The Holy Family Icon has arrived! I hope that each Council will soon be receiving the schedule for this year s Holy Family Icon program and that each Council will begin NOW to make plans for their scheduled week with the Icon. It is my experience that wherever the Icon Programs are planned and carried out they are well received. Let s plan now to make this the most successful year the Icon Program has seen in Vermont. Congratulations to THREE Star Councils in the Jurisdiction of Vermont for the Fraternal Year District 7 walked away with two of the three awards with Fair Haven Council 810 (GK Tim Perry) receiving one and St. Isaac Jogues Council 3664 of Vergennes (GK Bill Scott) the other. District 1 s Fr. Donald C. Kelly Council of Fairfax (GK Peter Fitzgerald) claimed the Star Council Award as well. This award is given to each Council which has turned in its Form 365 Service Program Personnel Report and its Form 1728 Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity, qualifies for each of three major awards, the McGivney Award by reaching or exceeding its membership quota, the Founders Award by reaching or exceeding its Insurance Quota and the Columbian Award by submitting Form SP7 by June 30 showing that the Council has completed the requisite number of programs in six specific fields. The Council must also have paid all lawful assessments to Supreme by June 30. If these were easy to get every Council would receive one every year. These Councils are outstanding Councils and rightly deserve this

award. Among their greatest assets in reaching this lofty height were their Field Agents David Giuliani and Brian Fiorenza. Supreme has also announced the following award winning Councils: Council 279 in Burlington, GK Bill LaCroix (Columbian Award); Council 1568 in Hardwick, GK Joe Young (Columbian Award); Council 2025 in White River Junction, GK Richard Powell (Columbian Award); Council 4684 in Richmond, GK Mat Robinson (McGivney Award); Council 5041 in Morrisville, GK David Anderson (Columbian Award); Council 6816 in Manchester, GK Frank Sutton (McGivney Award); Council 7810 in Underhill, GK Steven Haupt (Columbian Award); Council 7943 in Troy, GK Jacques Couture (Columbian Award); Council 9146 at Norwich University, GK Anthony Waddell (McGivney Award); Council in Milton, GK Roger Dickinson (Columbian Award); and Council in Randolph, GK Jim Kirkpatrick (Columbian Award). Congratulations to each of you and to your members for their outstanding work in achieving this level. I realize, as does the Supreme Council, that a severe handicap for many of your Councils is the lack of a Field Agent to serve them. Supreme is working hard to overcome this, and to get you a Field Agent of your own. Congratulations are also in order for David A. Ely of Council 279 in Burlington, Normand H. Blouin of Council 297 in St. Albans and Matthew J. Nally, Sr. of Council 421 in St. Johnsbury for recruiting one member each during the month of July. They, along with their Councils, will be entered into the monthly drawing to be held on September 21. Brothers Ely, Blouin and Nally will each receive a special edition Vermont Development Drive 365 coffee cup for their efforts and one of them and their Council will each receive a cash prize of $50. Districts 1, 2 and 3 have now been heard from. But aren t there nine Districts in Vermont? I have spent an undue part of my time over the last two months trying to gear up for a Fourth Degree Exemplification in September by organizing 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd Degrees around the state so that we ll have enough members to put on the Fourth. While a lack of interest has caused the Fourth Degree Exemplification to be postponed for now I do wish to thank my District Deputies, Grand Knights, and Degree Team leaders and members who have really made an effort to put on additional degrees to move their members along. While I am undoubtedly biased, I would like to take a moment to especially recognize State Membership Director Jim Candon, District Deputy #7 Bob Shaw and my son PJ for traveling with me from the Rutland and Fair Haven area on August 30 to Vergennes for a 9 a.m. 2 nd Degree and then to Springfield for a 3 p.m. 2 nd Degree. We made eight new 2 nd Degree Knights from five Councils with the help of some stand-ins. Thanks, guys. That s what the Knights of Columbus is all about. If your council is using the Fraternal Leader Success Planner and is SHOULD BE you will notice that the calendar page for September is pretty sparse for activities, but don t let that fool you. On the facing page you will find a list of items to plan for in October. That list includes: Orderwide Church Drive; Orderwide First Degree Week; Orderwide Charitable Service Outreach Week; Soccer Challenge and Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest. September is also a great month to start planning for Columbus Day activities like a banquet for your Council and family members to celebrate the fraternity shared by all. Wouldn t it be great to sit down together with friends and members you don t often see? Isn t that especially good when none of you has to do the cooking or wash the dishes, pots and pans? And don t forget to invite your Chaplain and other priests in your area, widow and prospective members. If there s still some room left in the banquet hall ask the Catholic Daughters and the Daughters of Isabella to join you. If you haven t done anything like this in a few years, try it. I think many of you will want to make it an annual event! But I m not quite ready to leave the Fraternal Planner alone just yet. Before you move on to September take a look, along with the rest of your Council Officers at the Council section on the page labeled Measuring for Success. District Deputies should do the same for the District section on the same page. And State Officers should review the State Council section. Be sure to congratulate yourselves and your Councils and Districts for their accomplishments. But don t let the failures go unremarked. Personally, I ve learned much more from my failures than I ever have from any accomplishment. So, July and August are gone. How have you done? I hope you had a good summer. School s in session. Let s get to work. Vivat Jesus.

