1 Newsletter July 2016 NOTES FROM THE CO-MODERATORS We are now in the transition from Erik s ministry to Armida s. It is very important that we continue to hold services throughout the summer to maintain continuity and to show that we can carry the torch. The Worship Committee has lined up a slate of services to carry us into August when Armida will start. It is important that we all continue to show up on Sunday and support our church! A big change for us is that The Rockford UU Church is now handling all of our communications (website, announcements, etc.). Please be aware that if your committee has an article for the newsletter or an announcement to be ed to the membership list (such as announcing a potluck or book sale) the information needs to be sent to office@uurockford.org. Newsletter articles should be sent in approximately one week before the first of the month. If you have any questions please contact your Co-Moderators. Mark Haman, haman@att.net, Ted Davenport, tkdavenport@hotmail.com, FAREWELL REV. ERIK! A fond farewell for Rev. Erik David Carlson was held on Father s Day, June 19. After nearly six years at the UU Church of Stockton, Rev. Erik is moving on to a new congregation at the Bradford Community Church UU in Kenosha, Wisconsin. After the service, Rev. Erik was presented with a gift of stained glass art created by Terry Lee. A wonderful meal followed. We wish all the best for Rev. Erik, Kimberlee, and Miles. NEWS FROM MEMBERSHIP We are pleased to welcome Parry Stevens as a new member of the UU Church of Stockton. Parry joined on May 15 and you may recognize her as one of our wonderful singers. Say "hi" to Parry during coffee hour! CARE COMMITTEE The Caring Committee continues to offer services to those who need assistance. For those who require more information about the helping services offered by the Caring Committee, please contact either Mark or Ted. Mark Haman Ted Davenport haman@att.net tkdavenport@hotmail.com
2 WORSHIP COMMITTEE Worship Committee Plans Exciting Services As we transition between ministers, the role of the Worship Committee has become even more important than it has ever been. You all need to know that we had been meeting regularly with Rev. Eric but now continue to meet on our own. We are keeping Rev. Armida in the loop and look forward to working in full partnership with her as she comes on board in the fall. The Worship Committee has been in close communication with the Music Committee so that we can provide services that will continue to incorporate music into our Sunday messages. Following is what we have planned for the month of July: Date Service Leader Topic July 3 Chris Aldridge Ancient Greek Democracy July 10 Mark Haman & Ed Risinger Inalienable Liberty July 17 Chris Aldridge The Greek Polis July 24 Alice Ericksen Mother Knows Best July 31 Mark Haman TBN So please be sure to join us every Sunday this month as we work to bring you the high quality services that we have all come to appreciate. BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS The heavy rain that occurred the first part of June in Stockton caused a little flooding in the lower level of the Church. The switch for the sump pump in the furnace room had accidentally been turned off. On the fuse box are the words sump pump and leave lever up. Thanks to John Fischer for bringing a wet vacuum in and drying out the carpet in the hallway. Please be careful when you leave that the lights stoves, faucets, and sound system are turned off and the doors are locked. I try to check the premises on Monday and find many times that something is left on or turned off completely (like the thermostats one day this winter). We have a new and faster internet service at the Church. Rev. Erik left us with detailed folders on the operation of the upstairs and downstairs televisions, DVD player, and computers. Ask Mark or Ted for the instructions if you need it for a service. A reminder that if you need to borrow the older chairs or tables or anything from the Church the contact person is Ted Davenport. ( ) Community Garden CHURCH NEWS After one false start when the weeds outpaced the growth of the planted seeds, we now have a garden in place. Thank you Laura Dufford for seeding and planting much of the garden. With luck, we will soon be able to harvest lettuce, broccoli, zucchini, green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, zinnias, and perhaps beets and winter squash. Two heads of broccoli and some leaf lettuce were cut and delivered to the Stockton Nursing Home this past week. This is of course the intended destination of all that the garden produces. Help in keeping our garden free of weeds is needed. Stop by any time you can spare and go at it (you will see our sign in the front of our garden next to the road). The last row of our garden contains broccoli and lettuce. If you are willing but don t know a weed from a bean plant, contact Randy or Laurie and we will be happy to arrange training to get you started. Happy Gardening Randy Downing
