4 4 JANUARY 31 ST, ANNUAL MEETING P A S T O R M A RG G I S R E P O RT I arrived at United Redeemer almost six months ago as I write this report. I would like to offer my deepest gratitude and thanks to you as a congregation for welcoming me into your hearts and community. I have so much enjoyed being among you in so many many ways. I am truly looking forward to the year ahead as we worship, learn, work, celebrate, and grow together. I have appreciated the dedication and love so many of you have for United Redeemer. It is obvious and contagious. I am amazed at what you have accomplished over the years and I look forward to what you will accomplish in the year ahead. I am excited about Project 3R... for the plans and dreams you have for renewing the church. I am excited about our youth program and Sunday school...you have fostered a safe, warm and loving place for the children to be. I am excited about our worship and the joy each Sunday that is felt in the pews. You have also done wonderful events and ministry outside our doors with a willingness and spirit of warm hospitality. In the coming year I see before us some challenges. 1: the number of young families that aren't involved in our community and I hope we can find ways to engage them and help them feel more connected to our community. They are needed and deeply missed. 2: continue to find ways to build a strong sense of community through small groups and interest groups.3: Worship is such a central and vital part of a church community, to discover ways and ideas to grow our worship attendance and possibly alternative worship experiences. 4. continue to build on the passion of stewardship in leadership, time, talents and resources. In our life together as a congregation, I truly trust that the power of the Holy Spirit is alive and well here and in the world. I trust the work, dance and breathe of the Holy Spirit to be among us. I anticipate with hope and excitement what will unfold for us in the year ahead. I want to Thank the council of URLC - for your leadership, time, commitment and love for this congregation. Thank you to our staff- to Jessica, who will be missed and who has done outstanding work and service in the last five years, to Teri for her expertise and thoroughness with our books and finances, to the custodians, Paul and Lori, for their time and commitment to caring for our facilities, to Ruth, Diane, Mary Ann and Kathleen for their musical gifts, time and dedication and to Cindy for all her gifts, passion, enthusiasm and talent musically-and to Cindy who has given her heart, time and energy in so many many ways to the youth of this congregation. (We have amazingly wonderful youth here at URLC- from the little ones to the teenagers ) We are all incredibly blessed to have had such a staff is in front of us. I am excited and am anticipating a great year with the help and guidance of Christ Jesus! You are God's people and I am blessed to be here with you. My prayers, blessings and joy, Your pastor Marggi

The Cinnamon roll fundraiser for Confirmation camp is always a BIG Hit! Who can resist that amazing smell each Sunday of our baking! The Confirmation Class & older Youth have held many of the same fundraisers this past year, & they are always such a great success! 8 8 JANUARY 31 ST, ANNUAL MEETING C O M M I T T E E R E P O RT S A D U LT E D U C AT I O N An important educational tool for the adults of United Redeemer is PACE. A variety of speakers are invited to PACE to share experiences and information that we hope promote conversation and enrich our lives. Some Sunday school and youth members also attend these presentations when appropriate. PACE is a self-supporting budget item. For more than 45 years, PACE (Parish Adult Christian Education) has been an important education component for members and guests of the congregation. PACE continues to take place between worship services September to May each year. Sessions begin with coffee, cookies and fellowship. Each year, a wide range of speakers and topics have been included in the PACE time from 9:15 to 10:10, as experiences and information are shared promoting conversation and enriching our lives. Many topics are applicable for Sunday school and youth members as well as adults. Some Sundays are devoted to youth activities including presentations by youth and adults sharing their summer experiences at the annual ELCA youth conventions, mission trips and Boundary Waters experiences. Events such as Sundae Sunday and the annual cookie auction take place during the time. The PACE forum allows our congregational members and others to learn about other programs and activities occurring in our community and surrounding areas. We continued our annual practice of sending holiday cards to our 2015 high school graduates & military personnel and preparing gift bags to the homebound - all greatly appreciated by the recipients. Some of the topics presented during 2015 included: preventative medical recommendations; Zumbrota Area Food Shelf; protection against identity theft; child abuse; organ and tissue donation; and an overview of the Muslim religion by the President of the Islamic Center of Minnesota. In 2015, a new name for PACE was discussed as well as increasing the number of sessions dedicated to fellowship. With the retirement of 2 members of the committee, the adult education committee welcomes those interested in joining the committee and/or suggestions for future topics. PACE is funded solely by contributions from the congregation at PACE on Sundays. Submitted by, Marylyn Anderson [PACE Coordinator] E VA N G E L I S M This committee coordinates outreach efforts to new, inactive, and potential members of the congregation. The evangelism team is responsible for the Reception of New Members during the PACE