Here it is January Your Scottish Rite had a challenging year in 2011 but I feel that we came through it better than some expected. We again hosted the Orient of Florida's Honors Weekend and were happy to welcome Ill Ronald Seale, 33, Grand Commander of the Southern Jurisdiction to the Consistory for the weekend's activities. To begin the year, congratulations are in order to those who have been elected to serve the Valley of Tampa in Of course, I am talking about our new Master of Kadosh, Brother Kenneth Warner, 32 KCCH, Commander of Kadosh, Brother Ken Scott, 32, Wise Master, Brother Louie Nelsen, 32 KCCH and Venerable Master, Brother Ron Lupien, 32 KCCH. These four brothers along with the other members of the Executive Committee will be working hard during the year to provide the leadership and new ideas that will make us successful this year. For these programs to be successful, we will need the support of as many of our members as possible. Many brothers worked hard in 2011 for the benefit of the Valley. A special thanks go out to our outgoing heads of the Bodies, Brother John Wermann, 32 KCCH, Ill Richard Agster, 33, Brother Stan Rakita, 32 KCCH and Brother Coleman Hill, 32 KCCH for everything that they did in I would also like to thank Brothers Rick Hoover, 32 KCCH and Carl Gilmore, 32 KCCH for their years of service on the Executive Committee. Brethren, your work and efforts are greatly appreciated by all the members of the Valley. All of our Committee Chairmen and their committees spent many hours this year getting ready for our Reunions, Flag Day, our monthly meetings and our efforts on behalf of the Scottish Rite Foundation of Florida. Brethren, THANK YOU for all that you have done this past year. In closing, brethren I ask again that you do what you can for your Scottish Rite in 2012, That may be attending Consistory meetings, Club meetings, volunteering your time for projects that need to be accomplished or encouraging your Blue Lodge brethren who are not members of the Scottish Rite to take that next step in Freemasonry. As always, ideas and suggestions are always welcomed and encouraged. Scottish Rite Calendar Have you checked out the Scottish Rite calendar on the website < We have listed all of the known events that will be taking place at your Scottish Rite in 2012 along with the meeting dates, times and places of our Scottish Rite Clubs. As new events are planned, the calendar will be updated to keep you informed so you may want to check back often.
3 January - February 2012 Page 3 General Secretary by Ill. John E. Drewett, 33 Donations to Operating Fund Prior to the last Executive Committee meeting, the Investment Committee had a meeting with its advisor from Smith Barney. Our advisor, along with the members from the Investment Committee, has strongly recommended that the Executive Committee come up with a way to generate funds in order to run the Consistory on a daily basis. Currently, the Consistory has to take money out of the investment portfolio in order to operate. We have done a good job at controlling operating expenses, but most of the line item expenses are fixed, such as utility bills. In addition, we just received from the Supreme Council an invoice for $52,416 for per-capita billing for 3,278 members. This is a 90% assessment based on membership records as of November 29. We will still be billed for the remaining 10%. With that in mind, I would like to respectfully request that you remember that it takes money to keep up a 38-year-old building the size of our Masonic Center. Please consider making a donation to the Operating Fund so that we may continue to operate out of this magnificent building that we are blessed to own. Calling All Volunteers The Scottish Rite is looking for volunteers to assist with several projects around the Masonic Center. We are looking to formalize a list of members' names and phone numbers, along with any special talents or interests that you may have. If you are indeed interested in being a volunteer, please call the Masonic Center to sign up. Scottish Rite Masonic Funeral/ Memorial Service The Scottish Rite does have an absolutely beautiful funeral/memorial service that is available to its members. Unfortunately, most members are totally unaware that it exists, and are only aware of the basic Masonic funeral/memorial service available from Blue Lodge. The service is available to all Scottish Rite Masons who are current with their dues. Unfortunately, we have attended way to many funerals and/or memorial services where it wasn't even mentioned that the deceased was a very active Mason. This occurs because the brother has not properly expressed his wishes for a Masonic service in writing to members of his family. Please don't let this happen to you. If you would like to have a Scottish Rite funeral or memorial service, document it in writing and give it to your loved ones. If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact the General Secretary. From The General Secretary We extend a hearty welcome and a warm hand of fellowship to a Master of the Royal Secret who has joined us by Affiliation and Reinstatement since publication of our last bulletin. Scottish Rite Freemasonry welcomes all its members and visitors within its portal - visit us as often as time permits, we guarantee good fellowship, new friends and an opportunity to work with us for the benefit of Freemasonry and Scottish Rite in particular. 6 Page 6 January - February 2012 Director of Work by Ill. C. Donald Prosser, 33 I would like to wish all my Brethren a happy New and Prosperous New Year. I would also like all of us to restart an old custom we had used for many, many years in the Valley of Tampa, but somehow just got thrown under the bus, to use a modern phrase. When you attend a meeting, or function at our "Temple" or your "Blue Lodge." When you meet another brother, especially a Brother you don't know his name-us older Brothers have this problem a lot, or recognize, or even if you do, walk up to him, say "welcome, my Brother, glad to be with you, (give him your name",) sit with him if you're having supper, or attending a degree or just a meeting. That's what Fellowship and Brotherly Love is all about. All too often I have heard many new Entered Apprentices and new Masters of the Royal Secret stand around like lost sheep, no one greets them or seems to care anything about them, and then we wonder why our membership continues to decline? Remember those words, "Relief, Truth And Brotherly Love," we are taught as part of the foundation of Freemasonry. I challenge each and every one of you my Brothers in 2012 to make it part of your New Year's Resolution. God Bless. Valley of Tampa History by Ill. C. Donald Prosser, 33 Let us return to some of those early years in each of our bodies for some interesting facts about the Valley of Tampa. Tau Lodge of Perfection No. 7 in In 1912 had Ill. Brother George P. Sullivan 33 resign as Venerable Master and Brother Wilmot Fitts, Master of Hillsborough Lodge No. 25 in 1908 & 1934, was elected as Venerable Master. On January 22, 1912 the Mobile Consistory No. 2 and Pensacola Consistory No. 3, conferred all 29 Degrees on our class of 54 new Masters of the Royal Secret, under the direction of Ill. Brother J. H. McCormick 33. This was the first time the Tampa Lodge of Perfection had ever had such a large class, and the first time all 29 degree were conferred. McLean Chapter of Rose Croix No. 1. In 1911 the Chapter authorized presenting Ill. Albert Pike's 33 book, "Morals & Dogma" to all new Brethren who had not received it in the Lodge of Perfection. On April 10, 1911, the Wise Master and Secretary communicated the Chapter Degrees to two 14 Brethren. Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday Services were conducted on April 13 and 15 respectively. 14 Brothers Jeane E. Burger and Wilmot Fitts were communicated the Chapter degrees. Postage Paid Permit #1 Manasota, FL Scottish Rite Bulletin Volume No. 35, Issue No. 1 January - February 2012 In Memoriam Sunset and evening star, and one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, when I put out to sea, but such a tide as moving seems asleep, too full for sound and foam, when that which drew from out the boundless deep turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, and after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, when I embark; for tho from out our bourne of Time and Place the flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face when I have crossed the bar. - Tennyson Carl J.
