3 STATE CHAPLAIN FATHER BILL ELSER The month of June begins almost immediately (June 2) with the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of the Lord (previously known as Corpus Christi Sunday). As I was working with our music leader to choose songs for Mass for this solemnity, I came across an interesting article that talked about fairly recent Eucharistic songs which fail to give proper attention to our belief in the real presence of Jesus in Holy Communion. In such limited space, I can't go into detail, however let me say that I applaud the use of some "oldies but goody" songs like "O Sacrament Most Holy" and "Pange Lingua" which speak of our belief as Catholics that Jesus is truly present body and blood, soul and divinity in Holy Communion. I must say that I was impressed at the Masses that were celebrated at the Knight's of Columbus State Convention in April where I saw a reverence and respect for Jesus, present in the Holy Eucharist, especially during the time of reception of Communion. I pray that all of us, at every Mass that we are privileged to participate in, will stand in reverence and awe before the Lord and let this food from heaven truly inspire and strengthen us in our journey to the eternal banquet feast in heaven. "O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament Divine, all praise and all thanksgiving, be every moment thine." VOCATIONS & RSVP CHAIRMAN PETER J. MCNULTY Worthy State Deputy, Officers, and Brother Knights all The Vocation and RSVP report for 2012 is good. I feel it could be better, if we could get more Councils and Assemblies to participate. However, after reviewing the report Supreme sent me, I must report our 2012 RSVP support was very good compared to the states that have far greater Catholic populations. Our Diocesan Vocations team of Msgr. Scott Friend, and Father Pohlmeier, assisted by Msgr. Oswald and Father Ruben Quenteras have been very successful in recruiting some very fine young men. In talking with our Bishop, his remarks were about the support and enthusiasm of all the priests in the Diocese for the strong success of a very large percentage of ordinations vs. the number of candidates for the priesthood. We have, at present, 35 seminarians and 2 discerners. Msgr. Friend has always said that his goal was to have 40 seminarians studying for our Diocese. I expect that he will make that goal this year. These men are at a number of seminaries and some are under studies at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. Those at UALR are studying language and philosophy. They are residing at our newly constructed House of Formation located near Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Little Rock. You can read more about that on the Diocesan and Knights of Columbus Web sites. There are: at St. Meinrad, IN, 14; Pontifical North American College in Rome 1; St. Joseph, LA, 1; Holy Trinity, TX, 3; Sacred Heart School of Theology, WI, 3; Catholic University of America DC, 2; Senuario Major, Mexico 1; and 2 are in their Pastoral year, and at the house of Formation, there are 7 seminarians and 2 Discerners. All of this portends a continuous addition of priests for our Diocese through 2020 and beyond. There are also 4 seminarians studying for various Orders and another Diocese being supported by several councils. Our State, through our Councils and Assemblies, has given a total of 61 RSVP awards in 2012/2013 this amounts to $30, dollars. Thus far, this year, Bishop Taylor has Ordained to a Transitional Deacon, who will be Ordained to the Priesthood in August of this year, George Sanders, who was a former priest from another faith. He will Ordain Page 3