hour. They also provided each new member family with a sponsor from the congregation. New ideas are needed and more energy is welcome. M I S S I O N S U P P O RT This committee supports various missions of our congregation. First of all, we encourage each member to review their relationship to God and renew their efforts to give thanks through their monetary gifts, their time, and their God-given talents. It is through those gifts that we are able to function as a faith community carrying out God s will. Our largest commitment is to the General Budget. Secondly, we are thankful for the designated gifts. These involve our property, our sanctuary renovation, our youth, and many other projects, including the support of the Larger Church. The Mission Support committee supports the various missions of our congregation. The committee is responsible for encouraging each member of URLC to review their relationship to God. Asking each member to renew their efforts to give thanks through their monetary gifts, their time, and their God-given talents. It is through these gifts that The Church is able to function as a faith community carrying out God s will. Our financial commitments include the General Budget, Renovation to the church property, education of our members, outreach to the local community, and mission support. Submitted by, Mary Goplen [Council Representative] P RO P E R T Y M A N AG E M E N T This committee meets on a monthly basis. We oversee the repair and maintenance of the building and grounds, along with hiring of lawn care and snow removal. The Property and Management committee is responsible for the maintenance and repairs of the church buildings and property and overseeing that these activities are completed. This committee is involved in acquiring bids, reviewing and accepting bids for maintenance related projects and ongoing processes such as lawn care and snow removal. It also is responsible for ensuring the readiness for all annual and semi-annual inspections and that any inspection issues are remedied, as well as (Continued on page 9)

9 JANUARY 31 ST, ANNUAL MEETING 9 C O M M I T T E E R E P O RT S ( C O N T I N U E D ) completing the necessary safety checks. All inspections were passed and safety checks on AED, exit signs, fire extinguishers and the elevator were done. This year, it was suggested that the property and management committee put together short and long range plans for maintenance projects that need to be done and can be done with memorials or donations. From this suggestion, Project 3R was developed. We have $150,000 worth of projects to be completed as funding becomes available. So far, this year, new ovens and a stainless steel wall were added to the kitchen, offices were painted, roofing work and tuck pointing on the church and fellowship hall were done. Also, upgrading to the fellowship hall men's restroom was started and will be completed as funding allows new flooring and other work to be completed. The Property and Management committee meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7pm. Submitted by, Chuck Rohe [Council Representative] S O C I A L M I N I S T RY This team has been in existence at URLC for over 3 years now, and includes an energetic knitting ministry, garden ministry, bereavement ministry, visitation ministry, food shelf support ministry & support for Hope Coalition s Women s Shelter in Red Wing. Our goal is to expand caring ministries not only within the congregation, but more importantly, in the broader community. Short-term, emergency ministry in individual cases is also under the wing of this committee. New team members are always welcome. This team of volunteers supports URLC through visitation, bereavement ministry, and knitting, vegetable gardening for food shelf support, international mission projects and providing meals for homebound people. We provide food and monetary donations to the Zumbrota Food Shelf year round. Additional food shelf items in low supply are gathered during the summer. An outreach program of providing meals is greatly appreciated. Meals were prepared and served by URLC members on the second Sunday of the months of Jan-Mar/ Oct-Dec The knitting ministry provides prayer shawls or lap robes to offer comfort and warmth to people experiencing illness or loss. Our bereavement ministry supports families or individuals who have experienced the loss of a loved one. We have a "Kid s Coat Closet" with hats, mittens and coats, new or gently used, to help the children in need of these items in our area. Our garden provides many fresh organic vegetables to the food shelf and seniors in the community. New team members are always welcome, so if you are interested, please contact the church office or myself. Submitted by, Rene Arendt [Council Representative] S TA F F S U P P O R T The staff support committee meets periodically throughout the year. Discussions are held to continue to review and refine job descriptions and make sure that these are given to each staff member annually along with an updated compensation and benefit package. Members of the Staff Support Committee continue to meet with staff in order to review job performance & revise job descriptions as needed. We continued to utilized the new job evaluation, introduced last year, that included a self-evaluation & rating format. This includes an annual update of personnel folders, for staff and lay-staff, to ensure they contain all the required documentation. The staff support committee has initiated the search process for an office manager after council regretfully received the resignation of Jessica Ottem, our church office manager. She plans to continue in her position through the end of January 2016 to finish year end projects, prepare the annual report, and assist in orienting a successor. Please join us in thanking her for her 5 years of service to our congregation and support her during this time of transition. As we also thank everyone from office personnel, and custodial staff, to the talented music directors and accompanists for their continued contribution to the life of United Redeemer Lutheran Church. 