. Hopefully by now you are in the process of completing the sale of all your tickets and are now putting together (ticket stubs and funds) and preparing to turn them in at the State Ball. Remember, at the NH State Ball on October 11th, you will need to turn in all sold ticket stubs, and all money collected. Please submit a single check from your Council for the full amount of your ticket sales to expedite your submission. Further details may be found at the State Website. Remember to submit the form to let the State Secretary know to whom to cut the checks for your Council s to distribute to. However, if your council sees that it will be unable to complete its obligation to sell all the books of tickets that they received this year, contact me. I have councils that are eager to obtain additional blocks of books. NOW is the time to make that assessment, so I can reallocate those tickets to another council, in time for them to sell them! It benefits no-one to bring blocks of unsold tickets in October to the State Ball. Help us be successful in exceeding last year s total sales. Hope to see you at the Ball. Libasci has issued a letter in advance of New Hampshire s September 9 primary election calling upon Catholics in the Diocese of Manchester to be citizens who will work first and foremost for the good of others... to benefit all people, especially the unborn, the poor, the forgotten elderly. Bishop Peter A. Libasci developed a document, Conscience and Your Vote, to assist others in understanding the nature of conscience and the moral obligation to vote and to outline Catholic social teaching on some of today s pressing issues. The document is based on the shared faith and human understanding we possess as Catholics. This document is not a voter guide. The Diocese of Manchester does not in any way endorse a particular candidate, political party, or political action committee. This resource was developed to assist others in understanding the nature of conscience and the moral obligation to vote and to outline Catholic social teaching on some of today s pressing issues. When reading this document take special notice to "What are the areas that merit special attention and concern by voters?" Take special note to LIFE and FAMILY when you vote. Think to yourself what candidate respects the majority of my Catholic (that's Catholic with a capital "C") beliefs. If you also read Forming Conscience for Faithful Citizenship from The USCCB call to attention the introduction the moral and human challenges outlined that remain as pressing national issues. In particular several current and fundamental problems involving opposition to intrinsic evils aimed at life and the family which raise serious moral questions: Continuing destruction of unborn children through abortion and other threats to the lives and dignity of others who are vulnerable, sick, or unwanted; Intensifying efforts to redefine marriage and enact measures which undermine marriage as the permanent, faithful, and fruitful union of one man and one woman and a fundamental moral and social institution essential to the common good; The failure to repair a broken immigration system with comprehensive measures that promote true respect for law, protect the human rights and dignity of immigrants and refugees, recognize their contributions to our nation, keep families together, and advance the common good; (See attached for Bishop Peter's letter to go along with the above) Viva Jesus. 13 INSURANCE REPORT Insurance Delegate Edward F. Mele, Jr., PSD It is with great honor that I submit this annual report to the Knights of Columbus here in New Hampshire about the condition of the insurance of the Order. With all the pomp and ceremony of the hundreds of Cardinals, Bishops, priests, deacons and seminarians and the thousands of brother knights and their families a wonderful week of activities took place at the beautiful Orlando Marriott Hotel in Florida. Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson s annual report on all of the assets of the Order was very outstanding. The Insurance of the Knights of Columbus is the strength of the Order. For 39 continuous years the Knights of Columbus earned A M Bests highest rating of A++ (Superior). This rating is reserved for only a select number of companies that have superior ability to meet their ongoing insurance obligations This year the Knights of Columbus has been recognized by the Ethisphere Institute, an independent center promoting best practices in Corporate ethics and governance as a 2014 Worlds Most Ethical Company, as one of only two such companies in the life insurance category. And the Knights of Columbus is one of only 144 honorees worldwide. We also continue to rank among Americas largest companies, ranking number 935 on this year s Fortune 1000 list. Our assets grew 5.8 per cent last year and now have more than $ 20.5 billion with a surplus ratio at 11.7 per cent which is higher than the industry average. Our insurance in force reached $94.7 billion and our insurance grew in force by $ 4.27 billion, 78,000 life certificates were insured last year over 30,000 more than closest fraternal benefit society competitor. There are more than 1,571,000 life certificates in force and our five year sales growth of more than 22 per cent stands in marked contrast to the industry as a whole which during this same time, saw sales decline by nearly 13 per cent. There are nearly 1,500 brother Knights in our professional agency force serving only Knights and their families. To provide financial security for young families, a new Young Adult Insurance Program has been launched. It provides annual renewable term insurance to Knights and their spouses ages Our low lapse rate is the best measurement of customer satisfaction. Our insurance premiums reached nearly $ 1.14 billion in Our 3.6 per cent decrease is less than one - third the industry rate decrease of 11.4 per cent, our annuity deposits were at $ 594 million. Our members stay with our insurance products because they offer the protection they promise when it s needed most. Last year we paid more than $ 314 million in death benefits, also paid more than $ 276 million in dividends. The quality test for any insurance company is the strength of its financial platform, that is, the degree to which its assets exceeds its liabilities. Once again our $ 1.9 billion surplus, to which Standard & Poor says that the Knights of Columbus is extremely strong at AAA level and they praise our very strong competitive position. 14 Knights of Columbus assist with Manchester church renovations MANCHESTER Ongoing interior renovations at the historic 100-plus year old Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic, the oldest active wooden Catholic Church in Manchester, are nearly complete after a facelift that has lasted several months. The church on Walnut street was built in 1894 as a Baptist church and purchased in 1907 by the Ukrainian Catholic church. It was at this time the exterior structure saw changes resulting in the features visible today and the church was officially dedicated in The parish led by Father Robert Smolley currently serves approximately 45 local families, a total of about 75 parishioners. Local Knights of Columbus Council 92 assisted heavily in the renovations to help reduce the overall cost of the badly needed repairs. Local Knights efforts at the church included shortening the pews and kneelers to widen the side aisles, removal of the old flooring and carpets and the removal of old steam radiators and piping. The Knights contributed approximately 90 hours of effort that otherwise would have been contracted out at significant cost. Contractors followed the Knights efforts by repairing or replacing some electrical systems, laying new tile, and are now finishing work in the living space. The cost of the contractors was offset by a generous bequest from a parishioner. The Knights of Columbus is the world s largest Catholic fraternal service organization. It was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in the United States in 1882, and is named in honor of Christopher Columbus. In 2012, Knights contributed $167.5 million and volunteered over 70 million hours of their time to charitable causes. Council 92 meets the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary church on 54 Walnut St. The Knights of Columbus has pitched in to help renovate the oldest wooden church in Manchester.