4 3 more seminarians, 2 in May and 1 in June. They will be Ordained to the priesthood in There will be a late Ordination to Transitional Deacon, December 14, 2013, our oldest seminarian Jack Sidler, Sr., who entered the seminary on his 67 th birthday and he will also be Ordained to the Priesthood in Thank you to all the Councils and Assemblies who participate in the RSVP program. Thank you all for your continued support of our Priests and soon to be priests. God bless you all and please pray for our Seminarians daily.. Vivat Jesu Peter J. McNulty State Vocations and RSVP Chairman ARKANSAS SPECIAL OLYMPICS DUB GREEN KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS STATE CHAIRMAN - ARKANSAS SPECIAL OLYMPICS SPECIAL OLYMPICS SUMMER GAMES 2013 May saw the Games begin on a very high note. There were approximately 3,000 special athletes who participated this year, plus a great number of sponsors, chaperones, and volunteers. Everyone was extremely grateful for the beautiful weather. The Opening Ceremonies began Thursday, May 23rd at 7:30 PM. Athletes from 17 areas of Arkansas were led into the Harding University stadium by twelve 4th Degree Honor Guards, consisting of 4 from Mountain Home Assembly 2060, 5 from Hot Springs Village Assembly 2316, and 3 from Heber Springs Assembly The Honor Guard was well-regimented and did an outstanding and impressive job presenting the Colors. The Knights of Columbus Olympic Town was very successful, with nearly 1,200 athletes plus other attendees visiting our games. We had 56 volunteers, consisting of 23 Knights of Columbus, 19 spouses, and 13 others compiling a total of 1,829 hours. Our expenditures were more than anticipated. Because we had more volunteers, we had to pay a little extra for the annual Friday night meal serving Knights of Columbus volunteers, spouses, 3 members of the Arkansas State Special Olympics Board, and Bruce Kelley from the Batesville Council. Bruce is responsible for our receiving a prime and large location with the extra tents, tables and chairs needed for Olympic Town. We did receive a very good price on a delicious meal from the caterer, Golden Corral of North Little Rock. We are also grateful to other Councils who provided game prizes, beads, and Tootsie Rolls. Next year, we hope to add another tent and at least two more games to accommodate the large numbers who visit, participate and enjoy Olympic Town, fondly called "the happenin' place" by the athletes. We are growing, and it is wonderful to bring joy to these athletes. The response from our volunteers was that this is a truly special and heart-warming experience. 5 MEMBERSHIP REPORT MICHAEL (MIKE) WILLS ONE MEMBER PER COUNCIL PER MONTH One New Member per Council Officer 1 ST DEGREE CEREMONY 9 JUNE JACKSONVILLE As a collective body we need every Council to meet their membership goal. Some Councils have exceeded their goals (Congratulations), some Councils are getting close and will be successful (Keep up the good work) and then (from the report below) some Councils are struggling. This is not the time to become complacent; this is the time to work hard to achieve your goals. I believe that we can be successful as a team if every Council will recruit 2 more new members, that s right every Council. WE ARE AT 76% OF OUR GOAL AND NEED 68 MORE NEW MEMBERS!!! We can finish strong as long as we work as a TEAM. No matter what your standings are we all WIN when the Team Wins. LET s Win this recruiting GOAL. As of we have EIGHT (8) Councils at or above 100% membership goal: Council Fayetteville % Council Mena % Council Pocahontas % Council Rogers % Council Fort Smith % Council Jacksonville % Council Wynn % Council Fort Smith % There is ONE (1) Council above the glide path of 92%. Council Hot Springs... 92% Last month we had 10 Councils above their glide path and this month we have 9. This is the last month of the year and we need Councils to put every effort forth so that the STATE can finish the year in positive numbers. It should be every Councils objective to recruit new members to help with the overall Goal of the State. TO HELP WITH THIS GOAL, JACKSONVILLE COUNCIL HAS SCHEDULED A FIRST DEGREE CEREMONY, 2:00 PM SUNDAY JUNE 9TH FOR ALL COUNCILS. CONTACT GRAND KNIGHT ALEX COLEMAN, , PENGUINS4ALEX@AOL.COM, TO SCHEDULE YOUR COUNCIL. Listed below are the current standings, as of May 15 th. I know you have additional new members that haven t been added. Make your adjustment as needed. Based on a percentage glide path your membership goal should be as follows; by the end of May 92%, Jun 100%, July 8% and Aug 17%. District Deputies and Grand Knights need to review your status for Star Councils. Make certain all of your forms are turned in. Don t forget that you must have conducted four 1 st Degrees and the forms must be sent Page 5

7 Siloam Springs Altus Rogers Scranton Fort Smith Fort Smith Retention is a key to success for membership. When you drop a member you then have to recruit a new member to make your goal so it is important to have good retention committee. I know that you can t save everyone but find out there objections and try to resolve their issue. Council Officers should be leading by example and have recruited/our recruiting one new member. OWNERSHIP: When you recruit a new member it is important that you take ownership of him. Be a mentor; take him to the 2 nd and 3 rd Degree s. Get him involved in activities. Everyone can t do everything but we can do some. Involvement of members keeps the Council growing. Here are some ideas for the upcoming months that might help your recruiting: Continuous: Officers Challenge - Recruit one new member. All Officers should be actively recruiting. You have the experience and should be leading by example. June: Thirty days to finish strong. It is time to close your year out with positive numbers. Continue to ask gentlemen about becoming a Brother Knight and inform that about our 4 Corner Stones; Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Michael (Mike) Wills State Membership Director michaelwills@suddenlink.net COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES REPORT CALVIN WEBB COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR I read this in the Nightline and felt it deserved repeating here. It s a very simple formula: the more active your council is with charitable initiatives in the parish and community, the more people will see and appreciate the good works the Order performs and the easier it will be to recruit qualified Catholic men into your council. It s a circular process that benefits the new member, council, parish and community. One program mentioned in this article is Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity seeks to eliminate poverty and homelessness one family at a time. The organization assists in providing quality-built, affordable homes to needy families by cooperatively involving the future homeowner with community volunteers and suppliers who build or renovate the home. Habitat for Humanity building projects are excellent opportunities to show prospective members what the Knights of Columbus is all about. Contact your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate in your community. Visit or volunteer@habitat.org for information on your local affiliate. They will be able to brief you on the volunteer opportunities available to council members, prospects and families. Page 7

8 There are limitless opportunities to get involved with, local, national and international charities. Look for something that s needed and workable in your community and get involved. Together as a group we can accomplish more, so get your Brother Knights and your councils involved to better your community. If you have a community related activity you would like to see in this newsletter please with the information. God Bless Calvin Webb Community Activities Director calvin_webb@att.net JULY 2013 NEWSLETTER DEADLINE Please send your newsletter reports, articles, messages and photos to John Hollender, Newsletter Editor, by Saturday, June 15, 2013, for the July 2013 Newsletter.
