April2012 Temple & Family History Newsletter This month as we write our newsletter to you, we are especially mindful of the atoning sacrifice of our beloved Saviour Jesus Christ. Our thoughts turn to Him as we celebrate the resurrection at Easter time. We have enjoyed and felt moved by the video of his resurrection on lds.org/bible videos, lifted by the messages from our inspired leaders at General Conference, and feel overwhelming gratitude to Jesus Christ, Surely he has bourne our griefs, and carried our sorrows...he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed (Mosiah 14:4,5) Christ did for us what we could not do for ourselves, because of his love for each and every one of us. In the sanctity of the holy temples, we can vicariously perform saving ordinances for our family members who have gone before us, doing that which they cannot do for themselves. It is an excellent way to show our gratitude to Christ, it is an excellent way to become more Christ like. Just as our Redeemer gave His life as a vicarious sacrifice for all men, and in so doing became our Saviour, even so we, in small measure, when we engage in proxy work in the temple, become as saviours to those on the other side who have no means of advancing unless something is done in their behalf by those on earth. Gordon B Hinckley, Closing Remarks,Ensign, Nov2004. Kind regards Michael and Jacqueline Gilmore. Suggested distribution list Our list contains stake president, stake presidency counsellor, high councillor with temple & family history responsibility, stake indexing director and family history centre directors. Please can you arrange for the newsletter to be distributed to the following; Bishoprics, high priest group leadership, family history consultants, ward council members, family history enthusiasts, indexers and anyone else you deem appropriate. Additionally if it could appear on a few notice boards that would be great. Thank you
Harrogate Family History Day As we correspond with many of you it is becoming clear that relationships with local communities through family history is increasing. Below is another story, this time from the Harrogate Ward, York stake. A few years ago I was called to the high council, assigned to FH and Temple work. Not too long after I heard about the national level Yorkshire Family History Fair and asked if we were participating each year. No, we weren't. So I arranged for the booth and displays held in Birmingham and we went. Great success. Now we have been two or three years and it gets better each year. Alex Stewart, the FHC Director in Harrogate was aware of our efforts at the bigger show, and decided to do a similar effort at what we thought was a small show at the Fair Grounds in Harrogate. The event is put on by the North Yorkshire Council Archives. My understanding is that the event has been held for a few years now, and it growing each year. They were lovely hosts, and the costs for the space, tables, and electric were very low. The event was held in a lovely exhibition building at the Yorkshire Fair Grounds. As you read below, the local show was larger than we anticipated, and we were busy most of the day. We set up 3 laptops, had lots of handouts, including pencils, and had our own internet setup using a dongle. The disappointment on the day was that the server was dodgy. But my observation was that we worked through that problem such that the impact was minimal. Our great hope is that the phones at the Harrogate FHC, and others throughout the UK, will be ringing with requests to come and learn how to use Family Search and to receive free one-on-one assistance. The day was very fruitful in that we made good solid contacts and introduced many people to Family Search and the Harrogate and York FHCs. I learned some new approach techniques that I will employ at the larger national FH fair in York on June 30. We noted that the preponderance of input from those who were familiar with FamilySearch was positive and complimentary. Bro. Rice High Councillor
Harrogate Family History Day Sister Bradbury s story is so inspiring. Some of you have commented how inspired you were by the first part of the story. However they are not just stories and should be looked at more closely to see what we can learn from them. This article is therefore an attempt to look to beyond look beyond the words the words and identify and identify the ingredients the ingredients of her success. of her success. These have These been have highlighted been highlighted in the text. in the attempt text. Report from the event in Harrogate at the Pavilions (Saturday10th March). Spirit of Elijah Elder Nelson stated that it creates a natural affection between generations. Sister Bradbury said The event organised by the County Records Office had at least 37 exhibitors and several guest speakers. The Harrogate Family History Centre was represented by several consultants on a stand with several internet connected computers and a FamilySearch Display organised by our intrepid Family History Centre Director, Bro Stewart, and ably assisted by Bro Rice and Bro Walsh in many, many things during the day. The day was busy for most of the time between 10am and 4 pm; we gave out approximately 130 leaflets giving the details of the FHC (also other leaflets) and discussed, with interested visitors, the use of the FamilySearch website; online film ordering; Indexing; PAF software; using FHC's; Free online databases at FHC's (including Ancestry/ Find My Past & The Genealogist). A tiring day, well worth it. Thanks to all concerned! A croaky Dave Purser
A Call for Indexers Worldwide There is an excellent article in the March 2012 Ensign A Call for Indexers Worldwide, page It reminds us that it is through this work members and other family history researchers can easily locate ancestors information on the Internet. FamilySearch continues to gather historical records from all over the world. Sincethe introduction of indexing in 2006 about 800 million records have been transcribed. The Granite Mountain Record Vault in Salt Lake City contains some 15 billion records - and more records are constantly being added! These records hold information about BILLIONS OF PEOPLE from over 100 countries and include more than 170 languages. Indexing is designed for people in all stages of life young and old:- students, business people, mothers, students, retirees. If you don't own your own computer you can still participate, The indexing programme can run on any computer with Internet access, including at other members homes, in family history centers, at meetinghouses, or libraries where permissible. There are many examples in this article of lives being blessed through the Indexing programme. This work is vital to finding our ancestors and giving them the opportunity to progress. With the help of volunteers, more records will be preserved and the way will be opened for those who have gone before to partake of the full blessings of the gospel. One Million names indexed During the month of March indexers in the Preston temple district reached the 1 million milestone. By the end of the month that figure had increased to 1,143,809. Well done and thank you to everyone who has participated. This is more than half the total names indexed in the Europe Area. 1,000,000