10 10 JANUARY 31 ST, ANNUAL MEETING C O M M I T T E E R E P O RT S ( C O N T I N U E D ) T RU S T F U N D The Trust Fund of United Redeemer is composed of gifts from individuals and estates. Some gifts were made with requests by the donors that dollars earned from the principle sum be restricted in their use. Other donors have made gifts where earnings from the principle are to be used at the discretion of the Trust Fund Board. The Trust Fund meets as needed. Applications for financial support are reviewed and acted upon. The Trust Fund Committee met a few times in The Trust Fund Committee By-Laws were reviewed. The committee reviewed the requests for funding and allocated funds according to the guidelines. The Trust Fund policy currently in place states that no more than 5% of the trust fund balance on November 30th can be used in the next calendar year. $26, is available for disbursement in Submitted by, Sharrie Huston [Chairperson, Trust Fund Committee] W O R S H I P The Worship Committee is responsible for planning and coordinating a program of worship meaningful to the worship life of the congregation. The Worship Committee met approximately quarterly to plan the worship and music schedules for the year. Worship leaders and the congregation learned several settings of new liturgy from the new hymnal. The Bells, Adult Choir and With One Voice groups, and the Organists continue to bring music to the worship experience. Music continued to play a significant and meaningful role in the life of the United Redeemer congregation. Each Sunday worship services have been enhanced by talents of the members of the Sanctuary Choir, Jubilee Bells, United Redeemer Singing Sisters and With One Voice. In addition, we continued to be blessed with outstanding contributions from individuals sharing their talent, from Sunday School groups and from others who, in some way, shared their talent for the benefit of the United Redeemer family. Throughout the year a number of changes have taken place while sharing in worship weekly. Here are a few of those changes: The Lent services focused on the extraordinary lives and witness of people of faith who are perhaps less well-known than the great Saints of the Church. For the five Wednesdays of Lent Pastor Dick Jorgensen provided a series of lessons on Prophets, Saints, & Martyrs You May Or May Not Have Heard Of. In March and April Tricia Stiller provided a number of connected Children s Messages titled, Building Blocks of the Liturgy: Gathering, Word, Meal, Sending and included many ways to teach about the order of worship services. And the bulletins were formatted to correspond to those four blocks of Liturgy. Then again in the fall the worship bulletins changes again. They are now a larger format, making room for a more userfriendly way to follow along with the service, eliminating the need to reference the Hymnal so often. In September the second service started to involve more youth & Sunday school families as volunteers and Cindy chose more contemporary music, which included Sunday school students playing instruments up front and Cindy on the keyboard/piano as opposed to the organ. Communion will be by intinction for the majority of our services, and the Bread & Wine will be reserved for a few services each year. 11 JANUARY 31 ST, ANNUAL MEETING 11 C O M M I T T E E R E P O RT S ( C O N T I N U E D ) Y O U T H E D U C AT I O N The Youth Education Team meets monthly. The Committee sets up Vacation Bible School (VBS, for 3-5 year-olds) and Day-camp (for kindergarten - 6 th grade). The team also makes decisions about Sunday school curriculum, fundraisers, service projects, and Sunday school class involvement during services. The total number of children that actively attend URLC Youth Education programs, which is nursery through 7 th grade, is 113. We continue to use the SPARK curriculum for Sunday school. Sunday school attendance is up from last spring, averaging kids each Sunday. Sunday school is made possible by Teachers, Shepherds, Confirmation Student Teachers, and Volunteers. Vacation Bible school was held August 3 rd -6 th and was at night with dinner served before bible school each night. Vacation Bible School was held at no cost to the students and open to the public. Vacation bible school was well attended and Cindy received positive feedback about the night time. Vacation Bible School was staffed by the youth education director and volunteers. Seventeen youth and 3 chaperones attended the National Youth Conference in Detroit July, The youth went trick or treating over Halloween for UNISEF and raised $ The youth s December 2015 noisy offering collected $200 for Sunday school funds. The second service has now become a more contemporary service, with the youth serving as readers, ushers, and joining in on hymns with instruments. Money was sent this fall for children s school supplies. Winter caps, gloves, snow pants and jackets were sent January and February, then again October through December. Money was raised by the congregation in November and forwarded to provide a gift and a Christmas party for 50 children at the shelter and in Safe Homes. Winter caps, gloves, snow pants and jackets were also collected by our committee to help the Social Ministry Team s Clothes Closet at the church. This clothing is distributed to any child, teen, or parent in need at ZM Schools, Headstart, W.I.C. (Women, Infants, Children program) and our community at large.
