1 Official Publication of Mother Seton Council #5381, Knights of Columbus AUGUST 2014 Volume 52, Number 3 Chaplain s Corner Reverend Milton E. Jordan The challenge to bear witness to Jesus Christ. This was the heart of the Supreme Chaplain s message to State Deputies in mid-june. There is a genuine question each of us, as a Knight of Columbus, should put before ourselves: Do I seriously try to make efforts to be a witness to and for Jesus Christ? Archbishop Lori, the Supreme Chaplain and Archbishop of Baltimore, preached to the assembled State Deputies and other Knights of Columbus officers on the feast of Saint Anthony of Padua. Hopefully, you know who this Saint Anthony is: The saint we ask perhaps hundreds of times each day the busier we become to help us find missing or lost objects. Saint Anthony, look around, something is lost and can t be found! If you ever see a statue of Saint Anthony, you will always notice he is carrying the Christ Child. The Archbishop noted that Knights should ask the saint to be a help in finding Jesus in their lives. Not because we don t love or know Jesus! Rather somehow or another he slips from the center of our lives. Just as we Knights are urged to carry (and recite) the rosary each day so, too, we should adapt our prayer for what is lost to one that strengthens our relationship to Jesus and thereby strengthens our Council. Vivat Jesus! Go to: to read Father Jordan s daily blog Grand Knight Report Don Aitcheson or aitcheson@hotmail.com At our first executive meeting of the fraternal year, we put together our calendar of activities for the year. It is as usual a very ambitious schedule of activities and events. The success of the activities and the year in general hinges on the support of members and benefactors alike. Some of the highlights of the new year will be a monthly Mass at Saint Matthias sponsored wholly by Mother Seton Council; a focus on promoting more School and Council Youth activities/sponsorships, and a renewed effort to increase our visibility through Membership Drives, Tootsie Roll campaigns and Community Activities to name a few. Thank you to the attendees at the Council installation and Grand Knight Appreciation Dinner. Special recognition go to our State Dignitaries and guest, Gil Boisvert and Lady Josie, District Deputy Romeo Paternoster and Lady Sharon, State Chaplain Milt Jordan, Master of Ceremonies, Pat Springmann, my wife Rozanna and last but not least Sylvester Ikpi and John Murray who coordinated the logistics of the event. Sylvester Ikpi, Jan Kalshoven and Michael Marshall who helped setup the hall and all the brother knights and others who gave generously of their time to help serve and cleanup, thank you. All those recognized during the Grand Knight Appreciation ceremony as volunteers, Family of the Month and Knight of the Month. To our Knight of the Year award recipient, Bob Worthington, congratulations on a well deserved recognition. To our Seton award recipient, George Edet for his leadership in coordinating community programs, congratulations. Finally, I ask for your commitment to renew, refresh and reinvigorate the Council by encouraging all practicing Catholic men 18 and over to join our ranks. Remember, Mary and her Knights form an unbeatable team. May God continue to bless you and your family! Vivat Jesus 1
2 District Deputy Report Romeo Paternoster, PGK or Brother Knights, as a Council and a District, together we look forward to the reaching and surpassing the goals that were achieved in the previous administration. Mother Seton Council has the honor of having the Maryland Knights of Columbus State Chaplain as our Council Chaplain. Father Jordan has gotten the membership ball rolling with the commitment of two future Knights waiting to sign form 100s and by having a first degree in the coming month, this will insure that we will continue with the one member per council per month goal. I look forward to working with all members, new and established, in the council to help out in any way I can. My and phone numbers are available in the Seton Notes. I could not ask for a better DW then our own PGK Emmanuel Madagu to help out with the council activities. Vivat Jesus! 