Where s the State Deputy? Well, if you want to know the whereabouts of Vermont s exhausted State Deputy, here is his plan for September as of August 31. This list is subject to change, including additions. It is not exhaustive. Wednesday, September 2: Fair Haven, Assembly 2539 & Council 810 monthly meetings, incognito. Thursday, September 3: Manchester, Council 6816 monthly meeting. Sunday, September 6: Bristol, Council monthly meeting. Monday, September 7: Brattleboro, Council 917 monthly meeting. Thursday, September 10: Colchester, Council 7389 monthly meeting. Sunday, September 13: Rutland, 3 rd Degree Exemplification. Tuesday, September 15: Newport, Council 2285 monthly meeting. Saturday, September 19: Winooski, Anchor Award Dinner. Monday, September 21: Burlington, State Board Meeting. Saturday, September 26: Chittenden County Right to life dinner at St. John Vianney September Membership Recruiting Incentives from Your State Council The Vermont State Council will continue to offer the Recruitment Lottery Incentive for Councils and Recruiters during the month of September. Each New or Reactivated Member is your ticket to success. Get him into or back into the Order in August and your Council has one chance to win a $25 cash prize. What s more, his Recruiter has one chance to win a $25.00 prize as well. Want more chances to win the Recruitment Lottery Incentive? Put on a 1st Degree in your home Council or use the 1 st Degree DVD in your home Council to bring in a new member and both your Council and his recruiter get another chance to win. If you want still more chances to win the Recruitment Lottery Incentive get your New or Reactivated member to sit down with a Knights of Columbus Field Agent before November 1 st. If you do that both your Council and his recruiter will receive a third chance to win on that very same member. And if a reactivated member already has a policy with the Knights of Columbus your Council and his recruiter can claim yet another chance to win. And if he sits down with a Field Agent before November 1st go ahead and claim yet another chance each. It s THAT EASY. The drawing will be held at a K of C Council Meeting on or after November 15. Remember, Recruiters always win. Until we run out, every recruiter will receive a specially made coffee cup with the logo of our state Development Drive 365 program and will take a step on the road to the Vermont s Top Recruiter Award. The Recruiter s Cup will hold 12 oz. of your favorite coffee and is printed with the image of Vermont, the Emblem of the Order, and bears the words Vermont Development Drive 365 Ongoing Commitment to the Growth of the Order and Service to the Church. These are NOT FOR SALE. There is only one way to get one: recruit a new member or bring back a former member. Apply for yours TODAY! Remember, every Council that BRINGS IN a member gets a MEMBER! And as Supreme Knight Carl Anderson has said, We have a moral obligation to invite every eligible Catholic man to join the Knights of Columbus. Let s not wait to fulfill that obligation. There is ONE NEW REQUIREMENT. Beginning in October for September s Lottery, Councils must send a request to the State Deputy to be included in the Recruitment Lottery The S.D.