To Turn the Hearts New DVD Demonstrates the Power of Family History Work Priesthood leaders have a powerful new DVD to accompany the To Turn The Hearts leaders guide. We are asked to encourage you to become familiar with both the booklets contents and the DVD and then to use them in your training of others in your stakes and wards. They are an excellent resource for priesthood leaders, demonstrating how family history and temple work is an essential tool in the work of salvation. The DVD was sent to each unit in March 2012 and features real-life experiences of people from Springfield,Illinois Stake. They are particularly inspirational because these are not scripted or rehearsed video clips, but show actual events from the lives of people with day to day challenges that we all face. These were filmed during visits made over several months, and show lives being changed, families being brought together, marriages being saved, members being reactivated and conversion to the gospel. In all of these examples family history was used as a resource to help in making an effective spiritual change in their lives, which in turn had a noticeable positive effect on their day to day lives. It has been our experience that real life stories have a powerful effect on those we teach. This DVD contains such heart warming and spiritual motivating stories. The videos of the families from Springfield are ideal for home viewing, devotionals, and fifth Sunday meetings. The training videos can assist in teaching individual family history roles of stake and ward leaders and those with family history callings. Learn practical tips and suggestions how Springfield were able to move the work of salvation forward, achieving unit and stake goals, using temple and family history work as a key resource. Individual stories and topics can be used as resources for lessons and council meetings. About 18 months prior to the filming of this video, Springfield Illinois Stake determined that one of the best things they could do to bless the lives of their members was to focus on the temple. They created that focus by emphasizing family history work. It was not chosen for this video project because it is different from any other stake, but because it is the same except for one thing: the leaders of the stake decided to make temple and family history work a priority. The results speak for themselves! Elder D.Bednar says This is not a function of simply the leaders in the Springfield Illinois Stake, who shared their lives, testimonies, and examples for this DVD. Although they are excellent and inspired... These promises, these spiritual outcomes, are available to all who seek the appropriate inspiration. These results are replicable ALL OVER the world. (emphasis added) How wonderful it would be if in future years each stake could have its own examples to share with its members. The video clips are also available online. The easiest way to access them is to go to lds.org/toturnthehearts
Contact us on or Thoughts and direction from leaders The Dundee stake was blessed to receive Elder Brimhall, Area Seventy and Managing Director of the Church s Family History Department for a fireside. Below are the pertinent points noted by Brother Johnson, High Councillor responsible for Family history and temple work in the Dundee stake. The 120 members who attended, thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. His travelling companion was Elder Rockwood, who spoke briefly at the start of the meeting using Eph 1:10 as a starting point, referring to the gathering that would encompass the world in the latter days and of the central place that the British Isles has in family history. Elder Brimhall spoke of Moroni's visit to Joseph Smith and his quote from Malachi, and then quoted from D&C 110 where Joseph had his sins forgiven him before he could be in the Lord's presence and receive the business from the Lord, giving Joseph a clear understanding of the significance and meaning of Moroni's words many years before. 'Turning the Hearts' was first mentioned in the pre-earth life - the plan that would bring us back to God. Abraham's heart was turned to his children and he received a blessing from the Lord that they would become the covenant people if they hearkened to His word. Elder Brimhall pointed out that the Spirit of Elijah is alive and amongst all people and not just members of the church, although we should understand better what it is and its divine purpose. Joseph Smith realised the importance of keeping records from the early days of doing baptisms for the dead; there are 2.4 million rolls of microfilm in the Granite Mountain, containing records from around the world but mostly from the British Isles and Europe. Family History should be used to bring non-members into the gospel; it should be used to strengthen new converts by getting them to the temple as soon as possible after their own baptism to do work for their own family. Use Family History to reactivate the less active. Get youth involved in family history, get them to go onto and use the youth family history website. There was a 200% increase in youth registering on N.F.S. after Elder Bednar's talk at the October Conference. Use and show your fan chart. Indexing is vital for the future success of family history, it is a spiritual work not just computer work. Several clips from 'Turning the Hearts' were shown during the presentation. HPGLs are crucial to the success of the work in wards and branch s. Ward Council is the meeting where this work is driven forward, but only in direct proportion to the focus it is given by the HPGL and EQP. YSA and youth consultants could also be addressed during the fireside - Barry Johnson Elder D Brimhall