7 Supreme Council News Knights of Columbus Pledges $1.4 Million for Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles The Knights of Columbus formally announced a donation to cover the costs of athletes from the United States and Canada during their time in Los Angeles as they participate in next year s Special Olympics World Games. The Knights $1.4 million sponsorship will cover the costs of food, transportation and entertainment for every athlete from the two countries during their time in Los Angeles. Supreme Knight Carl Anderson made the announcement during a news conference on July 14 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Joining him at the announcement was World Games CEO and President Patrick McClenahan and Archbishop of Los Angeles José H. Gomez. The Knights of Columbus were there with Special Olympics and its founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, from the very beginning, said Supreme Knight Anderson. Sargent Shriver, Eunice s husband, was a friend and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, and like him, we are here today to continue those efforts on behalf of people with intellectual disabilities. Our support exemplifies our commitment to the dignity of every person, our dedication to assisting with our neighbors needs whatever they may be, and our deep appreciation for the great work done by Special Olympics. Anderson also announced that he is asking the leadership of the K of C in each U.S. state and Canadian province to increase the number of volunteer hours donated to Special Olympics this year. In a 1986 letter, Eunice Kennedy Shriver reflected on the Knights long involvement, observing, When a great organization like the Knights of Columbus decides to support Special Olympics, I know that God is looking after his children. Patrick McClenahan, president and CEO of Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015, noted: Anyone that is a part of the Special Olympics movement is deeply aware of the long and generous support by the 7
8 Knights of Columbus, and today s pledge is another amazing milestone. We hope their donation inspires other organizations to be a part of what will no doubt be a life-changing experience for all involved in the 2015 Special Olympic World Games. At Monday s event, the Knights were also named as a Founding Champion of the World Games. Also at that event, Archbishop José H. Gomez also announced the Archdiocese s spiritual support for the World Games. The Catholic community is happy and proud to welcome the Special Olympics to Los Angeles, Archbishop Gomez said. The Special Olympics is a celebration of human dignity and a beautiful sign that our world is truly one family drawn from peoples of every race and language. We look forward to working with the Knights of Columbus, and we pray that this competition will promote solidarity and make all of us more aware of our common humanity. In keeping with its long history of support for Special Olympics, K of C councils donated more than $3.5 million to Special Olympics in Members also provided more than 250,000 hours of service at nearly 20,000 Special Olympics events. K of C councils also donated an additional $13.5 million to a number of other projects assisting people with intellectual disabilities. Knights of Columbus Announces Accelerator Term Insurance Series Adding to its portfolio of top-quality insurance products, the Knights of Columbus announced the new Accelerator Term Insurance series available to Knights and their eligible family members, effective this July. The new series will offer term insurance protection up to age 85, a 15-year increase from previous term products. Level Term Insurance offered in the Accelerator Term Insurance Series includes a special acceleration feature that automatically increases the initial death benefit of the policy by five percent for each of the first five years of the policy.* Accelerator Term Insurance is also convertible to permanent insurance, and comes with an optional full term conversion rider, which extends many of the guaranteed conversion options of the policy. Term Insurance from the Knights of Columbus is an economical way to cover short-term needs such as income replacement, mortgage protection, debt protection, and tuition expense protection. We are always looking to update and to innovate to better serve our members and their families, said Chief Insurance Officer Thomas P. Smith, Jr. With the new Accelerator Term Insurance, we are giving our members and their families another fantastic option for protection. The release of the Accelerator Term Insurance Series comes amidst a year of records and firsts for the Knights of Columbus Insurance program. The program, founded by Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney in 1882, topped $94 billion of insurance in force early in 2014, while also earning its 39th consecutive year of the highest possible ratings for financial strength (A++, Superior) from A.M. Best. The Knights was also named a 2014 World s Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute. Earlier this year, the Knights of Columbus launched the Young Adult Insurance Program, which offers term insurance protection to Knights and their spouses from ages 18-to-29. To learn more about the Knights of Columbus Insurance program and the new Accelerator Term Insurance Series, contact your local Knights of Columbus Agent. * Face amount increases and corresponding premium increases can be declined by the policy owner by providing written notice to the Supreme Office within 60 days prior to or after each contract anniversary.