District Master Message Sir and Brother Knights, Well, its fair week and you know what that means. Labor Day will soon be upon us. I hope many of you will be participating in local parades and celebrations. We are after all the Patriotic Degree and the Visible Arm of the Knights of Columbus. Many of you have been enjoying the summer and taking reprieve from regular meetings. Now that September is here it s time to rekindle the spirit and to resume our normal meetings. I look forward to making fall visits to each of your assemblies. I will be contacting you shortly to set a date. I am very disappointed to announce that the 4 th Degree Exemplification previously scheduled for September 20 th is canceled. To be recognized by supreme an exemplification must have at least twenty candidates. There also must be at least that to pay for the expense of putting on the degree. The September degree as planned would have cost about $600. The only source for repayment of this expense as well as any travel or other expenses of the District Master comes from money received for the exemplification. In Vermont we do not receive any 4 th Degree per capita, any financial support from the State Council or from Supreme. In fact we are charged $12 by Supreme for each candidate. If we were to hold a degree any expenses beyond what s in our checkbook would be the personal responsibility of the District Master. Unfortunately I received only five completed form four applications for this degree. The next opportunity to become a 4 th Degree Knight is a very special one. On November 1 st there will be a Provincial 4 th Degree Exemplification in Worcester Ma. All the New England States making up the Bishop Healy Province will be participating. We are also hoping that our Supreme Knight Karl Anderson will be there to join us. We are seeking at least one knight from Vermont to come to Massachusetts to join the 4 th Degree. Perhaps this would be inviting for those of you from southern sections of the State. Please let me know if you are interested. We are also planning an exemplification back in Milton this spring. Stay posted for additional information as it formulates. I look forward to seeing you soon. Keep up all the good work that you do. Vivat Jesus Tom Curran, PSD, Vermont District Master of the Fourth Degree

Louis J. Trono Assembly 2106 On August 3, the Vt. Air National Guard held their annual family picnic and Sir Knights from Louis Trono Assembly 2106 of South Burlington were on hand to help serve the more than 1,000 meals to our service men and women and their families. This is the third year that Sir Knights and wives have served at this picnic. This year, Champ, from the local AA baseball team was on hand to greet kids and thank all who serve. A good time was had by all and the event was a special way for Sir Knights to say Thank You to our men and women in uniform.

Culture of Life Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) has 12 clinics in Vermont, but only 5 in New Hampshire and just 4 in Maine. Both Maine and New Hampshire have cut state funding for the abortion business while Vermont continues to generously fund PPNNE. New Hampshire also recently enacted a parental notification law, PPNNE made the decision to move their Lebanon, NH abortion clinic to White River Junction, VT, in order to avoid notifying NH parents when their minor daughter is scheduled for an abortion Contact your state representatives and senators to demand an end to Vermont state funding of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England. Mary Hahn Beerworth, Executive Director Vermont Right to Life Committee Prayer Vigil, Planned Parenthood Burlington August 22, 2015 Editor s Note: Vermont has more abortion facilities per capita than any other state, due to not having a single restriction on abortion. This event part, of a nationwide call for a Week of Prayer and Fasting to Defund Planned Parenthood (8/22-29), came about in large part as a response to the undercover videos made by the Center for Medical Progress. To view the videos released so far go to Bob & Judy Sekerak Culture of Life Couple bobjudy64@gmail.com St. Isaac Jogues Council #3664 Vergennes Vergennes Council #3664 Coats for Kids Fundraiser Saturday August 1st, Mountain View Equipment, the John Deere dealership in Middlebury, held its first "Day of Play". This free event was packed with activities for kids and families. It included an antique tractor show, balloons, face painting, bubbles, a corn box with JD toys to play with, arts and crafts, a pedal tractor obstacle course, pony rides, a tractor and wagon ride, and more. This event was held in part to support two local charities. Mountain View Equipment covered all expenses, along with a donation from Hannaford s in Middlebury. The money raise from the council food sales was given to the Knights of Columbus council 3664 Vergennes for our "Coats for Kids" program. Money from the sale of baked goods and ice cream went to Homeward Bound humane society. This fundraiser yielded $740 towards our coats for kids program which costs us about $900.

A good time was had by all, and a big THANK YOU to Mountain View Equipment for helping support our charitable work. YOUR WATCH vs YOUR COUNCIL or ASSEMBLY Some of you have heard me mention this but I feel it is such an important description that I must mention it again. Each one of us has owned a wrist or pocket watch in our life time. Some are very old with a history and some are new to hopefully make history. With your favorite Timex, Rolex, Citizen, or other brand, you took great care to keep it running. You may have taken one apart to see why or what made it work. You noticed it had a large wheel, some small wheels, some springs, and some movable arms all working together in a smooth unrestrictive motion (or maybe it wasn t working). If there was a malfunction you took it to the local jeweler for his assistance or it was placed in a drawer and never looked at again (I have 3 like this). What a shame or then again it was resurrected and past on as a heirloom.

Your Council/Assembly is the same. Look at its operation, the large wheel represents you, the Grand Knight or Faithful Navigator, and the small wheels, springs and arms represent your officers and membership. Both were formed to render aid and assistance to the sick, the disabled, and the needy members and families in our communities. All parts working in a smooth unrestrictive motion. Unfortunately, as with some of our watches, not all work in a perfect operation.your District Deputies, District Marshal, State Deputy, District Master, State Officers, and Supreme Directors are your jewelers. We want you to shine as you did on your 1 st day of operation. We are here to add that lubrication to smooth out any roughness in its workings. Just as our watches, sometimes we need the extra attention. NOW is the time to keep us shining or pull us out of that barely operating function and resurrect us back to full health to pass on your tour as a heirloom to live on forever. Just like when you pass on your watch to your child or grandchild, it means a lot to you and them, so should your Council or Assembly vision. R/George Piette DD#2/Development Dir. Monsignor Thomas Ball Memorial A Huge Success The Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Ball Memorial Open was well attended at the West Bolton Golf Club bringing 144 golfers to the links. Thirty-six foursomes graced the golf course for the day and another seven teams were on the waiting list, anxiously hoping to have the opportunity to tee it up. This growing tradition event is underwritten by the Knights of Columbus St. Stephen s Winooski Council #2284.

A spectacular day of golf thoroughly enjoyed by everyone participating under beautiful, sun-filled skies. Playing for Jesus is simply, The Best, while commemorating the life of one of our greatest priests. Who could sing the Ave Maria like the Awesome Monsignor Ball? echoed tournament director and Knights of Columbus member Greg Clairmont. The golf tournament raised $11,000 for vocation discernment to the priesthood of Jesus Christ at The Catholic Center, proudly serving the students, faculty and staff at UVM and Champlain College. The Opening Prayer by Reverend Jon Schnobrich was powerful, faith-filled and extraordinarily moving. The comradery and excitement that immediately followed as the golfing contingent headed for their respective tees created an atmosphere of abundance, electrifying energy and joy, reported Greg Clairmont. Crystal clear that the most Holy Spirit was among us ALL. Special thanks to the William and Lee Bissonette Families for their ongoing presidential sponsorship of this memorial fundraiser. Celebrating the fifth year anniversary of the signature tournament, The Knights of Columbus St. Stephen s Winooski Council #2284 has generated nearly $50,000 for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington. The 2015 Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Ball Memorial Open is scheduled for May 14, 2016 at West Bolton Golf Club. Fenway Park Memories The Saint Francis Xavier Baseball Team traveled to Fenway Park to take in the Boston Red Sox versus The Chicago White Sox night game on a beautiful, star-filled evening in Boston. As a part of the 75 th anniversary of Christ the King School celebration, the journey was thoroughly enjoyed by the children and parents from Saint Francis Xavier as well as many others. What a spectacular bus trip on Premier Coach to Fenway Park, and As Always, an awesome ballgame at one of baseball s most historic ballparks, commented Greg Clairmont, Saint Francis Xavier Baseball Coach and brother knight from the Saint Stephen s Knights of Columbus. This wonderful evening of magic and American folklore was sponsored by a generous gift from the Saint Stephen s Winooski Council #2284. The Boston Red Sox formally recognized their legendary star pitcher

Pedro Jaime Martinez and his most recent introduction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, to the overwhelming appreciative, sell-out crowd on Yawkey Way. The excitement and enthusiasm, ice cold Coca-Cola drinks and Peanut M & M s, hot dogs and crackerjacks, made the experience a lifetime memory for all, expressed a joyous Clairmont reflecting on the baseball trip. "The Knights of Columbus make dreams come true, impacting lives from sea to shining sea, commissioning holiness and goodwill to God s people everywhere, Clairmont concluded. Bennington Council 307 On August 23, 2015, Council 307 Bennington sponsored a Pancake Breakfast with proceeds being donated to "His Pantry" the food bank that is run out of Sacred Heart St. Francis De Sales parish in Bennington. There was a steady stream of folks that came out to enjoy a feast of scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon and sausage along with Coffee, juice and fellowship.
